Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Here we go again, seven minutes out to seven. It's
Friday night, right fifteenth of November twenty twenty four from
Darcy Watergrave on from now through till eight o'clock tonight,
We're talking sport is the name of the program. After
all sports talk on the program. This sevening will bite

(00:53):
off the standard fair when it comes to sport in
New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Rugby and cricket.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
What more do you need? We'll take your calls OZ
one hundred and eighty ten eighty. You can text nineteen
nine two. That's a zebi zeb that will cost you
a standards text charge. Mind the phone call absolutely free.
Get a monkst Towards the end of the program half
an hour's time, a bit longer. Neil Wagner's kind of
join his wags. Of course, Tim Southy has hung up

(01:22):
his boots, not quite a bit nearly. He made the
announcement the day that I've been playing this game now
for five centuries and I'm really getting a bit tired.
I probably need to stop playing. But he's going to
have a last crack, the last three Test matches up
against England. Lovely balance right, he started his career against England.

(01:43):
He finished his career against England. Although there is an
asterisk around there and that says, what if we qualify
to the World Test Championship Final, maybe you can pick
me again. I might come back understandable, great career. We'll
talk about that with that. Neil Wagner, take a couple
of your calls in not as well after Wag's Joints

(02:03):
is coming up next though former All Black broadcaster as well,
I might add a mighty chief fine movelye. Stephen Bates
joins us as we take a look at the team
named for well, it's the penultimate test for the All
Blacks for the year.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
But I'd like to.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Say it's the final test because what are Italy? How
long can Italy be in the six Nations and still
be essentially completely flattered and ineffective?

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Extraordinary? It really is.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
I don't know what they pay to be in the
cod must be worth something, because they're pants that may
come back to bite me. I certainly hope it doesn't.
So we look toward France. The team was named overnight.
We'll talk to Stephen Bates about the naming of that team,
the tweaks, the changes to that team, like your opinion
on the strength of the team and the decisions that
you've made.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
But how key is this.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
In your evaluating of the start Scott Robertson's all black
coaching career.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Is the result here make or breakers? First year?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Just think about that. Call me afterwards. Last Stephen Bates
the same thing. Sure he'll let us know that's all
coming up shortly before we get near that, though, let's
get nice and close to this.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Sport today and in sport today.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Top three moments in the career of Tim Suvee from
the soon to be retired Tim Suvee. It's hard to
disagree with Tim sauve.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Really, the Test, Winnen and Hobart all those years ago,
Serious women, the West Indies UAE.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
What we just achieved in the last few weeks.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Was was was pretty much the top of the tree
with the World Teescht Championship. It's not so bad. It's
more than footwear or a jersey number of Ardie Savia.
It don's the seven jumper on Sunday when the Abs
take on the French.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Wouldn't say just slipping on old shoes, the little different
roles and little things that kind of have to get
used to happier. Like I'm just grateful to put on
the black jersey, whether that's six, seven, eight, eleven, thirteen.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Mean in the midfield, wouldn't he Maybe not the step
and the speed, But as far as defense goes ooh
All Whites coach Darren Baisley has most potential issues covered
ahead of tonight's World Cup qualifier versus Fanowatu.

Speaker 6 (04:29):
I don't think the players need too much reminding of
the importance of the game. But we'll definitely just go
through some of the challenges that we might come up against.
And we are the favorites, but that does bring different challenges,
but not one dog we're scared of.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, I wonder if you're scared of the challenge that's
clear and present right now. I think it's gotten better
that the pitch conditions FMG were atrocious. Apparently there was
a downpour of biblical proportions that what it had ducks.
There was like a turf paddling pool out there. I

(05:04):
think it's draining very, very fast and we should be
okay for the start of the game. At half past
seven because that was well, at worst dangerous. We will
see and I'll keep you up to date with that
game when it kicks off in just over fifteen minutes time.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
And that's sport today.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Time to talk All Black rugby and we're joined now
by a former All Black fine Mulu Man chief and
broadcasters Steven Bates. Stephen, welcome to the show. Great to
have you on board.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
I trust you well yeah, no, very well mate, and
thanks for the introduction.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
No, my the pleasure is mine.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Thanks for joining us, Stephen. The team is out.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
This is basically look, it's an ultimate test of the
season because we've got the Italians coming up, but probably
should win that, but this really is going to put
an exclamation mark on the season so far. They win this,
you could look to the season and say Robertson's been
successful here.

Speaker 7 (06:01):
And you also say you also say shivers. Haven't they built? Well,
haven't they? Yes, we had a up against we had
a hiccup against Argentina South Africa, South Africa and they're
always tough, you know, but jeep as we're starting to
find our mojo, aren't we. That's for sure. So that's
what you can say. If they win this Test match
against the French. Obviously they've got to tick off the

(06:23):
Italians as well, but you can certainly have that train of.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
Thought if you win. If you don't win, then all
of a sudden you're thinking, O, hod on a second,
are we on the right track? That's our fourth loss.

Speaker 7 (06:34):
So yeah, there's a bit like the sort of battle
of a mind. There's a bit riding on this one.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
On the weekend two weeks ago, if you had have
said they're looking like wiping the floor with the European tour,
people would have gone on, I don't know about that.
I'm not sure, but it's tracking so well, what's the
major improvement. What have you seen from a coaching therefore
playing perspective over the last two weeks, The way this
team has developed and grown, Stephen.

Speaker 7 (07:02):
I think, and I will certainly say this, and I've
said this, I think did help us. The Irish were
a little bit rusty last week. I think that's fair.
But what I really enjoyed about last week is that
once we did get on top of them, we didn't
try and invent stuff that wasn't working, and that didn't
get us to that position of power in the game.

(07:22):
We just continued on doing what was working with us.
We just stuck to what looked like was the blueprint
for the game, rather than going, oh, we're up by
ten points, now let's start running it from our own goal.
They just stuck to what they did. And that's any team,
you know what I mean, something that as a coach
should you'd be rapped with your team can just stick

(07:43):
to what they're obviously trying to do.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, And importantly when the subs came on, they carried
on of like and we know what troubles this team
has had in the last twenty minutes and fixed you
the last half of recent times. So they're falling into
a groove. They understand the roles. Now understand the continuation
of these roles.

Speaker 7 (08:05):
Stephen And if you look at we look forward to
this French gaming and I'm a little bit biased, but
certainly I think Paddy.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
Toy Plow two has been outstanding on the bench, and
there's others as well.

Speaker 7 (08:16):
Offer has been very good as well, but Paddy gives
us a little bit of a point of difference from
the two locks that are on the field. And you
look at if you look at this game that's coming
up on the weekend. The all works are vastly more
experienced than the French, especially when you look at the bench. Now,
I don't have the numbers in front of me to say, oh,

(08:36):
this is how many cats they've gotten this, but I've
had had a look at it, and there's a lot
more experience on our bench then there is the French bench. Obviously,
experiences is a little bit sometimes can be a little
bit like, oh, we're the favorites. It doesn't mean, it
doesn't mean for a lot. But then when you're in
a real tight game, those guys like Paddykoffer, like other guys,

(08:57):
you know they've been there once or twice before.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
You make the team that got released early this morning.
A shuffle and the loose four wards are understandable. The
continuation of the front row and the tweaks between nine
and ten first with the loose forward trio a bit
of a twist there.

Speaker 7 (09:16):
You're happy enough, Yeah, And I've said it plenty of times.
I really hope, out of out of everyone, I hope
Semi Penny finale goes really well. I think I'm a
fan and and I think he's the kind of player
that we need in the all blacks.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
If you look at our loose fortune. I know I
won't go through and name them.

Speaker 7 (09:36):
But you name them all, even the guys that are
back here in New Zealand. You look at the size
of them there, they're sort of somewhere between six foot
to six two, maybe six three. Then you've got semi
Penny for now, who's just that little bit bigger, plays
slightly different to how they play, So there was sort
of an obvious choice when you when you look at
how they've how they've structured it.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
But I really hope he goes well for them. The
nine and ten on wrap.

Speaker 7 (10:02):
That that Cortez has retained his place. He hasn't retained
his place in the starting liner, but he's retained his
place in the team because and I don't think it's
I don't think it's his fault, but he came under
a little bit of heat after that last game. He
didn't get looked after very well. It's no one's fault.
It just happened. And I think the worst thing that

(10:23):
we could have done has thrown him out because I
think that I think that he's got a lot to
offer and he'll be good off the bench for us.

Speaker 4 (10:30):
On the weekend and.

Speaker 7 (10:32):
Regard you know, he's the kind of guy that he's
almost almost come from nowhere over the last eighteen months.
And this is a wonderful opportunity against you know, we say,
we say, possibly the world's best player, definitely the world's
best nine and probably the world's best player on the other.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Side, which brings me back to the loose forwards again,
because they are going to need to do a lot
of work to deal with to pond, do you like
Satiki coming in at eight eighty SV, Well, he can
play anywhere, can't he? So at seven we're not lacking anything,
but they've got a lot on them. They've got to
worry about their opposition. Lucy's do Pont trouble at mill Yeah?

Speaker 4 (11:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (11:09):
Also, and and the thing is too, Yes, there are
loose forwards. He'll trouble loose forwards. But what he will
do is he'll trouble those guys around the ruck and
traditionally that's your your front row, your locks, your tight forwards,
because the French will play a game where they roll
their forwards around the corner. It's not just straight one off,

(11:32):
one off, But then what happens they get a little
bit of GameLine. And then you've got the pont who
starts sniping. And the problem with that is all half
back snipe. You understand that, Like what's new about that?
The problem is this follow when he snipes Jeeves Man,
he can he can throw a front rower.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
Off, you know what I mean.

Speaker 7 (11:47):
So it's not like you've got a guy who's seventy
kg's dripping wet and no power, who's who's sniping around
the edge. And that's where that and his box kick
will be will be two areas where the pont will
potentially cause us a bit of issues.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
Stephen Bates, Boden Barrett climbs back. And again I don't
think it's a slight on Damien McKenzie. I think it's
a pretty pragmatic move. Did you see it differently?

Speaker 7 (12:14):
No, I don't mind it, to be honest with you,
I don't mind like obviously, And I look at from
a little bit from a players point of view. Always
as a player, I think, and it's a funny way
to look at it, but as a player, you'd rather.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Be and I don't like the word, but you'd rather.

Speaker 7 (12:26):
Be dropped, you know. And then I say that in
a funny sort of way. But you'd rather be dropped
after playing a really good game than dropped after playing
a not so good game. And the other thing, I
thought Boden had good control against the English. That's not
to say Damien didn't against the Irish, but if you
do look at the way the French play a little bit,

(12:47):
I am expecting and I hope I'm correct, because the
game against the Irish wasn't exactly three flowing. I expect
this game to open up a little bit more and
then we've got Damien coming on and there's not There's
not too many guys in world rugby that that do
open field play better than Damian McKenzie.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Especially when you got a guy like Will Jordan sniffing
around as well. And how much fun does it have
him in the fifteen jersey where he belongs. He's showing
now this is where I'm comfortable. Could you please let
me there? Even though the opportunity maybe wasn't there so
much last week when he did have a snipe, it
was there and ready to go.

Speaker 7 (13:27):
Yeah, and again, like you talk about last week, there
wasn't the.

Speaker 4 (13:30):
Opportunity it was.

Speaker 7 (13:32):
It was a good game because it was tight and
there was a contest, but it wasn't an open game,
you know, so We'll probably didn't have those opportunities. But
and I'm going to double down on what I've said,
I'm hoping for two reasons, Like, at the end of
the day, we want a contest.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
We want to enjoy.

Speaker 7 (13:47):
That's one reason why we enjoy watching sport and we
enjoy watching rugby.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
But the other reason is we want a.

Speaker 7 (13:52):
Game that's quite open, and hopefully Will gets that opportunity
this weekend and he goes well and we get a
bit of a spectacle as fans, because no, that's what
we want to see as sports fans.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I'm going to theory around the pressure put on the
Irish team by themselves and by the crowd last week. Look,
the All Blacks played very well and the Iris let
them do so with the mistakes. But they keep getting
beaten by the All Blacks in the big games, in
the World Cup games, and they are at home where

(14:25):
they haven't been beaten, and they are a bit rusty.
I just don't think they could handle the weight of that.
I don't know if the French have that same thought process.
I think they play with a bit more freedom and
don't really worry too much about what the crowd want
and what the previous results are. They're here and now,
aren't they.

Speaker 4 (14:44):
Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 7 (14:45):
I think you did right and yeah, and I don't
want to harp on about it, but the Irish weren't
at their best last week. But I think you're right
on that. I think the French they will play what's
in front of them. But in saying that, in saying that,
they actually do have a really structured, a really structured game,

(15:05):
you know. So, yes, they play a three flowing game,
but their game is quite structured and it's on the
back of a lot of kicking.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
It is on a lot of a lot of kicking.

Speaker 7 (15:16):
So let's not get confused and think the French, this
team that attacked from absolutely everywhere.

Speaker 4 (15:23):
They're a team that builds their game off.

Speaker 7 (15:26):
The back of their kicking game and depots one of
those guys. They kick more than any other Tier one nation,
and that's after you make a mistake in your kicking game,
either you run back when you shouldn't have because you've
got bored, or you kick the ball.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Out on the full.

Speaker 7 (15:43):
That's when they're flair and that's when they'll punish you
or anything.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
At least in Clark and Jordan, we've got guys who
are pretty sound under the high ball and looking forward
to that competition.

Speaker 7 (15:54):
Uh yeah, yeah, definitely they will, you know they will,
and they can't. They can't get bought. They can't get
bored of it, because that's what the French want. And
you look at the Irish and we won that battle
last week of here.

Speaker 4 (16:07):
The Irish put a.

Speaker 7 (16:08):
Lot of balls up high. The French will put a
lot of balls long. And that's that's one of the
Pont's real strengths. As you look at his box cack.
Yes he can kick those high, contestable box cacks, but
he also takes a step or two back towards his
own try line and then kicks long.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
So just can't get bored there.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
And one last thing, Stephen Matson, thanks so much for
joining us. Is it too much to say that the
game this weekend will define Scott Robertson's opening season as
the All Black coach.

Speaker 4 (16:43):
I think that's fair.

Speaker 7 (16:44):
Like, as we said right at the very start, if
he wins us, and I'll be honest, I thought over
these three games, I thought the score to the I
thought the score would be two to one.

Speaker 4 (16:54):
That I'm won't sure if.

Speaker 7 (16:56):
They'd win two and and lose one or lose to
and win one. But if they go three and oh,
as we said right at the start, then we look
at the losses of the early part of the season.

Speaker 4 (17:07):
Okay, oh, a new regime.

Speaker 7 (17:08):
They were, they were finding their feet and now what
they've gone.

Speaker 4 (17:11):
They've gone and they've gone and.

Speaker 7 (17:13):
Beaten three really good sides. Hey mate, what a good
first up campaign, what a first up year for this
Scott Robinson coached All Black side. And if they don't,
if they don't went on Saturday, they're still you know,
a couple of question marks.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
But I certainly think with a victory.

Speaker 7 (17:32):
Cheap as they can certainly be happy with the year.

Speaker 2 (17:35):
At four dollars fifty overs, I'm getting a bit of that.
Stephen Bates, thanks so much for joining us here on
News Talk ZB. Real pleasure, you enjoy your weekend.

Speaker 4 (17:43):
Thank to you. Not a problem, does he?

Speaker 1 (17:45):
The right call is your call on eight hundred eighty
Sports Talk call on your home of Sports News Talk.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
ZBB from All Black Stephen Baits also punted. Now you'll
find them on Breakdown having a crack at some of
the boys up there already great to have them on board.
So this the team has been named. There could be
debating points around the positions. They're possibly hard to debate them.

(18:12):
It seemed fairly pragmatic to me the decisions that were
made by Scott Robertson, as mentioned before him. I'm fascinated
by this degreat story. I don't think what he did
was particularly offensive. He didn't get sent home, didn't get arrested,

(18:33):
he just got dropped, right, But what a shot over
the bows of all the other all blacks and potential
all blacks.

Speaker 3 (18:41):
If you get punished.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
For doing something wrong, you might not get your way
back into the side again.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
It's not a given.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
So I'm sure Scott Robertson didn't mean that by not
picking Ethan again.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
But he's feeling the.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Effects of whatever he did. I expect to get a
roll on up against Italy, but it's pretty brutal. It's
all about controlling narrative. Don't misbehave and you don't have
to suffer the consequences. But that's that's the one side.
The team itself. But looks good, looks sensible, looks like
a team that could take on and overtake the French.

Speaker 3 (19:21):
We will see bigger question for.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Me and for you on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
Feel free to call through an engage or he can
text nine two nine two z'd be ze beast A
text judge does apply it for that. How important is
this test match result?

Speaker 3 (19:36):
For Scott robertson.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Your thoughts only schools a thought around this. If you're
being kind of passive and in the middle of your
it doesn't matter, he said an okay, yeah, now isn't
one of more has been up, been a bit down,
looks like he's getting a bit better and the team
seems to be falling into place. And it's only the
first year and for your World Cups like it doesn't
really matter.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
I will not lose.

Speaker 4 (19:58):
Who cares?

Speaker 2 (20:01):
You could be of the opinion you were going so well,
the team was lifting, and why you actually drop your
bundle up against the friends at home when you had
the perfect opportunity to maybe stand there and go the
all Blacks are back. There's two ways to look at it.

(20:23):
Third way they lose all win the game regardless I mentioned.
That's first way they winder is a game and it
does actually affect your opinion on what Scott Robinson has done,
and it does make the season an absolute success. It's
hard to argue that one win at the end of
this season makes it an absolute success. I'm still only

(20:47):
run about eighty percent for an all Black teams.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
Con Is that good enough? I don't know if it is.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
So give me your thoughts on the gravity of this
match up against France, the import of this match against
France when it comes to judgment day, all that sounded
sinister around Scott Robinson and what he's done as an
all coach.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
Do you look purely at that result or do you.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Look at the way he's molded this team? And this
team is slowly becoming more Scott Robertson's team than an
inherited team from n Foster. He's actually starting to mold
it in his own vision. Let me know your thoughts. Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open. Apparently
adis Avia played his last couple.

Speaker 3 (21:29):
Of years at school.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
It's center very successfully.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
Don't roll it out.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
I'd say he's a bit bigger than he was then.
Maybe he's a bit non oesque now, maybe he'd be
outstanding there who knows. And a question here is are
you going to talk about the Jake Paul Mike Tyson fight. Look,
if you want to talk about it, by all means,
rang up and let me know. But let's just be
perfectly honest about this. I'll watch it because he was

(21:52):
a hero of mine when I was a young man
watching boxing, right, I love to see him back. And
there's black shorts and black boots on again. They're wearing
fourteen ounce gloves and there are eight two minutes round.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
This is not a fight. This is silly, right, silly.
They should have little.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Red noses and big comedy size eighteen boots when they're
out there. It's not a fight, Dan, this is news talk,
b lines open, it is how past seven.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
You don't need for the TMO. We've got the breakdowns
on sports talk. Calla news talk simp.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Yeah, that's it. I should run that at Parliament right
before they start. And this is a no way, shape
or form comment on the behavior of either side of
the house right either side, it's just the house in general.

(23:02):
I've always found it to be quite a comedic place.
I know, Rob moll done falling out, half cut and
announcing a snap election. That was pretty clown like in discipline.
Enough already, this is a sports show. Seven thirty two
O eight hundred and eighty ten eighty the lines are open.
What does it mean the result of this game? What

(23:22):
does it say to you about what Razor Robertson has done?
They win, does that increase your opinion? Does that rise
raise your opinion of Raiser Robertson? If they lose, is
he crashed down?

Speaker 4 (23:37):
What?

Speaker 3 (23:37):
Does it just make no difference.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
I think we all want to see the same thing.
We'd like to see a win. We would like to
see a game where the All Blacks make few mistakes
in the opposition, a game where they have control of
the narrative of the fixture, a game where they score

(24:00):
in the last half, in the last twenty minutes, game
where no one gets sent off. Yeah, I want them
to win because you know four was fifty to win thirteen.
It's not not a not a bad bet. But to me,
I don't think it'll color until it happens what Scott
Robertson has done so far this year. Because the naysayers

(24:24):
can say, well, you know, I remember no good. You
know they laid down they fell over. I'm still convinced,
as I was saying before to Stephen Bates, that the
Irish did that to themselves. It was pretty simple for
New Zealand to carry on because the Irish were crushed
under the weight of their own expectation and the All
Blacks dominated and pushed that squeezed it on them and

(24:47):
they fell apart. Don't know, I have it against the French.
English is a very close run thing on balance, win
or lose. I know you want to see, but I'm
not quite sure what that says about the entire season
under Scott robertson What does it say to you?

Speaker 3 (25:08):
Does it screen.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Anything in particular to you? Is it being successful or
has it been a failure regardless of what happens. That
might be a bit abstract. I'm not sure, but I'll
be interested in your thoughts on that. In the nature
of the team, I've read a few articles talking about
bold decisions and the like. All the changes made tonight, well,

(25:35):
don't see any of it has been particularly bold. I
seem it has been pretty sensible and pretty serious, and
I think that's what we've seen from Razor all year.
If anything, he's erred to the boring in the beige
more than anything else. Well, he sets the stall up
for the All Blacks, bringing Barrett and Cody Taylor back.

(25:57):
I'm always fantastic, great manful, powerful performance. We know how
good Cody Taylor is just a week off of the
back head. I don't think that is a bold call.
The same with Bowden Barrett. Out of the two of them,
he's the best first five. And we know how good
Damien is off the bench, and we hope he'd be
enthused by what he did last week. When he comes

(26:20):
off the bench, it will be from a place of joy.
You won't be better about that. I don't see there's
being bold decisions. I cam Reguard makes sense to me.
We saw a wee bit of pressure at the start
of the at the in their game last week, and
because he's maybe a bit rattled, didn't quite put it

(26:43):
in his best game. And I think we'll see a
lot more from Regard. So that's that's fine by me.
I don't think that's controversy or or bold by any
stretch the imagination. To me, it seems pretty straight up
and down, pretty pragmatic. The readjustment of the loose Ford

(27:07):
trail and why not. There's no Sam King, right, so
they push young Wallace, the Titi who's had a great
time of it, to where he wants to play, which
is number eight. We know Julian Savire play openside flanker.
It's been a few years, sure, but you know, chuck
them in there. What's the problem with that? It just

(27:27):
to me, It doesn't freak me out. I don't think
these are bold decisions. I think these are sensible decisions
and some of Benny Fenn now had a pretty poor
start to the season, looks to be coming right.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
Looks good to me.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
Seven thirty seven, This is sports Talk on News Talk ZB.
Let's run through a couple of texts. If we lose
to France, it's four losses and an all black season
that's amongst the worst ever. Okay, so that is a yes,
it's very important what happens here. Raiser holding players to

(28:02):
a standard.

Speaker 3 (28:02):
This is fantastic.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
Be a shock to the NCAA generation. Though possibly it is.
Maybe he's not holding him the standards. Just in case
you looked at it and the BF fact said, well,
you weren't there and the team played really well, so
stuff stay there. Tough Razers said when he was appointed
that after losing four of the best players in the world,

(28:26):
it would take him two or three years to get
the teams where he wants to get. France doesn't matter
to me as long as we play well.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
Nigel Razor is just picking the same players as Fozzy
and not getting any better results than he did. Northern
teams are green and poor, fairly uninspiring season. To be honest,
thank you for that. Don't blame the quality of the
players if they lose, blame the coach. What's easier to
blame the coach is only one guy, right, and Tyson

(28:56):
is looking an amazing shape. I think he'll win.

Speaker 3 (29:01):
Hmait.

Speaker 2 (29:03):
Last time he fought, didn't he get his betters from
some outside an unknown journeyman. I think he ran out
of paft totn't me so long ago? How do you
remember it? I was almost young then. What channels the
Fight on? Please Darcy? That's from Steve is on Netflix.

(29:23):
It does not pay per view Live Street. It's it's
on Netflix like some kind of entertainment, because that's all
it is. Coming up next on the program, Neil Wagner
joins us, we're going to talk about this soon to
be retired Tim Sudey in the effect he's had on
this game seventy forty two spots aw care on the

(29:52):
news talks eb and he said enough over after twelve
minutes in that World Cup qualifier. One's it and it
looks like the pictures dried out.

Speaker 3 (30:01):
Honestly, it was a paddling pool at.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
The game before crazy. Big new use of the today
of today coming out of the cricketing world is the
soon to be retirement of Tim soud the announcer today.
This English series will be his last series and he
will play a one off wuld Test Championship game if
they get that far, if they want him.

Speaker 3 (30:23):
And joined now by.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
Heil Wagner, whom stores got plenty of stories about him
away from the prying eyes of the media any of
time touring with him overseas in the country. You're not
going to tell us any of those tales, are you, Neil?

Speaker 8 (30:36):
And welcome to the show, Hi, Darcy, Thanks having me, mate. Yeah,
it's too many to share in some that I can't obviously,
but then he's been a huge store wards for the
team and obviously play the play the mass apart mate
through for the years it has been evolved. I mean,
he didn't start at a particular easy time when when

(30:59):
you know the team is building, you trying to find
your feet. But with him and Trent together obviously made
amidable opening for a number of years. Obviously in three formats,
and he'll be surely mosted some pretty big boots to format.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
It's an extraordinary difficult thing to be effective in three
different formats of the game at international level. But I
think it's even more difficult to stick around for what
seventeen eighteen years?

Speaker 3 (31:27):
What did he do that set him apart? Did you
notice in particular? Is he just lucky with his rig?

Speaker 8 (31:34):
Yeah, it's an incredible achievement to be honest, to play
all three forms and to do what he's done and
taking him out of wats he did, But I mean
it comes with no surprise. I think, you know, obviously
shows the skill he's got. You know, he's an extremely
talented player, I guess in a bowler. But the main
thing about Timmy he was always learning and always a
happening and always wanting to improve his game. There's no

(31:58):
challenge that he sort of you know, shied away from,
and I think it showed why he had the success
he's had in all three forms. He's been a huge
player for us, and I mean a lot of the
times you've had he's had to bowl and some pretty
tough conditions and sometimes the only I just frontline seemour
opening sort of bowler bowing over a new ball and
then having to do some pretty dirty work as well,

(32:21):
a lot of overs into the wind to make overable
defective as well. So yeah, he's the ultimate sort of
team man as well. I think it's been said a lot,
you know around from all the players lately who's played
a part or you know, retired. He's part of that
whole thing about team first and looking after you know
one another. But he's going to be missed off the field,

(32:42):
you know, the experience it brings us in the group,
and the banter, the fun. He's like a child, honestly,
you take them out anywhere. He's literally like the youth
and the change room, the amount of jokes and stuff
he brings, but the calmness it brings us and when
when precious situations had the experience and knowledge it brings
us in the group. He's going to be sorely missed

(33:04):
and he's going to leave a big hole in that team.
And and yeah, it's sad to see him go. I
feel like he's, you know, got some miles off on
their legs. But I mean that's just the nature of
a beast of how things go and the career short lived.
And yeah, he's had an amazing time of it, and
I hope he finishes on a real high and they can,
they can put thingland through normal what he should do.

Speaker 2 (33:25):
Because it's at home, the conditions suits him. He's had
a tough old time of it away and this is
I suppose set up for him to disappear. He's not
the kind of player that's going to take it easy,
is he. Though he's going to, he's going to really
want to leave with his head held high, so that
timing works well. He doesn't want to be pushed. He'd
rather walk away under his own steam.

Speaker 8 (33:47):
Yeah, definitely, And I think he'll The nice thing about
it is he knows he's got three tea spatches and
he'll empty the tank. I think he'll do whatever it
takes to run in and give it at all, even
you knowing obviously it's going to.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
Be his last.

Speaker 8 (33:58):
I think he's got the smarts that you know, he'll
do what he normally does, but I think there's just
that little bit of extra and so we'll come into
your into your run up and what you do, and
no doubt he want to just finish on a high
and and sorr he deserves. I hope that on public
gets around him and you know, the three testameters celebrate
what has been amazing his career from I know, probably

(34:22):
not done with the other formats that I know. I
haven't really heard much I guess around that, but hopefully
we'll still still see him around in some I guess
sort of capacity, having his experience and his knowledge around.
But hopefully the inelic public gets around him and support
him and yes in him off in a real good
way and in the manner that he deserves. For you know,

(34:42):
what he's done from his cricket thing been huge and outstanding.
So yeah, I look forward to watching him.

Speaker 2 (34:48):
What was it like when you were talking to Neil
Wagner about the scene to be retirement of Tim Southey.
What was he like to you as a player when
you debut when you started playing for the black Caps,
Because he'd be quite a powerful force. He's a big guy.
He's a successful guy, overwhelming personality. What was it like
when you first meet him and started playing an ex

(35:08):
same environment.

Speaker 8 (35:08):
Meal, Well, I had a lot of respect for to
me as soon as I got into you, I said,
I think, yeah, you know, he obviously had really close
mates and people that he grew up with playing h
group cricket to give us. So I think when I
first came on the scene, I wasn't really sort of
much liked or I guess one of his favorites. But yeah,
after getting to Naomi and a bit of time together,

(35:31):
we've had a lot of ups and downs together and
you know, friendship started brewing, and I think that trust
started happening. Knowing that we knew, you know, each other's roles,
and you know, with trenton the way we played, I
think we created quite a nice trio and complimented E
shove it quite nicely. But from the first tea match
I played, which Tim actually didn't play around the drinks

(35:52):
was twelfth man. He was very supportive. He was always
there try and help out and actually support you throughout it,
right up to the last But where by the time
had happened, which wasn't obviously an ideal scenario. He was
there to support you and trying to help and watch
away and that's just the nature of the lay timing
hows he wants to help out. He you know, he
really cares about the individuals and the team and you know,

(36:15):
giving and sharing his knowledge and experience. But also I
just balancing off ideas. A huge chunk of the wickets
that I got, you know, was was majorly a plan
that came together with me and him talking and discussing,
you know, a method all away and him giving his
input with with a change of field or a change
of plan or a little set up you are there.

(36:38):
You know, went a long way so till he has
been a huge drive beyond the scenes. And like I said,
you know, we celebrated and enjoyed a lot of moments
together on the field. And yeah, like I said, if
he surely mussed not just the experience and knowledge its
obviously on the field, but the person he is off
the field and what he is in the change room
that's really hard to replace. And yeah, he's been He's

(37:01):
been massive for this team. And yeah, wish him, wish
him all these majors.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
A couple of quick thing's Neil Wagon before we let
you go post cricket, is he more like you become
a coach or commentator? I don't know.

Speaker 8 (37:14):
I don't know how to we will go in the
commentating sort of role. It's amazing you can talk a lot.
You need to play shut him up. But I think
when you put the mic in one of them, he story,
you know, becomes a little bit more on the quiet
end and it doesn't talk too much. But I think
whatever he'll do, he'll do it in a really good
and I guess successful way and a professional way. Coaching

(37:35):
is something you know, he's got to extend amount of
knowledge and him, so you know, yeah, any anyone can
can lean, you know, towards him and try and pick
his brain. There'll definitely be the heaps of knowledge try
and pick into. But yeah, whatever he's going to do,
I know without a doubt that he'll make the success
of what he did the same as what he did
in all three forms he plays from his hylland and

(37:56):
obviously captaining a lot of that as well and leaving
the team to to some amazing success.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
And when does he rank for you, Neil in your look,
Because there's been some astonishing fast bowlers, including yourself, that
have played for New Zealand. Is it possible to put
them in a position any real nice Sir Richard Hadley
is the goats when it comes to he's yelling bowls
and they've got Trent Bolt very very close. But Sadi's
right up there.

Speaker 8 (38:23):
Yeah, I mean Hunter a series right up. These record
speaks for self and a second to none. I think
there was a comparison just recently, and I mean it
just shows again that it's hard to look at stats
because I saw something when James Anderson played the same
amount of games and what Timmy did in the same
amount of wickets. I think Timmy's average is better. I

(38:44):
think James Anderson's average as he sort of went on
and played more Test snatches took more wickets, He's average
dropped significantly. And that's just due to the fact that
we don't play as many games. I think Tim. You know,
you look at when Tim started his career and I
think he started the same time Joe Ruth and he's
played double the teat matches that that Tim has played.
So it's sort of hard to put all those sort

(39:06):
of in comparison because you know, we don't play in
the same conditions and things like that, so you've got
to take that in fact as well. And when he
started his career a lots of b and pieces. You know,
he didn't have the bowlers around him that they had
a success as well, So you look at what he
had to go through to be we as now he
had to go through a hell of a lot more
than what the other bowlers did. And you know, a

(39:26):
lot of different partners throughout I guess his career and
stuff like that, and he showed his longevity. So so
no doubt he will go down as one of his
genero's greats, if not the beast, I guess in a way.
And it's hard to signal out with three dreams and
as amidable career as well, and both those you know,
feed off each other quite quite well, as you know,

(39:46):
I mean, the opening pe just complemented each other. You know,
it's so good and so well and how to do
it without training there for a number of times as well,
So it's very hard to single out. But you'll go
down as one of the General's beasts of bowlers.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
And on that Neil, we're going to go. We're running
out of time your book All Outs out there according
to Ronnie here I work out at the gym with
it's going to have some cracking tails in. It's a
bit to get a copy myself. All Out by Neil Wagner. Neil,
thanks so much for your time, see mate, see thanks. Okay,

(40:20):
there's a quick corver Corps. There's a murder going on Hamilton.
He's got a knife and he's putting the boot and
it's Chris Wood. Yikes, twenty five minutes gone World Cup qualifier.
All why it's taking on Vanuatu. All it's actually leaked
a goal, but they've also scored three so three one

(40:42):
at the moment, and by the looks of it, Chris
Wood has scored the last two who opened the scoring
Garbett opened the scoring. But that's crazy again the guys
in the most ridiculous form. And look, granted, Vanuatu aren't
world beaters in all of EPL quality, but you still

(41:04):
got to kick it in the back of the old onium,
don't you it. He's certainly done that. They speak hardly
enough Chris Wood and what he's done and the way
he carries on turning up for our country to play
a ridiculous case. He does a first class or not,
doesn't matter. It's a long way to travel, but he
does it. It's out of his way to pull that

(41:25):
white shirt on Captain our Country, superstar mate, Superstar three one.
That's it, It's Middlesex. Thanks for your assistance of an evening.
My name is Darcy Watergreat. I'll be back on air
again tomorrow morning on the All Sports Breakfast between seven
and nine. Get a month. Should be fun soon.
