Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildergrave
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Edb ha ha yep man will get me straight to culture.
Good evening. I'm Darcy Waldergrave. This is Sports Talk. I'd
say this is my program on News Talks AB, but
it's partially owned by Jason Pine. Also the production staff
(00:33):
Danny McDonald, Andy Duff and more recently and most dominantly
mister Ans Millicich. We are sports from now through at
till eight o'clock tonight. It's all about rugby tonight, make
you ring up and telling you met robe talking about
so much other than rugby recently. But we are on
(00:54):
the cusp of the semi finals of Super Rugby Pacific.
This competition started off many many moons ago. It has
provided endless inertainment, great grist for the mill Lots of
fascinating viewing hours, some wonderful interviews. Wee bit of controversy
(01:17):
predominantly made up by scribes who had nothing else to
complain about. They're so used to moaning all the way
through Super Rugby when it actually ended up being quite
a good season. What am I going to do now?
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I know the quasi quarter finals let's roll into them
and start punching them defenseless. But it's been fantastic. I
want to talk about that after our first interviews. A
few lines i'd like to talk down. Obviously, we've got
the Crusaders and the Blues down at the Orange Theory
Lean to on Friday night. What a miserable place to
(01:47):
play rugby. It would be great to watch, not that
I have ever watched rugby. They've watched league there way back when,
but of course I haven't lived in christ here for
twenty five years. But it's a horrible place to play rugby.
And they said the Crusaders in which coase you love
it and they're not on unbeatable, but that might change.
The Blues have been rolling teams. They rolled the Chiefs.
(02:11):
Nobody saw that coming, now did they. I think the
Hurricanes quite saw what the Brumbies did either, and the
Brumbies rewards to travel to the tron on Saturday evening
to take on Chiefs. A winner of that, well, won't
worry about that now because we've got the four best
teams in Superabian. That's what I'd like to discuss upper
after our first chat. I've actually got a double act
(02:31):
going on. I've managed to con on a couple of
open sides to come on the show with me. And
before you say, there are only one open side and
the fifteen granted. One of them is the assistant coach
who used to be an open sized and age, Matt Todd.
The other one is Tom Christy. Both together, have we
yack about what happened last week, what's going to happen
tomorrow night, and I dare not talk about beyond that
(02:52):
because that's called putting the markets on people. Later on
in the piece, No, we're not just going to be
concentrating on the Crusaders. We've got assistant coach of the Blues,
Paul Tepple. He joins us to talk about the clash
coming up tomorrow night, which is going to be a
difficult watch because I'm on air, But that's okay. I'll
try and multitask. Good luck dos. That's our plan. We
(03:15):
have got three super rugby players slash coaches on the show.
We're also going to have you on text and if
you want, nineteen ninety z BZB as standard text charge
does apply. But let's not break with traditionary. Let's start
with this Score Today and Sport Today. Kiewe Golf Hobbit
(03:39):
Ryan Fantastic Mister Fox is summoning the fire from the
depths of the hell this weekend as he watchs the
more door of major golf courses, the imposing Oakmont Country Club.
He welcomes the challenge. He fears nothing.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
I like hard golf, and this week's going to be
about as hard as it gets. Yeah, just go out
and see what happens. My prep's going to be relatively
limited after last week, just trying to recover and get
some energy again. But obviously I'm playing well as well,
so I kind of got nothing to lose to go
out and give it a crack and see what happens.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah. I've never seen him in bea feet, so I
don't know if he actually has hairy enlarged feet. I've
got noice. I really shouldn't call him the hobbit. I'm
really sorry, right and Silver Ferns coach Dame Noling Todua.
She's on a quest as well for her A and
Z Premiership teams to maintain consistency.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
That's probably our holy grail is how you can keep
the intensity but also repeated and being consistent, whether that's
from individuals or you know, at the end of it,
it's going to be the best team that can stay
in that realm origin bound.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Why the impressive Kurt Capel isn't being allowed to pump
up the tires of his shambolic Maroon's team. The AUSSI
media want to focus on winners, right like the Warriors.
Question upon question around. What's making the Penrose Mob the
toast of.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
The n R A lot to Scott to do with
the coaching stuff and just the amount of buying from
all the younger boys coming through. They've got a tremendous
talent obviously in the younger guys there, and it's a
credit to the coaching staff and the people around the
club that are getting them to buy in and get
them to stay at the club as well.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
And it's been a quarter of a century since the
Indiana Pacers have had an NBL Finals game on their
home court, and they made the most of it today
beating the Oklahoma City Thunder one sixteen, one oh seven.
They lead the best of seven series to one, as
seen on ESPN.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
The Pacers dream of their first NBA title very much alive.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
They're two wins away from a championship.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
I think last time they had an NBL's Final finals
game on their home court, I was still abaman. Wow,
And that's sport today. It's a very warm welcome to
the program to a couple of men from the Crusaders.
(06:03):
We welcome in assistant coach mister Todd, and I'm Christie
joins us as well. Get a mean house tricks. How
are you shaping good?
Speaker 8 (06:13):
Good?
Speaker 9 (06:13):
Good to be here? How are you going?
Speaker 2 (06:15):
I'm I'm all right. I'm really looking forward to Friday night.
It's an understatement to say you would be as well,
because these are the clashes, aren't they? Up against the Blues.
These must tighten you up quite a lot.
Speaker 8 (06:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I think history kind of sit there and stone and
then we just go out there and liver. The Blues
are playing some good rugby at the moment, so we'll
just go out there and give them a lesson.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
Hopefully it's the idea. They've peaked right at the right time,
haven't they. They've got their timing, and I suppose they
haven't done it too late that it's been right on
the edge. So they've got some wonderful energy there.
Speaker 9 (06:49):
Matt see exactly. There are time they're un nicely, I
guess you could say, and certainly they went on the
weekend very good win so and you know they're proven winners.
They got the job done last year, so we know
the challenge is going to be this weekend and we're
excited by this is the top of year. You want
to be playing and to be at home this time
a time a year is exciting.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
How much from a coaching perspective have you laid on
these guys after what's been achieved in the last couple
of weeks. Man, where do you need to push? Where
do you need to lift?
Speaker 9 (07:19):
It's a balance this time the year. You know you're
not getting any fitter, really stronger this time of year.
It's just making sure everyone's clear on what they need
to do on the weekend. They're fresh and I guess
the fuel tanks that are fall for Friday night. So
it's a balance, balancing neck. But you know, I've had
finished a good session here in cold conditions. But I've
had a good week so far and happy we were
(07:40):
at of the team.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Do you look back Tom at the enviable record of
the Crusaders when it comes to big matches, like semi finals.
Do you carry that into games like this?
Speaker 3 (07:52):
I mean, it's a nice stet to have, but at
the end of the day, history doesn't actually mean anything.
You got to start at Lowell and the best team
will go out there on one. So obviously history is
nice to have on your side. It's nice to look
at for at the end of the day, it's not
going to give you anything on the field or no
sort of advantage. You've got to go out there and
earn it every time you play and finals that's what
(08:12):
it's all about.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
What did you pick up, Matt out of last week's game?
Was there anything alarming, anything of concern that you need
to tweak And of course conversely, what made you smile?
Speaker 9 (08:24):
No, there was plenty of good stuff. I think the
way that we controlled it for large parts, I think,
you know, it just showed when we went a man
down the difference it makes to those small margins of
playoff time. That's the discipline side of It's important. But
did a lot of the basics well, We kecked well,
set piece perform well, put them under pressure and that's
what you need, you know, Cold wet nights, those are
(08:45):
sort of the areas you need a nail. And then
when we had opportunities to take once we took them.
And we all know this time of year, you know,
the margins are smaller, so when you get opportunities, you
got to take them. And we executed pretty well on
the weekend. Same again this weekend.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Tom the pack that was a well oiled machine. And
I think when you've got a monster like Fletch and Nele,
I mean, what can't the guy do? He is a
monstrous player.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yeah, he's he's a base or even walking around the
facility in the gym, he's a big boy, he moves well,
he's athletic. And then the key mindset is he just
loves a scrum, so he loves putting his head in
those dark places and going forward. And as we love
about a tidy prop.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
What's the chat been like Tom around the shed since
that victory? What have you guys been focused on or
do you just ignore what's going on and talking about
golf be or something else.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
Yeah, there's definitely a lot of schet around golfer and
a good crew always gets out on the day off.
But I think finals, fuddy, there's only four teams lists,
so there's an element of just enjoying every day and
not taking that for granted because we've got to go
go out and earn another week, earn another day, just
keep earning it. So, yeah, there's a lot of fun.
We have a lot of fun behind the scene. But
(09:59):
there's a lot of hard work, a lot of rugby conversations,
and a lot of details that goes into it.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Who's got the game? Who can actually wield a club
with great success? That don't say Will Jordan. I don't
want to hear that the guy's too talented.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Wow. Well, we've actually got an orange hat that goes
to our kind of tour leader on the golf course
every week. And to be fair, Will Jordan has played
some cheerable terrible goals this year and he won't mind
me saying that, but he did front had the most
stable for who's currently the holder?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Wow, so he turned it on when it really mattered.
That's a means Matt, as a former open side yourself
and you can talk to this as well. Tom. How
much time do you spend in Christy's ear telling him
what he's doing right and what he's doing it wrong,
and then retelling tales from back in your Healthyon days now.
Speaker 9 (10:48):
I think you always want to see him at his best.
Your help out in any way can. But Tom's played
a lot of big match foody and a lot of
fuddy this time, so he knows what's required this time
of the year. And it's what's great about the squad.
There's plenty of big match experience guys, so they know
what's important and what they need to get right through
the week. As coaches, it's just about in the best
environment to set them up for the weekend. So Tom
(11:11):
doesn't want to hear any of my old story.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
There's it's good to sound out ideas and ask for
little feedback. I mean, I'm pretty confident these days and
know what my game where my game sits best, but
the ability to someone like Poddy little gyms or little
pieces of a bias just on the flyers really good
for my game as well.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Playing at home, possibly for the last time at the
Orange theory lean to kind of bittersweet because hopefully the
weather is horrible for the Blues when they come down,
But kind of weird if it is goodbye to that
place been your home since the earthquakes.
Speaker 9 (11:49):
That yeah, it has been a home and it's probably
a grandmost team take coming, so it's probably not a
great ground to watch footy in, but it is special
to us. That's a lot of fond memories there and
a lot of you know, special memories there for us
as a team. So it will be a sad I
guess goodbye, also exciting because of what we're moving into
(12:09):
next season. If we won, we'll get a home final.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
And that would be a hell of a way to
see off the place, wouldn't it to go like that
for the crowd to say goodbye? Do you think maybe
the fans might like butcher the place and they leave
and take seats and everything else with them.
Speaker 9 (12:25):
I think it will help with the demolition of it
a couple of seats, so they'll probably be encouraged.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
There's just maybe a bit more urgent to finish that
new build in town and then we can get in
there for our one.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Oh my lord, how is that building? As a former
christ Jetch resident myself, every time I go down, it's
it's like something out of war and the world's the
way it's looming up. That is one dominant stadium, isn't it.
Speaker 9 (12:48):
Yeah, it's going to be it's going to be great
for the city. It's certainly it stands out and it's impressive,
and you know it won't just be for Body, It'll
be all sorts.
Speaker 10 (12:55):
Of things that brings to the city.
Speaker 9 (12:56):
So it'll it'll certainly add plenty, and by all accounts
that you know, it's on track ahead of schedule, which
is very rarely stays to builds that side. So certainly
something we're looking forward to in the future. But you know,
at the moment, we're worried about a game. This weekend took.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Long enough to build on him, come on, it should
be coming in before time after it started. Hey who
he not not freaked out about, but who within the
Blues team requires maybe a little more attention than the
other guys, because as you said, they're playing really well
at the moment. So is there a focus point at all, Matt.
Speaker 9 (13:34):
They've obviously got a lot of quality players, you know,
well led by Paddy. He's a great leader for them
and a you know, probably an inspiration for them, and
Body at ten, you know, very influential figure in the game.
But if you've put too much attention on one or
two people, you know, and they've got as many quality players.
As they do, someone else will hurt you. So we
understand their strength and you know what we need to
(13:57):
take care of. And certain individuals are part of that.
But you know, across the board we need to be
on and be fed, do a job.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
Tom Rob Penny, how is he at the moment? Me
be trying to calm the fun But after last season
he'd be dancing jigs, wouldn't he.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
No, he's a real level headed leader of us, and
he does it really really well. I think Toddy can
probably touch on it more. But the way he drives
the coaching groups each bring the best out of them,
but then oversees our whole program, gets around the players,
kind of lifts has all those little conversations around the group,
and he does that really really well.
Speaker 9 (14:32):
Yeah, I hang it.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
You know.
Speaker 9 (14:33):
Obviously he's experienced coaching, has seen a fair few winters
and a fear few different seasons and that so has
been in the ups and downs to coaching for a
long time now. So like Tom said, he keeps it
nice and level headed, you know, does get too high
on the wines or too low on the losses, and
keeps everything in perspective. And he's been great this year,
and you know he's excited for this weekend as we
(14:56):
all are.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Is the weather going to turn pair shaped? Tell me please?
Speaker 9 (15:01):
No, it's pretty cold today and it doesn't look like
that we're going to see any more sun today, so
I'm not sure it. Certainly it won't be tropical. I
think he's only team sun for that for three minutes
since the winter last week, so it's been cold, and
you know, by seven o five Friday, not even if
the sun does make an appearance during the day, it'll
be it'll be cold and you know where it's running
and I'm not sure, but it'll certainly feel wintry and
(15:24):
you know, be a cold that night.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
The good news is for us sevens, if it's raining
snowing window, it doesn't really change our game all that much.
So it's more for the nine tens and backs to
sword out and look after.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
It's seven twenty two Sports talk on that news Talk ZB. No,
this is not our Crusader's fest. I just like the
idea of having them both on at the same time.
We're going to be talking with the Blues later on
and the piece well people joins the programingist and coach
of the Blues because this is the big clash coming
up tomorrow and if you want some Chiefs Brumbies Axs,
(16:05):
and we've got that for you on Saturday morning on
the All Sport Breakfast and Arona is going to join
us as well as the head coach of the Brumbies, Stephen Larkham,
so we'll be covering at all over the next couple
of days. We do Blues Crusaders now because plainly it's
on Tomorrow night and I'm not here. Can't really take
talkback on a game that's going live, but we can
(16:27):
do that now. Our eight hundred eighty ten eighty lines
are open. A couple of reason simple questions for you.
Does this represent the four best teams in the Super
Avy competition this year? Very simple. There's a fair shakedown
(16:47):
of the quality of the sides across the Tasman and
across here. What I'm nudging at here is that these
teams have been weeded out and we know that the
cream rises. This is the cream right through all of
the competition. Every round of this competition, there's been very
(17:09):
close fixtures, the odd runaway fixture, there's been some last gaffs, wins,
wins from the ends are nowhere, but it's hard to
argue against who's here, isn't it. They're the best teams
in the competition. The Blues came from nowhere, but they're
(17:29):
heading the ground running, aren't they. They've got a wet sale.
They've been imperious the last couple of days. The Chiefs
have been at the top right the way through and
the Crusaders haven't stomped and trampled over everyone. But they've
been extraordinary compared to last year, which is fair enough
because they were terrible last year and the Brumbies constantly
(17:52):
pestering the Semis in the finals. The best team over
the ditch well suited to the miserable weather over in
New Zealand. Those are the four best teams in Super Rugby.
Tell me I'm wrong or agree with me O eight
one hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open here
at news talks EB. I have other question. I have
(18:14):
oh attacked by a musician awful probably hasn't bathed for
a while. Either we've got other subjects, We've got other
topics on the same subject, or run through those shortly.
Tiktor is coming out by twenty five minutes coming up
next to your cause. I e one hundred eighty ten eighty.
After everything that's happened in Super rugby this year, this
(18:35):
is a fair representation of the strength of super rugby,
is it not? Go and argue with me, do you?
This is News Talks Eben.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
You hear it from the biggest names and sports man.
Speaker 11 (18:53):
Have your say one hundred eighty ten eighty sports Talk
or more on your whole of sports News Talk.
Speaker 2 (18:59):
ZIV on Thursday, June twelve. It is and the one
hundred eighty ten eighty lines are open. Pete wants to
know where the AB's coaches is. He's still alive. Anyone's
(19:19):
seen hiding? I hear of him. He saw him on
some social media a couple of days ago, hanging out
with Cliff Curtis, Jason Momoa and a couple other movie stars.
And then there goes a little old razor popping at
the end of it. So he's still around. He's doing
something I reckon. He's probably making quite a few notes
ahead of that all black team announcement. Trevor, this is
(19:43):
the four best teams in Super rugby. Could you argue
it's the four best teams in Super Rugby history.
Speaker 8 (19:51):
I'm an Awkland fan, even though I live in the
king Country. I've been an Awkland fan all my life
since about when Ron Williams started way back there. So
I think they're the four best teams. Yes, Auckland just
come right right at the really end, the most important
part of the year, which all coaches look forward to
(20:12):
form at this time of the year, and they're good,
good finals.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
And the key well onness. You look to the teams
in the team list, no one is completely without injury.
But in essence, the four teams that have reached the
last couple of dancers have got fully stacked quivers. They're
not carrying a bunch of broken players everywhere, and that's
probably why they're in that position.
Speaker 8 (20:39):
Well, it's couraging. Well according to mind the way I looked,
I agree with you. But you know everyone said injuries.
You always have injuries and sport. But they seemed to
come right. All their players seem to come right right
when it's needed.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Now, well Crusaders are They're they're short a couple, but
I think that's maybe one of their strongest sides. Note
to Mighty Williams, they're going to miss that tight head prop.
You're right across the other teams. They've got very strong teams,
but not a great deal of injury, so we are
getting the cream of the common I wonder what that's
down to, Trevor. I wonder why they've kicked themself fit.
Speaker 10 (21:18):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 8 (21:20):
You know, you know, I was read for years and
I always saw the players they've got. Some of them
are up and I'm really the player they could play
any kind of test match. But then you've got players
that are in the same team that you know, they've
all got to click at the same time. You know,
it's pretty hard, that's one thing. It's hard to do,
(21:42):
everyone to click at the same time.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
That's what the coach is there for. Trevor. I hope
you enjoy the entertainment over the weekend. Who have you
got tomorrow night?
Speaker 8 (21:51):
I got Awkwin.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
You should say the Blues. It's like me saying Canterbury
the Crusaders has made up of a number of different
provincial unions, so you need to call them the Blues.
And what about on on on Saturday night of the
Chief's got enough to pick themselves up again?
Speaker 8 (22:06):
Well, it was the Chief have just been the good
There was a good deal in the weekend. Just come
with White, whit Kells and Auckland. You know that was
a good deal. That was one of the big games
I've seen this year. To be fair, because they're Auckland
tackled out and Chiefs take a well just selling mistakes
at crucial times costing That's what I think. But I
(22:27):
think you've got the bestball teams. I don't mind which
one of before win, but I hope i'm the Auckland Blues.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Do all none of your mates here there, because you're
basically saying if the Brumbies win, you're okay with it.
Come on, Trevor, now, I give it all.
Speaker 8 (22:40):
I played bowls here and I Granger and there's a
plenty of White support. I'm the only Aukland supporter are there.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
That's good. When you get out here, go stop, drop
and roll and enjoy it. Trevor, thanks very much for
joining us O one hundred and eighty ten eighty is
seven thirty one get a Grahamy the four best teams
of the competition. This is a fair slice of fear
of representation, isn't it.
Speaker 7 (23:03):
By the way, First that you know today great interviews
with Matt Ted and Tom Christie to the yeah great
number sevens that war an a red of black jerseys years.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
Amazing agreed to it. It was like, can you both
them on at the same time? Though okay, actually, to
be fair, great idea. It was the mediate liaison. Maddie
down these because hey, should we get to them at
the same time. I'm like, yeah, why not, You're so
well done, Maddie, Well we need to do that again.
Speaker 7 (23:30):
Yeah, and he had good and get Ethan on a
few weeks ago to so yes in other player.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
I'm trying to get through everybody. You bit of blues,
bit of cheese, but a hurricane has been a hard
and no favorites here.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
No, I know you even though you're a good one eyed,
I know you cover your bases. But you know, I think, well,
are the four teams that are there, and here a
lot of people commenting, well, even last year we could
have the top eight, but you know, the competition is
what it is. We have four teams that you know,
it's a lot, it's a lot better Top Sex and
Top eight and yeah, and they are there, so you know,
(24:02):
the endless debate about the competition. You know, verbous one
hundred percent. I think some people are addictive to attacking
the perceived failings as Super Rugby.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
To be honest, they've been over the years. Super Rugby
has had its fair share of problems, not denying that
it's been turned around. If you can talk Jack Measley
about that, Mark Robinson had something. Whatever they've done, they've
made it a vibrant competition. There are tweaks, it needs
to still be worked on, but these things develop over time.
(24:37):
There's no spell. I feel, there's no wand being waived,
so it's a.
Speaker 7 (24:41):
Work on right, Oh exactly. Yeah, you know rugby like
our rules. It's one of the things about rugby union chat.
We've had a lot, we have a lot of changes
and I'm very fluid, Whereas you know, rival codes like
league and football have always had various changes, and so
rugby is that. There's always that debate.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
But the NRL, when something needs to change, they change
it very fast because it's basically the NRL's their competition.
There's no mucking around down with the Northern Hemisphere, so
they've got that over the game.
Speaker 7 (25:11):
I think yep, correct, you know, and on the two games,
I you know, I think they're both you know, it's
going to be it's going to be he's best on
the night. But I think the Crusaders, I think it's
not supposed to be as wet as what it was
last week, but it's going to be cold and you
know it was it was freezing last week. Actually, make
(25:31):
no bones about it. So yeah, and you know we'll
got well Jordan, a lot of us will talk about well,
but he does make a big difference. Is the leadership.
He's really you know, coming as one of David Averli's
right hand men. And the Blues are you know, there's
a bit of it's good to see a bit of
banter low. It's not really really harsh stuff. You know,
(25:52):
they've said a few things. So yeah, it's going to
be a great game and I think the Brublish Chiefs
will be a lot closer to the Chiefs are going
to red hot favorites.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
But well that that is the red hot favorites last
week too and it didn't work. I mean, that is
the kind of punch and the those you want before
a semi final. Was you look at the tip for
tat the way the Brumbies game unfolded and what they
had to deal with and they managed to climb back.
And you look at the size and the strength the
peck and rollers from both of those teams, in fact,
all of those teams. It's going to be collision heavy.
(26:24):
I suppose the winners out of this is going to
be who qualifies and doesn't lose a few players to injury.
Speaker 9 (26:28):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (26:29):
Now, you're a viewer fan of boxing, Darcy, and like
you know, there's a couple of heavyweight fights on the
weekend and that's not a bad way to put it.
Speaker 2 (26:37):
No, it's going to be great, Graham. I'm sure you'll
enjoy it. You enjoy it down there, mate. Sure you
take a swanny, maybe a pair of red bands, maybe
a wee blanky will be cold freezing out of these
four teams. And I say you could consider that these
four teams, in the fullness of history of super rugby,
(27:00):
have been the best four teams in the competition. It's
not too much of a stretch, is it. Who's dominated
When they started beat up on the Stades what was
it two thousand and three and then went through a
bit of a sinkhole until last year and everything turned
out right again. Crusaderes we know about them. We know
(27:21):
that the Chiefs have been the thorn on the side
of the Crusaders. There are thereabouts for a long time,
picked up a couple of titles, and the Brumbies are
also right up there. So this represents some fantastic teams
and some great rugby. I'd like to think teams that
have adapted particularly well. I was talking before about the
(27:42):
relative lack of injuries in these teams and maybe that's
part of the reason they've got as far as they have.
I've just looked it up. I found them all and
I apologize to the Chiefs fans because they've got so
many players out, key players maybe not, but players out.
Terrible to see Simon Parker invalid out of this as well.
(28:04):
It guy's got a huge amount of promise, but in
the chief uh No, Rangy shold a problem, but he's
not the primary halfback. Simon Parker ankle issue, Josh Lord
a concussion, Manarchy Selby Rickett, he's got a toe issue,
Liam Coomb's fabling hamstring, Anton Lennett Brown's collar bone issue.
(28:28):
He is huge in that side. We sorely saw he
missed or has been Malakai rampling hamstring Caleb but trask
or trash hamstring with an ankle and Ramaka Poi hippie
with the knee. It's quite a lot Crusaders to Mighty Williams,
Finley Brews, Tahaka and Dom Gardner. That's not bad. Blues
(28:55):
can Christy, Stephen Perl, Fitter, Rion Paul came su far
off at the Fussy and Sam Darry and the Brummies
have lost Charlie Klee, Austin Anderson, Lucky Hoop, Harry Valley
and Blake Shulp. So reasonably good Sick Bays. I'd say
(29:16):
seven thirty eight Sports talk here on news Talk z
B nineteen nine two is the text line. If you
want to tell me that this is the best four
teams in Super rugby or most the point coun to me,
call me a liar. I love to hear from you.
Oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Come on, Hurricanes fans,
(29:36):
I'm poking you with a stick. Come on, him said,
I know you back your rivalries too, amongst all of
(30:03):
these matchups looking back historically, help me with this one.
Eight one hundred eighty ten eighty and why we know
about the rivalry hewn there Crusaders and the Blues because
that steems back to blue and white hoops and red
and black from way back in the day. But NBC
(30:24):
is not quite as relevant and buoyant as it used
to be. But that has transferred across to Super Rugby.
And then the Blues fans will know that after they
got rinsed in that third one, but then they came
back in two thousand and three and rolled the Crusaders.
I think that that rivalry is rich on the ground
and it's kind of like a Mexican standoff, if you will.
(30:49):
When you've got the fact that the Bombay issue between
the Chiefs and the Blues is also vast, because not
unlike christ Church, I'm led to believe that the people
of Hamilton can't stand Aucklander's phones aren't ringing. No one's
going to argue with me on that one. So there
(31:09):
is there's a fair amount of aggression between those in
recent history says that that's well founded with what they've done.
And then you've got the Chiefs taking on the Crusaders.
And if there's any team that the Crusaders are more
freaked out about, I feel I can say this than
any other team it's the Chiefs. It's delightful, isn't it. Chiefs, Crusaders, Crusaders,
(31:36):
Blues Blues Chiefs. The list goes on. These are wonderful rivalries,
how they And then you look at the Brumbies and go, well,
they're blowing everyone's party for a while over the ditch.
They seem to be the most relevant Australian side so far.
And then you look at the playmakers across the teams
and how good they are and the most important players
(31:56):
there will Jordan plainly not the pivot, but almost as important,
more important, i'd say than the first five eighth and
of course Bowden, Barrett and Damian McKenzie. I'm referencing New
Zealand teams here playing because's the New Zealand radio show
(32:17):
they are. They're the ones that everyone's got to have
their cross here is on because if any of those
three guys perform to their best, they'll drag the whole
team up with them. Mine you've got I'm not going
to identify every number and say how powerful they are,
but you've got powerful packs, powerful front rows. You've got
(32:39):
crazy inventive runners, men who are great with the ball
in hand and great with the ball to boot. This
is what super rugby needs. This is what it's got
this entire year. Let's just hope that its reflected tomorrow
evening and on Saturday evening and we get quality games.
(33:02):
And from a Crusaders fan living in Blues Land, and
I'm genuinely nervous about what the Blues can bring to
christ Church, I really am. That's full respect to that
Blue side. No one would have picked what they did
to the Chiefs. They are peaking at the right time.
(33:22):
Coming up next on that subject, we're gonna talk to
Paul Tito, assistant coach of the Blues. He's next News Talks, Sad,
look at you, you're taking me with sports talk on
news Talks, EB. We've had a listener to the Crusaders.
(33:44):
I mustered up a blue for us as well. He's
the coach of the Blues. He look after the Fords,
is not really interested in those fancy pants. Is out back.
His name is Paul Tito and he joins us now,
good evening, Paul. I'm very well. What a game Friday.
I always talk about this. I talk about this last
week with the challenge between the Chiefs and the Blues.
(34:05):
It just notches up level. Doesn't it down to Crusadersville
in their backyard in the freezing cold against a traditional rival,
You're either freaking out or rubbing your hands together. Game.
This is what rugby is all about.
Speaker 10 (34:19):
You know, we're excited. You know, obviously looking back last week,
it was a massive challenge. Not many people gave us
a show sneaking in to sixth and heading down to
number one in Hamilton and and doing the job lake
down there. You know, no one really gave us a show,
and I'm picking most will give us no show on
Cross Each. You know what I've seen here this week
(34:41):
is excitement and energy levels are high and.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Really really.
Speaker 10 (34:48):
Really excited about heading to Cross Each to really challenge
them down on their home tef.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
What do you need to reapply from the Chiefs game,
because that was a huge turner. People moaned about the
way the quarterfinals were working and how it panned out,
but thanks to you guys, it made it very, very exciting.
So the big takeaways out of that time.
Speaker 10 (35:08):
In Chaseville, Well, I think the first thing is I
don't know if the Hurricanes were too excited about that results,
but you know what I mean, I think looking back
at our game, I felt out defense really controlled the game.
We had moments when we went down there a few
months ago that we lead points. When they got into
our twenty two was a massive focus from everyone all week,
(35:31):
and you know, their first three entries they took the
I think they only took three points, So I think
that was a real step up. You know, our defense
obviously has been going pretty good all year with the
least amount of try scored. But you know, most of
you haven't been that good in other areas and haven't
haven't been as one, you know, and then you look
(35:51):
at your defensive line out and then you look at
your scram and little things like that that can help
the defense numbers. So yeah, I felt that we were
better connected as one.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
What's been the major change to help that defensive effort?
Has it been a major tweak and attitude? What have
you looked at around that?
Speaker 10 (36:11):
Well, you know, the defense doesn't change much. You know,
you look at the key things that they bring, and
you might tweak a few things, but it comes down
to the players and the senior guys that run out
of the fence and how much you want it, how
much you want to how much time you want to
see them to spend on the ground, or how much
time you want to get up on your feet and
have that real next job focus. So you know, it
comes back down to attitude and how much you wanted
(36:34):
and you know something. The coaches box and the weekend
it wasn't the most pleasantest place, but see the boys
getting up again and working hard for each other was great.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
To see trust as well on you're insides and your outsides,
knowing that these guys are going to complete, not seecond
guessing what happens next.
Speaker 10 (36:53):
Yeah, I think you know all that stuff cohesion with
playing with the guys that you've played with a long time.
All these little things help. And you know, we've got
a pretty experience back line that dealt with things really
well last weekend, and this weekend is going to be
a total, totally different story. They play a different brand.
You know, they've got a couple of game breakers and
(37:14):
their team that that we need to take care of.
So massive challenge ahead, but one that we're excited to
heat the christ each for.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Who are they? Who are you keeping an eye on?
Where are your cross hairs?
Speaker 10 (37:25):
Hey? The number fifteen is not a bad rebby player.
You give him time in space, you know he can
cut anyone up, So you know he's definitely one that
we need to look out for. You know, their twelve players,
a massive part of their game, massive leader and their
group and it really takes these kind of games by
the scruff of the neck. So you know that was
most were we're looking at that at definitely those two
(37:47):
guys in the back line. And hey, then then up
front they've got massive amount of experience and semi final
footy and you know, we know, you know, when when
these games come to town, uh, the awards will take
a lead and you know you'll see the best out
of you know, Scott Barrett and Code Taylor. So you
(38:08):
know we're going to have to be on our game
to get down there and really take it to these voice.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
I like the way you name part of the pack,
but you're not interested in attaching a name to any
of the guys out there in the back line. Is
that deliberate? Is that just a Ford thing?
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Oh mate?
Speaker 10 (38:22):
You know, as forwards, we kind of look after one
to eight and then just try and make sure that
those other guys look after themselves.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
How much time have you spent talking discipline because you
can't really train discipline, or can you. And this is
always going to be the key when it comes to
crunch matches.
Speaker 10 (38:38):
Yeah, oh, I think we saw that on the weekend.
You know how this film was good. We gave them
not many opportunities to get access into our twenty two.
And you know you give to the crusader's voice access
into your twenty two, the bloody effishent in there, so
it's your peril. So you know we've trained it this week.
Teams set us up every week this year and they've
(39:01):
done a fantastic job and I've done that again at training.
So mate, they put pressure on us. You know, we've
got a real referee training to make sure that we're
looking at off side and all these little things that
can just give them exus to us.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Who's the referee, Paul?
Speaker 10 (39:17):
Well, we normally have Angus maybe he's linked to us,
but we had Todd from Maybe so we're grateful to
come in and give us heed.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Well, I say that because he used to give me
a hand as well. He produced my show for a
couple of years. In fact, it was my boss before
he disappeared to be a full time referee. Oh he's fine, mate,
He's very understanding and he can deal with talent if
he could call us that in a very relaxed and
calm way. It's talk about timing, Paul. You probably didn't
(39:46):
want to cut it this close. It was a pretty
rotten start to the season. But it looks like you're
peeking right at the right time. Not not by design,
but it's working now and you've got pretty much a
full quiver to pick from, so things are falling into
place for you.
Speaker 10 (40:04):
Yeah, you could mostly looking like that. You know, we've
we've certainly chugged along this year. You know, we have
been great for most of the comp but you know,
it comes down to these big moments and these big games,
and we're bloody excited. I think that's the main thing.
And the boys there's some energy around the place that
you know, we're excited about the child's ahead and getting
(40:26):
down to crosses.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
You could make this the last time the Crusaders play
at the Orange theory lean to before next year they
changed to a proper stadium. Does that count much that
you might be able to put them away at home?
Speaker 10 (40:41):
Well, not really, but it is not the greatest spot
to go to be fair, so it'd be quite nice
to you know, to finish finish with a win down there.
Speaker 2 (40:48):
I'm not going to disagree with that one. Paul Tiitor,
thank you so much for joining us. Wishing you the
best on Friday night, go there, get stuck in one night.
