Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldegrave
from News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be awesome to welcome David Havilli, Crusaders captain, a
new selection for the Australian New Zealand Invitational fifteen to
use Talks. He'd be David, thanks so much.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
For your time, no pleasure having me on. Thank you
very much here. It's very exciting and looking forward to
getting over there and gets back in.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
How did it all come about?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
I think obviously got a bit of a guest bad
phone call on the Monday and then got a pretty
positive one with the Inject team come calling. So they
gave me a call on Monday and you know, keen
to hear me. So I was really really keen to
get over there and have a crack at the head lines.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Obviously you're focused on making the All Blacks. Had me
mentioned as a as a fallback option a possibility before
that point.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Is it for the Inject team you may, yeah, yeah,
not too sure. I've actually spoken to the coaches yet,
so potentially, like if you come up against British and
rash lines. I think I'm just happy to get out
there wherever I can, so yeah, either sustein or in
the midfield. I I don't mind.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
You didn't have to hesitate too long after they called
and said would you like to have a crack at
the lines?

Speaker 3 (01:22):
No, not at all, not at all. It's like a
lot of guys said, it's pretty special and comes around
twelve years in New Zealand and yeah, to be able
to form ansck team and go over and play them,
it's pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
What do you expect from the team that's been put
together around you? Some familiar faces that you'll know, of course,
Nanny La Mampe and In Shinn and Frazelle and the
Max for Lafakatava as well other players you've come up
against in Super rugby. So what do you expect when
you get together later in the week, early next week
as your former team.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, I think just an early part of the week
just focused on a bit of connection and then yeah,
seeing how Les kiss and I was monster, I guess
played the Lions group and I'm certainly sure that there'd
be a lot of teching rugby be involved. So that's
something that I'm looking forward to.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Did it help miss you know, did it help you
park missing out on the All Blacks at all. I
know obviously your preference would be in the All Blacks,
But did it help you sort of move on from
that disappointment?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
No, not at all. It's always frustrating not being named
in the All Blacks, and you know that's what I'm
here to want to play in the Black jersey, but
it's obviously, Yeah, I guess another thing that I can
focus on and certainly looking forward to the challenge of,
you know, getting in that jersey and hopefully playing against
the lines. It would be awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Does this give you a chance to I just put
your best foot forward and have it, hopefully have a
crack again at you're getting back in the All Blacks
and you know, putting your name up in lights.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, for sure. You know and understand that a lot
of a few guys have played some awesome sup of
rugbies and they deserve the opportunity. But yeah, like I said,
I'll be I'll be really want if I get the
opportunity again, I'll be ready to go. So yeah, playing
against the lines is no better way to teach, and.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
It's a pretty unique combination, isn't it, And an experience
that you'll get in your test career, a whole bunch
of ossies, a few Kiwi's in the mix as well,
coming together a week out and then going and playing
sort of another combination team thrown together.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, that's what Rogue's about, right, It's about connecting and
being able to come from different parts of the world
and put on an awesome show. So looking forward to
catching up and connecting the guys that have been there
and done it before. And you've go to be some
center experienced guys with our team as well.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
How excited are you to work with Ian Foster again
as head coach or one of the coaches in the setup.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, really excited. I thin get a lot of specks
Bozz and the way he coaches, So, like I said before,
there's no doubt that he want to be really attacking
in the way he's playing. So I'm looking forward to
that side of it.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, and you would have played the We definitely did
play the lines back in twenty seventeen. What are your
memories of that night playing for the Crusaders. I think
it was twelve to three no tries in the end,
that good old Appio projects Stadi. What are your memories
of that night?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah? It felt like a classic kicksmich obviously hadn't played
one at that stage. I was haning sort of twenty
two years old, so yeah, real good into sight insight
to what test match foot is like. And I think
takes a few moments to be able to steal with
the on. It's what they did last that night. They
kicked their goals and played a lot of territory and
usual big full packs. So probably looking at something similar

(04:34):
to that, and yeah, certainly looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah, and I guess you're a pretty unique group now
that you get to play the Lions twice in your
career A long different so it's not many players probably
get the opportunity to do that.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Yes, certainly unusual and looking forward to the what's what's
to come? Really haven't really too much of what's happening,
but I know that we're meeting up on the Sunday coming,
so it'd be awesome to get into.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Camp and the Lions play the Reds tonight. Have you
caught much of their two all their games against Argentina
or all the Force? Yes, and how you're rating them
so far?

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yeah, they certainly call it. I feel like they got
some sharp power all across the park, and yeah, awesome
to be able to watch Bundy and there go that peering.
Really enjoy the way they play, and yeah, it's gonna
be an awesome bettle with who they put it on
the park. But I'm pretty pretty enjoyable watching those two
go to work.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
So yeah, David Avelli with us on News Talks, there
be just a couple of final questions, David. Obviously the
Crusader's triumph a couple of weeks ago. Now as you
look back on that season, how immensely proud of you
of captaining that team and a real strong bounce back
campaign after what you went through last year.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah, through in an awesome season, like you said, a
messive bounce back from the whole group and the franchise,
and we just wanted to restore or even to pride
in the juicy again. And you really get back to
what Crusades is good, and it's hard work and worked
extremely hard throughout the preseason, which later really good platform
for us to guard and do what we did and
a lot of things we're now away. We keep our

(06:13):
experienced players on the park and we're able to left
that title at the end of it.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
And I guess with you know, the new stadium on
the horizon as well when you look ahead to that
next year, some some pretty exciting times for the Crusaders
and the offering in twenty twenty six as well. Ethan
Blackader re signing today, it's you know, it feels like
it's all coming together again for the Crusaders.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, there's a lot of exciting things happening, and like
you said, Ethan signing on as a huge bonus for us,
the keepers experience here and have him in the side
of metal certainly looking for looking forward to the new
stadium and yet to awesome buzz down here at the moment.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Fantastic well David, looking forward to seeing you run out
next weekend in those Australia New Zealand jerseys and best
of luck for that game and everything in cat next week.
Appreciate your time.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Awesome Tues. Thank you very much.
