Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Waldergrave
from News Talk zeb.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
We'll join now on the show by David Nika just
signed a big contract to hang out with Doco to
project his career into the stratosphere. That's the idea, isn't it, David.
This is the first step towards superstardom.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Huh yeah, yeah, There's been a lot of small steps
in between, but my hard work and my sacrifice as
finally looking upwards. You know, it's a it's a huge
opportunity to be fighting on such a.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
Prestigious show because it will be a show. This will
be such a buzz all through New Zealand and especially
in Auckland City.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
So I'm expecting a really really cool night and it's
just just nice to be in front of, you know,
the home crowd again. I haven't fought in New Zealand
since my my pro deboo on Joseph Parker's undercard against
Junior Fast, So yeah, huge opportunity for me and for Auckland,
for New Zealand. This is a globally televised on Design
on the September fourteenth, so we've got we've got all

(01:04):
eyeser on us for as for as long as we
want it.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
So I really want to get out there, do well,
come back, do it again, because I think we can
really grow this.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
So tell us what's happening on the fourteenth, what's the upshot?

Speaker 3 (01:16):
So we'll be announcing my opponent in the next week
or two. We actually don't have a name at the moment.
We had one and it fell over. It would have
been awesome, but I think I think the trainer didn't
like the fight. So that's pretty pretty common common issue.
When you've got a record that looks like mine, I guess.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, your record's not entirely bad yet to be beaten.
You're sticking at nine and zero right now. You'd be
pretty proud of that. Does that mean a lot going
into these fights or is it all about the fight
coming out?

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Yeah, it doesn't.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
It doesn't mean anything really, Like every every fight you've
got to take seriously.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
And yeah, i'll tell you what. Finding in front of
the home crowd is a scary idea because you know you've.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Got everything to everything to lose, you know, And it's
not something that I that I like doing. I love
to be an underdog, you know, but this is This
is an opportunity for me to give my fans what
they've been missing out on.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
You know, I feel like I've really missed fighting in
front of you know, my friends, my family.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
You know, like only my mum managed to come over
to Saudi, you know, no one in the UK when
I fought on Joe's undercard over there. It's yeah, it's
just gonna be nice to be around good people again.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
You know, well, what's the move?

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Like, are you going to come across here? It's outside
of Brisbane at the moment. You're gonna set up camp
over here. You're going to go back and forth over
the Tasman. What's your plan over the next couple of years?

Speaker 4 (02:29):
David, I think I think I'll stay here. I think
I'll stay here.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Oh no, sorry, stay in in Gatton. I've I've got
a really good, really good setup, and I've got my I've.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
Got all my systems in place.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
I know, like like I know a lot of people
love having systems in place for you know, streamlining your day,
streamlining your training. I've got everything I need and I've
I've set myself up for success.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
So it's a it's a it's.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
A really it's a really good place to be, especially
being away from the hustle and bustle in a in
a small agricultural rural town.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
So you know, I'm perfectly happy out there.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Oh, David, Nika joins this multi fight co promotional agreements
just someone with Doko then, so of course, behind Joseph
Parker among others, you've got null Thornbree in your corner.
Tell us about that relationship, David, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
I told what I've learned so much from Noel about
the not just not just the boxing itself. He's he's
an amazing, amazing tactician and strategist, but the business side
of things as well. I feel like I could, I
could almost promote a show today, you know, but we've
developed a really, really, really awesome relationship where we know,

(03:36):
I guess, I guess when you first meet a new
coach and you you have like different lingo, you don't
quite understand what they're asking for, everything's falling into place,
and I think my fight in Saudi Arabia was a
perfect example of a perfect showcasing of what we what
we've been working on and taking out someone with a
record like twelve and oh ten knockouts that they're all

(03:56):
good scalps.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
You know.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
I want to keep keep chopping away at the division
and end up on top.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, you're talking about the German you beat up on
Michael sites over in Saudi Arabia. It was quite the
car to be on. Wasn't you see yourself competing more
in events like the Ring of Fire?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
David absolutely, Yeah, That's that's what every every boxer wants
to wants to aspire to. And I'm in a privileged
position where Duco aren't you know, hamstringing me and you know,
holding me, holding me captive. You know, we've fought on
cards all over the world in the last last few years,
so massive opportunity for me to continue that run. And

(04:31):
with their support and guidance, Yeah, I'll be looking at
picking up my first world title and probably the next
eighteen to twenty four months.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I'd say, So, why, Doco, what attracted you to them?
And how long have you actually signed up for? Is
it a set fight deal? Is it amount of years?
What's the skinny around that?

Speaker 3 (04:47):
David won't I won't go into fine print. What's probably
important to mention is that so many of the opportunities
that I've had to date have been arranged and organized
and streamlined through Douco and my relationship with with Joseph Parker,
you know, going and training with Tyson Fury for six
months and fighting on undercards abroad and and actually my

(05:09):
my link with Noel Thornberry was actually produced by or
was created by Doco. So yeah, I have a lot
to oh to Douco and Dave Higgins because I'd really
like to bloody take this all the way into the sunset.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
You know, You've also got a relationship as you've touched on.
But I believe explosive Joseph Jurassic park has got some
skin in the game now he's actually peeled off some
notes to back you. That's pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
Yeah, And he's he's on top of the world right now.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
He's he's a global superstar.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
I'm reading all the comments of you know, people saying like, oh,
like people are.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Different sanctioning bodies in their rankings and how they rank
the heavyweights, and everyone saying, why is Joseph Parking not
not number three? Why is he not he should be
number two? It should be just that he's he's on
top of the world right now. He's on fire.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
So to be backed by him and to know that
he's officially has a role to look after me.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Is it actually really really reassuring?

Speaker 2 (06:03):
You know, you're looking at the cruiserweight crown. Is that
you want to stop You've got thoughts of moving up
a division, You're comfortable with where you're sitting right now, David.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
I'll absolutely be moving up when the time's right, and
if the times I should say, like, I don't think
I'll stop developing until probably my mid thirties, if I'm honest,
Like I think my dad was a bit similar. He
started putting on a bit more size into his thirties
as late bloomers. You know. So I've definitely got my
eyes on the headway title, but it would be foolish

(06:33):
not to not focus on, you know, the next step
and what's what's next.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
