Speaker 3 (00:30):
Welcome into sports Talk. My name's Darcy Waldergrave. It is

Here I am locked in for another hour of talking sport.
Very Mitch orientated this sevenon. Toward the end of the program,
Mitchell Santner, the Santa Claus, the New black Caps one
(00:50):
dance nast on t twenty Captain turns up for a
bit of a yack about how he got there and
what he intends on doing once he is there. The
Santna Claus, Chalky whatever you want to call this coming
up toward the end of the program on and News
Talk ZB Mitch to the Power of two is Mitch
(01:11):
McCarran co Capta of the n Z break is what
a horrible rum they have been on half a dozen
bed sheets, soilings in a row. Darko falls center at
the same time. You got to feel for that. I'd say,
big fella, but the huge fella, I don't know what's happening.
(01:32):
I wonder if they do. Mitch is going to join
us shortly, and I'm I'm really interested to know why
they signed on the dottled line to go and play
a game on Christmas Day in Tasmania. I'm not sure
about the way this is leaking in big sports games
on what's supposed to be a family day. I got
(01:54):
some thoughts. You'll have some thoughts. Has it got a
place live sport on Christmas Day? Nine minutes after seven
before we go anywhere near that? And remember you can
contact me. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty you
can text for our standard text charge nineteen ninety that's EBZB.
But before we searche, let's do.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
This Sport today and sports today.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
He may be on holiday, but I already sided. He
popped in on his new club for a bit of
a catch up. He's alright, according to coach Tanna.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Contacted meet earlier in the weekend to said and tend
to pop up meet the players. You know, obviously he
still on his leap. Flew in that morning, flew home
that evening, got to meet everyone. Was really funny. Actually
I should have had him for longer because as soon
as he came and everyone was really quiet, and his
brother you could hear his brother just that neatural guys.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
Don't worry.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
It's just like you did on your jewels. Red Bull
boss Christian Horner has said nothing again about Liam Lawson's
possible move to the team's number two seats.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
So we have all the information.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
We're just looking at and considering, you know, all of
out speaking with the engineering team as well, and we'll
come to a conclusion in the coming days. Well it's
hope's before the weekend. Punchy guy David Nika was working
up by his coach for the best possible reason, a
title fight.
Speaker 7 (03:14):
David explains, wake up to a call from my coach,
manager nol Thornbury. He says, Sinkara's out with a broken ankle.
They've gone down the list your next. I just laughed
and said better get out of bed. Then it was
a no brain of this was a fight that I've
always wanted. It's a tough fight, but we're gonna go
toe to toe.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Get in there, get a mank So hopefully you catch
up with David did Timmorrow and have a yarn about this.
Prospects a short amount of time to tune up for
a title fight, so be it. And Nick Becker, CEO
of Augland FC is getting into the sewing of Christmas time,
summer joy. They're building a beach at Mount Smart.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
Keuies love the beach. Christmas is all around the beach.
Speaker 7 (03:53):
We've got games on the twenty first, the first and
the eighteen coming up at home, and so we thought,
how do we actually.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Bring that Christmas tradition of being at the beach to
our games.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
I've got no idea how much that would cost, but
so be it. Bring a bit that stinging it down Smart.
It doesn't matter. Leave the sharks at home, akac kicking
sand in the face of skinny kids since ages.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Ago, and that's sport today.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Talking now to Mitch mccaron is hilling to break as
a co captain. He's a guard. Looking at the sketchy
run they've had of recent times, he joins us. Now,
Mitch good evening, welcome to the show.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
Look, Dacy, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
And thanks very much for joining us. It's going to
say happy holidays, but you haven't got any, have you.
You don't get to take any time off, mate, This
is cruel.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
No, look, I shouldn't complain because you know, we get
to play basketball, sport you love for a living. But yeah,
there won't be any Christmas break going on this year before.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
We get to the Christmas Day fiasco, which I find intriguing,
Let's talk about what happens next Friday night. You've got
the Sydney Kings. Now, the word free fall. It's probably
a word you don't want to hear, but that's what
the club's going through right now. This is scary, right, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
It's it's been a bit of a disappointing run. You know,
obviously after a hot start, you know, we've obviously given
up that kind of advantage on the ladder now and
we're back into the grind of trying to find every
win that we possibly can. So you know, it's not
panic stations. I don't think every every team kind of
goes through a little bit of a rut throughout the season.
(05:32):
You know, the team's up top just managed to turn
that into a one or two game losing streak or
a three game losing streak instead of six. And we
can't change the past. We just need to turn around
and start winning very soon.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
I keep saying it. You'd probably agree basketball game time,
it's a game of runs, and I'm presuming in championship time.
It can be a game of runs as well. You
go through patches. You can't be consistently at the top
of the league. It's just not possible.
Speaker 5 (05:59):
Yeah, it's really hard to stay on top all year.
You know, everyone talks about obviously you're trying to win
every single game, and really we don't play a ton
of them. I mean, I think it's twenty nine games
this year this season, So you know, if you and
then they go fast. You know, you sometimes play two
or three a week and you turn around, you go
it's January. So you know, you can't afford to kind
(06:23):
of let go of the rope early on and get
too frustrated. You've just got to move on and keep
learning as a group, and keep getting better as a group,
and put yourselves in a finals position to play your
best basketball and try and win a trophy.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, when it counts. What about in the ship after
the game? Look, first last you'll be going you're not good.
Second year we get to the sixth loss. What energy
is there in the gym when you when you come
back again.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
Yeah, it'd be really nice to be back in Spark.
You know, obviously we've done a fair bit of traveling
and it's great to get to the other cities so that,
you know, breakers fans from from other cities can see
us play. And but you know, we were undefeated at
Spark this season, so you know we've got to keep
that streak alive and make a little run here.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
I'll tell you what. You guys are playing three dollars
fifty for the win, and you've got to win eventually.
You might be worth putting a couple of bucks on
that one. Have you deemedified mention, mccaren, What exactly has
gone wrong as far as what you're not doing or
maybe what you're leaving happened to you? What have you
looked at there as far as pulling the last six
(07:24):
games apart?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
I think it's a combination of things. You know, Offensively, defensively,
we haven't been as good as we were in the
first part of the season, and you know, we have
to face reality with that. You know, it sucks to
talk about, but you know, the reality is our half
court defense hasn't been as good and our execution shooting
hasn't been as good, and hence, while we're in the
position we're in, so we've been shipping away at that.
(07:47):
You know, each week trying to get on the same page,
and everyone, you know, plays together and execute and get
really good shots, and you know, sometimes they don't go in.
Sometimes you have games we just can't make a shot
and you rely on your defense. You just can't have
a month we don't really shoot well. And unfortunately that's
what we've had.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Hell's tych fall been going because he since he's turned up,
things have kind of slipped. I'm not saying he's responsible
for it, but what's his reaction like knowing that things
are not working as a new recruit who's been I
suppose much talked about a head of verse just talk
to us around his introduction, how he's feeling, what he's
been up to.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
I think, you know, for him, it would be you know,
there's a lot of pressure and everyone's kind of talking
about Taco. I think he's His attitude for us has
been great. You know, he came in and he's working hard,
coming off an injury and trying to do his best.
He's a bit of a enigma in our league. We
just don't have many people like him. We've never had
anyone as tall as him in the league before. You know,
(08:46):
his play style is very different to how teams recruit.
So that's something that we just have to get used to,
you know, it's something that we have to you know,
teams will play a different way against this than we're
used to seeing different types of coverages, and the better
we are at handling that, the better that you know
we'll have, we'll find more success. And for us, it's
just about finding that solving that solution. At the moment, it's.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
Time in the saddle. But you look at basketball and
the nature of the game when people get signed very
fast into very different teams constantly throughout their careers. It's
the ability to gel within a couple of games. Isn't
it not take so long? So do we question that gelling?
Speaker 5 (09:26):
Yeah, I think for us the challenges is to you know,
up speed quickly. Like I mentioned before, games come really fast,
so you know, you don't really have time to turn around.
And you know, if you if you find you're struggling
to shoot the ball, or you know you're struggling against
certain types of defenses or coverages, you know every team
is going to copy that and you might play two
or three in a week, So you just have to solve. Yeah,
(09:48):
you know, you just have to problem solve and find
a winning solution.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
Playing on Christmas Day. Mitch mccaren, how do you feel
about that, not being near your family, being out It
seems very odd to me.
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Yeah, everybody's kind of had a turn I think at
this point playing Christmas Day games, and you know it's
for us obviously traveling overseas, but that's what the challenge
that we face every season with the Breakers. I suppose
it's you know, overseas games when you go to Australia
and you're playing read games and everything's in international trip
and this is no different. You know, we'll go over
there and I think most guys are going to have
(10:23):
their families or partners there at least, so you know,
we'll travel over and kind of celebrate together a little
bit over there and try and get a win on
Christmas Day.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
So it's the first game for the Breakers through that.
But this happened regularly with the AMBL beforehand.
Speaker 8 (10:37):
Is it match?
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Yeah, Sydney. Sidney has traditionally I think they started it
off and you know they played Illawara a few times,
and then Melbourne has hosted some games as well, and
then Tazzy kind of got in on it as well,
so you know, obviously teams are enjoying doing something different.
I don't think any other Australian league. Excuse my ignorance
if there is, but I don't know of any other
(11:00):
Australian major league that plays on Christmas Day, So you know,
I guess they're trying to be a little bit different
and put entertainment on and so far it's been a success.
People seem to respond really well to it and get
around it. So, you know, unfortunately we have to do
the overseas trip, but I suppose that's we're in the
entertainment industry and then that's what we have to do.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
How does the day unfold? You get up do prisons,
eat far too much, smash a few whiskeys, and then
go to the court.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
That's the worst part. You can't eat too much, you know.
I think we'll obviously, depending on what time you play,
some games are earlier and some games are late. So
from our part, you know, we'll have to play. I
think we're at a night game over there in Tazzy,
so it'll be a pretty standard game day. You know,
we'll get to have a little shoot around in the morning,
we'll get to have proper meals rather than an early
(11:47):
afternoon game where that kind of changes you typical game
day plan. So I think it'll just be another day
at the office in terms of getting ready for a game,
and hopefully you guys don't go too hard on the
Christmas streets before.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Mitch, mccaerran, you're really looking forward to getting back to Spark.
I'm sure the crowd are as well. Light it up.
It should be a fantastic night in time to turn
around what's been going on in the last half dozen matches.
You must be confident. You've got to bring that attitude right.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
Yeah, for sure. We know you know, we're desperate for
a win at the moment, and you know, while you
know we have ir on a six game slide, at
the same time, we had a great start to the season.
So you know, we're thankful to have a small little
cushion there that still gives us a fighting chance and
we're not out of it by any means. You know,
we go on on a roll here and win a
bunch of games and we're sitting pretty for finals. So
(12:36):
that's what it's all about, Mitch.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
For you and the entire team. I'm going to sit
around on Christmas Day in my Breakers, single it and
eat and drink way too much. I'm going to take
the hit for.
Speaker 5 (12:46):
You do it for all of us. Thank you forget
the riffs call.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
You make the call on Sports Talk on your home
of Sports these talks.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
I'm a live stream it too. MT's just so you
guys know, I'm doing the mouchy for the team. That
was Mitch mccaren. He said, you said on Breakers co
cat ahead of their game on Friday up against the Kings.
They're paying three dollars fifty to win. Come on, they
haven't lost at Spark this year. They'll be feeling a pinch.
Maybe now is the time to accelerate. Maybe maybe maybe AnyWho,
(13:25):
Mitch on Christmas Day, this is interesting, the whole Christmas
Day experience, what it stands for, what it means, and
what the expectations are around the entertainment. Now. As you
heard from Mitch, a few Australian based teams have done
it before. I find it strange in an Australian competition,
(13:47):
even though the Breakers are part of that competition, they'll
drag someone over from another country to play on Christmas Day.
Just seems a bit extreme. I mean, surely the people
are really going to buy into this, aren't they the
Aussie audience. I might be wrong, I probably am. That's
why I'm asking you about this strange thing to do.
(14:09):
Is there a demand in your eyes the live Christmas
Day sport? They said it at the EPL years and
years ago. I think it stopped and kind of for
the fifties it might have stopped. Americans are all over
it with their with their football or their basketball. It
seems to almost be traditional there too, not something that's
(14:34):
got any traction over here. And he produced Duff was
just telling me that Australian cricket looked at it but
decided against it. So my question to you is there
a demand for Christmas Day sport? Is Christmas Day a
(14:54):
day that should be dare I say at Sakra san
and for family? Or is Christmas Day just like any
other day? There are eyeballs on couches, there are people
who are bored. We can get them to gain. So
why not tap into that market because it's free. It's
there like if you're an orphan, like a Christmas orphan,
(15:19):
which I was for about twenty years, and nothing else
to do on Christmas Day. Great, i't watch a game
of ball. I don't care about Christmas. Great, I don't
watch a game of ball. But I think generally within society,
Christmas is held up as a day where you chill out.
Everything else is shut, everything else has stopped. Everybody chill.
(15:40):
But now the creeping death of sport on Christmas Day
is being seen and smelt. Part of me is Christmas
is an odd time of year. I'm supposed to be
family based, and it is based on religious wants and needs.
(16:03):
So I disengage from that aspect. I celebrate christ My
daughter loves it, so I go that way. You can
expect a lot of partners men and women think the
Christmas Day is to day. They're not going to lose
their other half to a game of football, or a
game of basketball, or a game of anything on TV.
The day is actually reserved for arguing with your relatives
(16:26):
about politics and drinking too much by three o'clock. Right,
Maybe it should sit like that, Maybe it should change
like if I don't want to watch it, I simply
want I feel for the athletes that have been forced
to take the family somewhere to entertain the masses when
Christmas Day itself was an entertainment. I feel sorry for
(16:47):
the people who work the games, the ashes, if you
will that people in the concession stands feel for them.
They fun on it for them. So, from your perspective,
is there a demand for Christmas Day sport here in
New Zealand? Is it something you would buy into, something
(17:08):
you could see coming, or you did set against this
idea how everything else is commercialized? Why stop it Christmas Day?
I eight one hundred eighty ten eighty. If you don't
like it, don't go. But it feels forced on a
lot of people when apparently it's a day of family
(17:29):
and celebration.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (17:30):
I mean, you tell me, I add one hundred eighty
ten eighty Christmas is Christmas?
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (17:38):
We're too hit up about this nineteen nineteen CBS B
and I can feel it. Twenty five past seven's News
Talks THEREB.
Speaker 9 (17:48):
You did in air.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports you
men have your sale on eight hundred eighty ten eighty
Sports Talk more on your home of Sports News Talks.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
It be till the glood like Chrismas everywhere you go.
Speaker 5 (18:15):
Take a look it's a blessed and once again.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
New stalks eb It's a sports talk Kansas, nineteenth December.
It is my name's darsy loans are open O. Eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty it context you thought nineteen
ninety two that is z B z B sport on
Christmas Day got more than traction in the United States
of America. It is tradition. Interesting stats around the amount
(18:43):
of games played. Ah, there have been what I think
really in twenty five days, twenty five games of NFL
on Christmas Day more frequently in the last kind of
twenty five years that've suddenly become a go to. They say, Well,
(19:09):
the NBA on Christmas Day televised in two hundred countries.
They've been doing this since nineteen forty seven when they
played three games on Christmas Day, more than a foothold.
So people, because it's on all the time, set is traditional,
(19:32):
so why will we stop doing it? It's an expected
process now now. Back in the day, obviously, the most
famous Christmas Day game was when reportedly the English and
the Germans climbed out of their trenches and started playing
football instead of shooting at each other. The best things
that happened in war, but there were football games on
(19:55):
Christmas Day throughout Scotland and England through to like the
fifties or the sixties, so it was a dumb thing.
Cricket not so keen more boxing days the day where
you can kick back and really push back after suffering. Sorry,
enjoying your family on Christmas Day? Right, well, but torn
(20:20):
about this? This text sums it up nicely. It's Christmas
is a huge money making wrought so I don't mind
sport being played. I mean that is a point that
the whole spirit or concept of Christmas is just now
retail on crack, isn't it. That's basically what it is.
(20:41):
Spend as much money as you can to show people
you love them. Okay, there's a whole lot more traditious
out there though that don't necessarily believe it's about spending money.
It's about time. It spending time with the people you love.
And this is a day that's almost it's been ring fenced,
hasn't it as a day you just don't mess it
(21:02):
with anything else. This is what you do on Christmas Day.
But leaning into sport now because it is an opportunity
to get more eyeballs on screens. If I don't like it,
I won't engage. I think that's probably the simplest way
to look at it. And you would have heard me
(21:22):
backing on before. It's a free world. We've got free will,
which about to do what we want when we want.
So when they have half days over Easter and Anzac
Day and the like as well, and with Easter and Christmas,
I don't want to be told how to go about
my life because of an ancient celebration. I don't think
that's fair. So if I come out and say it
(21:43):
shouldn't be on Christmas Day, I'm being a bit of
a hypocrite quite frankly. Now, if I don't want to engage,
it simply won't because I'm doing something else. But the
length of this goes to the people that have to
work on that day and one day that they do
get to spend some time that has been ring fenced
with their friends and family. Suddenly they're serving chocolate bars
(22:07):
and snow cones to people. Is that right? I'd like
your opinion on. It's got a few texts old bangers
out for you. Shortly eight hundred eighty ten eighty is
your demand for it. Do you see yourself now? The
Breakers are playing on Christmas Day, You're with your crew,
You've stuffed your face with turkey or whatever you eat
(22:28):
on Christmas Day. You've already yelled at some of your
family because of their political problems in your eyes. Sit
on the couch and you switch the TV on. Would
that go down like a cup of cold sick in
your family?
Speaker 6 (22:43):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Eight hundred eighty ten eighty interested to know? Years ago,
writes Trevor, A plunket shield started on Christmas afternoon under
the black walls that Paul and As Blackwell used to
own the Breakers. No way Breakers would play on Christmas Day,
Thank you, Trevor Darcy. Come on, I don't play sport
(23:07):
on Christmas Day. Good feed and drinks day only, and
bug of the presence. That's from Steve Piney. I'm convinced
this guy Matt just calls me Piney deliberately, but I
can be Piney on various spects off of Jason pont Partey.
Before you point the finger as anyone working Christmas Day
on the news talks EB. Yes, the Christian Broadcast Network
(23:30):
take this place over, but there are reporters on desk
because this is it's a public service. News talks eb
for things like several defense and the like as well.
There are people around and the news is still covered.
So yeah, we do same as COVID. Probably most peaceful
(23:52):
time in the world up here. Actually it's only about
seven people a day and the whole building was fantastic,
But only in that aspect, Darcy, I'm all for it.
There are many other groups of people that can't or
don't celebrate Christmas. There are also many industries that already
work Christmas retailers, bars, hospital health gift staff for willing
(24:12):
to earn. They also get time at a half rates
in a day. In LEWTC. It's take three weeks off
in January when running retail scores. Now, that is from me.
In retail stores, that is from end Thank you. I
used to play nine holes of golf with my mates,
sadly all passed away. Boxing Day is the day when
(24:33):
sports should resume with a full puckle and a beer
in my hand. Thanks for that, Dave. The text fum
in about many who can't or don't celebrate Christmas in
the society you live in now is probably a lot
more app isn't it. Like sixty seventy years ago. You
(24:59):
wouldn't hear of people not spending Christmas with their family,
would you? And now go with the amount that the
population changes. People that don't celebrate Chris. It's not part
of their religious setup. I don't one hundred eighty ten
eighty is there?
Speaker 9 (25:17):
Is there?
Speaker 3 (25:17):
Do you have an appetite?
Speaker 2 (25:18):
You want to do what you want it?
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Or was this just an interruption in your day?
Speaker 2 (25:22):
Because maybe.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
If the Breakers win tomorrow, I'll watch it. Right If
they don't, I shan't here you go, Oh no, no,
I can't. I'm spending Christmas Day with my ex wife's
family and my child. No sport for Darce, So be it.
There's still another three hundred and sixty four days. I
waste It's news dogs thereb coming up shortly. Mitt Santa
(25:50):
is going to join us there new skipper of the
black Caps for all of the white ball fun that's
t twenty one day internationals. However, yack about what makes
him tick, how he got the job, what he's going
to do, why he wants it, and so on, and
so this is his news. Dog's here B twenty four
away from.
Speaker 9 (26:06):
It, Lucky lucky or something illast game that runs his
kids love.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
You could break it in if you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Put some.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
Sport stal gone newstalk z be. It was announced yesterday
that the brand new skipper of the black Caps for
the white ball games, and there's plenty of those coming up,
I tell you, with the champions Trophy on its way
as well. It's T twenty one day. Inter national's name
is Mitchell Center. He's got the job, he's got the band,
(26:54):
and now he's got to deal with me. Mitchell sand No, welcome, mate.
I may tell you I'm very good, maybe not as
good as yourself. You minaged to pick up quite the role.
Then you kept them of the white ball game. I
suppose instally, is this something that you sought.
Speaker 6 (27:09):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 10 (27:10):
I mean, I mean, obviously lucky enough to do a
little bit of the T twenty stuff the odd one day,
and I guess the avenue they wanted to go down
was the white ball versus Red Bull captain.
Speaker 6 (27:22):
But I'm happy they.
Speaker 10 (27:23):
Asked me, and it's an honor you see it coming.
I mean, there's been in talks for a little while
what they kind of wanted to do. They're still a
little bit of unknown. But I always thought obviously the
T twenty stuff after Caine and then yeah, they're obviously
the combo now which is which is Yeah, obviously.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
A huge honor and a challenge, a new challenge, but
it's exciting.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Does it change anything you do and all the way
you present, the way you play anything.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 10 (27:52):
I mean you probably have to talk a little bit
more now, but outside of that, I think you know
the game plans and everything is its the same, Try
approach it the same.
Speaker 6 (28:04):
But yeah, just try to get get around even a
little bit more.
Speaker 10 (28:06):
And I think you know a big part of that
kind of role is communication and making sure everyone knows
where they stand, what role they need to perform, and
you know where they sit in the team.
Speaker 3 (28:19):
Close relationship with the coaching staff too. That's key because
you have the conduit, after all, aren't you match?
Speaker 6 (28:24):
Yeah, somewhere in the middle there is it.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Going to Are you going to contribute more to the
coaching aspect? Do you fall into that role a little
more now that you are the.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
Captain, Well, you just take on the head coach role
as well.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Well, I don't know, you've got your with Gary Stead
or whoever it's going to be. Plainly, you've got to
be the communicator between them. Come on, let's chuck me
your bone.
Speaker 6 (28:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (28:43):
I think it's like obviously, you know, I'll leave the
coaching stuff to the coaches, and but there's obviously a
lot more you know, behind the scenes that go on,
a lot more communication between between everyone, and I want
it to be you know, everyone feels they can speak,
everyone feels, you know, a safe place, and that's what
I kind of want to want to bring forward. And
(29:05):
you know, obviously we've got a lot of experience in
the one day stuff, maybe a little bit less than
T twenty, but you just wanted to, you know, for
people to feel welcome don as soon as they're there,
and you know, gives them the best opportunity to perform
Miss Skills and that's all we can and can ask for.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Did you have a yarn with your teammates both young
and old before you accept the position.
Speaker 6 (29:27):
Yeah, a little bit.
Speaker 10 (29:27):
I mean it was kind of through that Schlanker period
where we had that kind of a newish, youngish team
in Sri Lanka, and yeah, but it was it was
nice to I guess see a few fresh faces a
blend of experience and youth, and obviously with a few
major toilments coming up, there's you know, I think we're
in a good space. We've got a lot of experience
still there with a few young guns coming through, which
(29:50):
is always nice.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
You've got similar but not the same as previous captain
to the side. You look at the calm manner in
which they approach Captain Sy and you look to Tom
Latham and you look to Cain Williamson. So consistency, attitude,
expect quite important. Do you sit with that?
Speaker 10 (30:10):
Yeah, I think you know, we've done a lot of
good stuff in the white ball for for a number
of years now, and it's more about the process of
of how we want to approach it. Take results aside.
Obviously everyone wants to win, so it's no doubt. But
you know, I think what I bring is that kind
of calm, calm approach and and just want everyone to
(30:31):
be clear, you know, in their roles, whether it's bad,
where it's the top of their mark with the ball,
and and you know we talk about you know, if
the plans right, you know we're going to miss execution,
that's fine, That's that's life.
Speaker 6 (30:43):
That's that's cricket, and we can we can live with that.
Speaker 10 (30:47):
But yeah, I think the stuff I've done so far,
that's all I've tried to do is make sure everyone feels,
you know, a part of something going forward and as
clear as they can be.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
New white ball skipper for the black Cats, Mian Santana
joins us, what about your ability to pivot as things
change out there in the park. We there's got a
lot to do with the coach only, but with your captaincy,
are you quite adept at a changing direction should be necessary?
Are you, I suppose gutsy enough to do that to
change the plan?
Speaker 6 (31:16):
Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 10 (31:16):
I mean, you know, I've seen a lot of a
lot of white ball cricket over my career, a lot
of different phases of games, and We've still got a
lot of experience that you know, I can lean on
as well, which is which is nice. But you know,
I'm I'm welcoming anyone to come up to me during
the game and kind of see what they feel, see
if they see something. But it's yeah, it's I think, yeah,
(31:39):
like you said, it's kind of a similar role. But
I think out in the middle it's it's been clear,
even me, it's been clear to to what's potentially going
to happen, what's if we can try make something happen
as well?
Speaker 3 (31:51):
How's your luck with the toss match?
Speaker 6 (31:54):
So it's not great, it's not something you can do.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
I can't break toice to either, can you. Brother. That's
that's that's kind of tough. It must be nice to
know that you can't.
Speaker 6 (32:05):
Be dropped now in how many games you're losing.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
But that solidity is what the team needs in a captain.
I don't think you'd stress about that anyway. You seem
reasonably laid back.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
No.
Speaker 10 (32:17):
Yeah, I think it's you know, it's all part of it.
But yeah, I think that continuity in selection and plans
is actually a massive part of it. I mean, changing
conditions obviously changed the team slightly, but I think we've
had successes. We've had you know, a group that's been
doing it for a long time and you know, knows
(32:39):
their game, their role, and then it's you know, when
the new guys get an opportunity, it's making them feel like,
you know, they're part of something going forward and just
trying to execute their role.
Speaker 6 (32:50):
That's all we can kind of hope for and give
the guys the freedom to do that.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
We talked before Mitchell Santana about your coaching or lack thereof. Plainly,
Gary Stead, what's middle of the year. I think his
role comes up for grabs. Do you know anything about
where he's going coaching? We have any say in what
happens if he does decide to change and not coach anymore,
be it at a test or white ball level, because
(33:17):
you're separating off you've got a Red Bull captain and
a White Bull captain. Whilch suggest possibly that might also
happen at the white ball level when it comes to
the coach.
Speaker 10 (33:27):
Yeah, I guess that's a little bit of of my
pay grade at the moment. But I'm not sure you
know what his aspirations are going forward. I know he's
done a great job for us for a long time,
and you know, if he does reapply or gets it
not again, that's cool and then but yeah, obviously we
have to wait and see we've got you know, we'll
just treat it the same leading up to the champions Trophy,
(33:47):
that's obviously the next major event for us, and you
know what happened, ever happens after that, happens. But yeah,
I'm not sure where what they're going to do. It's
I think that's probably a board decision, and I'll I'll
just try work about the stuff on the field.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
Toe the line.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
But you say it's above you pay grade. You're the
captain now, mate, I think you pay grade to be
right up there, wouldn't it match?
Speaker 10 (34:12):
Yeah, I guess we'll we Yeah, there's obviously a little
bit going on behind the scenes in the high performance
space as well, so it's I think we have to
we'll obviously just focus on on the Sri Lanka series
and and and then the champions Trophy stuff after that,
and let those guys kind of go to work about
what's gonna what's gonna happen after.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
That chalky flat line, the Santa Claus new the Skipper,
You've got another nickname we can throw at you?
Speaker 10 (34:40):
Uh, well, I saw you see one can't The other
day it was Santa's Little Help has gone from that
to Father Christmas Nice. I was like, I've got a
bit of a I've got a bit of a ginger beard,
not a white beard.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
So that's I don't know how that works.
Speaker 3 (34:53):
Well, I get in a peroxide I'm sure you can
go about it, although I don't know if you could
quite get a clause beard going on. I might be
might be a bit beyond you on that. Hey, Mentell Center,
congratulations on on the roll. I are looking forward to
continually dealing with you, whether you like it or not.
You kind of have to now, as you said, being
the captain, you've actually although I'm saying that as the
captain you could probably hide behind quite a few people,
(35:15):
couldn't You tell me you won't.
Speaker 10 (35:16):
I won't, but I, like you said, I could, I
could just kind of tell guys to do media instead.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
Brilliant media ads on officer, captain, spinner, batsman as well.
Super stuff. Good on you, Mitch, go well Merry Christmas.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
The right call is your call on eight eighty Sports
Talk Call on your home of sports news Talk Ziby.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
What I like about that bloke. I've been dealing with
them for a long time now, Hen't hasn't changed at all.
He's a connic is the best word for someone like that,
and the consistent in selection of a captain I think
is important for the continued well being of the black
Caps as a team. He's not as dry as Tom
(36:03):
Latham or as Caine Williamson, because you won't get those
guys laughing three or four times during an interview. Mitch
maybe slightly less serious, but his on field demeanor suggests
he's very serious at what he does. And the way
he's improved from being a spinner who could bult the
(36:24):
ball awe but to now rapidly becoming an all rounder
for the side a lot about his development and he
sits at the right age to be the captain. I
think it's a great move. He's talking about someone like
Phillip's being captain of the white ball game, but maybe
not secure enough in his role yet. Mitchell maybe a
(36:46):
little long in the tooth so well, he's starting in
his early thirties, isn't he But him maybe not that
secure either. It's pretty sensible. But asking Mitch about what
happens with the coach and that this conversation will go
on for a while up for grabs is the role
(37:06):
come June. I think it is, And whether New Zealand Cricket,
now that they've split the roles again white ball and
red ball, whether that looks toward the coaching split two.
So you start looking at having two distinct teams, a
(37:30):
white ball team and a red team, split and chop
and change players in between. Is that being entertained by
the power brokers at New Zealand Cricket to take the
weight off individuals? And I'm sure that the pressure of
(37:51):
leadership across tests one day is in t twenties for
one person. Is it's a strain? It's a lot to carry?
Is it necessary? Don't think it is? Same with the coach?
Is it necessary? We'll end up with a Director of
cricket who oversees all three and then individual coaches to
(38:15):
come in and work with these players and whatever formula
they find themselves and to get the best out of them.
That is the future. Just can't overload people with too
much work. Doesn't work. Great to have Mitch on the
program though, Mitch, thanks very much for joining us. It's
(38:36):
News Talks, eb. It is eight and a half minutes
to eight. He ticked anything more over about Christmas Day sport,
whether it's relevant or not. It's just another day, right,
just another day to make money off people.
Speaker 8 (38:52):
So why not?
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Who differentiates the import of days one d eighty ten
to eighty on a pitch them with that and on
Mitchell Santa. This is a good appointment, right you like this?
Is he a comfortable set in hands to lead this
one day team into the next level? I think he is.
I think he is. And as I said, he's now
(39:16):
secured his role on the teams. They can't sack the captain.
It's eight away from eight? Is the news talks heb.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Ca it's five minutes to eight.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
Marcus Laics just around the corner. The people they call
the prog and a.
Speaker 2 (39:35):
Stet Nash and I mate, how are you?
Speaker 3 (39:37):
You've got about at one hundred and twenty seconds sport
on Christmas Day for you?
Speaker 8 (39:43):
One hundred Netflix, if I'm not wrong, a streaming the
Kansas City Chiefs of Christmas Evening. That is compulsory viewing
for anyone that loves sports. But the thing that the
Americans do bloody well brilliantly that we could learn from
is sport is entertainment. Right, Yeah, they get it right,
and rugby could learn from that. Soccer's getting there, Football's
(40:03):
getting there. But if you want to know how to
do sport well, NFL Christmas Day, Christmas Evening actually on
Netflix can't get past it.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
So as far as dominating a day that generally is
seen as being a day for families that it's okay with.
Speaker 8 (40:19):
You, Stu Well, I mean the whole family can sit
down and work. You know, it's not as if it's
not as if the blokes are just going to be
sitting there. I mean the thing that we've got to understand.
And yeah, I think Ragany's in a bit of trouble,
but let's be honest, I think Gregany's in a better trouble.
But let me tell you why. Because it's not entertainment
in the way that the Americans. I went to an
(40:40):
American baseball game this year. Goodness to me, mate. The
sport obviously is the draw card, but it is an
entertainment experience.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
And the way that I went and wants to gain
the baller San Francisco is amazing. I think you're right
around there. It needs to be more. Look at what
the Aukland FC are doing now. They're basically building a
beach at Mount Smart. I mean, that's cool, and you know.
Speaker 8 (41:04):
The thing, and I'd be interested in your your well
mind you next time you are, mate. But the thing
is that these sports like football, like basketball, they understand
that the generation coming through want to be entertained. They
understand that the viewers want to be entertained. I don't
think Ragy's got the hit around global sport in the
twenty first century and in other days.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Talk mate, and we'll do it then Stewart makes sure
your listenings will get you on air again. Thanks very
much for your input. Hate to cut you up, but
we've got to go. What Stuart's saying is that the
older generation are dying and there's no use to them anymore,
so we've got to appeal to the kids. Oh that's tough. Hey, Andy,
you're off. Merry Christmas, mate, thanks for verdition me next
(41:45):
year you're poor bugger oh Man, Better luck next year
with your hosts.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
