from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Hello and welcome seven after seven of this. It's a
Tuesday evening, eleventh of March on Darcy Watergrave, Hi, how
are you looking forward to this next hour? Looking forward
to your engagement? Oh eight one hundred eighty ten eighty
three phone nationwide for talk nineteen nine two z B
(00:57):
ZB that your text line standard text charge? Does a
quie coming up on the program. Towards the end of
the show for my Warriors coach Frank Endercott joins us
to talk about, well, the lack of changes in the
side came out about an hour ago. No changes, that's fine,
calls from co changer. We'ves to be patient. As a
(01:23):
man who enjoys the wonderful condition of my lovely ADHD,
I find that a very difficult concept to swallow. Patient.
A will talk with Frank about that the no changes,
what actually has to change? And how long do we
go for without any changes before we start revolting on
(01:44):
that team? Probably a long time. We Warriors fans, we're supporters,
and we're patient. We're going to start the program of
though about as far away as you can get from
at rugby league. We're going to talk cricket. Sam Wells
have joined it the New Zealand Cricket Selector, to talk
about the central contract system, to talk about the T
(02:05):
twenty I side that has been named and what does
this all mean head of the T twenty eight World
Cup roughly in eight years time. Find out more about
that when mister Wells joins us, surely, but before that,
let's do this today and it's for today Blues Lucy
Cameron that saw Foller has had a robust start to
(02:26):
the twenty twenty five at Super season. He's been playing
at eight and blind side and he's been starting since
the get go, and he thinks that last year's cancer
scare altered his perspective on life for the better.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Before I think I was a lot more narrow minded
around my goals or how I saw myself as a
Ruby player. Now that I sort of experienced that and
I've come out on the other side, I'm not taking
the little things for granted anymore.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
AKFC just Randall has been named in the All White
squad for the final stage the Oceania qualifies. It's the
next year's Football World Cut The recall is due in
part to the injury cloud over all winger alied to
just says coach Darren Baisley.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
We just thought it'd be good to have another attacking option,
you know, somebody to add to the squad. So we
look for all the attacking options and Jesse's right on
our doorstep. We watched them at the weekend. He scored
a goal and I was unlucky not to get two goals.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
And fresh If was victory in the New Zeland Squash
Open will number four. Paul Cole is hitting over the
Detts for the Aussie Squash Open, which is number one seed.
I might it's a trip that the West Coaster is
looking forward to.
Speaker 5 (03:34):
I have a lot of friends and ADI as well.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
I played a lot of my squash there.
Speaker 5 (03:38):
When I started out professionals.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I haven't been back there and you.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Know, teen id years, so looking forward to kicking off
there in a few days.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
And that's sport today, Tim past to seven, let's hit
it with Sam Wells. New Zealand Cricket selector squad has
been that name to take on Pakistan and a home
T twenty I series gets in the way on Sunday
in Christ at two pm. The squad has been released.
There are a number of players who won't be playing
(04:05):
because of commitments to the IPL, and a couple of
boys that will be playing on men that will be
playing attempting to push their way into the selection frame
ahead of that big tournament. On all of that, we're
joined now by Sam Wellson, is it on Cricket Selector?
Speaker 7 (04:20):
Good evening, Sam, Hi Darcy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah? Very very good. Michael Brace will best perform so
well in the Hip Champions Trophy final he gets captain
the black Caps on home series. There's a five game
T twenty I series coming up against Parker Stan. A
lot of considerations in this series and a few players
back from the outset, which I like to start with that.
(04:44):
Let's look at some of those guys, the likes of
ceipher A, Nishan and Allen. What considerations around their selection
considering they haven't got central contracts.
Speaker 7 (04:54):
Yeah, look, there's a few moving parts to it all.
I suppose. First of all, we've now gone past the
Champions Trophy and in the horizon is another ICC pinnacle
event being the T twenty Will Cup in India, which
is now lessened twelve months away, so I focused with
the T twenty team shifts to that and we're really
focused on having good preparation and build up for all
(05:16):
of the ICC events and this is no different. So
we've been in talks with these players for the last
month or six weeks or so to get their commitment
for all our TIP twenty fixtures if selected for the
next year and build up and they've committed to that.
So while they are essentially contracted, if they've committed to
the T twenty preparation that we consider as required and
(05:39):
we're really pleased to get that. And look, these guys
have really emphasized with us that their priority is still
playing cricket for New Zealand and that's what they want
to do. They've come back and all three of them
have played for trophy and then put good performances on
the board. So yeah, look, it's just working with the
players and lining up, you know, a good preparation and
(06:00):
that's really what it's all about, so that we're really
happy where we've landed.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Basically, they've said if we get BBL contracts or South
African T twenty contracts, we won't be picking them up
because they can't can they if they've committed to you
and they want to get picked for that World Cup.
Speaker 7 (06:17):
Essentially, yeah, they've said that they'll they'll commit to all
like t twenty games if selected. Look and it's about
giving them, you know, enough time and communication to work
through whatever deals they have in place. But essentially, yeah,
they've committed to all the games that we have.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
New Zealand Cricket have been very fluid in this space
and I think it's the most pragmatic way to handle this.
How does that work from a selection point of point
of view when you're dealing with a number of different
contracts or lack their role. Is that tricky?
Speaker 7 (06:51):
It's not too tricky, like it's just trying to get
everyone together and the ground away for But you're right,
we've got to be a little bit pragmatic. The world
of cricket is changing. We accept, for example, in this
window you know, has been accepted for some time that
players if they get an IPL deal they go go
and do that. Equally, you know some players are going
to make a decision to go and not taking New
(07:11):
Zealand contract in playoffs where because the financial rewards make
sense for them at that time of their career or
whatever it is. But if we can find a ground
where when we're lining up for a particular event, if
we're satisfied all we can get an appropriate bur up
and commitment from the players, then I think we'd be
silly to not work with them to try and make
that work because it's in the interests of both the
(07:33):
team and the player.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
So the players that have been selected, and there are
some I would say outside it's but some people that
land is close to the core team as I'm sure
they'd like to be because they're still early in their careers.
This is all about keeping all of your options open
and giving players international experience with no promises yet.
Speaker 7 (07:52):
Yeah, I think the way in particularly this particular window,
when the IPIPL players are away, we're naturally going to
have to dig a bit deeper into the depth and
that presents more opportunities for guys and that's happened for
some time for a number of years now. So yeah,
this particular window gives guys chances. But we see where
guys perform, well, then you know they're then pushing their
(08:15):
place in the main squad. And for example, I think
Jacob Duffy did that really well. When given his opportunities.
Recently and with injury, broke his way into the Champions
Trophy squad. Now he's again here in the T twenty squad.
So look these when these opportunities presented, if players can
take them, that they'll find themselves with more opportunities in
(08:35):
the future.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
In the case of Kane Williamson, Samuels joins US and
he's in Cricket Select said he's unavailable. Where does he
sit in the profile over the next year around his
commitments or even conversations have had with him about where
he would like to be because I'm sure if he's
available and fit, he'll pick him in an instant, won't you.
So what are those conversations being, Like, Sam.
Speaker 7 (08:57):
Kine's a bit of a series by series at the moment,
and this is just one of the ones where he's
had a big workload, been away overseas for a couple
of months now, and we're just managing him series my series,
and those obviously decisions he will make. If kin you
wants to play, he'll obviously come into serious consideration and
so we'll just had to play that by you and
(09:18):
see how he is going moving forward. But he's still
playing a bit of franchise T twenty cricket around and
I'm sure he'll still in a while. I hope he
still wants to play for New Zealand moving forward, but
it's he's just at that stage of the career where
he's picking and choosing a bit to manager's workload. But
we'll just have to see how that goes moving forward.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
But in turn he will have to be available for
what India and Afghanistan, those two series in the lead
up to the ten twenty I World Cup next year.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
Yeah, that's New Zealand Crocket's position at this stage.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
I'd sam just in leaving. I'm really interested to know
about the central contracting system and the way that operates,
because when you get to the top, I suppose of
that and you start signing deals to play away and
play overseas and you forego that scene contract system, I'm
presuming that just opens up at the bottom for more
(10:11):
of a pathway, which might be a positive unintended consequence
of some of these senior players opting out.
Speaker 7 (10:19):
Yeah, I guess that's one way to look at it.
I suppose there's two discrete things there. One is the
playing opportunities and two is the contract itself. The contract
is sort of a snapshot in time of when we
had to rank players and allocate points and then that
splits out of ranking and they get off at a contract,
But that's no guarantee of selection moving forward. But yeah,
(10:39):
if players are unavailable due to playing elsewhere, obviously that
opens up playing commitments or playing opportunity sorry for others.
And yes, sometimes you do discover some players that you'd
like to have a further look at, like Tim Robinson
and Mitchea are a couple that you've noted there. So yeah,
I think I think there's some really pleasing depth there.
(11:00):
And we've obviously lost a few really experienced, you know,
high quality New Zealand players in recent times, but we've
been able to find players to step up and deliver
at different times and I think, you know, we've seen
us reach another final of an ICC Pinnacle event, so
the performance itself doesn't appear to be dropping off and
we seem to be sustaining a really good standard of
(11:21):
cricket across the formats. So that's what we're hoping to
do moving forward.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Aspirational too, because the younger players coming through going well
Liketually we'll loft a couple off the top. I fancy
bagged myself a contract. I have a chance, So it
does provide them with opportunity. What do these guys get paid?
You know, off the top of your head, in the.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
Top twenty, I roughly know what they get paid. Yeah,
I think those numbers are publicly available somewhere. But look,
they're pretty handsomely played. But certainly the guys in the
IPL are even more so handsomely paid. So there's definitely
the money probably doesn't compete with what these other leagues
(11:58):
are getting paid. And the reality is some of these
top guys are probably missing out on a lot of
money continuing to play for New Zealand where they could
make more elsewhere. But it certainly there's plenty of different
options out there for players these days.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
And one last thing, and when players do decide to
opt out of a New Zealand contract and it comes
to a big selection like the T twenty I at
World Cup, do you favor the essentially contract players. Do
you give them a couple of points an advantage or
is it just purely.
Speaker 7 (12:27):
Formed sound No, When we come to a Pinnacle event
that is solely we really are required to pick the
best team that we think will help us compete best
so help us win that. So look we're contracting side
of it. That more comes into consideration when we're in
bilateral type series and this is one of those. But
(12:49):
we've decided that this is part of our preparation towards
the T twenty World Cup and we need to start
shaping that squad, so we have reintroduced some of those
un contracted players. I think it's worth noting that that
Tim Seifer and James Nishan, you know, weren't offered New
Zealand contracts, they didn't turn one down, that they've opted
not to take up a domestic contract, so they're in
(13:09):
a slightly different basket to the type likes of Fin
who was offered a New Zealand contract but we elsewhere.
So yeah, there certainly each player is in a slightly
bespoked situation and that's why it's not that simple to
make a blanket rule for everyone.
Speaker 8 (13:26):
Forget the refs call, You make the call.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
On Sports Talk on your home of Sports News Talk.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Twenty past seven. Sam Wells, New Zealand Cricket selector, looking
at the squad that has been named to take on
Pakistan and the upcoming T twenty I series. There are
five of them, starts on Sunday two pm in christ Church.
Based on how they pick their players who they let
(13:57):
escape and govern and make money at the IPR. What's
the structure like moving through the year when it comes
to selection for what is a in the color event
which is plainly very important for New Zealand cricket, so
much more important than a T twenty I series against
the visiting Pakistan I kind of get that, but the
(14:20):
argument will always be should we be picking these players
who have turned down a central contract. They're chasing the money?
Should we even give them a chance? Would rather see
younger players maybe come in and get a chance. For
the record, I think here we should pick these players.
(14:42):
It doesn't bother me how confusing the contract system is
because it is mind madness, is it not? And has
been like this ever since Gutal de Grand Home and
all those dramas. Everything adjusts all the time, the ground
it's changing constant. The zeal And cricket are trying to
keep up with it. So if they have part time contracts,
full time contracts, blah blah, blah contracts and we don't
(15:05):
quite stand it. Does that actually matter? What do you
want to see? I want to see the black Caps
perform at Pinnacle tournaments, That's what I want to see.
Do I want to see them perform well at a
smaller tournament? Are the one against Pakis? Don't absolutely idea
(15:27):
And I think the players involved in that want to
see that as well. Damn They're going to work hard
to try and get there and try and knock off
some of these better players that think they're getting in
there by right so they're off playing on the other
side of the world. I think pragmatism is a big
thing with New Zealand cricket. I think they're managing this
(15:48):
reasonably well. But there is a downside, and that downside
be considered as this. You're a cricket fan, are you
going to part with your money for this tour knowing
that ravishing reck Revenger is not going to be playing,
knowing that Kevin Dom Kevin don health Court, Sorry God,
(16:08):
Devin God. It's all these nicknames I have around the
office and then come back to bite me. None of
the rude ones too. Devin Conway's not playing, Does that
stop you going to buy a ticket? Gwnn Phillips is
not on the party. Think I'm not even gonna bother
Does it detract from you? So there was a good
and the bad site. Personally me, I think we should
be picking black Caps players who have turned down central contracts.
(16:29):
They're chasing money, the riskers for them for no one else.
You may disagree. I eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Like
what New Zealand Cricket are doing. I think it's important
for the strength of them at Pinnacle tournaments. I eight
hundred eighty ten eighty. The lines are open. Should we
(16:52):
be picking these bandits, these gorillas, these players who are
hired guns for the national side. They turned down the
central contract. Does that respect? Probably don't even care? Doesn't
me in the slightest Oh, one hundred and eighty ten
eighty doesn't bother you? Is a sports talk on News
Talk ZBM Darcy Watter graved seven twenty three.
Speaker 7 (17:15):
They were short.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
She's that.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
In week, wasn't boy hust love?
Speaker 9 (17:21):
I was broken on page Today's old me to the
jaz But she's easy.
Speaker 8 (17:26):
To keep my arm? So will can't you hear it?
Speaker 1 (17:30):
From the biggest names in sports and then have your say,
one hundred eighty ten eighty sports talk on your home
of Sports News Talk zip be.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
It sports Talk on News Talks z B. Number of
texts have come in nineteen nine two. That's a zeb
z B or go through a couple of those shortly
and just in your calls, so you know. The top contract,
the top ranked black cat able to receive a maximum
of five hundred and twenty three thousand dollars. That's pretty
(18:18):
good coin. Like playing if you're playing the IPL, you
might be able to pick that up in space in
ten weeks. It might might be in your operative verd
here twentieth ranked receive a maximum of three hundred and
sixty seven thousand dollars. Twentieth ranked player, it might be
(18:40):
able to get more than that. That's a big punt
to me saying, you know what, I don't want a
central contract. I'm going to try my hand in the
open market. Man. That is some who's that right there?
Speaker 1 (18:51):
Is?
Speaker 10 (18:51):
It?
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Not all strength to them? I say, good day, Allen.
Speaker 8 (18:56):
How are you you know?
Speaker 6 (18:58):
I agree with you totally, Darcy. Actually I actually heard
that Kane Williamson is opting out of a central contract.
Is that correct.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Caine is what you call a casual contract.
Speaker 11 (19:19):
Okay, but it's Kane's Kane, right.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
I mean, you get you're about to do what you want.
Speaker 6 (19:26):
Another question, darkin Pakistan here and international cricket again on
Sunday is fantastic. I remember Pakistan were a much greater
crocketing side than India, India or any rate. So it's
central contracts. I agree with you totally. I think otherwise
(19:49):
the T twenty game takes over the world and we
are not seeing test crickets here played somewhere in New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Wellway are we because everyone's bending over I think, well
now on the thing for me here is that I
may well be wrong. I've been wrong before, I'll be
wrong again. For me, there's no doubt about that. But
in order to get to the top level of cricket
in for example, the IPL or any of those leagues,
(20:17):
I think you've got to prove your wares on the
international stage. And that's why people need to play for
New Zealand, and that's why they want the Black Camp.
It's not only the passion of the country. If they
can prove to the playmasters, Hey, look at me. On
the highest stage internationally. Look at me, smash these guys around.
I think I'm worth a contract. That's where it comes from, right.
Speaker 6 (20:40):
Darcy. I think we need need to actually focus on
at this moment on how good this is the other
inside is, because this is probably the best in the
inside and history. No, the same side that beat Australia
in Australia three years ago, whatever side's done that, So
(21:01):
we need to like, actually I hear in the read
the headlines New Zealand perennial chokers. My goodness, we are
we just punched so well above our weight and you
know the fact that it's we need to celebrate this
extraordinary shall cricket side Alan, I'm not going to disagree.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
And they say chokers because they get to the big
dance and they can't push it through except for the
probably most important one in which to the World Tears Championship. Yeah,
but to get to where they get to, yeah huge,
I got you on that one. And an asterisk around
this Indian side that a very good one day side.
Without a doubt. Everything was in their favor. I mean
(21:44):
everything was in their favor. I'd win against New Zealand
if I had that much in my favor, it should
be ashamed of yourselves. Anyway, let's get to the text.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
Doc.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I'm all for players making money on the hit and
giggle circuit, but they shouldn't take New Zealand Cricket contracts
as well. That is from Steve. So I think what
we're seeing Steve is that the balance here is a
very delicate one that New Zealand Cricket are dealing with.
They realize that things are changing almost on a monthly basis,
(22:15):
and they've got to be careful that they don't lose
their best players to these overseas leagus. But as Sam said,
maybe when a window comes and it makes things very different,
maybe there's a time where we know where these players
are committed to various leagues and it doesn't get in
(22:36):
the way of international cricket. It'd be good pragmatic. I
go back to it again. That's what I believe. It's
go to another text. Allen agrees with me. Alan, thank
you very much. Marcis picked the best players available. I
don't care if they are on or off contract. It's
all about picking the best team because we have to
win and get a to us. I'm looking forward to
(22:57):
seeing what Finn Allen brings. But the Beast is the
best cricketer in New Zealand right now. And good on
that's from Dougie and Michael Bracewell. That was amazing. Tell
you what, we're looking down the barrel of many shotguns.
But somehow crawled our way back twenty being beaten by
that much. That's not bad going still, second though, and
if I'm cruel enough to say that Ian Foster failed
(23:19):
because he didn't win the Rugby World Cup, it was that,
but he got to the vine as he didn't have
he didn't win. I don't think we place our black
Caps that high. I think we expected when everything, we
expect them to get close. So should we be picking
black Caps to play who aren't centrally contracted? So you
know what, go off and play with the girilla leagues? Great,
(23:42):
but we're not giving you a chance to get into
the national team. We're focusing with people who want to
stay here. Is that a better way to do it?
To throw this contract system out? Oh eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty lines are open. They need to adjust
the contract system in time. The last contract system was
(24:03):
signed in what was a mid twenty two, this five
year deal. Have your things changing a couple of years?
Who knows? This is news Talk's a B seven thirty
three lines are open and Frank Endercott joins us toward
the end of the program to look at the wires,
what went wrong, what's going right?
Speaker 9 (24:21):
And how patient should we beit.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
This borstal gone Newstalk ZB Now the Wise team's been
named to take on Manly. That's eight o'clock on front.
Would you start with these Friday games purely from a
selfish standpoint? Saturday night please, Saturday afternoon, thank you consider
(25:05):
your broadcast. They're playing Manly eight o'clock on Friday at home.
The teams come out, no changes, unchanged, the coaching staff
and webs. They've got complete faith and the boys that
went out there and didn't perform over in Vegas the
(25:26):
Warrior's team fullback times nickel Clik starred. You've got teen
to opiky on one wing or to a basis check
on the other tower and a Pompey. Your two centers
Harris Ta Viva Metcalf six and seven fish at Harris Wade, Egan,
Mitch Barnett, two front rollers in a hooker thrown in
(25:47):
the Medal for good measure, Kirk Capable, Marata near Cordy
Aeron Clark. There that's your thirteen interchange from walker Ford.
I'm among a halaesima, Healey Martin, you're a mere toyava
I for and Cossie. We'll see what that makes up.
I think I know what the four are going to be,
and that's going to be Dylan Jackson to me and Lecqua. Anyway,
(26:08):
that's the team. No change. Were joined now by for
what Warriors coach and be League pundit and frantic drinkers
of a cup of tea, mister Frank indacops talk about it.
Speaker 11 (26:20):
Welcome Frank, good Indian Darcy. Nice to be on and.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
It's great to have you on to talk about the
ups and the downs of the Warriors. Of course you'd
say it's a down right now after what happened in
Las Vegas. I got to ask this first up question
and the coach, Andrew Webster, he said, look, you've got
to be patient. You've got to be patient with the halves.
You've got to wait. They've got to take time before
they build into that role. But I suppose when you
(26:46):
look at that, what do they do in the off season.
I'm a very impatient man, and I don't know if
I want to wait for metcalf. Is he fair enough
on that one?
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Oh?
Speaker 10 (26:54):
Look, I understanding the patients, but that's why you have
two trial games leading into the first game, and you know,
to get those combinations right. But yeah, I can understand
was sticking with the same team, Darcy, and the coach
is prerogative.
Speaker 11 (27:09):
Of course, he's showing faith in his players.
Speaker 10 (27:12):
Every player deserves a second chance, but the players also
should feel grateful that he's giving them that second chance.
After the effort in Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Well, you say an effort, It wasn't much of an
effort in Las Vegas. Can you put your finger on
why it just went like it did. Besides the fact
that the opposition hit the ground running, Well.
Speaker 10 (27:31):
I think the opposition were more prepared for the game
from what I seen. I was actually there in Vegas
to watch it, and you know, before the game, I
was quite confident.
Speaker 11 (27:41):
After the first five minutes, I wasn't.
Speaker 10 (27:44):
I looked at the teams when they put the teams
up on the big screen, Darcy, I actually said to
my wife, look, I had a real problem here. Even
though cameras are the rank outsiders. I like the look
of the centers, and I like the look of their halves,
and I look at air halves and their centers and
they're all pretty inexperience, and I thought that's where it's
(28:05):
going to be one and lost.
Speaker 11 (28:06):
But and it was really but in saying that, our.
Speaker 10 (28:10):
Forwards look good on paper, but they kept coming through
camera and kept coming through the middle on us too.
So we' got a lot of improving to do on defense.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
So in the preseason, surely a lot of that is
ironed out. Or is it a case of Andrew Webster
just unsure who is six seven were going to be
so they just couldn't establish what they needed to establish
in that time as opposed to just running out and
down sand hills.
Speaker 11 (28:33):
Oh yeah, running up and down sandels.
Speaker 10 (28:35):
You just look at their fitness and you think, well,
you know, they both fit, and then he's got to
come up with the right combination. He come up with
that combination Metcarf and Harris Devita. He's got to stick
with him for two or three games. You've got to
give them a bit of time to gel. I wouldn't
be looking any further out than three. But they should
go a lot better this week against me, and even
(28:55):
though they're up against a real class half combination and
Brooks and Cherry Evans. I mean, the way they played
the other night, it was they were on fire. So
they need to really up their game. They worry, and
I'm not just talking about the house. I'm talking about
one to seventeen.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
What do they have to share up first and foremost?
If you're looking at that, is it clogging up that
middles area? Is that what they're going to look at first?
Is it maybe not being so squashed when it comes
to the offense on the outside. Is there an area
where you really would look at straight away?
Speaker 10 (29:25):
Frank Well, the defense is a team responsibility in tackling
his personal it's up to the player. So you look
at where the you know, the tries were scored, and
you say, now, did the coach have the right strategy
here in defense by having the player in the right spot,
And in most cases.
Speaker 11 (29:43):
He did, and the players just slipped off the tackle.
So the coach. You can't blame the coach for that.
That's it.
Speaker 10 (29:48):
And he can only pick the side the best side
he's got available. And I'm just you know you don't
make changes. That's why I understand, understood, understand and keeping
the same team. You can't make changes Darcie, and that
you're going to improve it each position that he makes
the changes to have someone better to go wepen and
(30:08):
then I look at who's there and say, well, have
we got anyone better to go in? So I can
understand him and sticking with the same team, But they
really need.
Speaker 11 (30:16):
To show the faith back and the coach by performing.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
When you look back at that game, who stood up
for you? Look to the pozzitles because you know, being
the bloody medium or always looking at the negatives, aren't
we can't help ourselves. But when you look to that game,
have you looked and go, you know what, that was
a class performance. We can build on this. We know
where you're going. Where are those areas well?
Speaker 11 (30:36):
Two of us?
Speaker 10 (30:36):
A ship was the best player on the park without
a doubt. I thought Kirk Capele played played a pretty
good sort of a game. And guys like Barnet and
Fisher Harris always give their best, you know, I mean,
you know some of those players just just didn't. They
weren't they looked as over they still on the poking machines.
You know, they just weren't. They didn't have their mind
on the job. But back home this week, I'd be
(31:00):
real disappointed, as Andrew Whibson would if they didn't really
up the ante this week and push me in the
real close.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
What do you say to the players like that, because
they all know. I'm sure they are super hype, super
excited to get over to Las Vegas and the occasion
may be overwhelmed. It was too much, But inside themselves,
they don't know they've let the club down. They'll let
themselves down, their fans down as well, So it's almost
say much their internal drive should make up for what
happened two weeks back.
Speaker 11 (31:28):
And it will. It will. The players will be feeling
bad about that performance.
Speaker 10 (31:32):
Snow player likes to go out there and perform like that,
so they're evident their own.
Speaker 11 (31:37):
Hits are really up there game this week.
Speaker 10 (31:41):
But you know it's it's just if I was a coach,
I wouldn't have even shown them a video.
Speaker 11 (31:46):
And I don't know what they have, but I wouldn't
shown them a video of that game.
Speaker 10 (31:48):
I just put that game aside fresh next week and
go out there and be manly how do.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
You go plan wise when you look at the structure
of their offense and how they look to put together
an attack on the spine came under a bit of
criticism for what they couldn't do. Do you feel like
they had a ten on what they need to do
when they actually had the ball.
Speaker 11 (32:10):
I think they know what to do.
Speaker 10 (32:12):
I think they were just a little bit rusty, and
you know they need to get wroll.
Speaker 11 (32:16):
They've got that rusty out of the way now they
had their bad game.
Speaker 10 (32:20):
And go out there and there and you know, just
go over your team plays all week, your structure, your
attack structure, your defense structure, and really work on the
basics of the game. But most of all, go out
there believing in yourself against really and believe you can
win the game. Because they're not a bad side. They
showed the other night that they could put fifty on
(32:40):
the side if you went on. So you know, you've
got to be up for it, and you've got to
believe in yourself, and I hope they do.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
And Metcalf, you've got a guy who off the mark
is phenomenally quick. Maybe he didn't back himself in Nothing Vegas.
Maybe we didn't see enough of that from him, whereas
that's one of his I suppose stronger points in the jersey.
Speaker 11 (33:02):
I think they're in this kicking game.
Speaker 10 (33:04):
I think that I think the kicking game is going
to be improved within the side. I think Wade Egan's
a good, honest player at hooker, but he needs to
he needs to have more runs from dumby half because
time to go. But that only comes off quick play
the balls. So the forwards have got to do their
bit too. Yeah, there's improvement in every player in this team,
(33:25):
even two of ours a ship. Every player can improve
and they all come up and have an improved performance
this week, playing at home in front of the home
crowd home.
Speaker 11 (33:36):
I believe that they can. They can give Many a
real run for their money.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
The right call is your call on eight Sports Talk.
Speaker 8 (33:45):
Call on your home of sports news Talk.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
Frank Endercott there joining us to look at the Warriors
team name today, no changes ahead of their Friday night match,
and it's manly. So Frank's like, oh yeah, three weeks
after that, maybe you start rolling heads. Understand that faith
in the team that you sell to execute the plan
that you've been working on all through off season. Didn't work.
(34:12):
Is that a reason to draw up? Kick people into touch?
Give him another chance? Three weeks about right or not
not being a coach, I couldn't tell you. But as
a fan, and we all are fans, all most of
us are anyway, stacks in your throat. Doesn't a result
like that and an effort like that? I don't know
(34:36):
if we saw much. I'll keep banging on about to
Marty Martin and maybe that I'm not there coaching. There
was something at Webster saw that he didn't like. So
he's run with Metcalf. It's like Metcalf to run kick,
maybe control proceedings a little more. But regardless of that,
(34:59):
it's not the case. Will there be a left from
the Warriors on Friday night back at home, back in
front of their faithful? Has it sold out yet?
Speaker 8 (35:11):
Andy?
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Wouldn't surprise me? Ever, hadn't. If it had, I'm sorry.
There should be a better performance. Look at man you
think what really?
Speaker 11 (35:22):
Really?
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Anyway? It's coming on Friday eight o'clock up against Manly.
No changes have been made in that side faith shown
by Webster with the guys that served the team in
that first up game. Let you get to give him
credit for that. It's got faith in his men and
hopefully they repay that. We will see. Is that the
(35:48):
right move though, don't need jerk on me because I
was already doing it for you. But with this wise
teams at the right move to like wait for two
three matches before you start punishing people for a lack
of performance. And what it takes. I think of there
zero and three, all sorts of heads, all twelve minutes
to eight going out next. Your call is one hundred
(36:15):
eighty eight today eight Marcus lash up after the new
sport and win the package at eight o'clock today, Paul,
(36:37):
how are you.
Speaker 11 (36:38):
Peal good things?
Speaker 5 (36:40):
Does he hey? Does? The rugby league now was a
game of two halves?
Speaker 7 (36:43):
What I mean?
Speaker 5 (36:44):
Why there is the sixth and the seven the halves
we saw on the weekend. The teams that basically dominated
had fantastic halves combinations, you know, the Broncos, Panthers and
so on. When I saw Metcalf, when I heard he
was going to be trying at number seven, you know
in the preseason he had he didn't really convince me
(37:06):
in those trials. He didn't absolutely didn't convince me. In
the last game we just don't have time to hav
to learn how to manage a game and to sort
of bet him in. We don't have time for him
to do that. If he doesn't have an outstanding game
this weekend as a number seven as a game manager,
well he needs to go back to number six where
he has been in the last few years, and he's
(37:27):
dominated because of his speed.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
You know, we just we didn't see him make a
lot of good yards, do we, No, noub We've.
Speaker 5 (37:33):
Got to mighty there, Yeah, we've got to mighty there.
We've got down a boyd sitting there. You know, we
don't have time for him to oh, let's just be pacial.
So we can't afford to do that.
Speaker 7 (37:43):
Mate.
Speaker 5 (37:43):
If we have three or four losses in a row,
well it's unacceptable. The season's over mate.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
Well it's not a development league and you and you
look to I'm thinking, what am I messing around to?
Mighty Martin? Have I got this wrong? Pull? But last
year when he stood in for Seawn Johnson, team started winning,
right then Sewan decided to come back or they repicked
him again and things fell over again. Look to me
like he was doing what one is to you? Is
there something that went on training. Is there? Did really
(38:13):
this guy accelerate ahead of to mighty Martin Metcalfe in
that off season time, mate, I don't think so.
Speaker 5 (38:21):
I mean metcalf is a number, he's like Lewi. He's
a ball running he's very quick off the mark. He's
a number six. He's not a game manager. So we've
got two guys sitting there who are game managers. So
if we're going to wait for this guy and be
patient for this guy after two, three, four, five, six rounds,
it's not not good enough, mate. We need to we
need to win this Friday, Mate, too.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
Much work from your six to say, actually, because they
do interchange from time to time. You say the game
of two hards, it is possible for a six player
sevens role and vice versa. But is that too much
on Harris to Viata?
Speaker 5 (38:58):
I think so. HER's Savita is not He's not a
half mate, to be honest. He's a utility and this
is three in my opinion.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
Anyway.
Speaker 5 (39:04):
You know he's he can he can be a playing
the second row, he can play the hooker. He's a
fantastic utility like did and Walker. But you know the
teams that will win this year the teams that have
the six and seven who dominate in managed games, and unfortunately,
you know, if metcalf doesn't produce an outstanding game at
seventh week, well it's all over mate.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
Well, Paul, we will see, we'll sit and we'll watch.
That's coming up on Friday night at eight o'clock. You
want to know more about what's going on with metcalf Well,
I know a guy he can tell you he should
he selected him. It's coach Andie Webster.
Speaker 12 (39:41):
Yeah, definitely, Like I think I'd love the fans always
be patient.
Speaker 7 (39:45):
But.
Speaker 12 (39:46):
Like they'll see a really good football player and Luke
Metcalfe he'll be a really good anaural player. I actually
believe he can be this week. You know he wasn't
perfect last week, but certainly not hang in it on.
Luke got a lot of confidence in him, and I
think the fans will certainly see. I think the fans
already have seen moments before Luke can do. And then
I put it all together for him in our forward
(40:08):
to go forward with defense better now outside Bucks through
their job, not guys like Luke will gets a show.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
We certainly hope so Andrew webs their head coach of
the Warriors, backing up as you would backing up your
man to play in number seven. Metcalf with that role
didn't impress last week. This week, Paul thinks it doesn't
work this week he could be in trouble. Maybe Frank
says that Frank Endicott had joined us before. We're looking
(40:35):
at possibly three weeks. If things don't change, then maybe
some tweeks I'll go back to it again. The man
who is at the cold face, the man whose job
depends on this, the man who is with these players
right the way through pre season, who's busily coming up
with cunning plans to at least get the top eight
(40:56):
in the NRL, is Andrew Webster. He is in a
much better position than any of us to make that
judgment call. They're sitting on the sidelines as fans. We
see what we see, and what we saw didn't fill
us with confidence. So yep, you can ask us to
(41:17):
be patient and look, you never know. Some of us
might be wonder if the Eels are asking for people
to show patients after getting destroyed by the storm yesterday.
Oh sorry, Sunday. That first up game last week was
a Thursday night and the Broncos just ripped apart the Roosters.
(41:37):
I wonder if the roosters coaches asking them for patients
so trends asking them not to burn the doors down
and what other big results of the Seagulls and the
Cowboys that was pretty one. Oh no, we're playing them
on Friday. I'm darsy water to go. Thanks to listening
to the program. Andy Darf has been looking after my
(41:58):
wants and needs, basically putting the program together. I'm just
the meat puppet. It's a powerful mental limit, isn't it.
