Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News talks'd be it's going.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Out to Elliott Smith. He's been hanging around spring Box naming,
which I believe is a hop, skip and a jump
from your appalatial accommodations. Elliott.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Welcome to the show, Darcy. Good to catch up as always.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Right, So what happened? What's the team looking like? I've
got it right in front of me and I can
see there have been some changes as well. It's not
only the All Blacks have chopped and changed to this.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Fixture, No, exactly. And look the spring Box first and
foremost will have their captain See Leasy for Saturday nights
match new local time here and Sunday mornings in New Zealand.
A facial fracture he took against the All Blacks last
weekend as a result of that tackle made by Samkin.
(00:56):
I just heard from Russy Erasmus that it's sort of
a nose fracture at the moment, and See has decided
to push himself to play this weekend. It sounds like
he might needed to get it reset at some point
in the future, probably against He probably take the weeks
off against Argentina, but he's going to play through it
this week. He's pretty confident they can do no further damage.
So see I Calisi is going to give the old
(01:18):
schnozz a workout against the All Blacks. So that's the
headline I suppose of the team. They've changed up plenty
else elsewhere as well. Last week's nineteen combination who I
thought were pretty impressive in Cobs, Rahnach and Sasha at
Feinberg in Gomezulu well for the latter he's on the bench,
but Grant Williams in the familiar phase of Andre Pollard
(01:40):
at nine and ten this week even It'sabeth back into
the run on side, Peter Stephane Toy moves back to
the blind cider that's the number seven jersey in South
African parlance, and Canaan Moody comes on the right wing
and Willie LaRue at fullback, so he changes a plenty
from both signs as you say, Darcy, So.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Tell us about the change at nine and ten and
what triggered or initiated that move after what you said.
They weren't exactly run over, were they last weekend? So
Williams and Pollard, I mean, Williams very effective off the bench,
But what's the rationale behind this, do you think?
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, I think just a sort of a rotational thing
as well, Handra Pollard exceptionally good player, Sash and Fineberg,
Gonmszulu very very good as well, and I think there's
a feeling from Russia Rasmus that they can add an
impact off the bench and Polo sort of direct things
for the first sixty or so minutes. I think it's
(02:35):
the horses for courses approach from RUSSI Erasmus, I don't
think in his mind from what I can gather just
listening to him below before that there's a pecking order necessarily.
It very much feels like he sees them equal both
the Nines and Ten's rumboring fuff to clerk out with
injury as well, so they've got him to come back
in the mix in terms of their half backs. But
(02:57):
Pollard experienced heed feels like it's the right player for
this week. And I guess that Finberg and Gobzili I
thought was very very good. But some of the attack,
I think Russia Rasmus just wants to tidy up a
little bit and feels that Pollard might be the man
to pull the strings this week as well. The other
interesting point, Darcy is that they're reverted to a five
to three bench, which is very real poor South, and
(03:19):
I'm going.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
To ask about that just looking to as going hold
on that looks a must traditional.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah, they have five to three benches is what they've
gone with. So interesting there there was a lot of
speculation that this week they might go to a seven
to one after doing a six to two last week,
but they've gone back to five to three. So Russia
Rasmus doing his best to keep the All Blacks and
the selectors guessing is to what they put out. But
make no mistake, this is a very experienced spring Box side,
(03:47):
and you can call on the kind of players in
bringing Pollard back into your run on side. That shows
the kind of experience that you've got a very very strong,
loose forward trio with KAlSi fit again or still fits
and and Peter stated Toy moving back to his preferred position,
and it feels like you don't lose much by changing
around some of these pieces in the spring Box team,
(04:09):
such as the depth that they've built in recent times.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
As far as the All Blacks are concerned because of
course you're covering off both sides in this exchange. That
team came out a few hours ago, and you think
that jumped out at you in particular because there are
again a number of changes there, some of them injury enforced,
some of them not.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, plenty plenty of that jumped out Darcy. I guess
you look at the bench and that was where I
was always going to direct my eyes as soon as
the team came out and you see t J. Pettinawer
and Bowden Barrett the I think that's a good move. TJ.
Pett and how has played the bulk of his Test
career coming off the bench. He knows that role very
very well, and I think it's probably where he maybe
should have been in recent weeks as well, that you
(04:50):
know he's in the twilight of his career, he's leaving
after the season. That's the bench role he's perfected and
been so good at for so long. So I would
have put him there on the bench in recent weeks.
I know why they didn't with Ratzima and the inexperience there,
but they've gone for that this week in Boden Barrett
as well. He played that bench roll to a plum
in both tests against England, and you know then was
(05:11):
elevated to run on side with seven petafets are injured.
But you look back and go, actually, that was the
bench working exactly how you wanted to and it hasn't
quite worked that way since the other one that jumps out.
You know, obviously injury and force as well. But Wallace
to Tt earning the trust to start a blindside flanker
in against the spring box in Cape Town, a pressure environment.
(05:33):
This is his first test start and it's position that
he hasn't played so far this year. He played all
his rugby exclusively at number eight, had a couple of
games for Harbor there at blindside last year. But this
is a real acid test for Wallace a TT and
the possibility what he might be able to add to
this loose forward going for But I really like it.
I think you all Blacks have needed another ball carryinger
(05:53):
in the Titan recent times to help out Ardie SV.
I think Eason Blackhead has been exceptional. I was an
advocate for Ardie sav moving back to open side and
was a t T get eight, but with the injuries
and things like that, putting a Wallet's on the blind side.
Sam Can remains an open side in Ardie Savre at
number eight. I think it's a it's a big opportunity
(06:14):
for especially Wallace to stand acclaim on the state of
claim rather than this all Blacks team.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
What does this say, Alice Smith about Summer Penny fin
Now he was the instrumental last week, but this is
he's been sat right back down again.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Yeah, I think exactly that, And I think we probably
haven't seen him at test level and do what he's
done at super rugby level. I think the jury is
still out for him on his test prospects. Last week
coming off the bench, was hoping to add impact penalizes,
just didn't quite get into the game, so I think.
And he hadn't played a role in the previous couple
(06:50):
of TC either, so I think it's a bit of
a work in progress with any few. May just need
to go back and get some NBC under his belt
maybe than play the bledders Low. It's going to be
interesting to see what they do there. The other one
is well Darcy Golden Papa LETI fit again. Not in
the twenty three. He's been the starting Steven for most
of the tests so far this year, had a thumb
injury last week that ruled him out and then he
(07:11):
hasn't in the twenty three this week, which I think
is also an interesting selection with Luke Jacobson prioritized over
the bench, so a real question mark, I suppose over
what they want to see o at Dalton over the
next week, while as well to get the All Blacks
Jusy back for him.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Last sixty seconds, Elliott, what's the general atmosphere being like
in Cape Down, what's the talk being like around this
exchange spring Box the South Africa. I'm presuming that they're
very happy with their side, but they have expectations that
the word might turn. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Look, I think the spring Box very complimentary before around
the All Blacks and what they expect from them, and
very complimentary of the efforts last week. I think they
expect another physical and tough test match and Russia. Rasmuds
was a quick to point today. He said they won,
but it was you know, it was a tough test
against the All Blacks and especially back to Sea Levely.
(08:04):
Things that might help the All Blacks as well. In
the first game at Datchel Stadium in Cape Town with
the Old Newlands no longer in operation, so I think
since they expect the All Blacks to come at them hard,
and he referenced the Argentina loss at Wellington, they bounce
back and thrash them the week after. So they're expecting
a bit of an All Blacks backlash in Cape Town
this weekend, and.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
We're expecting one. Hella, hella cool from yourself, three o'clock
