Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk Zed be.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Joining us in the studio, a man who quite often
takes the seat when I've decided I can't cope any
more and run away. So Elliott Smith, welcome on, and
I keep seeing you all day today, following me around
all the other way around, probably the other way round.
Two huge team namings today. Is that an understatement or not?
Speaker 3 (00:32):
No, it feels it feels big. You were there at
the All Blacks team naming. I haven't seen any scenes
like that since at least twenty seventeen the lines to it,
but even maybe before then. And it feels like there
is a real test match coming up this weekend, which
is obvigous. But sometimes you've got to have the attention,
the eyeballs on it to make it feel like it,
(00:54):
and it certainly does.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, it's sticky, the air is thick with it, and
Raiser today Scott Robertson talking around it. He made the
comment about how intense it was. It goes well like
you're all here, so he was not stunned, but he
enjoyed the fact there's a lot of people there. There's
even a couple of South African junos there as well.
I don't come to the.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Trip absolutely, and it shows the interest leave a liver.
And if you had a moment to think that rugby
was on the downward spiral in terms of interest, well
you just needed to be there. And Scott Robinson holden
court for what fifteen to twenty minutes answering the questions
of the rugby media, explaining his team selections to know
that this remains the number one game in our country.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
We're going to talk shortly about the Springbok team that
came out just over an hour ago. We'll look to
that with you, but let's just pick apart the all
black side. I was ranting and raving last night about
minimal changes. You change everything, you're a right mess. You've
got to keep some kind of consistency within the site,
which they had. There've been a couple of moves that
(01:53):
maybe might have surprised a couple of people, But I
suppose you look at what they bring a guy like
Simon Parker. It's a big lump of a human being
and that's what they want against a boka, right it.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Is, And I'm a little bit surprised that they've gone
away from the tupo I I was gonna say experiments,
probably the right wrong word, but they've used him at
number six throughout four of the tests so far this year,
and I think he's been building into that role and
now for the biggest test of the year, they've diverted away.
Now Simon Parker, as you said, big body, big presence.
(02:24):
We saw him debut again Sargentina and Buenosidres. We would
have seen them in that All Blacks mix for the
French series, so perhaps two po I wouldn't have started
all those games if Simon Parker was there. But it
feels like a diversion away from something that had been
I think working and building, you know, at a critical
juncture in the All Black season. Fabian Holland to me
(02:45):
looked a little bit gassed last time out in Buenoside's.
I mean, this is a young man that's been having
a big workload so far this season, five starts, five
Test matches under his belt in his first season, and
I think you look at that and go they want
a bit of impact off the bench, and they probably
didn't get it last time out. In that last twenty
five to thirty minutes in Buenos Aires. They missed Patrick three,
(03:06):
but we know he's out for a few more weeks
as yet with that head injury that he suffered in Cordoba.
And so these are little tweaks that have kind of
had to make. And I think you look at it
from a starting role perspective for the all Blacks, but
there's also a bench you've got to pay as well
and bring in someone like far Began Holland in thirty
minutes of him off the bench could be pretty devastating.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Comes a massive lump, and I think that we're looking
at multiple what he has provided. I won't say it's
likely because they've built this themselves, but they've got a
guy now who can play sex very well and his
most adept in the second row, So that's extra insurance.
A guy who can play a couple of positions, which
is kind of the go to, isn't it in this
day and age?
Speaker 3 (03:47):
It is absolutely and Scott or Listening has been quite
clear on that that they want as many of their
players playing multiple positions or with the ability to play
multiple positions as possible. They've given to boy Via there
a crack I'm sure we'll see it again at some
point this season. But Simon Parker is fighting fire with fire.
We know the spring Box players big humans. Parker has
got the frame and if anything, you know, he's a
(04:09):
six that plays like a six, and I think with
two point five we were beginning to see it a
little bit. But to provide a lot that's playing six
Sion Parker knows blindside Flanka like the back of his hand,
knows where he needs to be. It's an instinctive role.
He's got that big body. He could seriously play lock,
but he's got the pace and the athletic ability that
allows him to be at flanker.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
And you've got the ability with the loose Ford trio
in the second row too, to mix and match. Dare
I say, and I know players prefer or spectators or journalists,
so that they prefer Artie Supersav with his underpants on
the outside, are playing at the open side. He's pretty
adept at number eight, so they can pick and roll
and change de bending on the energy of the game.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
If the All Black's going to scrum ten meters out
from the line, Ardie sav is not packing down at
open side Flanka. He is packing down at number eight,
So that shows the verse. I mean with all wak
and do exactly the same role. But Artie Sarva, we
know how dangerous he is that front football, the ability
to get close to or over the line. From those
(05:10):
short scenarios. He's going to slot in and they're going
to rotate around as as needs be. I do worry
slightly about losing that line option of Tuo po V.
Sorry of losing Fabian Holland and by bringing tup back
into the second row, Park is a line out option
in his own but perhaps just losing a little bit
there against the spring Box this week.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Relying hugely on the accuracy of the centurion from last week,
and I think we can rely on that. I I
don't know though, when Samasoni Takiajo comes off the bench
and we've got the same confidence's ability to hit the mark.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Well, It's funny. Cody Tawer a couple of years ago
felt like he was in the fight for his career.
He lost a lot of form, and now he's back
playing some of the best rugbat of his career. So
he's had this remarkable second wind, and I think the
distance between him and the next cropperhook is in the
country is pretty large at the moment. It was pretty
narrow a couple of years ago. I think it's opened
(06:06):
up again. I mean, takey I hope you came back
from that series injury a year ago now. But he
sorry earlier in this year, but he hadn't played an
All back's Test when he played in when was it Dunedin.
He hadn't played since the World Cup finals, so it's
a long time that he'd been out of the game.
We know those injuries, those league injuries in particular, attack
a while to get back, and I'm sure Takyo Ho
(06:28):
will get there over time.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
In the back line, there's is pushed for changes. In
the midfield, there was pushed through possibly if an abrupt
change at the nine ten the elbow, if you will,
And I thought that maybe the back three might get
a tweak as well. They were all spared that except
for one player. I think a lot of us thought
that it would be Sevu Reese. No slight on him,
(06:52):
but with the failure of Jordan and the like at
the back, they just need some long bodies.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Oh, I think it has to be in some way
a slight on him to be honest, because I think
the Wings didn't play that well in Buenoside. Is not
a lot of GameLine. I think ricco Juan he had
two carries maybe three.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Didn't drop him drop. They might be a hype thing.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I don't know. I do wonder if Caleb Clarke was
fit with they might have both been moved out of
the at least the starting side. As it happens, you
know leicstifying a Nuku only came in at the start
of the Week's probably a little bit early for him
to come and Leroy Carter doesn't give you that height
which they know they need, and Mornie Nadawa will be
interested to come up against We'll get to the box
(07:33):
team in a moment. But he's tall. Canaan Moody, who
is going to be in the eleven jersey for South Africa,
is even taller. I interviewed him earlier in the week.
He is a huge player and so they've got that
aerial Quanti is interestingly Cheeslin Colby and Canaan Mady have
switched wing sides from last time, so it'll be Colby
against Youanne on one wing, and then Nadowah against Moody
(07:54):
on the other so I wondered whether Thelwakes might have
looked at both Nadawah, give us a little bit more height.
He is secure, more secure under the high ball. And
Rico Yuanne. We heard from Scott Robertson earlier in the day.
He was quite clipped. I think in terms of that.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Was quite a surprise. He was very abrupt when they
asked about his future. So we basically he said, well
he better perform where he's gone Berg.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, I mean pretty much. Yeah, absolutely. So look he
I think score was and said it's his home grounds.
You know, this is the opportunity for Rico. You wanted
to show what we know he can do, and we
probably haven't seen enough of recently.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Now. I don't think I've seen such a pointed, passive
aggressive from or heard that from an all black coach
in quite some time. And maybe that's the way it
works for Rica and all power them up right. South
African team came out an hour and a half or
so ago. There are some changes. There are some huge
men coming back, and one of them is their inspirational skipper.
(08:52):
Although he's not where he's supposed to be, is he
he's not.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
Where he's supposed to be and he's also not the captain,
so they've changed a couple of things around, and he
wasn't probably going to play See Close by the way,
even film with blank sick is going to play. He's
at number eight, which is not his usual position. He
played there against Australia at Allis Park that's when he
suffered the injury that's kept him out for the last
few weeks. So usually we see him in the six jersey,
(09:17):
which from a South African perspective is obviously the open
side the way they number their jerseys, but he was
touch and go picked up that negl a few weeks ago.
Jean Luc de Pria was going to start at number eight,
but he picked up a negel this week is now
going home from spring box camp, so Siya is going
to play at number eight. But Russia Rasmus and I
was at the media conference about an hour ago in Auckland,
(09:37):
and he said they announced at started the week the
Jesse Crell, regardless of whether Sea played, was going to
be the captain just for ease of the team basically
this and he was actually quite looking forward to seeing
maybe see has taken a step backwards and it's still
his team. But just take a step backwards and allow
Jessy Crill to lead on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
And that guy's been playing for as long as I
can remember.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Jesse cre the twenty fifteen World Cup. He's playing his
eighty third Test match on Saturday night. He he sort
of faded out of the spring box for a wee bit,
but he's come back with a hiss and a roar
over the last couple of years. And you know, vital
part of that back line. You know, you look at
the combinations Damien de Lende and you Si Kleil that
they're able to roll out Willie LaRue at fullback. We
(10:19):
touched on the wings, Canon Moody and Cheerslin Colby, Andre Pollard.
How long has he been around for eighty three caps?
Feels like he's been around for about twenty five years.
And Grant Williams is probably the most inexperienced outside Canaan
Moody in that back line, but he has taken on
that number one years. You think of Fuff the clerk.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And spring to be seen Fuf to clerk.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Well he's in Auckland. He is there, but he's no
longer the first choice spring box halfback, so you know,
they've managed to build some depth quite nicely, and it's
what the All Blacks are trying to do obviously as well.
And they can call on Fuff the Clerk as their
third string halfback and bring him in knowing what he
can bring in terms of his experience. He's still you know,
very very good players, so it's it's quite an imposing
(11:00):
back line without even getting to the Ford star c.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, just give us the skinny on the makeup of
the pack. With the Giants, they've rolled on an Elliott.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Calisi, the toy markavn Staden. The name that's probably unfamiliar
is Ruin Nokia who starts in the second row alongside
a very familiar name, and even Etsabeth lud de Yaga
comes off the bench. Ahia Snyman, who was an absolute
lump of a lad not in the mix this week,
so Ruins only played nine Test matches to this point.
He's probably the little surprise that they put in the
(11:29):
second row. Otherwise, Thomas the toy, Malcolm Marx ox Nietzche
in the front row. The rolling out experience. Yeah, like
about Marx, Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
That experience is huge and that I really wish that
Peter Steff the toy would like run from South Admica
go over here, man, he's a player.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
And the bench again they've gone with a five to
three split. You know, obviously with the spring Box named
the bench, you go, how many go they go? How
many backs are they gonna put on the one? Two? Three?
This week they've gone three. Might not be the same
next week. But Cobez the Reinach and Sasha Feinberg and Goneozulu,
who was very very good at Alice Park against the
All Blacks last year and what was one of his
first certainly his first test against the All Blacks. He's
(12:08):
coming off the bench. So it's an interesting looking spring
Box team. But you look at it, it's going to
be an aerial assault. It's going to be a lot
of big bodies. There's going to be a lot of collisions.
You know what the coming what the All Blacks are?
You know what the well, you know what's coming out
the All Blocks, don't you?
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Yeah, we know what's coming at them. How they're going
to respond that is the interesting thing and that's what
we'll find out when we open the lines. Shortly. Elliott Smith,
rugby editor and commentator, thanks so much for doing the
markey at the press conferences and sharing that valuable information
here on sportsks. Thanks my friend Pleasure.
