Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talk zedb our Man with a plan.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
On a plane is Elliott Smith. Where's he gone? Japan?
He's following the All Blacks to the land of the
Rising Sun. He got there is and stopped working. He
joins us now to give us the skinny on the
press conference, Elliott, here we go again, Air Miles, Elliott
will call you.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Mate, even Darcy good to catch up and the All
Blacks into it here in Tokyo. With the selection of
this squad, we've been earlier than usual as well for
a test match on a Saturday, announcing it on Tuesday
to get out of the way. But some selections there
that have created plenty of talking points from this All
Blacks team.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
So the rationale behind doing this so early struck me
as a surprise, Like, what do you mean Tuesday?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, exacinitely through me by surprise as well. Look, there's
a couple of just logistical things from my understanding around
trainings and other things have got going on in where
their training is quite a way out of Tokyo itself,
So just logistically wise, they figured it was easier to
name the team today in Scott Robertson when asked about it,

(01:17):
sort of just see, well, you know there were a
dozen cameras if not more, at today's trainings. Everyone would
have figured it out anyway, So it's out there, and
you know, Eddie Jones has a day or so more
to prepare with these names than he would have otherwise.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
It won't make any difference. But that's okay, right to
the team itself. A couple of debutants, good news for them,
and the return of a half. What else have you
got for us?

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Yeah? Look, I think you look at that team and
it's an interesting balance, isn't it. All players that need
game time for various reasons, some through injury reasons. Can
royguard Stephen Petafetta being the two that stand out there
regard playing his first test of the euro cors Parafeta
having not played for the All Blacks since July. And
then you've got the other players that kind of need

(02:03):
some game time at this level because they've made an
impression for good or bad and then haven't been seen.
And I'm talking to the likes of Samma Pendy Fenaw,
who came off the bench in one of the South
African Tests, but otherwise hasn't been cited for the All
Black since the Tests against England Black in July, so
he needs some time back at international level. That front

(02:23):
row as well have largely been consigned to coming off
the bench this year. And there's other players as well.
Billy Proctor name that stands out. I thought he was
very impressive on debut for the All Blacks against Fiji
and San Diego way back in July. Bill that was
three months ago now, and he hasn't had a chance
to build on that good impression he made there. So

(02:44):
I think in this test it's about a balance of
getting players game time and also giving opportunities to players
that have fallen out of favor or fallen by the
wayside through selectional injury issues. So perfect opportunity to do
so hard running track against Japan Saturday afternoon daytime rugby.
It's a good opportunity to get some of those cob

(03:04):
webs out for some of these players.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
The term is a fair salmon, and you could describe
the entire pack is that this is one heavy pack,
not quite tipping the ton, but close.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Oh absolutely, it's remarkable. You look at the front row,
certainly the biggest front row that's probably ever started for
the All Blacks in terms of the mighty Williams Pasily
or Tossi, the two heaviest props and two individual biggest
players the All Blacks have had to suffer on Miller,
no shrinking, Violet, no small player himself. So it's a

(03:35):
big front row. And then Fena Wallace to Titipaoto's you know,
got a heck of a lot of mass about them
as well. So this is a huge pack that the
All Blacks are going to put out there against Japan.
And look, I kind of like the way that they've
they've gone about it and putting a pack that's going
to use these strengths and try and run over the

(03:56):
top of this Japan pack on the weekend, which is
traditionally small. They've got some big players in there as well,
buying large, traditionally smaller Japan pack. The All Blacks want
to beat them with size, and looking at their pack,
you can see how they want to do it.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Who stands to gain the most out of this for
a good performance, or who's got the most weight on
their shoulders as opposed you know, for what they actually
have to do is it a case of female because
he didn't have an effect last time. Is it a
t T running in his favorite number eight position. Where's
the energy light?

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Elliott, Well, I think there's a couple of ways you
could go about this, to be honest, ire seeing and
for me, I look at Feenw and go yep. He's
a player that hasn't quite made it at test level yet.
He's got the rurability. We've seen that at super rugby
level but hasn't been able to take his opportunity. By
putting him at blindside this weekend and Wallace a tt nunberrat,

(04:49):
it just gives the All Blacks a look at both
of those players in those positions they can mullet going forward.
Sam Kaines got the experience on the open so flank,
but we know that his time is ticking in an
All Blacks Jusey as well. So they've got a few
things that they are looking to weigh up there. Whether
it's an eye of the future by going female at
sex and to t to get eight and then maybe

(05:10):
Savilla going forward as the open side from twenty twenty six,
that could be an option for the All Blacks. But
you we're potentially looking at things, so maybe later in
the tour, but maybe also twenty twenty five and beyond.
With this All Blacks team, a couple of other ones
are just going to stand at. Cam Rouygad has to
be one of you the players that we're looking at
this weekend because he was anointed through his super Rapi

(05:32):
form as the All Blacks new number nine. Well now,
Cortez Ratima, her only debut this year has overtaken him
in terms of test appearances, so we're a bit of
a statement from cam Roygard to make this weekend, I
think as well, and I think you look at Billy
Proctor as well. So impressive on debut, chance for him
to go forward and make more of that opportunity. So

(05:53):
all around the park there's chances for players to stake
their claim as well. But to just to round out
this point, Darcy, I'd look at Patrick Deupiloto. He's been
named the Camptain this week. We know what kind of
leader he is. At the start of the season, is
going to be Scott Barrett and Patrick toy plot to
the first choice locking duo for the All Black Stupo
Vai has had something to say about that through Patrick

(06:13):
toy pilot to his injuries and he's taken those opportunities.
So Sam dry Patrick three plot a big chance for
them to impress this weekend and make sure they're not
forgotten about. Is the players prepared to head north next
weekend to England and beyond.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
What did the Barrett family do to raise it? It's
not one of them there.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
He loves the Barretts. I think the Uruguay game at
the World Cup last year they didn't field a Barrett
in the twenty three and another occasion they're very, very rare.
But what I think at points to Darcy is I
think you can go. You know, Jordi Barrett is still injured.
They want to get a right for what is three
big week to what are three big weeks coming up

(06:52):
in England, Ireland and France. So getting him healed is
the main focus there. Scott Barrett, we know what he's
been doing and he's obviously the captain of this team
and I think you can go. Bodhen Barrett will start
at ten against England next weekend on the basis of
him not being in the twenty three altogether. They guying
to send up some players early on Friday to England

(07:13):
to get acclimatized and get ready and begin their preparations
on the ground there. I think you can pencil and
bowtem bar it at ten next weekend at Twickenham to
start against the English.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
And finally, is that Piet Jones made an apparent shit.
I'm talking about Eddie cart wake till he starts mouthing
off one of the best things but international rugby.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
I'm sure, well, absolutely, Look he's good like that. He
has got a media opportunity later in the week that
I'm hoping to get to. All things going to plan
interesting to hear what he has to say about this
All Blacks team and what he makes of it, if
it's anything like his last time in Japan when he
was playing the All Blacks. That was twenty nineteen England

(07:53):
when he was coaching them. He's had a couple of
other international hats since then. It should be fun. So yeah,
he'll pop up, no doubt about that, because that's what
he Jones does really well.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
And finally, his team is being announced when we are
going to find out who the bray Blossoms are Thursday.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Yeah, as a tradition, so they'll we will be naming
their team on Thursday. The All Black's gone early with
that one, but they'll be naming their team on Thursday.
They've gone with a lot of inexperienced players this year.
Interesting to see where the Eddie Jones sticks with that
theme as they come up against the All Blacks.
