Speaker 2 (00:33):
Hello, Welcome, Welcome, Wildom. This is a sports talk on
News Talk ZB. I'm Darcy Watergrove. Thank you for letting
me pollute your radio. We're talking sport from now through
until eight o'clock. If you'd like to join in with
the oral cacophony, by all means, please do oh eight

(00:54):
hundred eighty ten eighty three phone number nationwide speaking text
nineteen nineteen said be z B before your ange because
the text will costs you a small text charge, ringing free.
Coming up in this hour on the program Surfing to
a bit of surfing and why wouldn't you or me

(01:15):
or all of us? Billy stamman It joins the program.
He is one of two New Zealanders selected to represent
New Zealand in the ocean, making a commotion in the
ocean surfing out of all places, Tahiti, it's Paris, the Olympics.
It's very distant Paris, but it's Paris all the same.

(01:37):
Chop Opo is the name of the wave that they're
going to be surfing on. It is an absolute monster.
Billy stem And joins us to talk about that second
Olympic Games, and we'll touch on this crazy old surf
park that looks like it's going to be opened north
of Auckland in a couple of years time. They've got
resource consent amazing. It's a sporting infrastructure situation that's working. Wow,

(02:04):
we're not talking like a around to play Tess cricket
on covered stadium to play rugby and no, but a
surf park. And you know what's even better, No public money,
no council money, no government money, just a bunch of
gcs who went out there and decided they'd like to
build a waveport. We'll talk about that, but priminarently we'll
talk about the Olympic Games with Billy Stemmen later on

(02:26):
in the piece. Shortly o old mate Steve Price joins
us on the show. Pricey of course, former Warriors skipper
form a bulldog player, former Queenslam player, former kangaroo player.
And I can say, old mate, I met him about
twenty years ago. Get on the like a house on
the fire. He's a good rooster. He joins us to

(02:47):
preview what's going to happen tonight round about three hours time,
and I'll grab a couple of words out of him too,
around the Wars and what they face now. After talking
to Richard Ago yesterday on the program about the the
lack of punishment, if you will, the team hasn't really

(03:07):
changed much, a couple of minded changes through injury. But
this is a Warriors team that are going to have
to make up for the indiscretions. And that's generous, the
indiscretions up against the Gold Coast Titans last week, they've
got Brisbane Broncos. What can we expect the price chogues.
And then I invite your calls to the programs well know,
not about origin, Well I expect to be few keen

(03:30):
fans out that that want to climb into it about
the the lack of action from the coaching staff with
the Warriors as far as selection is concerned, and how
comfortable you are with that. I get why they're doing it.
I understand what today Gar is saying. I get that
Andrew Webster's more of a coach than I'll ever be,

(03:52):
and they're going through this particular motion. But I wonder
how comfortable the fans are with this? And you are
the fans, oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. It's
coming up shortly before any of that though, at ten
past seven. Let's do yes. And in sport today, Ardie
Savia has spoken around not being awarded the All Black

(04:13):
captaincy in a move obvious to anyone with any Rugby
now so Scott Barrett was handed the armbat controversy. Artie
showed great captaincy potential though by rolling out these lines
when questioned by the media.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Not really. I think all the.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Noise was the outside noise, so was everyone here.

Speaker 4 (04:31):
But like for us, you know, we just want to
Obviously it's always a privilege, but again it's always the privilege.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Being an all black noise privilege processes Next learnings. Queensland
honker ben Hunt has denied speculation that the return of
the Treill Mitchell is living rent free in their skulls.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
He hasn't got into her heads at all. You know,
we've done preparation on him like you would on any
good player. You know, there's a lot of guys in
that team that are gonna hurt us as well, so
we can't just go into a state of riger match
completely worried.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
About one player.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. It's sunder Usakaz handed
back as IBF strapper, Duboy and Joshua are going to
trade punchers for the belt in September.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
It's a wee present Anthony and Daniel.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
Listen.

Speaker 6 (05:20):
I know I be title important to you.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Tell it my present to you on September to only one.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah, bro, they took it off. You don't try and
tell us you're gifting it to them. You don't defend
it against Dubois whose number one. They're going to take
it off. You start with the Santa Claus stuff. No
one's believing it, And no, I wouldn't say it to
his face because I may not have a face anymore.
White Ferns, Skipper, Sophie, Divine Noser. Team can compete at

(05:48):
the highest level, but achieving that on a regular basis
really is the next step.

Speaker 7 (05:54):
I guess in that last odio that when we get
things right both with bat and ball, that we know
we can beat the best sides in the world. So
that's something we've identified about, especially with fifty over cricket.
How can we continue to play consistent cricket for longer period.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Of time and the eight Matt series versus England starts
at midnight tonight. It's three One day Internationals followed by
five T twenty fixtures and ladies and gentlemen.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
That's sport today.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
We're joining it now by Steve Price, a former New
Zealand Warriors, one Warriors, Penrose Warriors, whatever you want to
call them, Skipper of course Bulldocks player as well, and
he played for Queensland and he played for Kangaroos. He's
rather handy, is our Stephen Price looking forward to tonight
and I'm sure that is the understatement, Steve, Welcome to
the show. Let's face it. Come midnight tonight, it could

(06:46):
be sealed and two for Queensland.

Speaker 8 (06:49):
Absolutely mate, huge game in an iconic stadium mcg so.
I think it's probably a little bit more favorite towards
Queensland because either most of Victoria lives in Queensland or
they support Queensland.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
So crowd means that much, even though it's a so
called neutral venue.

Speaker 8 (07:06):
Ninety five thousand their mates, So you know, if the
majority of going for one team, I reckon that's going
to be a pretty good, you know, a pretty good
extra man, I reckon. A bit of pressure on the
referees most of them probably wouldn't know what the rules are,
but hopefully most of them will and they'll be able
to get behind the mighty Queenslanders.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
What you're talking about the referees or the fans.

Speaker 8 (07:27):
No, the referees, of course they know the rules, mate, absolutely, it's.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Going to say that was pretty brave for you. Where's
the winning and the losing of the gain? Do you
thing just rolling it back to what happened last time around?
Is we think you can pull out of that game, Steve,
that you think might make the difference for you the team.

Speaker 8 (07:43):
Yeah, other than the play agetting sent off, I think
it's going to be key with field position, so you
know whoever's going to be able to be in the
attacking field position more than coming out of trouble. Field
position is certainly going to be a better chance of
scoring tries, which and puts the other team under president
to try and defend right, So not making errors, not

(08:03):
giving penalties away, making it really difficult for your opposite
all night is going to be the key. And New
South Wales I picked the team that's quite a large,
like quite a big team and looks like they're going
to try and Bulliers so you know, they're going to
hope that they're going to be in goodball sort of
position more than what they are coming out of trouble.
And hopefully we've got obviously the speed and fever the

(08:26):
skill there, so if we can be in attacking positions,
hopefully that's going to really cause problems for the for
the Blues all night.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Rees Walsh obviously targeted last time around, hardly ideal. I
do believe he was targeted, and what's likely to happen
this time around, they're going to carry on aiming aiming
at him.

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Yeah, I don't know if he was targeted.

Speaker 8 (08:44):
May he was just run on the foot and Blake
come in and made a tackle and it just went wrong.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
So I didn't think he was targeted.

Speaker 8 (08:50):
You know, there was a talk before the game that
they're going to targeting, but that's not why I got
knocked out. My biggest thing for a Reese a little
bit of a question mark is he hasn't played since
that game. Hopefully he's just going to be Reese Walsh
and he's not going to be a bit gunshot because
you know, I was a pretty big shot and it's
a physical game in State of Origin, I'm sure New
South Wales is going to let him know. He won't

(09:11):
forget where he's playing in state of origin. So yeah,
if we can sort of be like I was said before,
in that good field position, he's going to be running
out of sort of around half way rather than trying
to catch bombs on his tryline or you know, getting
waxed really hard as he catches it. So the better
position we can be, the better it's going to help
Reese and hopefully Reese is going to get a plenty

(09:31):
of opportunities with the footing and his speed.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
But is he likely to be gun shy from what
you know of them or just chuck himself in regardless?

Speaker 8 (09:39):
Yeah, I don't know him real well, but the way
I see him play footy, I would say that he's
not really gun. So he's got a lot more carriage
and what I had as a ball player. Anyway, he
has a crack mate, whether he thinks it's going to
work or not, backs himself. So that's why he's the
player he is, and that's why we're very happy he's
our number one.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Steve Price joins the program a few changes with the
Blues kind of understand that as well after that start
that to manage McGuire head as his new South Wales coach,
he's rung the changes in I suppose the big ones
Latrell Mitchell, this guy we never quite know what he's
going to turn up with. How do you rate what
he's going to do this time around?

Speaker 8 (10:15):
Yeah, but you know he's been out of the Origin
scene for a couple of years now. And fantastic player
or you know, awesome player, but if we can have
the ball more than what they do. He's not a
real fan of defending. You'd rather run the footy. His
effort on effort probably isn't as good as what you
know it could be. Particularly he's been playing fullback for
the last three years, so he's not used to being

(10:36):
in that front line defense, having to make twenty thirty
forty tackles a game, you know, having to make decisions defensively.
He's been protected a little bit at South because he's
been at fullback. So he was one of the best
centers in the game when he was playing center, but
he hasn't played for probably three years, so it's going
to be new for him. But I'm sure he's prepared
really well and the other positions that were all the

(10:57):
changes that were made. Mate, most of those guys that
have come in were their first choice anyway, and they
are rather injured or didn't have enough game time under
their belt. So you know, Moses was probably going to
be chosen over Nico and then Mcinness got the start
because Cam Murray was injured, so the trail comes in
for the suspended Suali. So I wouldn't say that they're

(11:19):
gone and wheeled the acts. It's been more that's their
team they were going to choose to start with if
they could have, but those players were injured.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
Now they're available.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Lot to admire though about New South Wales after basically
being absolutely hawked at the start when so early got
seen off. They showed a bit of a bit of heart,
didn't they, which is what you'd expect, but just they
can't do that. Twelve against thirty never works.

Speaker 8 (11:43):
Not more not in Lea and you know they did
show plenty of heart, but at the end of the day,
you know, we've got to be good enough to take
the opportunities and we're able to do that in a period.
They then have made some changes which we found a
little bit more difficult and it made it a real struggle,
and particularly getting out of their trouble and that type
of thing, so you know, then we're able to identify

(12:04):
that and then we've got to know a couple of
tries late.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
I was really.

Speaker 8 (12:07):
Happy with how Queensland did what they did. New South
Wales was absolutely brave. Their fans certainly wouldn't have been
disappointed with what they put out on the field.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
And that's what State of Origins about. Mate.

Speaker 8 (12:16):
You don't give up just because you've got twelve men
and they've got thirteen. You know, there's been plenty of
times when teams have won in that situation. Just sort
of seventy three minutes of it makes it a little
bit hard.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Is there a match up that you're really excited about
and I'm presuming it's up the front somewhere like a
Carrigan Haas situation. Where do you think that I suppose
the big matchup is from your point of view and
the one you're looking forward to to most.

Speaker 8 (12:39):
Steve, Yeah, Well, you Kerrigan and Murray, for example, they're
two very different players. They play a different style. Paddy,
particularly in Origin, is more run first and passed, whereas
when he plays for the Broncos, he's more passed and
then run, so he changes his game completely which really
works for us. In Queensland Kem Murray he's more of
a ball runner and then.

Speaker 3 (12:59):
Does a bit of passing as well.

Speaker 8 (13:01):
Obviously up front you know Collins and then you're off
Kauaki coming off the band and you know those sort
of guys. You know that's going to be really tough
against Hassen and these sort of goes from New South Wales.
But I really think the big challenge is going to
be on the edges. Like the back rowers. We've got
Many and Sewer and then you know New South Wales
have got Martin. They're really good players and you know

(13:23):
they're going to really make sure that those guys get
plenty of footy and try and cause some real damage
on the edges. You know it's half back five eights
that are defending around that.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Area, haven't They got Crichton on the other.

Speaker 8 (13:38):
He's been playing outstanding mate and he had a really
good first game, so yeah, and he does.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
He terrorizes both of them. Martin and Crichton.

Speaker 8 (13:45):
Both terrorized there half back or the five eight for
the opposition. You know, who we got Little Tommy and
obviously Daily, so they're going to have to be right
on there on their guard and hopefully in New South
Wales is the same situation you're.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Going to have to be with Moses and Law.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Yeah, what about Cape, Well, do you think he's going
to have much to do with the price of it
and the way things work. I mean, we've got Mitch Barnett,
he's the eighteenth man for the Blues. There's a couple
of Warriors involved, which we are quite interested in.

Speaker 8 (14:09):
Yeah, it's rare for a news that was when they're
playing for the Warriors. But yeah, certainly we've had a
lot of Queenslanders. It'll be really interesting, maate, how Billy
wants to play it, whether he wants to leave Kurt
there for a just in case, or he wants to
get him out there around the twenty minute mark to
thirty minute mark and then if something happens then he
can sort of adjust it when he's on the field.

(14:30):
So I suppose it's just going to depend on how
the game starts, what we have to do reaction wise,
if there's any injuries, or you know, if we've been
defending for a long time and he's got to make changes,
but I'd expect that he try and hold him, probably
just before halftime or just after halftime.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
Hopefully we don't have any injuries in our outside backs.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Want something to smile about for wise fans because there
are two players involved. Well, kind of in origin, but
back home with the Warriors, he scraped your head after
a sixty six six thrashing at the hands of the Titans,
there was something else. As a former skipper, what did
you make of that?

Speaker 8 (15:05):
Yeah, I couldn't believe it, mate. I was looking at it,
and particularly at the Gold Coast. You know, we always
played really well there because you know, Carew's live on
the Gold Coast, so it was almost like a home game.
To see that. I was really surprised. I'm really excited
this weekend, mate. I'm fine over for the old boys
game up against the Broncos. So hopefully being an old
boys game, boys will be one embarrassed from the weekend

(15:27):
and then two, you know, we really want to put
a show on for all the old boys that are
going to be there on Sunday, you know, shout out
nostalgia and get back to where they should be and
where they know they are.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
You're not that old, mate? Do you still fit one
of your jumpers?

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Definitely not exatly the first one when the Timpty was
our coach. As just on that.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
There's been no real changes, a couple of tweaks around
this team from your experience, and you've had plenty of it.
Steve's is this the best way for energie weeps to
go to? Say? Listen, guys, you made that mess. You
dig your way out of it. It's your responsibility as
opposed to maybe wielding the acts.

Speaker 8 (16:07):
Not necessarily you know, the UA out of it. It's
more of a respect and a pride thing.

Speaker 3 (16:12):
Mate.

Speaker 8 (16:13):
All of those guys that played on the weekend would
be really disappointed and pretty down, and they would have
felt as though they let down their fans and family
and sponsors in the club and coach and everybody. And
there's no better way to then get back out on
the field and turn around.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
Right.

Speaker 8 (16:28):
All those guys that played are guys that he's had
now for a year and a half. You know, he's
got to know them really well. They've got to understand
how he wants them to play. It doesn't always go
that way.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
You know, you've got.

Speaker 8 (16:39):
An opposition you're up against. Sometimes they do things that
makes it hard for you to play the way you
want to play. So no better way for those guys
to get out on the field and show faith in
the coach that he trusts them, he believes in them.
And then also for the boys to repay you know,
everyone who supports them and comes along every week and

(17:00):
get back out on there on the field and turn
it around against the Broncos team that you know, they're
sort of not flying form at the moment either, so
they're going to be one to turn that around also,
So it'd be game for both.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
You're a caucusse Steve Price. Always good to hear your
voice mate, Safe travels when you get over here and
go and try and squeeze into that first jersey idea.

Speaker 3 (17:21):
Won't be a good look, brothers, not a good look.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
No need for the TMO. We've got the breakdown on
Sports Talk Cool News Talks, b.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Twenty three after seven Sports Talk Here on News Talks,
eb Steven Price for Kangaroo, Queens, Lane, of Course, Warriors,
Skipper from Back and the Day his thoughts around what
may or maynapp happen tonight. Producer Millicit is telling me
that New South Wales are favorites going into this match
by how much t a B bidding favorites? Yeah, two

(17:56):
dollars fifteen Right, Okay, that is interesting. I suppose they're
backing the fact that New South Wales are desperate, they
have their backs against the wall, and maybe Queensland aren't
at high I think they had last time around was
very impressive. But home advantage, Well, I was going to say,
isn't it in Melbourne? This game in Melbourne? That's what
Steve was saying, though, I reckon there's probably more fans

(18:17):
of the Maroons in Melbourne than there are many.

Speaker 9 (18:20):
Yeah, I was going to say that, Yeah, they love
New South Wales and Victoria, don't they famously? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (18:24):
I don't know what they do. It's odd odds, but
there you go. I won't be betting. I got rid
of my phone account. I got rid of my Owntinet
account as well. It's probably saved me an fortunate over
the last couple of years. We touched on the Warriors.
Toward the end of that conversation, I like to take
some calls on that eight hundred and eighty ten eighty head,
which at a go on the program yesterday is the

(18:47):
assistant coach of the Wars that the team was named.
It looked like, on the face of it, even though
I'm sure they got torn apart halfway through the match
and again on the plane on the way back, that
most of the Warriors have got away with that performance.
It was pointed out by Steve it's all very well

(19:08):
to get thirty points put here in the first half
of a competition, but when mounts up, thirty six points
get put on you in the second half and you
can only respond with the one try? Does that deflate
you as a fan immensely? Do you feel like a
balloon that's farting around the room? And I wonder if

(19:32):
the players feel like that. We had that meltdown against
the Melbourne Storm after getting ahead very very well. Is
it fair for me to question the mental strength of
this group of players. I know players don't like to

(19:54):
be criticized, and I get that they take their job.
I'm sore seriously, and they're very proud. But even if
the Titans played one of the best game the season,
and even if, as Steve Price pointed out, sometimes other
teams don't let you do what you want to do,

(20:15):
the description yesterday, the lack of players wanting to put
their shoulders through the opposition that was from all Black
coach Scott Robertson. It summarized it, didn't it? So taking
that into account and look again, Andrew Webster has been
a very good coach. He's worked with these team for
a year and a half now and they's got some

(20:35):
very good results. But what's happened over the last year
or the last season and the way things are leaking
away from the Warriors, would you have an expectation that
may be considering that the so called second stringers came
on board and actually had some gutsy wins over some

(20:56):
much more promising or better opposition. Are you surprised our
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty that a sense that
stayed the same, And on that saying, do you believe
that there's enough internal strength and spine within this side?
And I want to talk about the coaching stuff. I'm
talking about the players. Was they're the ones who did this?

(21:17):
It wasn't the coaches, and as Agar said yesterday, could
tell in five minutes that they weren't there give enough
faith in them to actually have the pride in the
jersey and the rage in themselves what they did to
actually hop aboard the Broncos and smash them. Bro oh.
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open Surfing

(21:42):
with Billy Stamman. Toward the end of the program, text
nineteen ninety two, this is News Talks, eb Yellow.

Speaker 1 (21:54):
Forget the riff's call. You make a call on eight
Sports Talk on your home of Sports News Talks, be.

Speaker 4 (22:05):
Works you shrug bag.

Speaker 7 (22:08):
Didn't you put through my diner?

Speaker 9 (22:10):
It's fun enough world, and there's a way and I'm
I'm sure you're last.

Speaker 8 (22:18):
Segaba.

Speaker 6 (22:19):
Just wish Samuel Castle.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Was the list twenty nine to eight Sports or Care
on News Talks ab Surfing with a Billy Stammon, two
time Olympian in the sea. He joins us to talk
about moving forward toward the Paris Olympics where they'll be
surfing in Tahiti. Hey, it's French enough and it's quite
the left hand break. We'll talk to Billy about that.

(22:41):
And this new surf park, this wave park that's been
given resource consent just up north of Auckland. Wonderful, a
great news story for sport. One hundred eighty ten eighty
your faith in these players, these players who have been
left in the positions though in after what was a

(23:02):
terrible performance against the Titans, there be a lot of
fans that's again a cutle, some flack leading them alone.
But let's what remember what happened the week before, got
off to a great start and then fell apart again.
So we're looking at three consecutive halves and maybe a
bit more where this Warriors team just didn't put any

(23:23):
effort in. Do you have faith that this time around
these players will actually look back at the last couple
of weeks ago. We need to show more pride in
this jersey.

Speaker 8 (23:35):
It is the.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Veterans round next week. Steve Price is coming over. Steve
Price is going to be here for it, and maybe
that might put some more steel in them. Twelve line
breaks to one, forty five tackle breaks to twenty four

(23:58):
of bits twice. But that's extraordinary. God a Phil, How
I it.

Speaker 3 (24:08):
Mate?

Speaker 6 (24:09):
Not too bad?

Speaker 9 (24:09):
How are you?

Speaker 8 (24:10):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (24:10):
You know, I'm not not bad tempered or foul mouths
or horrid or anything. I just keep scratching my head
and going this, this doesn't seem like a team that
you played one half of football terribly. The second half,
nothing much changes. Are they even.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Listening to the coaches?

Speaker 2 (24:26):
But their pride? And how did they get reselected? I
get it, But tell me Phil what you think.

Speaker 10 (24:36):
First of all, I just want to make sure I
got I got it right, Darcy, isn't it?

Speaker 2 (24:39):
That's correct?

Speaker 10 (24:41):
Thank you? Because you were very tolerant for me one time,
and I thought I was talking to Pointy, you great mate, Pointy,
and I was calling your pointing, but you didn't say
none of that.

Speaker 2 (24:50):
Piney is extraordinarily tolerant. I'll give you that.

Speaker 9 (24:53):
I like to be.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
I try to be.

Speaker 10 (24:55):
Yeah, No, I'm like you, mate. I was just scratching
my head and I watched the first part of the game.
I was delayed, but you know, so I I watched
it back of it and then I thought about ten
minutes to go, you know, I'll flick over live and
I had to put my glasses on. I couldn't believe

(25:16):
my eyes. It was sixty to six.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Yeah, sixty six six. That's not a great mark if
you're a religious human.

Speaker 10 (25:29):
Yeah, I was thinking that too. As God Ironica. They
ended up if you put the three numbers together, sixty
sixty six the number of the beast of your talking religion.

Speaker 3 (25:37):
But I.

Speaker 10 (25:39):
I don't. I would have to admit I don't have
the faith that they're be about to do it. I
personally don't think they have the mental fortitude and tenacity
and are strong enough. But I wouldn't. I wouldn't be
surprised because from day one, this is what the Warriors
had done. What you wouldn't want to be a betty, mean,

(26:00):
you'd lose your shirt on them because you just don't
know what they're going to do, you know. So they
come out and get absolutely hammered by a lower team
and the bottom team in this case, and then the
next week they'll come out and beat the top team,
you know, and you're just pulling your hair out going what.
But I'm not surprised that Andrew the coach has stuck

(26:21):
with the players, same players, because I think he's that
sort of coach and that sort of man that he'll
keep the faith in them and show you know that
he's behind them, wants to support them, even though I
think I think you know, when you look at the
three games that they won, and a lot of the
experienced players were out or injured or for whatever reason,
and the young guys were brought in. They stood up

(26:42):
and they had the hunger and the desire and showed
that they wanted to wear the jersey, be there for
the club, you know, improved themselves and say that, hey,
we're good enough to play with the top team here.
So yeah, I don't know. I don't know what he'll do.
But and the other thing that I wanted to say
to is like I feel a bit sorry for Shawn

(27:03):
Johnson even though I don't think he's playing his best.
He's carrying that injury and he's going to rest now,
you know, and he was trying to get through on it,
you know, because like like the coach said, you know,
when he was when they were questioned about Shawn Johnson's performance.
Now it's like, well did you watch the rest of
the players who missed the tackles and drop the drop

(27:24):
the passes.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
He seems a light world, doesn't he. Things don't go well.
People point to the playmaker and the superstar and go, yeah,
what were you doing? But Maden Finola Blake can hardly
stand there with pride and say look at me and
lot what I did.

Speaker 10 (27:39):
Yeah that's right, because if I remember right there we
go half as half as so I slipped through him
and he just ran through him, you know, and he
So it was just.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
Attitude, Phil, That's what's all about. Do they have the attitude,
do they have the want? Do they have the desire?
And after halfway through they were getting elect you'd think
they would do something to try and come back with
the Gold Coast really that good? I mean they played
a good brand of football. Were they that good?

Speaker 8 (28:09):
No?

Speaker 10 (28:09):
I don't think they were that good as they were
made to look, because you know, the Warriors were just
so pissed all in their tackling and their ball handling
and that. But I think they were good because one
of the things I think that is also a problem
with the Warriors and teams are onto it, is their
attack is very predictable. You know, there's not a lot

(28:32):
of individual flair or running different lines. It's quite a
predictable sort of attack, you know, with Sewan putting up
the kick quite often. So I think teams are onto
that and they can read them, they can read their
attack or have a fairly good idea what they're going
to do. Whereas I think where the Gold Coast were
really good was they did have some individual players that

(28:54):
made the breakthroughs and that rather than maybe pre practiced
if you I mean.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Maybe with the Tomodi Martin that who's much more of
a running high. We'll see in improvement there possibly where
people talk about how predictable Johnson is with those kecks
to the corner, those high kecks to the corner every
now and then, it's not and that takes people by surprise,
and it's contestable ball. I get that. I think that

(29:24):
as rest is good. If he's not mentally and physically
one hundred percent, let someone else have a crack. But
you just think that when the less experienced guys showed
up and played those games, when some of the seniors
weren't there, that that would have maybe it would have
woken up to a degree to hold on. This is

(29:44):
not what I am.

Speaker 3 (29:45):
This is not what I do.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Anyway, Phil, Thanks very much for your call. Oh eight
hundred eighty ten eighty, where's yours? Your faith in the
bounce backability, it's not even a word. It's made it
up that it's broadcasting for you with this with this
WA's team, I suggest if it happens again this week,
that it'll have no choice but to go. You know
what I got. You can't clear the decks completely. It

(30:10):
just hasn't got enough players that you feel crime and punishment.
There is no punishment, not that that was against the
law what they did, but it was vaguely criminal getting
beaten sixty six.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
Wasn't It wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Don't want to get the sense as well. But maybe
the bandwagon is people are falling off. It quite possibly
is derailed and people are going to it's just the Warriors.
They've gone back to type again, which is a real
shame because they had such traction. Anyway, give us a
ring while I've got a couple of seconds while this

(30:50):
music winds down. Shawn Janson interesting social media post. If
you're one of those who find comfort and slamming others online,
I hope everything is okay. Your words don't carry weight
this time around that they could for the next, and
you choose to spew your negativity on think before your type.

(31:12):
On the other hand, those who have checked in or
seen a message, I appreciate you. Perspective is key. I'm
at a stage where eighty minutes doesn't define me like
it once did. I still get to live a pretty
good life for the best people in it. Short Ball
Johnson won't be on the field for a bit. I'm frustrated,
but I'll be doing everything I can to get back
to the level and I know I can. That's a
great response, isn't it from online trolling?

Speaker 3 (31:34):
Don't you think.

Speaker 2 (31:36):
Would the best response be saying nothing? It's twenty eight
minutes to eight. This is News Talks at be Couch
Billy Stamm and second time surfing Olympian for New Celling. Billy,

(31:57):
welcome to the program. Gee, second time round. Give you
a veteran broach. The have all under control.

Speaker 9 (32:03):
Yeah, it's pretty exciting and it's pretty surround being two
times Olympian now obviously heading into Paris. It's a little
bit different to the first games we did in Tokyo,
the COVID Games as they call it.

Speaker 6 (32:13):
So nah, it's it's very exciting and yeah, good times ahead.

Speaker 2 (32:17):
You're not really going to Paris though, are you, Billy.
It's thousands of miles away from Paris.

Speaker 9 (32:21):
Yeah, so obviously it's the Paris Olympic Games, but the
surfing is actually in Tahiti at a wave called Chopu,
which is, you know, on the other side of the world.

Speaker 6 (32:31):
From Paris, So yeah, it's going to be interesting.

Speaker 2 (32:33):
Chapoho one of the craziest waves in the world. Only
discovered what mid eighties, I think it was. What makes
this wave so special, Billy.

Speaker 9 (32:42):
Yeah, it's it's I believe it's one of the most
scary waves on the planet. A lot of top surfers
go there and they get the best waves of their lives.
It's a very it's like it's a bit of a
spectrum over there, you know, it's it comes from the
wave itself comes from a lot of deep water. There's
a really deep trench out the back of Chopu there,
and you know, the swales come from far away and
build momentum and power and energy and then they come

(33:04):
on to break on this really shallow, sharp, intense reef.
So there's a lot of water involved in the wave.
And you know, the wave itself is actually quite short.
You know, it's a short and tense, big scary wave,
and there's you know, there's a lot going on out
there in the lineup. You've got the boats in the channel,
you've got the dry reef, you've got the you know,
the big scary waves, and then you've also got to

(33:24):
you know, compete against the best in the world while
the whole world's watching. So there's a lot going on
out there at Chopu. But I'm looking forward to the
challenge ahead and it's something I've never really done before.
So yeah, I've been working hard towards that goal of
obviously meddling at the Olympic Games, but just being there
a part of history, I guess.

Speaker 2 (33:40):
First team to experience. Billy, what have you got on
that monster wave?

Speaker 6 (33:44):
Yeah, I've been a bit of time, you know, since
I qualified.

Speaker 9 (33:47):
I actually did a i say training camp there last
year for the first time, so we you know, there
was a few athletes from the World Surfing Games that
got to go along to this camp that they put
on for us, and we had a coach there from Tahiti.
His name is Today Ever, and you know, we got
to learn a lot about the break and positioning and
the waves and boards and things like that. So ever

(34:10):
since then, and ever since I qualified last year, I've
made a conscious effort to get to Tahiti and spend
time in the lineup and become a bit more normal
with my surroundings and a bit more comfortable with the
wave itself, and just you know, being over there a
part of that intense scenario, I guess. So, yeah, I
actually just got back last week from a training trip

(34:32):
over there, got all sorts of conditions, which was awesome.
You know, I got to learn a lot more and
spend some time and those surroundings, and yeah, I'm becoming
more and more comfortable every trip. And I think come
games time, I'll be you know, hopefully we'll get some
good waves and I'll be able to charge and put
my best foot forward and you know, give it my
best What is your best foot My best foot forward

(34:52):
is my left one on a natural footer. But now
the goal for me is obviously to meddle. And I
think at a wave like Chopu, anything could happen out there.
You know, a wave could pop up for me, the
best wave could pop up for me, and I could
get the best back in that heat and beat the
best guys in the world.

Speaker 8 (35:09):
You know.

Speaker 9 (35:09):
So there's a lot of opportunity out there at Chopu,
and I think it's more likely or you know, there's
more of an opportunity than most beach breaks and other
waves around the world to actually get a bit of
momentum in the competition and beat those guys. So yeah,
I'm really looking forward to it. I'm you know, I'm confident,
I'm comfortable, I'm fit and healthy, and I'm ready to
go for the Olympics.

Speaker 2 (35:29):
It's a left hand break, Billy, so more advantageous to
the goofy writers sort of that not and not affect
you so much.

Speaker 9 (35:35):
Well, growing up in Raglan, I'm actually basically born and
bred on a left hand brake. Obviously a little bit different.
It's a long left hand point break, but I go
left every single day ever since I started surfing, so
for me, going left is probably preferable. So yeah, it's
a little bit different with the conditions and the surf,
but you know, it could be not big and pumping,

(35:56):
it could be small and like Raglan. So you've got
to prepare as much as you can for all conditions,
and you know it's always changing and it can change
so quickly over there, especially in like five ten minutes.

Speaker 6 (36:06):
It could be big and onshore or could be small
and offshore.

Speaker 9 (36:09):
So yeah, I believe I can middle and you know,
I've put on some time over there and a lot
of time in the gym and getting fit and healthy
mentally as well.

Speaker 6 (36:17):
And yeah, I'm really excited. I can't wait.

Speaker 9 (36:19):
We leave in three weeks and we've got a week
of training days and you know, exploring over there and
getting ready for the competition.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
It's not really the wave that's scary, though, is it all?
Possibly it's the reef underneath it. Get dump it's cheese
greater action, Billy.

Speaker 9 (36:33):
Yes, it is very dangerous. The reef itself is real sharp,
like it's live coral. A lot of the you know,
or not a lot, but heaps of the breaks around
the world they not as sharp as the one in Tahiti.

Speaker 6 (36:43):
It's very healthy and clean, and you know there's coral
heads all over that reef.

Speaker 9 (36:47):
So yeah, the wave itself is definitely intimidating, but what's
below and what could happen, you know, if you don't
make the drop or you don't make the barrel is
quite scary in itself. And again you've got to prepare
the best you can. And I've hit the reef over
there before. And I just had a trip over there,
you know, last weekend, and three foot pretty small, and

(37:07):
I got a little wave and didn't make the barrel
and I hit the reef. I got pinned down, almost
got a two wave hold down and it was quite scary.
But you come up and you know you're okay, and
there's gonna be a lot of water safety and you
know a lot of We're going to have a doctor
there and people that can look after us and make
us feel more comfortable over there.

Speaker 6 (37:24):
So yeah, there's a lot going on.

Speaker 9 (37:26):
But at the same time, yeah, I'm super excited and
can't wait to put that rash it on and represent
New Zealand and the biggest stage sporting stage.

Speaker 2 (37:33):
No my popcorn, and they're ready to watch that, no doubt.

Speaker 10 (37:36):
Hey.

Speaker 2 (37:36):
Moving on to other huge news and surfing. A massive
surf park is being introduced. It's got resource consent up
in Dairy Flat. This is going to be huge not
only for the surfers but for the local tourist industry
and everything else.

Speaker 6 (37:49):
Yeah, yeah, it's very exciting.

Speaker 9 (37:52):
I spent the last couple of days with the boys
at Aventur and a couple of good surf friends who
are involved in the in the wave park up there,
and they got some good news about getting some consent
and the go ahead to start the procedure of building
a pool in north of Work in there, So yeah,
I think it's it's massive for not only the development
of surfing and the next generation of competitive surfers, but

(38:13):
all around surfing. You know, you're going to have the
dads or the mums that are keen to start surfing,
or you know, the older generation who haven't really given
it a proper crack. They'll have that safe environment and
that repetition and those waves that come every day and
to practice, you know, and learn and become a better
surfer and a matter of probably an hour.

Speaker 6 (38:32):
So it's very exciting.

Speaker 9 (38:33):
And you know, I'm getting older in the surf surf
competition side of things, so it's very exciting for me
and it could be a good pathway for me to
get into some coaching side of things and become a
part of the development of high performance you know, surfing
in New Zealand.

Speaker 6 (38:50):
And yeah, I think it's going to open up a lot.

Speaker 9 (38:52):
Of opportunities for a lot of people, jobs and the
community up there, not only for New Zealand as well,
but Auckland and international.

Speaker 6 (39:00):
Like you say, so, yeah, it's an exciting road ahead.

Speaker 1 (39:04):
Hearing from the biggest names, what man have your say
on eighty Sports Talk More on your home of sports
News Talks.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
It be at nine minutes to eight. I'll give you
some more information about this surf park shortly. There are
some crazy numbers around the proposed park. Maybe I shouldn't
get overly excited. Sounds like it's going it's got resource consent,

(39:34):
somebody else is paying for it. Shortly, I'll let you
know some numbers around what is going to be a
wonderful addition to the Auckland region. Not that you care,
but I could even get back in the water again
given that no it can tell I'm lying. The mouse

(39:58):
moving not in a million years. Eight minutes away from eight.
This is News Talks. There b small stalkcow on new
still CB text us is not a bloody midfielder. Change
is overrated. You still got rid of it. That's from Steve. Steve,
thanks for venting. Someone else wants me to cover Conkers.

(40:23):
I'm not quite sure if there's a conquers league. Maybe
if you go to the United States, who have an
eating league, there possibly could be a conquer's lead. Not
one hundred percent on that. This surf park six hundred
waves an hour, six hundred waves an hour, you book

(40:49):
an hour stretches, and if you're a learner, you're out
right at the very edge where basically there are breaking ways.
It's a bit calm, it's a bit cool. You don't
get wiped out, and they're closer you're going on the boom,
closer to the middle. The more aggressive the waves become.

(41:09):
And through software these waves can be managed. They can
actually put a barrel in there, and they've got medium ability,
they've got expertability, they've got the learners right out the back,
but they can cover every possibility and they can change

(41:29):
on a regular basis. So you book for an hour
whatever you want to do, and you're in six hundred
waves generated an hour with that crazy amount of water
being moved, and it's warm. There's a big solar panel
park thing right next door in a Spark data center,

(41:52):
and they're dragging all the power out of that as
well out of the sun. So not only are there
no sharks, no coral reefs, warm, four hundred jobs or
they're building it ready to go twenty six twenty seven,
late twenty six early twenty seven, one hundred and twenty
full time jobs when it actually opens. They've got a

(42:15):
farm to table restaurant there too, an absolute destination. A
hundred million bucks ready for this, and not any of
it is out of your pockets. It's just people who
love the sport. I think it's going to be worth
six hundred million to Auckland's economy over the time. I

(42:39):
think over the initial ten years it might be. I'm
very excited about this. I just think it's such a
positive in New Zealand sport infrastructure that we just don't
hear about. So congratulations to all of those involved. Well
done and some melicite Thanks for producing the program, Thanks
for listening, texting in that caller as well. Love your work.
