Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk zed B.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
All The Fun of a Circle is coming up on
Saturday night, live and free. Here on that news Talk
is zed B Wallaby's v.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
The All Blacks. It's in Perth. It's quite a distance away.
There's a lot on this.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
South Africa have to be beaten by Argentinabitt who knows
in this rugby Championship and New Zealand can turn around
and beat Australia.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
They still might get to the top of the tree.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
We don't know, such as the chaotic manner in which
this particular tournament has been run.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Elliott Smith got the cheap flight over there.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
He joins us now our rugby commentator and rugby editor,
out of his big job on Saturday night. Elliott, how
are you be pleased to know that live on here?
I told management they've got to put you in at
at least premium economy. It's not fair that my big
mate has to travel over that you're a tall man.
It's not a fair mate complain.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
I appreciate you. I appreciate your advocacy on my behalf Darcy.
As always, No, it's great to be in Perth. It's
twenty seven degrees mid afternoon and it's supposed to rain
on Saturday. I should add for the game itself, but
your beautiful conditions, your black shift to be training to
the morning this morning just to get out of that afternoon.

(01:29):
He's a little bit so they've done things a little
bit differently, although it's not going to replicate the match
conditions as I say, but yeah, warmonth here in Perth.
And obviously some changes to chat about in this all
black side, right.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
So Scott Robinson is like, wow, we've picked a twenty
three to go toe to toe with the quality of
Australian team.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Well, you hope.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
So that's the general idea. But there's there any out
of the numerous changes, Is there anything that piques your
interest in that side, that is you can see being
tailor made to the opposite number in the Wallaby side.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
Well, I think a couple you look at and go,
that's surprising. Didn't expect that in Quintepie at center would
be one of those you know, renowned for what he's
been able to do at second five. Been very impressed
with his efforts off the bench in the last couple
of Test matches, but not renowned as a center. In fact,
he's only played there once at any level you know,
NPC or higher, since the end of twenty twenty. That

(02:24):
was in twenty twenty three an NPC game for White Cuto.
So it's not a position that he's familiar with, at
least starting matches. He might have drifted out there in
the odd one for the Chiefs and White Cutto and
the All Blacks on occasion, but starting a match at
center very very rare for Quincy Pyre over the last
few years, and it's a big defensive role for him.

(02:44):
Billy Procter, I thought, you know, we're still struggling and
not really seeing attacking wise what he's capable of. But
defensively I thought he contained, along with Lee Roy Carter,
the likes of Joseph Suleti and Lenk Nikitau last week
against the Wallabies, so that one raises a few eyebrows,
and then I think with Peter Lucky the other perhaps
surprising selection off the back of the scrum bow. One's

(03:06):
hard and straight, and we saw him bend the line
a little bit when he came off the bench last
week in Auckland and just put some pressure on that
Wallaby's line from the go this week, which is probably
where Wallace the t t probably just with that lack
of rugby he's had this year, hasn't been able to
do so thus far.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
You talk about Quintupia replacing the Billy Proctor. They've given
him plenty of run. It's not unlike what they did
with Damie mckenzy last year and say they, I mean
Scott Robertson gave him a lot of rope. Didn't work
out in Propt's case, though, Is this a case of
we're standing you down because we're not happy, or we're
lifting Quinn up because we think he provides something else.

(03:45):
Is this an anti Billy move or a pro Quinn move.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
I think it's a bit more of a pro Quinn
move in All Odyssey, As you say, they've given Proctor
plenty of opportunities to prove himself. And whether perhaps the
attacking side is what we see from Billy Proctor at
Sens and we probably haven't seen a lot of that
as much as you would have seen him at super
rugby level be able to locke opposition defenses and Scott
Robinson saying a couple of hours ago when we spoke

(04:11):
to him that Billy's played five straight Test matches at
center and seven of the eight matches this year and
just needs a little bit of time to break. But
having said that, I think Quinta Pyre provides that option
to come in at center. I think defensively wise, it's
going to ask a lot of to pire this week
at centri He's going to have to really muscle up
and wrap up those players. You know what attacking option

(04:33):
that he can be. But I think it is a
little bit surprising. And also to put him in at center,
given Antonine at Brown, more regular at centa, Rico Yowani
at center as well. So you look at that and
go the've risen Quinta pier above both of those options.
It's a pro quidn move I think, rather than an
anti Billy Proctor or perhaps any of those other player moves.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Well, Rico makes his way back in again, doesn't he
off the bench? And Ruben Love may yet has spent
a bit of time at pivot, which is of course
where they've put Damien McKenzie.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
How do you think that's going to opera? We will
have our opinions about Damien McKenzie. A lot of them
aren't hugely positive, but is what it is.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Is he going to be able to handle the jandor
head because the Australians they want revenge.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
They do absolutely and look he has to step up
because remember back to the corresponding test last year in
Sydney when the All Blacks that are comfortable lead then
sort of whittled away by Australia and that was the
point that Scott Robinson said, thanks, thanks for everything, Damien,
but we're going to drop you to the bench and
Bowden Barrett's our first choice ten here. So it's a
little bit of a chance, I guess, for Damien McKenzie

(05:40):
to prove himself this weekend. I know there were a
lot of calls for Ruben Love to be frustraight in
and start at ten, but his body of working really
hasn't done a lot for the you know, it was
only midway through the hurricane season that he was put
there this year. It would be a bold call from
the All Blacks. I mean they have made a couple
of other bold calls this week, but I think it
would be a bold one to put Ruben Love in
at ten. In a test match of this magnitude. As

(06:02):
you mentioned at the top, Darcy, you know, the Rugby
Championship is not necessarily there for the taking, but they
still have a chance to win this title, so they'd
love to wrap that up. I think McKenzie, you know,
is obviously the second choice ten in his current squad,
but they still retain a little bit of faith in
him and I think that's the option rather than putting
Reuben Love in there, thrusting him in what is you know,

(06:23):
still a musk wins test match with the All Blacks
as they tried desperately to find some consistency which has
been eluding them for the last few weeks.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
And one last thing, Elliott Smith and thanks so much
for joining us from Perth. A big day for Leicester
fining a nukel after eighteen months of drift, he finds
himself back in the All Blacks again. That's It's quite
a stimulating selection, isn't it It is.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
I mean he's been very stimulating for Tasmin so far
and the opportunity is that he's had the NPC and
he's moved across the back line. He started at twelve
in a couple of games he's played center, he's played
on the wing for them as well. He gets his
opportunity on the left wing this week with Caleb Clark injured,
so he took his opportunity in the World Cup quarterfinal
against Ireland in twenty three that was his last Test match.

(07:05):
Really looking forward to see what he can do. I
don't think we've seen the best of him at Test
level as yet. Obviously with a big break for Toulon
in between, he looks like a really positive option. Maybe
with Caleb Clark if he had been fit, they might
have even looked at him at center this week. But yeah,
very much looking forward to seeing what he might be
able to do roaming around the wide channels against the
Wallabies this week.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
And we're looking forward to listening to what you provide
as well at news Talk zeb Elliot.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Smith, thanks very much for your time.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
You stay safe anytime, Darthy and it's Rugby editorly commentator
Elliot Smith over in person.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
