Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from news Talk zed Be the.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Return of the rey guard is something they really want.
I also wonder, with thirteen players in the way back
a few other regular starters shouldn't actually go back and
play some rugby as well. I mean, what else are
you gonna do? Go and learn to play already. We
will get your thoughts on that later on in the piece,
but I'm pretty firm on that'll find out what came
(00:34):
makes of that because he joins us now to give
us some of his thoughts and hopefully tell us about
that injury and how it's been going.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Hey can how's it? God?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Very well?
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Was the point?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
What about you? You're going to be playing some rugby
again in the weekend?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Shock?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Horror?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
I know, who would have thought, how good?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well, we wouldn't have thought so the progression since the injury.
Just talk us through what you've experienced and how satisfied
or comfortable you are with that foot.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah. So it's obviously it's been a bit of a
niggli one just because it's bone related. I had to
have had a lot of patience, I guess to offload
it completely especially at the early stages, which probably struggled
with on probably someone that likes to ripping with rehab
and whatnot. But I guess the whole reheab was pretty
much just staying off as much as I can, So
that took a little bit of adjusting getting used to.
(01:24):
But yeah, just sort of it was just based off symptoms.
So once sort of I was able to walk comfortably,
then progress to you jogging on treadmill and stuff like that,
and just keep progressing, you know, based on symptoms and
as long as they weren't any and it wasn't getting
worse and were able to keep progressing. So yeah, really
happy with outfields now. Had a really good weekend with
(01:44):
the All Blacks last week, so they could get a
visual on sort of what I was doing and how
much I could do and whatnot. And they're pretty happy
that I'm ready to play some rugby gains.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
So you're ready to rip in for counties.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
On satata, you're so you're running, you're kicking, your passing,
your side stepping, you're doing everything at a hundred. There's
no stress or whatsowheth. You've got complete confidence in your foot.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Yeah, we had some good tests last week. Got put
through it, you know, like I was, I was pretty
the life anything. It's probably the lungs that were catching
back up because I'm not used to I guess that
sort of type of condition and whatnot. So it was yeah,
it was good. Yeah, and the foot responded really well
to all that stuff. So yeah, there's nothing worried about.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
What about headspace, That's one thing is it's not physically injured,
but being out and watching the All Blacks not being
involved and seeing a number of different halfback circle through
that number nine Jersey, how's your head space going through
all that?
Speaker 4 (02:37):
Yeah, I guess it is. You know, the timing probably
couldn't have been any worse, given that, you know, we
saw no I go down before I was actually had
like you know, was diagnosed with an injury in that
French game, and then yeah, being at home watching the
Boys and RG when Cortez injured himself as well.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
It was pretty tough.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
You know. It's hard not to feel like you sort
of let the team down with something that you know,
if you had time again, might have been able to
manage it for it to not to eventuate to an injury.
But yeah, it was Yeah, just because of the time,
it's pretty frustrating, and you know, with I guess the
other nine stepping up, it was sort of the next
man up mentality, and yeah, I was actually although it
was frustrated not being out there, I was pretty stoked
for you know, the.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Like Sir Finlay and KP who had to step up.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
You know, at that Eden Park tests it was massive tests,
you know, KP on debut and Finlay you know, is
called back in you know, through injury, and he probably
I don't know what he was, you know, he might
have been thinking that he probably isn't going to get many.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Opportunities back in the Black Jersey. But he stepped up
when the team needed him too.
Speaker 4 (03:33):
So yeah, it was pretty cool for them to, I
guess throughout the rewards when they needed to.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
It was special from Finlay Christie because he'd basically been
pushed to one side the new generation are coming through.
He had to come back and put his best foot
forward and he did it and he played superb rugby.
So that attitude, I'm presuming it's an all black attitude
that he carried into the camp. I think it's inspirational
for a lot of players out there, it's never too
(03:57):
late and you still can contribute whether the coach passed
through over originally or not.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Yeah, that's right, And I think it sounds probably cliche,
but I think that's right there where we saw the
experience that he's got. You know, he's played twenty twenty
odd tests, you know for the All Blacks, and you know,
played the World Cup, so he's used to the pressure
situations and you know, he was probably the perfect man
to be able to step up because of that experience
that he's already got.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
So I think, you know, within camp there was there
was no doubt.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
That he's going to be able to perform when you're necessary.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
So yeah, really pleased from you.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Got any tips about how to deal with the frustration
of injury and sitting and waiting and not putting any
pressure on your leg and having to twitter your thumbs?
How do you go about working through that?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Oh? Good question.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
I guess trying to find things, I guess outsider rugby
that can sort of keep you saying, like, you know,
it's opportunity to connect with some friends that I probably
don't see during the rugby season because where we see
quite busy and always a way so was able to
do that. When I have my downtime, which was refreshing,
and you know that it's quite I guess it's good
because they're not talking to me like I'm can more.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
We go there a good player.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
You know, I'm a person too, and yeah, it was
cool to I guess connect with them and just you know,
have a laugh and catch up, which was cool. But yeah,
I still can't say it was easy though. It's pretty frustrating.
Probably I'd say it was more frustrating with my knee injury,
to be honest. At least with my knee, I was
able to rehead the house down. I could bloody heaps
of stuff I could do If it wasn't for my knee,
it was for you know, the rest of my body
that I was able to do it. This was just
(05:28):
pretty much gym and staying off it and what boy,
I can swimming every day, so it's.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Probably a little bit different.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
But yeah, just I guess once I did start making progress,
it's always I guess, well, you can see that you
are going to get better and get back on tracks.
So once I sort of started rating again, I was
I was all good because I knew that I was
back in progress.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
What was the actual medical diagnosis, What technically happened to
your foot?
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Yes, I got bone stress in the third metatarssle, so
it's like in the mid foot, so it's like information
inside the bone, so it's not like a surface inflammation
with you know, ice doesn't quite fix it, and because
it's in your bone, it takes a lot longer for
it for the information to settle down. So I guess
(06:15):
there's a combination of things of how it sort of
came about. Whether it was a change in I guess
increased load an intensity surface was quite probably a big.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
One as well.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
And yeah, I guess because of you know, adrenaline and
seeing other things, you probably don't feel it creeping up.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Like I never had.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
Any symptoms when I was in with the All Blacks
in that French series, and it was in the week
off when I was doing some sessions on my own
where I sort of felt it, but it wasn't too
worried about it because it wasn't that significant. But then
just yeah, one day post one running session, it's sort
of got a bit more sorel where I was a
little bit concerned about it, and then yeah, it was
(06:54):
all over over and such.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, Cameron guard Dad joined just returning All Black half back,
although not with the All Blacks with the County's monico.
This weekend looks like you're going to be playing an
Auckland team. That team hasn't come out yet, but I'm
presuming because Caleb Clark and Arica you have both been
released as well, you'll be facing them on the pack
and what should be a rip snorter because like Candies
are struggling, Auckland have been struggling. There's a lot on
(07:19):
for you guys.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Yeah, yeah, there's obviously a lot to play for.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
I think there's only three or four rounds left, so
these are all pretty much do with die games. So
I guess both teams have had a similar campaign, a
bit of a tough start, couldn't really find our feet,
but you know the past or had quite a bit
of success in recent weeks, So yeah, I'm guessing. You know,
I'm sure both teams will be looking to put out
(07:44):
a performance out there proud of and get a win
to sort of get the season or keep this season
on track. But yeah, I think we haven't. We haven't
played them in quite a few years. But I think
we haven't beaten them and it might be seven or
eight years, so it'll be good to get one over
the neighbors up the road.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
What are you doing on the bench?
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Mate?
Speaker 2 (08:03):
You must have come on, let me start. This is ridiculous.
So it's just it's been extending the torture, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Oh, I mean he's been Cohen's been there all year
and he's been great. He's sort of similar to the
All Blacks.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
I guess there's been so many injuries of the squad
and you know with JT that he's had a significant
calf injury as well, so he's out for you know,
some some time. And yeah, he's been able to step up.
What's been really good. So yeah, I'm not bother being
on the bench. It's it's probably quite good to a
nice challenge to be able to close out the game
if it is tight. Haven'd experienced there to hopefully do
what I can to you know, do what's necessary to
(08:36):
I guess hit the win.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, and so you are lined up to play in
the Bluesow Cup match. You talk about pressure for the
South Africa one. I think he just got ramped up.
Is that what you've been told by All Black management.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Not necessarily.
Speaker 4 (08:47):
I think first jobs first is to get through this
weekend all good, and then I guess from there it
will be a conversation whether you know, they think I'm
available and ready to go. But yeah, I'm just really
excited to get back into some rug bets. It's probably
a bit little bit deceiving and how long I've actually
been out. It sort of doesn't feel like I've missed
too much. But you know, with those week off for
the All Blacks, you know, I've missed four games of that,
(09:08):
but that's still you know, six seven weeks. So it'll
be good to just get into some hopefully some flowing
rugby and some high ball and play to test out
the lungs and make some tackles and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Yeah, just really excited.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
They're really interested that thirteen All Blacks are coming back
to playing the NPC this weekend. I have thought that
maybe you all should be back playing after what happened
over last weekend. What was the attitude like amongst the
players and the All Blacks around turning to the NPC
or around taking rest when you can. I believe that
(09:41):
a number of players actually want to just keep playing,
but some players really enjoy the fact they need a
rest to recalibrate. Was the general sense of that feeling
amongst the squad do you think.
Speaker 3 (09:50):
Cam, Yeah, I guess it is different for everyone.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
You know, there's a lot of quite a contrast between
someone that's starting and playing high minutes compared to someone
that's well either not playing it all or off the bench.
So it's always a conversation that the medical staff will
have with each layers. So and if they think that
they want them to get some rugby to you know,
keep the top up of I guess form or whatever
(10:15):
it might look like it is necessary, then they'll do that.
But you know, obviously international Test match foot is you know,
it's a different level and the demand and the body
is it's really high. So you know, for particular players
that are playing big minutes, I think they enjoy the
or you know, they make the most of the week
off because you know, your body gets better, and I
think that's that that's the challenge that you know, you're
(10:36):
facing the Rugby Championship, not just that, but the mental
challenge of you know, you play the same team twice,
so being able to back up performances that's obviously.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
Something that we've struggled with.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
And yeah, if it means that, you know, boys have
to have a week off to freshen up, then you
know they'll do that.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
And finally, and thanks so much Camera Reguard for joining us.
You want to hazard a guess at what actually happened
against South Africa last weekend, because I'll tell you what,
most of us looking at their last forty minutes going what.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yeah, I guess the mindset of that South African's they
were hurting a lot from Eden Park tests and we
knew that. You know, I thought we started reasonably well,
obviously not as well as that Eden Park, but we're
able to hold them off initially defensively, and then we're
able to score a really nice try. Leroy were through,
you know, sort of playing the brand of rugby that
we want to play, being able to move the ball,
finding space and sort of exploiting the way they defend
(11:25):
a little bit. But I guess in that second half
probably just lost a few key moments. You know, they
kept really well, put us under a lot of pressure
in the year, and then sort of from there it's
it's hearts sort of turned to an uppool better. Was
they you know, a lot of the ball, a lot
of the momentum was in their favor, and yet when
you're on defense the whole time, it's quite a lot
(11:45):
so taxing, you know, like it's really hard to sort
of stay in the game. And yeah, I think we
sort of just fell to slip away there a little bit,
And yeah, I feel for the boys. It was you know,
everyone cares so much about this team and you know,
representing our country.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
It's a mess of honor.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
And yeah, I'm sure moving forward, will be doing everything
we can to put a performance out work that we're
proud of next week, and on top of that, being
able to stack performances because I guess at the moment
that's something that we're struggling with. You know, we win
one and then we lose one, so that could be
the difference in the regular championship. It's obviously very close
at the moment, one point from first to fourth. So yeah,
(12:17):
hopefully we can get Australia one right and then be
able to improve on that performance.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
No need for the DMO. We've got the For more
