Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
It was announced today that Wrexham AFC are on their
way Cinderella story of British football of the last five years,
are going to be playing the Phoenix at Skinna Stadium
on the nineteenth of July. To talk about that, we're
joined by the general manager of Phoenix's name is David Dome.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
David, Welcome evening, Darthy.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
What a great day for yourselves. It's official Wrexham are
a coming. That's cause for celebration and what, let's face it, David,
it's been a pretty average year for the club.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Yeah, it's great for the club, it's great for the fans,
it's great for the city and it's great for the
country to have a club. So you know, it's not
a Premier League club by by standing, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
But.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
It's a Premier League club by brand and and you know,
to have an international superstars like these guys come out
and you know, bring their TV cameras in the Disney
Plus streaming platform. I just hope, you know, I hope
that the crowds turn out and they set out sky
Statium and it's going to look great on the on
the Disney Plus show and makes the city look great.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Are you going to hand out Phoenix jerseys for everyone
who turns up?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Well, we certainly want to have a prison.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
I mean you got to I keep forgetting Well, we're
actually it's Wrexham versus the Phoenix, so Phoenix fans should
turn up in Phoenix gear.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Now, I know they might want to turn up and
wrex the.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Gain and I'm sure there's lots of people wearing Rick
and shirts that would be quite nice, but we still
want our fans to turn up and support us and
they make it a real event. I mean, that's the thing, right,
this is an event. It's not a sports game. It's
going to be a bit of an event. So that's it.
That's the exciting thing.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Did this fall into your lap, David or did you
go out chasing it?

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Well, it's actually through TG ticket Tech. So we've of
nine Gef Jones, who is the CEO of ticket Tech
in Australia for quite some time and we've always talked
about bringing out an English Premier League team.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Now, Ricka, I.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Guess you say they're not EPL yet, but they're on
their way. But this was the next best thing. And
while it's taken a couple of years to get here,
we finally got there and you know, it couldn't be
more thrilled that. I mean, not only do they bring
that brand, but they bring, like I say, all the
TV cameras and it's going to be exciting to have,
you know, these sort of buzz around the city in July.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
What are the chances that someone in the New Zealand
media will ask one of the movie stars what do
you think of New Zealand?

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:24):
I would give it very short of at the TB
probably a dollar one.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
So in order for the media ask stupid questions of
the owners, are they actually coming down to this the
movie stars Rob and Ryan.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
After the question about tickets and hospitality, that's the second
question everyone is asking, is Rob and Ryan coming down?
And can we get to see Deadpool in real in
real life?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
We actually don't know. I guess I would say.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
We won't know right up until the last minute, depending
on what their schedules are.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Like.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
What we do know is that the entire production crew
of Rio ExHAM is coming down and that, you know,
all things being equal, hopefully that there'll be some a
lot of New Zealand and the next one of the
next upcoming episodes, and you know, hopey fans can be
part of that. But yeah, as for the owners, I mean,
will certainly try and put the requests out and get
the invites out and try and control them to come.

(03:11):
But you know, it's one of those things that's that
that definitely is out of our hands. But it would
be how great would it be to have those guys here.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Tiger or Jason Mamore A listen, they could put a
good word in New Zealand's a great place. All these
celebrities that look, Brad Pitt's here at the moment right, Well,
they're all mates.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
You know, Tiger is close with Ryan Reynolds. We know that.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
And you know there are people in the Wellington region
that are quite good at making films and.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Know how to do that. And I think there might
be a.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
Few connections between a few people in Wellington and Marvel
Phone Marvel Studios as well. So look, I think if
the city is going to be using all its powers
to try and get them to.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Come, so why New Zealand, why are they coming specifically
to the Phoenix.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Well, I think they I mean they're obviously doing their
off season tour and they're you know, they they have
taken it on the road before, and this is a
part of the world that is you know, good football
countries play a good stand of football, will put on
a good test for them. They know that it's culturally easy,
English speaking, very safe, they know the contracts are what

(04:16):
they're written on, and they know they've got fans down here.
And look, I I don't get obviously get the numbers
for Disney Plass, but I would assume that their TV
show does.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Very well in this part of the world.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Two good clubs in Australia and a good club in
New Zealand, and they've got three really good games as
a preseason tour, so a lot of took the boxes
for them. And again I'm guarantee that compared to other
parts of the world.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
It'll be very easy to bring down here and play
some games.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
What's it costing you, David, Well, we're just a high
gun in this game. We're not the promoter that's with
tug ticket Tech. We're just turning up and playing. But
of course what we are doing is pushing this as
hard as we can because we want our fans to
turn up, we want the city to turn up, we
want the country to turn up, to really showcase what
we New Zealand can do in terms of the sports
event and a football sports avent specifically, and you know

(05:01):
show that that you know Rexham this year, then maybe
another championship shiede, maybe an EPL side next year.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
So the stadium will get paid by the promoters. Do
you get to skim anything offered or not?

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Really?

Speaker 4 (05:12):
I mean we're going to try and sell some shirts
on the game day if where you can get negotiations
with rex and tidied up where they're happy for us
to sell some shirts.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
But I certainly know since we just get paid in
the pearance feed and that's it.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
And when do tickets go on sale, that's the keys.
I'd expect that well, you'd hope that there will be
a lot of people turning up because it's the one
it's the Cinderella story in football of the last couple
of years.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
It is.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
And if the.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Requests we've got to date or anything to go by,
they're sort of running about the same as the semi
final last year when we got thirty five thousand, so
We've already had people ringing up asking for pre sales,
asking for hospitality. How do they buy this, how do
they get in quick? How do they get ahead of
other people? So there's a pre sale that's happening the
next couple of days for Phoenix members. So our current

(05:59):
Phoenix members or people that join the club will get
a pre sale on tickets for a couple of days,
and then there's a few other pre sales, and then
I think public ones on Friday, Friday lunchtime sometime around them.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Cool story, bro, as they say, I'm sure we're going
to have a wonderful time and make the absolute most
of it. David Dome, general manager of Phoenix FC, We
thank you very much for your time.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Kits In thanks thats appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
