Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talk Zed be Let's.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Talk about a cricket and now with Amelia Kerr Rockstar
all Rounder show. Saying that that she is, he joins
us now to preview the match tonight. It gets under
way at ten thirty.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Darcy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I'm great, Melely, thanks for asking. Hey, World Cup it's
right on the doorstep. Are you tempering your enthusiasm for
this tournament?
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Well?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yeah, no, it's exciting. We don't get to play too
much fifty over cricket with the World Cup coming around
every four years, so it seems that we play a
lot more tea twenty cricket these days and for us
fifty over is the pinnacle. So yeah, it's pretty exciting
to be able to play everyone once and to play
cricket in India and Sri Lanka.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Love the structure of the tournament. You play everybody once,
then you've got semis, then a final, then a winner.
It seems very egalitarian.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Millie. Yeah, it's a lot of games with cricket and
I think you know, getting to play everyone once, it's
obviously it doesn't matter what pull you're in because there's
no such thing. And yeah, it's a long tournament too,
so I think the team that wins it, they've had
to be consistently great throughout it.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Not a lot of fifty over cricket. So what's the
movement like physically and mentally to get back into fifty
over mode.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I think one, it's probably a little bit in a way.
It's physically harder, it's just more time on your feet,
But I think the main thing is kind of the
mental approach, And with fifty over cricket, it's being patient
and doing things for longer periods and doing their really
basic small things well consistently over and over again. T
(01:53):
twenty cricket there's a bit more flair and fireworks, I guess,
but fifty over cricket, it's trying to just take each
ball as it comes and trying to separate each ball
as its own battle, and you've just got to be
really mentally focused.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
You be loving a balance of the side, wouldn't you.
Look you've got some super experienced players, you've got some
mid experience players, and you've got some of the youth
coming through as well. That makes you smile, right.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, I think the balance of the side is great,
and now those young girls came in a few years
back have had a lot more experience and have had
tasted that success as well, which helps build belief. So
I think we've got a really nice balance. We've got
a great environment off the field, and the pleasing thing
(02:38):
as of late is just seeing how many more players
are stepping up and contributing to team performances.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Now the warm up game has been for you.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
Yeah, we've had four warm up games, two against England
and Dubai and then two over here, and they've been
really good competitive games. We've got, I guess, in a
way what we've wanted out of it. With players getting
time in the middle, I think has been really important.
We've everyone's got to play as well, which has been nice.
(03:08):
All fifteen are playing and yeah, it's actually been pretty
full on, but nice to get some some time playing
fifty over cricket before the tournament starts.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Expectations around to indoor, What are you expecting. What's the
ground like, what's the pitch like?
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, we trained there last night and it's a really
cool ground. I think it's depends where the boundaries go,
but it looks like a small ground, and I've heard
that it's a really good wicket, so I think it's
meant to be a high scoring ground. Again, if you
bowl good balls on any wicket, it's still hard to
score off. But yeah, I think under lights as well,
(03:44):
the ball might skid on. And yeah, the wickets meant
to be very good here, so it could be a
high scoring game.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Small boundaries, a good deck. Sophie Divine must be grinning
for me and to ear right now.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, if she can, she can get. If she can
bet through to the last ten overs and we've got
wickets in hair, and I think she'd be pretty dangerous.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Meanly technically of the coaching staff been saying about your requirements,
your attitude, what you need to do throughout the duration.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
I think betting is very individual and so each player
has to have their own game plan and everyone has
different roles, whether your top order or middle order. Some
people sweeping's low rists, some people that's high ris for so,
I think the main thing is for each player to
understand their own role and the clarity of that as
(04:34):
cliche is as it is is. Wickets in hands allow
you to have a death phase and really put pressure
on at the back end, but still being positive throughout
the whole innings and when you're chasing, we'll probably put
some targets up at where we want to be depending
on what we're chasing. But I think the key for
batting is definitely known your own game plan.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
You haven't had the greatest success against Australia, that's been
polite in the fifty over game, but is it worth
looking back over those fixtures like the last few times
you played.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I think the thing with World Cups is everything's a
one off game, and for a team like Australia, who
often expected to win in a series, sometimes it's there's
less pressure. But in a World Cut, when the expectations
on you to make the final like Australia are, they've
(05:28):
got to play under a lot more pressure. And for
us it's kind of a game where we know, if
we play our best, we can really put them under
pressure and almost take it as a free hit against them.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Extra power or extra pressure. Considering that you are the
reigning T twenty I world champions.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
I think the best thing about that is the belief
factor having won a World Cut knowing that we can
win World Cups. So I think it doesn't add any pressure.
It's obviously a different format, but I think what it
does is build belief.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Have you got cross here is locked on any particular
Australian player.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, they're obviously got a lot world class players on
their side with bat and ball, and I think for them,
Beth Mooney and Elise Period kind of the glues and
their betting lineup, so I think they're quite important for
betters to play around them. And yeah, I think they're
opening attack with Meghan Shoot and Kim Garth. I've been
(06:26):
pretty pretty consistent over a long period of time.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Together and not even twenty five yet. Me it is close.
It's kind of hard calling you a mature or a
senior player. At let's face it, you are what do
you have to contribute all with the bat and the
ball on the field, but mentally what do you have
to bring to the party.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
I think for me it's just about being consistent and
behaviors and turning up each day the same, wanting to
get better, wanting to work hard and having good energy,
and then to encourage others around the group and help
then build belief in their own abilities as well. I
(07:03):
think it's really important and with Paul White as well.
I work closely with him in the spin group, and
that's probably something I just want to help out with
a little bit. With our group, we're quite a close
spin group and it could be really important. Over here.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
There's a form of the ball going. You're not supposed
to get a handle on tweaking to what late tweetis
early thirties, but you've got quite the armory. Are you
working on anything new you're going to release?
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, I think when you're in a performance phase and
like getting into a World cut now, it's all about
preparing for the games rather than trying out new things.
So it's kind of backing what I do best. And
you've done all the work in the winter and you
top up on tour with trainings. But the key is
(07:53):
just competing to the best of your ability and getting
in the fight as soon as you're on the field.
