Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Hello, six minutes half seven it is. It's a Thursday night,
nineteen the June twenty twenty five. My name is Darcy
Waldgrave and here here it is. We got sport for it.
From now through till eight o'clock tonight. Your opportunity to
ring through, express your opinions, Argue with me, agree with me,

(01:03):
ignore me completely. But we can take nine two nine
two ZBZB standard text charge. It does apply. I want
you to call eight hundred and eighty ten eighty talk
back radio, not talk at radio, though sometimes you're surprised
the way I behave. We've got a couple of guests
for you of an evening looking forward to both men.

(01:26):
We're going to be joined by Crusader's assistant coach, Ryan
Crotty for All Black, former Crusader for MCN Tabby's only
been in the coaching roll. Wow, one New York minute
and there we are on the CUSP boarding yet another title.
Talk to Ryan all about what that means, what it entails,
and then we'll look forward in a talkback situation to

(01:48):
the final of Super Rugby Pacific twenty twenty five. You
get a chance on Saturday after Baboon to have a
chat with Jason Pine. He's doing a show from the
rock Pool in the Anti christ Church as a lead up,
a build up to that game. I'm sure he'll take
your calls. Will to take your course tonight and what
might be at your chance to finally express what you

(02:11):
want to do around the Super Rugby Final. I've had
an epiphany. I'm going to share that with you later
on in the piece as to what the ingredient is
that has made the special source that's been slathered all
over Super Rugby so inviting and so tasty. What is

(02:36):
that ingredient and what is it for you?

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Eight hundred ten at you know mine is, but not yet.
Later in the piece, towards the end of the program,
we catch up with a guy called Greg Nickel. This
has been the phenoms story of the last week. Who
is He was the Blacksticks men's coach field hockey. They
have had a ridiculous week, a stunning week, and it

(03:01):
looks like it's going to carry on over the weekend.
We will talk about the success after essentially lying dormant
for the best part of a year, they've come back
and they're beating people all over the shop. So we'll
talk to him about that later on the piece up first, though,
Ryan Crotty joins the program before we do any of that.
We're going to indulge in a whole.

Speaker 4 (03:21):
Lot of this sort today.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
My best Steve Rice voice on that in Sports Today,
War's utility. Well he is, isn't he right? War's utility.
Kurt Caple had an absolute blind last night in Origin Too.
He basically sh the folk who moaned about a selection
because its NROL tackle completion rate as well it's pants.

(03:45):
Maroons coach Billie Slater had no idea though he didn't
even care. The Queenslanders squared the series with a stunning victory.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
A bit of talk around the number of mistackles on
his stat sheet. I actually didn't know that until I
read it in the paper. Probably goes to show that
I don't look at numbers. I look at habits and players.
I look at their actions and how they contribute to
their footy team.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Now that is odd from a coach, isn't it. I
get what he's saying. He looks at the actions, but
if most of his actions are incomplete tackles. You think
it plays some addp doesn't matter. He was astonishing and
that game was something else's origin always his. Dame Lydia
Co is striving to become only the eighth female golfer
to complete the coveted Grand Slam in the LPGA. That's

(04:31):
four out of five Majors victories.

Speaker 6 (04:35):
She is, I feel like I could should win, Like
the type of golf courses we play. If I saw
Meg Mallin and Beth Daniel yesterday and said, hopefully I
can join you at the champions dinner someday and have
a dinner menu curated by me.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
And she teas off at the USPGA Championship tomorrow morning.
Crusader's rat Cody Taylor isn't thinking about his team's outrageous
recording home Super Rugby playoffs after suggestions that the unbeaten
Street is a burden.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
We heard learn say yet the other week, and that
definitely ruffled a few feathers in my box.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
That's a proud record to have.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
But not thinking about that this week.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
I'm sorry, boss, you are thinking about it. You literally
just told us, and former silver Fern Katrina Are has
spoken of the added extras afforded to Oka netballers.

Speaker 7 (05:33):
All that adds up, and especially when you're talking about
one percent or two percenters when it comes to an
elite athlete, those are huge and I think you can
see it week in week out. It doesn't make the
competition boring because everyone is so strong, not a heck
of a lot of injuries.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
They've got resources, high quality competition. Looks like the black
dress is the only thing keeping our athletes here. So
you know why they do it. And that's sport today. Right,
Let's talk some rugby Crusaders taking on the Chiefs. It's
live on Gold Sport and that's five part seven on
Saturday night. The Crusaders at there, well, if you're being polite,

(06:12):
you call it a grand old stadium, their grand old
lady that's worked its way through the light. Or if
you're being rude, you can say that dump that they
dare call a stadium. It's so it's gone, we'd like
to think. And we're joined now by assistant coach. All
of the crusaders up against the Chiefs. Is that name
is Ryan Craddy? You it Ryan, good at talk and

(06:34):
great to have you on. What's it like being involved
in a coaching capacity in a final, when you've spent
so much time prepping for these games as a player,
how much more removed is it?

Speaker 4 (06:47):
It's the same but different?

Speaker 8 (06:50):
Yeah, yes, I guess obviously as a coach it's just
making sure that the boys have got everything they need
and prepared as Bessie can for the big game. And
as a player, I think your focus is a lot
narrower and with your role and what you need to
bring an execute and this, I guess the space you
need to get in for to build yourself up to

(07:12):
go and perform in a big game.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
But I think obviously as the coach you're a lot more.

Speaker 8 (07:17):
Spreading, not quite as as narrow in your focus and
looking after the whole group or are those those those
critical pots and the positions you're looking after? So but
not same, bit different but still very special, very special.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Is it any less stressful or does it just add
more now that you've got so many more responsibilities.

Speaker 8 (07:40):
I think if you you realized pretty quickly as a
coach you don't have the same kind of control or influence.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
As you do as a player. So I don't know.

Speaker 8 (07:50):
I thought last week I thought I was I was
pretty kind of relaxed heading into it, but then kind
of game time rolled around and it was the nerves
started to kick in.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
Is the is the intensity of the match went on.

Speaker 8 (08:05):
So you might have to ask me that after the
game or during the game on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Well, you'd be feeling helpless, wouldn't you, more than anything
when you're sitting there, going, I actually can't get in
there and clean someone out or have a crack at
the ref.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
You can't.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
So that lack of control on the night must be
very frustrating for a player like yourself.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
Well, I used to get a lot like that as
a player.

Speaker 8 (08:30):
You know, if you'd come off the field, you know,
and you're sitting on a bench watching there the last
ten to fifteen minutes, that's all you in the stands
with an injury, that's when the real kind of stress
used to cack on, because you're just so invested in
what you're doing as a player, and you care so
deeply about getting the results you work so hard for

(08:50):
and you're not out there influencing it directly. But no,
as a coach, I think you really do trust. You
trust the boys and because you see how hard they
work and you said, the way they prepare and you
know how good they are, so you trust them in
those those pressure moments. So I think that's the main
thing I've probably learned more as a coach is just

(09:12):
not that I didn't trust when I was a player.
But when you're working with these guys day and day out,
you see how see how much it means to them,
you see how good they are, and yeah, you just
ready to back them and trust them.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
So how much has your thought process changed from being
a younger player to a player that's finally hung his
boots up to being a coach around the expectations of
the coach player relationship.

Speaker 8 (09:38):
How's that developed, Ryan, I'm still probably figuring out, mate.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
I wouldn't say I'm an expert.

Speaker 8 (09:43):
I've only been coaching for I don't have enough to
being call it coaching for four or five months.

Speaker 4 (09:49):
It's a cool I'm in a cool space.

Speaker 8 (09:52):
I think I'm having played with a heck of a
lot of these guys as soon as as recent as
five six months, seven months ago, so you still got
that friendship, that connection, genuine care. So it's it's quite
easy to that that that relationship, I fear is really

(10:13):
genuine from my own So it's just about, you know,
being being my being myself and being authentic and doing
my best for the guys and whatever space they need.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
They're your friends. Do they even listen to you?

Speaker 4 (10:29):
Some of them do, some of them probably not. The
boys have been awesome.

Speaker 8 (10:34):
They've been really, really supportive, and they've the coaches have
been so supportive everyone. I'm really grateful for how I've
been treated coming into the environment of a different capacity,
So I'm really lucky.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
But the guys are great.

Speaker 8 (10:48):
They I think they respect the way I see and
understand the game, and I guess my rugby I Q
and they're only too happy to have a conversation and
bounce ideas.

Speaker 4 (10:59):
And now the guys has been great.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
The Chiefs clear and present danger. They have had a
fantastic gear in saying that they've been at the Final.
I've lost count how many times they've been there over
the last few years and got the bridesmaids bouquet, so
they'd be coming at this like a ball of the gate.
You expect something quite extraordinary from the Chiefs with all

(11:23):
that disappointment built up.

Speaker 8 (11:26):
Yeah, I unfortunately know what that feels like as a
as a young crusader, the early part of I guess
of myself, Toddy Toddy and the coach's office as well,
Our early part of our careers came so close so
many times, and you just know how much that builds
the desire to.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
To go that one more so the context of their history. Regardless.

Speaker 8 (11:48):
As a final, you know both teams are going to
be extremely hungry. It'll be an absolute cracker. So the
boys are preparing accordingly. We're excited, we're we're grateful for
another week together and grateful we get to send off the.

Speaker 4 (12:04):
Old girl.

Speaker 8 (12:06):
Scaffold stadium off as we put in a performance that
would do it justice.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, the Orange theory lean to as I like to
call it. Next year is going to be huge for you.
So you would have been pouring over the tape, looking
at your computer, so on and so forth. What do
you know about the chiefs where they're tender underbeally lies?
Have you found a space to actually dominate to maybe
do something in there?

Speaker 8 (12:32):
I think we have to trust our game, trust what
we've been doing well all a year and off weeks.
What we know, you know, our game under pressure, then
that's that's what we can control.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
We can't can't control the chiefs.

Speaker 8 (12:45):
Chiefs, we respect them and we prepare accordingly, and we
used we do our homework, and we know they've got
some exciting talent. They're a very very good team. But
like we say, we can control what we can control,
and we prepare and relentless with that, and we just
be excited for the opportunity to go and one of

(13:06):
our people on Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
If you want to control somebody, it'll be Damien McKenzie.
Good luck with that, But you put a master plan
around him, you're opening up holes everywhere. That is a
fine balance for the coaching stuff. Look, recognize what you
can do. But if you can't look up and look
across the other side with your nuts, aren't you so
you know what threats they bring. You're aware of that

(13:27):
and how you can maybe counter those or close those down.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
Ohe demas an exceptional player. They've got threats right across
the parking.

Speaker 8 (13:36):
You did right, but we've had some outstanding if it's
defensively this year, I think Toddy's doing.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
A great job preparing our group and Mate, you look
at their amount of tackles we've had to make on.

Speaker 8 (13:48):
Numerous occasions where we know we I think that shows
how much the script cares and how much we we
want to work for each other, and how proud we
are of pulling the jersey on. So when nour finals,
you need to go another year, so the great to
see what we made of on Saturday night.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
And one last thing, Ryan Croddy and thanks so much.
And the listener's frequent listens to this program are probably
tired of me saying this, but tough it's what I'm
leaning on at the moment. Many years ago I had
Todd Blackadder on the program talking about the final and
this is against the Chiefs and what does it come
down to me? And he said one thing, Darcy, discipline.

(14:29):
And I got the text the next day from Todd
Blackadder after the victory saying, discipline first and foremost for
you guys.

Speaker 8 (14:36):
Right, we've previewed that we needed to be better from
the weekend.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
We've been pretty good so far this year.

Speaker 8 (14:44):
I felt, well, you know, we've built a bit of
momentum for the middle part.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
Of the season, and.

Speaker 8 (14:50):
You look through all the games all over the world
at the moment, the team that's the most disciplined on
the right side of the penalty account they are, they're
winning games, so we have to be squeaky clean on
Saturday and just trusts. I think if we trust, then
those little penalties guys going out of system and things
like that. We we trust and trust in our game,

(15:14):
trust each other, and then those penalties are we should
be on the right side of the ledge of.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
There no need for the DMO. We've got the breakdowns
on Sports Talk call oh.

Speaker 4 (15:25):
News Talk Zip.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Sports Talk on News Talks EB. That was Ryan Karty
from cantab former why not for me still down there
former Crusaders represented a former representative of the All Blacks.
Current assistant coaches only just climbed into the role A
lot on us plate heading on into the game on

(15:51):
Saturday Night Live and free on gold Sport five past seven.
That gets under way. The special source. Excuse me for
getting all McDonald's on this. I couldn't help myself. And
then there's no way, shape or form any indoors to
that branch of food pedlers. Okay, there is a special

(16:14):
source that has been slatted all over Super Rugby that's
made it awfully tempting right the way throughout the year.
Is it the special sources. Is it the actual ingredients
in Super Rugby Pacific this year? Well, I know what
it is.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
For me.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
It is that there's a number of ingredients in this,
but there is a core ingredients part of this, this recipe, this,
this special sauce that's made this Super Rugby season so impressive.
So moorish, I'll share mine with you. I'll share your

(16:56):
mind if you show me yours. What is it? What
has it done?

Speaker 4 (17:02):
It?

Speaker 2 (17:02):
What for you is the absolute key of Super Rugby
because if you're going to bring up and tell me
it hasn't been a great success by it means you're
more than welcome to I argue with you, but that's okay.
Have you texted nineteen ninet two zbzb and argue that's fine,
that's okay. But there was something in the water, something
in the salt, something in the meat. Patia what it is?

(17:24):
But I got a rough idea and I'm going to
tell you what it did shortly. But I'd like you
to tell me yours. Whether you're a Chiefs fan, a
Hurricanes fan, heart of his fan, Mawina Pasifika Fiji and
drew it, so on and so forth, what has made
Super rugby so inviting, so engaging. So Morris, you tell

(17:46):
me one hundred and eighty ten eighty three phone number
nation wide, and forget we're talking hockey. Later on the piece,
we're joined by the Blacksticks men's field hockey coach Greek
Nickel on their out rageous time over the last few weeks, well, sorry,
the last week, the last week over in Malaysia. I'll
give some detail, Matt later in the to give us

(18:07):
a call. Oh, one hundred and eighty ten eighty, let's
make like food critics. Tell me what is the special
ingredient in Super Rugby Pacific twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (18:31):
Forget the riffs call you make the call on eight
eighty ten eighty sports talk on your home of sports.
Who use talk sip talks it.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
Ooh, long weekend at seven twenty seven gives me the
opportunity to issue my tried and true public service announcement.
If you're lucky enough to own a batch or you
know someone who has one, and you're currently driving there
wherever you are in our phone moty, even if you're

(19:10):
just going to go and visit the rally somewhere for
the long weekend, please I implore you make like little fonsies,
keep calling the car overtaking on that blind corner, driving
up someone's backsite. It's not going to make any difference.
You might get there ten minutes earlier, doesn't matter. Please

(19:31):
please drive responsibly. And if you're sitting in the car,
listen this right now, and old mates at the wheel
driving like a hoon, point at him. Right there. I
done it, got that off my chest, which is good.
Seven twenty eight, a sports took on news Talk z B.
I asked the question about the secret ingredient. What is
actually in Super Rugby Pacific this year that has made

(19:54):
it such a compelling competition. Now you think it's boring
or it's no good, or you don't like rugby, there's
no point answering because you don't care. Right so that
the fans what's twisted? What's that one little taste? I've gone, Oh,
I know what it is, well, I know what it
is for me. Anyway, I'll share that with you soon,

(20:16):
but I want to hear from you. I eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty. It's been the tapping point for you.
I went through a couple of texts for you. Super
Rugby has been so good. All the finals were sold
out and it's been different two to three teams in

(20:37):
the finals every year. Wait, what, don't drink the call aid, Darcy, Paul.
I'm not drinking the call aid. I'm telling you what
I think and in response to the texts and the
calls and the interest that I know is there because
I'm kind of at a call face. It's a much

(20:58):
better competition and the vibrancy has carried on. So no
call aid, Paul, just an opinion, which is what you're
and thanks for sharing. Nineteen ninety ZB standard text charge
does apply. Anythinks it's close contests okay. Another Texas says

(21:19):
it's the Australians in pacifica being better. Okay, I've got
something else. I want to hear it from you, Ellen.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
I see.

Speaker 9 (21:28):
Look, it's got to be the resurgence of the Australians.
I think that's made it interesting this year. I'm picking
them to take the letters low and I'm picking them
to beat the lines, so that's why I think it'll happen.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
I don't know, beating the Lions is necessarily an impressive
thing to do. I've never really rated that that composite
team much. I mean, they make a big The best
thing about the Lions is they bring a whole of
a beer drink and palms over and we can take
the money off them. I mean, yeah, they've had some
times over here, and they've had some okay wins, but
really it's it's more of a myth than a rugby team,

(22:02):
isn't it. Yeah.

Speaker 9 (22:04):
I think the Australians are back though, and that's got
to be good for world rugby, doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (22:08):
Not absolutely, it does so. But Ellen, to me, this
is not an addition to a recipe. This is something
they've taken out of the recipe to make it taste
to you. And what is that? The Rebels? Yeah, Rebel's gone.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
I think.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (22:27):
But I think there's also a few all blacks struggling
for their positions as well, which is good, you know.
I think Scott Barrett's got to be a bit worried,
you know, and I think there's a few others like
him that there's some good young players coming through. And
that's also a bit of a secret there as well,
I think.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
And these are all good reasons, they're not my primary one,
but thanks very much for ringing through. Elan and letting
us know, and I implore you to do that yourself.
Eighty ten eighty. There is something and something in the
gumbo in the payout that works really well.

Speaker 10 (23:05):
What is it?

Speaker 2 (23:07):
We're joined now by a self confessed proud whack up
on man Sean. Good on you, how are you?

Speaker 11 (23:13):
I'm very good, thank you, Darcy, and I think the
resurgence are super Rugby this year is four main factors.
The first of like to discuss as the Australians teams.
We have officers over in Australia, my company, I'm over
there Quota, but they've been working hard behind the scenes
to rebuild their club structure and develop a feeder pattern.
You've got the you've got a better quality of coaches.

(23:35):
I think that's where it starts, is at the back office.
In the front office. In combination the rebels, I think
was diluting the game. You put the rugby and the
core recruitment areas. That's an advantage.

Speaker 2 (23:46):
So we subtracted the rebels all they did it themselves
and that has definitely boosted the competition definitely.

Speaker 11 (23:55):
I think I think it was just too it was
too much of a stretch and I think Australian needs
to cut its losses and consentrate on the resources that's
going to make their game better. They're developing better coaches
coming true, and I think that they've got to try
to develop the same sort of development for Keslock, Murray,
Mixed and some of those other you know local programs

(24:15):
over here. Those rugby academies were good. I believe also
that there's been a resurger. I can't put my finger
on it, but thought I was always a Kidow NBC fanatic,
but super rugby wane and it's come back for some
reasons come back. There's this feeling about the Chiefs Crusaders
match and I'm amping for it. I'm going to have
my bell. I'm stuck in Auckland, but I'm pre that,

(24:36):
but I'm going to be ringing it proudly and going
from there. I think also there seems to be a
lack of other product. There's been an unusual year that
leagues going okay, but there's been some sporting failure. I
think Rugby's is by default that there's been people drawn
to it.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
You show them because the Worries have been playing the
house down this year and they've taken.

Speaker 11 (24:57):
Ill with the exception of the worry with the worries
of mine. But I think soccer and if the other
games have been relatively mediocre, the Breakers have had an
o case season. I think people are refocusing on a
winter sport this year as as rugby. I'm aorious fan too,
but I think there's been a number of factors. But
the Australian game has improved. I can cur with the
Lions all we I remember years ago in hospitality I

(25:20):
was a student. All they did was basically spend money.
They I don't think actually watched the game, so they
know they're going to get their rerens kicked. But I'm packing.
Theized is to get up this year over the Lions,
and I think it's going to be I'd like to see.
My dream is to have South Africa back in the competition.
I know, not just to be it's free. It's very difficult,
but I do miss that that that ordeal of going

(25:41):
over there and playing that that's my personal opinion.

Speaker 2 (25:43):
Brilliant and that's what we want on the program. Sean
wishing you the best for you, your cow bell and
your Mighty White couple bunch or a part but not
all of the chiefs carry on with the calls. Now, popery,
how are you yeah.

Speaker 3 (25:58):
I'm good to thanks starting, how are you yeah?

Speaker 11 (26:00):
And not so bad?

Speaker 3 (26:00):
It was out ah. I'm just setting to talk about
the Super Rugby and what I or my opinions on it.
I'm a proud Cannbury supporter. I've been a proud Canary
supportive for Crusaders.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
I should say thank you very much, well corrected for
a few years.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
And however, I actually come down to cross Church to
live about thirty odd years ago. So when I first
came down here, I was a staunch Auckland supporter, and
over the last few years I've seen Auckland just dwindle
in their plays. And so I've been here in cross

(26:39):
Church now for a number of years. I think I'm
going to switch colors, which was one or so. Now
I'm not the cast al Fino member from my family
because I've taken on the supporting the Crusaders. However, I
always get to talk with my family around around rugby

(27:01):
and we've always agreed on one thing was to bring
it back to the grass through see. You know, when
Canterbury had Canterbury players, Auckland had Auckland players, and there
was none of us to and pro to go and
get experience or to you know, for the skills and
all that sort of thing. You know, I'm really looking

(27:23):
forward to tomorrow's game.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
Against Saturday's games a day off, Petty, watch yourself, you
jump in the gun. Hey look, there's a really good
article and you see in here written by mate Gregor
Paul around the building of teams from internally and externally
and some teams that have actually made it work, like
the Crusaders and like the Chiefs. You might want to

(27:45):
grab that and have a read. And thanks very much
for your cool Doug highday.

Speaker 12 (27:53):
Just on Super. The simple ingredient that's made it so
much more enjoyable to me is the refinement of the
rules speeding up that speed us up to play, but
also the application of the rules by the referees. This

(28:14):
letting the tackle the tackled man free rolling off the
ball very strict. It's made the game marvelous.

Speaker 2 (28:23):
When did you last hear a complain about the breakdown?
Because that used to happen every thirty seconds way back.
Now you don't hear about it anymore.

Speaker 4 (28:30):
Do you?

Speaker 12 (28:31):
And reset scrums and all that nonsense. It's all gone
and it's a great game again, and thanks.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Very much for calling all that because I agree and
I think the way it's been policed by the refereeing
staff has been great. They've been given an edict by
Super Rugby saying, hey, don't get over involved in yourself,
leave the temos out of it. Let's just ref the
game as you see it and rock it on. And
even though it's become a little more intense in the

(29:03):
last week or so, when we had Jack Mesley, the
CEO of Beyond the beginning of the week, he said, look,
the weather's worse and there's more on these games, so
the intensity is up, so you're going to get classes
that might have to be looked at. We're not done
anything more as far as what the referees are required.

Speaker 12 (29:20):
To do exactly. It's been first clash awesome.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Glad I've enjoyed it, dud, thanks very much for calling
through its seven at thirty seven. You know now to Graham,
I knew Graham you love the Ryan Krowddy interview. I
wasn't like thinking about you when I was doing it,
but I knew you'd enjoy it.

Speaker 13 (29:38):
You know, may now are you yeah, yeah, very good.
May it's some good easy had Ethan Blackadder on and
Tom Christy and Matt Tide and now Ryan Krokey.

Speaker 2 (29:46):
So no, well, it's because the Crusaders have been incredibly
accessible right the way throughout the year and if people
want to say to me, where are all your Chiefs guys, well,
don't shoot the messenger. It's hard to bring that content
when it's almost impossible to get it. You know that
the head coach of the Chiefs did some media on
Monday and that's it. Team wasn't even name Then what's

(30:09):
that all about?

Speaker 13 (30:11):
Yeah, that's I'm actually surprised to hear that. But yeah,
that's not good. I mean it's not Yeah, because these
people want them to listen. They want to listen to them,
they want to hear what Clayton and Mellen's like to say.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Yeah, well I got I got David Hill on the
show on on Saturday morning, right, assistant coach of the Chiefs.
That's talk about was great and see v Reese is
going to join us as well. Oh nice, But it's
been difficult. It's difficult, and it's it's not an easy
thing to do to try and get content out of
that franchise. Sorry, I hate to say it anyway, what's up?

Speaker 13 (30:47):
Sorry, that's fair enough. No, you're at the cutting edge,
you know, you're the one who knows the quota of
what who's available and not from everything. And you know,
I just thought the games. I mean, obviously I'm from
a subjective level of Crusaders playing better, a lot better.
But I think the game, that last call is right

(31:08):
about the refereeing and the way the teams have adapted.
They've I think they've all done a lot of homework.
You know, they've really swatted up over the summer and
you know it hit the ground running in terms of
the way they're playing the game. And I think there's
been good buying from all the teams and and there's
been there's been a huge shots, you know, shock results

(31:28):
and people. You've had people at the bottom knocking people
off orphans. Once that happens, you know, that's what happens
in the Premier League and in the NRL, isn't it,
which you follow a lot too. So yeah, that was good.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
There's a lot to like. Still, no one's hit on
the reason. I believe this has been a special tournament.
And I will let you know, in time, in time,
I at some stage now at eight o'clock otherwise. Yeah,
I said I'm gone till Saturday morning. It's not as
complex as you mind think it is. It's actually very simple,

(32:01):
and it's long overdue, and I think Scott Robinson's had
a lot to do with it. I don't know this,
but I think so. I'll let you know.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
All right soon and then.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
We're going to talk about a hockey black Sticks men's
coach Greg Nicol. These guys haven't played for a year
and they've wanted over a tournament Malaysia thirty plus degrees,
ninety percent humidity, and they've won every game against three
Asian competent and they're playing again this weekend against Korea
to get to the final to defend the Nation Cup.

(32:36):
It's crazy. We'll find out out with Greg Nickel later.
The New Storks there b, this is Kendrick Lamar. There

(32:56):
you go. I'm getting scored by the youth. That yeah,
really Top twenty seven forty four sport Stalk Keren News
to there the douggie. How are you?

Speaker 10 (33:10):
I see, long time mate, it's been a long time.

Speaker 2 (33:14):
Look I what's been a long time Dougie.

Speaker 10 (33:19):
Well, the last time I spoke to you was about
ten years ago. Eight years ago.

Speaker 2 (33:24):
Oh wow, so you stunned on still year. Is that
what you're saying?

Speaker 10 (33:27):
No, no, I no, mate, You're you're one of the
You're one of the reasons I rang up to be honest,
I think I think off the field. I think in
terms of media. I think the woman journalists, the woman uh,
the ladies on the end of the microphones after the game,
during the game, pre game. I think they've added an

(33:50):
absolute professional uh attitude towards presentation. I think that that
the rugby shows during the week have improved immensely. I
think the subject matter has been it makes you want
to listen even more. I think that the advent of

(34:16):
Addie Severe playing for the Pacific colin side has drawn
immense amount of interest in the game. I think that
it's really open New Zealand rugby supporter's eyes up to
what can happen when we bring our Pacific island nations

(34:38):
into a competition like we have. I think that Smid
going to Australia and creating an atmosphere for Australian players
to reconvent themselves and expect themselves like they were in
the eighties. He's done a great job there in light

(34:59):
of the South Africans who aren't here with us anymore.
I think the atmosphere with in the game has lifted
to a point where, even though we've got issues with
Robinson Mark Robinson off the field and in his CEO
status there, I think that the game itself has been

(35:22):
able to on a spectator's point of view, You've got
more and more people watching. I think that the the
added event of the Warriors, the AFC Auckland soccer side,
the basketball teams, it all adds to the punter being

(35:44):
able to watch different sports and look forward to their
own individual sports. And I just think that's that they
are some of the reasons that the game has come
back towards at the moment, and you've got a great
final this Saturday. The bluesman't good enough. I hope that
the Brumby's could have done something, but they just they
are about a year away. So so you know, let's

(36:07):
look forward to another great Yunix year.

Speaker 2 (36:09):
We certainly hope so do you don't be a stranger
the great to hear from you again after such a
long time, Have I got time to actually tell you
what I think it is. I'll do it really quickly.
Here's what it is. The Rugby Union and the All
Blacks have not leaned on the super teams and said,
you're an All Black, you need a week off. You're

(36:29):
an All Black, you need a week off. You don't
have to start late because you're an All Black, you're
not playing. They've actually left it in the hands of
the franchises to look after the health and well being
of their own players. So what have we got. We've
got the best players in the country playing in the
best competition against each other. And what do your things happened?
We've got a fantastic product. And I think Robertson got

(36:51):
sicker bend deal these cards with the rest in rotation,
and now he's there. He said, we're not doing that anymore.
You guys run your own teams and look at what
we've got. That's the ingredient. We've actually got the best
players in the country playing the game. Thank you. They've

(37:17):
had an astonishing run. They have the Black Cats men's team.
They sat down for a year, they've come back for
the Nation's championship and they have won three consecutive games.
Two of those games they have come back from huge
deficits to win OWL. And we're joined now by Greg Dixon.
He's the head coach, excuse me of the black Caps, Greg,

(37:42):
how's it going good? What a week it's been for
the Black Sticks And it's kind of flown under the
radar because basically the means Black Sticks have been inactive
for the best part of the year. What a comeback.

Speaker 14 (37:53):
Yeah, it's good to be back on the turf. You know,
we hadn't played a game since Paris formal test match.
We've obviously had some camps and stuff, but yeah, good
to be back on the international stage. And you know,
three wins from three is a good up.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Not only back, but back with a bang. You managed
to dispatch Japan. But those last couple of games, what
I don't know what what's with your slow starts and
your late comebacks? Because up against Malaysia, what were you
trailing three zip and then you scored like was it
four goals in the last eight minutes to win, And
then you did the same against Pakistan behind three to one,

(38:28):
four to three again, So please tell me you're not
going to carry on with that come semi final time.
It's too scary, bro.

Speaker 14 (38:33):
Yeah, hopefully we can we can score a few goals
first in the semifinals, but you know, when you're in Asia,
in these conditions, anything can happen. It's it's sort of
one of those tournaments where it's hasn't just been US.
I think France were five to one down against Korea
and won six'. Five So africa with fall all down
Against wales and drew four.

Speaker 4 (38:53):
All so it's sort of because of the. Conditions it's about.

Speaker 14 (38:57):
Thirty two thirty three every, day eighty five ninety percent,
humidity so you have these waves of momentum in the
game and you to make sure that you take advantage
of the.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
Waves and that says a lot for the fitness of the.
Team even though you, said haven't had a ball and
anger in quite some, time but painly a lot of
them out Of, europe, right they are actually in really
good nick because to provide that late in that temperature and,
humidity that says a lot about what these guys have
been doing in their off season or in the season In.

Speaker 14 (39:27):
Europe, YEAH i think both physical fitness but also you,
know just a little bit of mental toughness and a
bit of, ticker you. Know so that's been the that's
been really. Pleasing you, know threele down or three one
down doesn't. Matter the boys just go back to work
and you know we've managed to get the, results which is.

Speaker 2 (39:44):
Awesome how do you train grit and resilience like? That
this is just SOMETHING i don't suppose you can train for,
that can? You it's just inherent in the. Players, oh
probably a bit of, both you.

Speaker 14 (39:54):
Know some of it's you, know guys who've grown up
with that mindset their whole, life either through their schooling
or their parenting or anything like.

Speaker 4 (40:02):
That but you, know we try and recreate the.

Speaker 14 (40:05):
Pressure we try and re create the circumstances that we're
going to be going. To if you can recreate that
in training enough, times then you can you can build
that gritain.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
Resilience, yet so you've Got korea coming up in the semi,
Final you Expecting greg to apply the same, philosophy the
same shape around that.

Speaker 14 (40:25):
Fix, well, YEAH i mean our pool was we played
Three asian teams in our pool and we've got another.
One so they're going to play a very similar style
to what we've come up. Against where they're going to
be very compact in defense and they're going to try
and counterteck against. Us so you, know the formula is
not going to be that much, different But i'd obviously
like to get up in the game and control the

(40:47):
game a little bit better in the first.

Speaker 2 (40:48):
Half so you're surprised about how quickly this team's actually
gelled considering WHAT i don't know what the percentage is
a lot over In, europe a handful over here and.
Elsewhere that's great, COACHING i might add to get them
all on the same.

Speaker 14 (41:00):
Page, yeah, YEAH i guess that's the biggest challenge when
we decentralized like, that as making sure there's a lot
we do a bit of, work quite a lot of work,
Online we do quite a bit of work between. Tours
obviously this one's been a long. One but and then
just trying to build this, system you, know make sure
that any new players who are coming in that they
know how we play before they come, in so that

(41:23):
filters down to the regional.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
Programs it, does and talking about knowing what you're going to,
do you have pretty tough team to scout because haven't been.
Playing do you think there's an element of surprise and
what you've done against these.

Speaker 4 (41:35):
Teams yeah, MAYBE.

Speaker 14 (41:37):
I mean this tour for, us we didn't we didn't
change a heap of what we did last. Year there's
probably like two or three key things that we've adjusted
and tried advance Since. Paris but the other teams know
that we're going to plan an attacking, brand.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Right and you've got this Is Nation's, cup so you won,
this but then you decided not to go up to
the next level or to, play AND i don't Think
france did, Either so you've been basically dormant for an
Entire so just summarize for the listeners what victory if
this actually, occurs what that means for The Black sticks

(42:13):
and the wider.

Speaker 4 (42:14):
Picture.

Speaker 14 (42:15):
Yeah, WELL i mean we we wanted last year as
the first fih tournament we had won in a, while
so you, know going back to backward would be. Awesome,
obviously winning it gives us a chance to talk about
whether pro league is an option. Again the reality of
pro league is that it's it's a very expensive, exercise

(42:35):
and so we'll left To obviously we've got a win
to get into that conversation, again so we're not going
to start having those conversations yet.

Speaker 2 (42:42):
And thanks very much for not hanging up on. Me Greg. Nickel,
there how DO i get that so? Wrong i've already
gone on the math That ikey, Break HAVEN'T i all?
Played or what you wanna call? It that's the Black Sticks.
Hockey to get the name, Right Greg, NICKEL i didn't,

(43:04):
SWEAR i just bore, no it slipped. Out Greg, nickel
head coach of the uber successful currently Black sex And You.
