Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talk zed B.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Why hello there, welcome on sports Talk. I'm Darcy Waldegrave
through a ten eight o'clock tonight. We're talking sports and
the aim of the show funny there. Ones that will
be open after our first guest are eight hundred eighty
ten eighty three phone number nation wide. You'd like to

(00:53):
join in, I'd love to hear from you. You can text
nine to nine two. That is z b z B
standard text charge does apply. Why don't email me? Let's
have a crack that as well, Darcy Atnewstalk zb dot
co dot nz. That I'll do. I could talk about Instagram,
Darcy on sport, I could talk about I'm not going

(01:15):
to least of gas. Twitter probably the best thing they've
ever done from a mental health quite frankly. Right, Moving forward,
coming up on the program this evening, it's all about
rugby League. Two rugby league stories are floating about. Well,
one is not really a story, it's a it's a
it's ourry tale of injury and unfortunately one of our

(01:38):
bright young stars has been wiped out by Felis Cavusi
He's gone for six weeks as Jacob Laban, yet he
only gets stood down the transgressor for two weeks. Grossly
unfair or about right. We'll talk about that. We'll talk
about what has to lift the Warriors out of their slump.

(02:00):
I can say slump. Four losses, six games, couple of
buys in there as well. Things aren't looking good. They
could have got away with it. They could it, but
they didn't over the weekend and maybe that would have
masked some of the issues the team has. They've got
the Bulldogs coming up this weekend and they've really got
to lift The team is out. I'll give you that

(02:20):
team sooner rather than later, I'm sure. Also today in
Rugby League News, I said, Graham Low, you can't keep
a good ex administrator or coach down, now, can you.
There was a thought from peterveland Is that well, maybe,
just maybe Origin might possibly go to New Zealand. Maybe
I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

(02:41):
But hey, he said it, and I'm not. I'm not
wouldn't throw them anywhere because you go to jail. It's
not a good idea. I'm not in the hands off
but he said it. But really, this guy, come on,
and he won't even come over to the South Island
check out some of the teams and have meetings with it. Now,
I'm not interested. The state of origin doesn't belong in
New Zealand. It doesn't. It's not ours not But Sir

(03:05):
Graham Lowe says, now, bug of that. I want it
here and I want it in Christ Judge by thirty
thousand people. Okay, tell him he's dreaming. Well I will.
I'll tell him in about no forty five minutes time
and he joins us on the program. Sir Graham Lowe,
state of origin in New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, all right, let's move forward with this.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
And in sport today, wise coach Andrew Webster is still
filthy with the NRL for their handling of the Laban
Kofusi tackle. Lab is out for the season essentially like
six weeks or the broken legs, So if they get
to finals, maybe I think he's gone for the season.
Kofuzi though, has just been stood down for two weeks.
Ah stink Judge. I hate it when they're like, all right,

(03:53):
we're going to crack down on this, so we're gonna
go really hard and therefore, for go harder, we'll stamp
it out. They just need to be consistent, so whatever
the punishment fits the crime. Yeah, okay. In another World
eight goals at the Olympics in a boat, Dame Lisa
Carrington's pretty handy with a paddle. She'd taken a year
off international competition and tell An so Os from canoe
racing in z now she's off to the World champions

(04:14):
In fact, she's already there. How I don't know quicksilver,
but is she fit? High performance coach from canoe Racing
in z Nathan Leos reckins.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
She is.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
She has been training since since the Paris Olympics. She
knows for kayaking you have to maintain that fitness and
level of training even if you're not competing, and she
was able to keep quite a good standard a year.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah. I don't see a lying on the couch eating
Doritos and drinking Coca Cola, do you. No, certainly not
a kievy. Golf boss Ryan Foxes punching down on New
Zealand weather in November, which is probably fair. He's gunning
for the Australian PGA title in November long with a
couple of the countrymen Ahelia and Kobori. No Kiwi has

(05:03):
run one that this event. Excuse me, this millennium or century,
but millennium sounds cooler. Was that happening, Ryan?

Speaker 6 (05:12):
There's a pretty strong Kiwi contingent up in Queensland, and
hopefully there's a few Kiwis fly over to watch the
PGA as well, so it'll feel like a little bit
like playing at home, maybe just with some slightly better
weather than we get the end of November.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Me and the Toolbox coach jud Flavel has high expectations
for his man at the sixteen teen Asia Pup starting
tonight in Saudi Arabia. Have they taken on Iraq at
eight o'clock the first of three group matches for the Toolblacks.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
We believe that we can win any game, in every
game and against any opponent that's here.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
We have no doubt that it's going to be a
tough torment.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
But whatever happens that we know that we're going to
gain so much knowledge and experience from this that's going
to help set us up in the future. Get in
there and get busy. There's jud Flavel and that's what
I'll join now. The program by Motu. Tony, of course,
are former Kiwi but now high performance manager at enzid

(06:12):
r L get a, Matu, how are you?

Speaker 4 (06:16):
I'm really well, thanks study and good too.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Good to check and great to have you on board.
When we look at the Warriors team that's coming out
today in face of well, they're under the pump quite frankly,
after what's happened over the last couple of weeks. It
hasn't got any easier after the last minute loss over
the weekend and now they face the might of the Bulldogs.
We'll go back before we go forward, Matu, what happened

(06:41):
against the Dolphins last week? How did these guys manage
to spill that one?

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah? Look, the Warriors were you know, were quite unlucky,
I thought, you know, and if anything, you know, the
robber the Green win against them. You know, one week,
you know they're beating Newcastle at the death for a
special effort from Likahosima, and then you know, you fast
forward a little bit and they're on the receiving end
of a you know, of a special play by the
Dolphins at the end. This you know, I know, they

(07:07):
their form hasn't been you know great in recent weeks,
but you know, they're still sitting well in the table
fourth and I think if you offer them, you know,
the position they're in now at this time of the year,
at the beginning of the season, they would have you know,
they would have snapped your arm off to take it.
So you know, yes, the reformers in great at the moment,
but they are you know, in a solid position.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
See enough signs against the Dolphins that the slump, let's
call it a slump that they're in right now. They've
not had great results a couple of buys as well
over the last six to eight weeks. Do you think
that's turning because they've got real issues with injury. You
see enough when these younger guys coming through to suggest
that it'll be okay, they should be right against the

(07:50):
Bulldogs and maybe then on it.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, I think the Warriors, you know, they've shown, you know,
throughout the season and.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
You could even.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
Say, you know, under you know a lot of the
games that you know Andrew Webster has led this club
that they're resilient.

Speaker 4 (08:05):
They're resilient side.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
You know, they've got a sort of next man up
approach in terms of.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Dealing with injuries.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
So I think, you know, going into the Dolphins game
in the weekend, there were probably ten first liners out,
so you know, I think.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
They had a big part to play in it.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
But you know, the young players they've had in their
team the season have really stood up.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
And you know, Eddie Roma Toyava was.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Another one, you know that didn't look at a place
in the weekend and he's got a bright future ahead
of them.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Pressure on these guys, and I might be banging on
a bit too much and I could well be wrong,
being wrong before Motoll wrong again, But the mental pressure
on some of these younger athletes, especially under juress, under fatigue,
there's a lot on the plates of these guys twenty
twenty one, twenty two to actually deal with that pressure.

(08:52):
Do you think they can? When when you look at
the way it unfolded up against the Dolphins, it suggests
to me that maybe it's not a bridge too far.
But it's going to be tough for some of these
younger blokes, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (09:03):
Yeah, it is tough.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
You know, it's tough, you know, to play, you know,
in the grind of the NRL every week, and that's
why you know you'll see Andrew Webster, you know, Rotate,
you know some of these young players in and out
of the squad.

Speaker 4 (09:15):
You know, some of these.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Players have actually you know, earned the trust of the
coach but also their teammates, like the Metric Waymonga, Tennas
Deal Smith is starting to get you know, regular game
time off the bench. So yes, it is tough, but
that's where the presence of some of these senior players,
you know, like the Mitch Barnett and the Fisher Harris
has has helped these young players. Unfortunately for them, you know,
they weren't on the park in the weekend, but you

(09:37):
know James Fisher, Harris Chanelle is back this week. You know,
Wade Egan won't be too far away. So you know
some of the experienced players will be doing and that
makes the game and the pressure you know, eases off
a little bit of these young players when they play
with these quality players who was senior and experienced.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Well some of the young and floating around as well.
I think it's great to see Ifarmonger back as well,
Dimitric was was out. He's got a lot about him
and still years wise, maybe behind. Do you look into
your cape balls and your near Cordo is a lot
more to actually provide that support. We saw what Roger
tivas has Chick did in the weekend and that sees
a lot about a seniority. But even he couldn't steam there,

(10:18):
could he?

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, you know, and you know, the Dolphins are a
really good football side.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
You know, I believe that.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
You know, in their last few games they've been averaging
about forty points, so you know, they weren't able to
get to that market because you know, the Warriors were
tough and they were a resilient side defensively, you know,
just unfortunate that you know, the score on at the
end of the game gave the Dolphins, you know, the
two points.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
But you know, this Warriors team is a resilient bunch.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
These young kids that are coming through are playing tough
and will continue to do so. So yes, you know
the recent form hasn't been great, but they're sitting in
fourth position at this time of the year, and you
know you can afford to have you know, a couple
of clips here and there, but knowing the Warriors, they
wouldn't want to have too many.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
More, no, and they could you know, what injuries like
in the NRL you've been there, played that actually can
be pretty tough when you look at the opposition coming
up this week in the Bulldogs, I mean, this team
is fire. How do they pull them down? How do
they stop them?

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Well, I think it's more so much you know, the
Warriors doing what, you know, what works best for them.
You know, when the Warriors are playing well, and you know, yes,
they'll be aware of what Bulldogs can do, but I
think their focus would be, you know, going back to
what works for them. And you know, this year, the Warriors,
you know, we're you know, deep into the season and
there's only two games you know that I've seen where

(11:35):
the Warriors have really let themselves down this year and
that was the Raiders game in Las Vegas, but also
the Melbourne game away from home. So you know, the
Warriors have been quite consistent. And yes, the Bulldogs are
a strong team. But knowing the Warriors, they'll be up
for this game and looking to respond after what's been
you know, a bit of a sketchy you know, three
four weeks for them form wise and.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Spik headspace when things like that happen within a team
and you've been in the nucleus of a number of
teams cross the NRL and of course international football as well.
What's the reset required from the senior players to get
this done?

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Yeah, you know, having been in the.

Speaker 4 (12:13):
Situation before, you know, a long time ago.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
But you know, I just remember, you know, when things
got tough for a young player, but also for the team.
You know, the senior players would just say, you know,
focus on your role and you know, make sure that
you can prepare and do your role as best as
you can.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
You know, That's how it does sound.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Very simple, but that's how they you know, reset it
and go back to what they were doing.

Speaker 4 (12:35):
Well.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
You know, for large parts of the season it's just
doing their role, everyone contributing in their own way. And
you know that we usually when you know, players one
to seventeen can do that, the results take care of themselves.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
And you know, the roriors have showed that.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Probably the last thing the Warriors want was to West
Tigers to beat the Bulldogs over the weekend. That's probably
not the best for them, and they haven't taken their
fourth spot. That's going to be an angry Donnies team.

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Yeah, you know, and you know happy for you know,
al Kiwi's legend. You know, head coach Benji Marshall, they
get that result, but like you said, CD, you know
the Bulldogs are going to have a response, so you
know it's up to the Warriors to mess that response
because you know, the Bulldogs are the quality side. You know,
fantastic players across the park, but you know, so do
the Warriors. And the Warriors have proven, you know, they

(13:24):
can foot it with the best and they're going to
have to do it this week.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Strengths for this last team, I don't want to know
punch down because they only just lost and they are
a good team, even though they've lost a couple of
key players. I'll see James Fisher Harris is back in
the reserves. Whether he makes an entry or not, maybe
late after injuries another story. But the puzzles around this side,
what if you liked, if you liked the way Darlin
has come back into it, do you enjoy well? I mean,

(13:50):
just tell me what what does it for you in
the side? Marti?

Speaker 4 (13:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:54):
What I You know, what I like about the side
is that you know, they've got a real good sort
of football system in terms of you know, at the
moment they've just got so many players out, you know,
I think I refer to ten first line players out,
but usually when these players or the majority of these
players are back in the side, you know they've got
a real good system that's not over dependent on you know,

(14:15):
a single player or you know, two players, and each
man does their job, which you know creates some opportunities
for everyone across.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
The park, you know.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
And that's what I like about this team is that
they they managed to find ways to win games. But
they're also a tough defensive team. And uh, you know,
I thinks showed in the weekend that you can attack
poorly and still be in with a chance to win
a game, but you can't defend poorly and.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
Win a game.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
And that's what the Warriors have done. You know, the
majority of the season is that defended really well.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
The scandal, if you can call it that, out of
that game sadly for the Warriors, more sadly for Jacob
Laban looks like he's out for the rest of the
season six weeks with that leg injury. Pelliskavusi is getting
a two week band for that tackle. Is that fear
and right? Should he be punished in a different way?

(15:08):
You more associated with the with the injury or can
you not marry those two things? What is to happen
here or what should have happened?

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Yeah, I think that, you know, the lawmakers of the
game will need to have a look at that. And
you know, Flee scuffles, he's a quality player that's done,
you know, performed at the highest level for a long
long time, and you can you know, he's an aggressive player,
but I wouldn't.

Speaker 4 (15:28):
Class him as a dirty player.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
So you know, obviously that tackle you know, was not
within the law of the game and has resulted in
Jacob's injury. But the lawmakers of the game will need
to have a closer look at that.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
And Martin, do you think in a situation like he's
out for six weeks, so the guy who made the
tackle he goes for six weeks too? Or is that
too simple?

Speaker 4 (15:48):
Yeah? I think that's too simple.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
And you know, you know, no rugby league player, you know,
in the professional ranks goes out there to you know,
deliberately hurt players. You know, it was just a tackle
that you know was not executed right and executed poorly,
which has resulted in a you know, an injury. Or
for Jacob, who's a fantastic young player. But you know,
the lawmakers of the game will need to look at

(16:11):
that because they've done really well in policing these dangerous tackles.
It's such as the you know, these tackles that where
there's unnecessary pressure placed on the lower limbs. So you know,
the lawmakers will need to determine how they can stamp
that out of the game.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Andrew Webster playing the last thing MATTERTONI thinks as always
for your time, ANDREWBS has been pretty vocal and his
complaints there. It's just not happy with that process and
what happened. Is he right to come out and have
a bit of a bit of a moan about this.
I moan it was horrible, But.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
Should he Yeah, I think Andrew Webster as well within
his rights to you know, to to have a complaint
I guess, or you know, issue with the tackle because
you know he's lost a quality young player, you know
as a result. So you know, and every sort of
player that takes the field, you know, no matter what
sort of level you play it in the senior senior football,

(17:07):
you know, you know there's a chance of injury. But
this case was unfortunate that you know, it was a
poorly executed tackle, so you know, definitely the coaches well
within his rights to take heed with you know, with
that tackle.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
We've got the breakdown.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
General manager of high Performance for a Warrior former Kiwi
Mockti Pony joining us there performance at n z Our
twenty four minutes after seven. The Warriors team has indeed
has indeed been released. Excuse me run through that right
here right now for you just see good idea about

(17:52):
who's he's going to be in the side up against
the Bulldogs team. That'll be a little i won't say concerned,
but a little freaked out about what happened. But when
they got more basically out muscled, like I said they
were fire in that interview, is because throughout the season
they have been and then the Warriors were fire too,
but they've kind of been extinguished somewhat by i'd say,

(18:15):
under their own steam, wouldn't you? AnyWho looking for your
calls on eight hundred eighty ten eighty the complaints around
the I'll call it a hip drop because it was

(18:35):
what Feleskavusi did to Jacob Laban was rank now I
suggested seat actually no suggestion straight out to man Tutoni
there that maybe maybe if you commit it's not a crime,
is it just a game of the league. But maybe

(18:56):
if you commit attack or like that, and you injured
someone that badly, you skate as well for the same
amount of time. Will that work? Malto obviously thinks it
might be a bit too tough because there's there's no
intent within that. But if the Warriors lose a player

(19:17):
for that long and the player that caused that injury
can run around again in two weeks, is that fair
and right? Interested in your thoughts on that eight hundred
eighty ten eighty come of eye for an eye, tooth
for a tooth kind of action. And when you look
at something like that tackle in itself, they weren't far

(19:39):
as saying it was a hip drop. Looked like it
to me if guy was well tackled, right, two guys
hang on when he comes running in and does the legs.
There's a bit of intent in that. Does it need
to change? Does it need to change? You wipe someone
out for six weeks, you go for six weeks as well.
I eight hundred eighty ten eighty interest in your thoughts

(20:01):
on that, And later in the piece, Sir Graham Low
joins us as we talk about Oh, dare I say it?
State of Origin coming to New Zealand. It's never coming.
Maybe it will, I don't think so. But a Graham
Rick is to go to christ Church just find out why.
Coming out here on new Stalk ZB lines are open

(20:22):
O eight one hundred eighty ten eighty. It's half past seven.
Sports Talk care of news Talk has z to be
looking at the Warriors. It's team naming day and there
is still a stink around the club about what happened
to Jacob Laban talking about this when I get while

(20:48):
people are a little triggered on that triggered on that
it was brutal talking about crime and punishment. Where does
it stand? Paul, hardcore Warrior fan, lovely league man? How's
the far North? My friend?

Speaker 3 (21:03):
You will?

Speaker 7 (21:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (21:05):
Well you are you?

Speaker 4 (21:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (21:06):
And I'm not so bad A little disappointed what happened
in the weekend. I keep looking back at the replays,
going how on earth did that fold? That time space?

Speaker 7 (21:15):
But you know, so it is, Oh, there's so much
to unpact from their games. But we'll take take all night.

Speaker 8 (21:21):
But so if you break someone's leg, you get two weeks.
The thing about it is Kafusi, that's his ninth charge,
and I think two or three years was dangerous for
everything from high shots to hip drops and so forth.
I mean, and for him to get two weeks for
that for breaking someone's leg. Apparently the NRL contacted the

(21:47):
Warriors I think on the seven day after the game and.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
Asked how his league was. Said, it's broken, but nothing happened, right.

Speaker 8 (21:54):
Yeah, Well apparently the scans hadn't been done, so they
whacked them with a food so that you know, before
they even found out that he broke his leg, they're
already whacked Kafusi with the two too much being it's
just but anyway, it would just sound like Windy Warriors
fans again. But moves what it is, mate. But I
see that the teams come out that it's going to

(22:15):
be a MESSI.

Speaker 7 (22:16):
Of I mean, what a game for the Bulldogs to
lose last week to the bottom player, Paul.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Just before you carry on, I said I'd read the
team out. I completely forgot. Just so people, if you're
listening entire attained Topicky is coming in at fullback. Latonise
Alesniak on one wing Roger Tui Vasa check. On the
other You're centers are Adam Pompey, Charan's and Nickel, Clarkstard, Chanel, Harris,
Tavita and Tanner Boyd A your six and seven, Marata Niar, Cordy,

(22:43):
Sam Healey, Jackson Ford to the front row, Kahlma, Kurt
Capeple on the edges, Aeron Clark and thirteen on the
bench at the moment, Tomighty, Martin, Eddie, Yermire toy Ova,
Demitric Valmonger and Tanner Stalers at Smith, James Fisher Harris
a possibility, but hey, we don't know that, so that's
the team, sorry, Paul.

Speaker 8 (23:04):
Carry on, Yeah, well, don't be surprised if he's a
bit of foxing going on like Wisters last week. You know,
a bit of foxing going on with some the halves.
But you you'll probably see chrisher Harris come into the side,
which is good news, and Beetrick Vaimonga. But if those
two guys are a plan, we've got a good chance

(23:26):
and I wouldn't be surprised to Flocky Galvin apparently he's
his injuries quite bad, but they've named them in the
side of anyways, But don't be surprised if Toby sixth
and is in there instead of Galvin, which would be
good for us. But it's gonna be a messive game.
You know, the Doggies fans will be really really upset
about the loss of the Tigers. You know, we all
all know what went down with stands with the fans,
We know how those Bulldog fans are. But I know

(23:47):
that the Worry Nation and Sydney will come out of
force mate and yeah, there will be a mess of warriors.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
He said that a lot to unpacking that game. Paul.
Now I'm looking at that and I don't know if
my accusations are right, but I do wonder about head
space under fatigue for some of the younger players, what
they were doing. But Lecca was lying on the ground,
So there's one man out. That was twelve on thirteen Cramp.
Possibly could he have put in more of an effort.

(24:15):
Was the confusion in the ranks about what to do
at that stage after the unfortunate incident with Watam's Alesniak
because of even thrown that arm out, we wouldn't have
been in that position should they have taken the two.
How they responded to that what can you pull out
of that?

Speaker 8 (24:32):
Well, from what I'm hearing that they watched that game
a couple of times, so we just made them watching
them and put them through the trauma or as he
put it. So you know, I mean we had a
fantastic went against the Knights, you know in the last minute,
and you know, fitness isn't an issue with us, but
just just that game where I guess it's just one

(24:55):
of those games, mate, you know, I mean, yeah, you know,
whether it was cramp or or whatever it was, you know,
the factors made that. You know, we were at home
and you know we should have put them away.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Well, yeah, it was like a five on what was it?
And there was more maybe a fine one two overlap
out there when it actually happened, and you look at
two of us as chick he looked just absolutely was Yeah.
He did so well though by himself.

Speaker 8 (25:26):
Yeah, but at the end of the day, you know,
we had two props, two guys playing props and did
not props. We had you know, k Crape you know,
out in the backline, and you know, and yeah, I
mean it sounded like Windy Warriors fence. But but the truth,
the cold hard facts you know, we had eight and
nine starters out, but that's just the reality of it.

(25:49):
But the pleasing thing is, mate, the Dolphins, I think
the week before I can't remember, they beat well, they
beat some team, but you know they're a really good thing.
They've beaten the Raiders, they've beaten the Storm, they've beating
the Bulldogs, the Dolphins. So you know, for that second
string and the new South Wales Cup spying that we
played with last week, to come that close to the Dolphins,
I think it's a good size in terms of dets, Mate,

(26:10):
So all we need to do is get a few
troops back on board, and you know we've got the
Dragons and the Eels coming up, so you know, I'm
quitely confident will stay in it for mate.

Speaker 2 (26:21):
Glad to hear you positivity. Mate, really, thank you very
much Ball for your time. She is so one hundred
eighty ten eighty lines are open free phone nomination wide.
Am I being a little cut heavy and punched down
on it?

Speaker 4 (26:35):
Do?

Speaker 2 (26:35):
I just ride this emotional roller coaster to its extremes.
I know they're not doing it to upset me, plainly,
They're not come sometime to take it personally I'll give
you the tip. It's really hard to clean ipa off
your television. Well, it was like a near on seven percent,

(26:59):
so that's quite thick. There's hope. I'm not too tough
on them, right, Tell me I'm not too tough on them.
Tell me about crime and punishment? Should they have let
the dogs out on Felice Cavusi. Paul pointed out, it's

(27:22):
got a record. No one likes the Warriors. That the
NRLs is news talking to be twenty three away from
eight twenty eight. Couple of texts before we get to
the phones. Warriors won't make the four. They've had a

(27:47):
great season, but they will make the eight and be
out the first week. Is that a past mark?

Speaker 4 (27:54):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (27:55):
This is not the Warriors year promised a lot, but
not to be don't matter. How is that? It's how
you finisht We know this. Let's get onto the phones.
Tony High, there you going, mate, I'm okay. How do
you think I'm going?

Speaker 9 (28:14):
Oh yeah, I can fear your passion, but I wouldn't
marry too much, mate, especially if the Tigers rolled the Bulldogs.
I'm hoping they were all watching that and there's plenty
of holes to find.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
Well, they've got bass, didn't they the Bulldogs? And I
don't see them responding like that. Again, I think that
was a massive wake up call to a team. What
are they sitting third on the ladder?

Speaker 4 (28:36):
Note?

Speaker 2 (28:36):
Yes, no, where are they?

Speaker 9 (28:38):
They're right up there, well the fifty.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Yeah, they're third on the ladder. They're they're equal on
points of the storm and only a couple of behind
the Raiders.

Speaker 9 (28:49):
So yeah, but they're all young fellows too, and so
we so I'm pretty happy with it. But they have
got a few stars. We've got to negate like Crichton
and all that sort of thing. But yeah, I'd like
to see more from your half. I mean, you did
four games now, so just to start, I saw a

(29:11):
few things. He just a little bit lapsed and he's
passing and direction and a little bit more running would
be good to come from him.

Speaker 2 (29:19):
So how long do you give someone what's there, Grace
Perry before you expecting a little more.

Speaker 9 (29:26):
Well, this should be the Grand Final really, I mean
you're paying the second place, third place team, so she's
going to turn it on. They do have another half
back there called.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
Cleary, and I talk about throwing young guys to the
walls and thinking they might be able to cope under
the pressure when they're fatigued and you reckon Cleary pass
free to it.

Speaker 9 (29:51):
Well if he teach have the same usually ball as
his brother, and his brother started when he was seventeen eighteen, So.

Speaker 2 (30:00):
No, that's no pressure, mate, just timing then and win
the game for us out of nowhere.

Speaker 9 (30:05):
Well, I think that one of the.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
Problems that the Warriors have got plainly, it's it's not
the youth, because that injebrance is outstanding. It's combinations, and
it's impossible to put together decent combinations when we're talking
about decisions made and that amount of time, and you've
got to know where guys are going to be. And
if you're not used to playing with some of the combination,
it just makes it a little harder. And on that

(30:28):
they actually did very well, didn't they, Tony lose by
a handful, well two in the last well minute. Wasn't
that bad? I suppose.

Speaker 9 (30:37):
Yeah, there wasn't a lot, and there was a few
just like I said, there's a few just lazy passes actually,
and they dropped a few balls in that first twenty
minutes which were right on to the ten meter line,
and they.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
Had a lot of the ball. The amount of ball
they had and the amount of position they had. You
got to give credit to the Dolphins defensive line because
they repelled them time after time after time. So you
can either say they were really good defensively or the
Warriors just lacked something on offense.

Speaker 9 (31:07):
Oh, Dolphins are up there. I mean when they hitn't it?
So we when we can hit it, but we're we're
like a bloody shot duck at the moment. But uh,
we're still turning up. And that's all you need.

Speaker 4 (31:19):
Mate.

Speaker 9 (31:20):
I got faith.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
You got faith. That's it, because it's only a matter
of faith, I've been told. Darcy writes another, how's your
brand spanking new producer going? Is he ready to quit yet?
Think he's made some bad choices in life. Well, he
hadn't met me when he took the job on right,
he's not here yet. He's still learning the ropes. An
I noticed that he's not here right now. He has

(31:42):
quick Well he got it at six in the morning,
said you know, look, how professional does it? He was
with the Mike Hoskin. Yeah, and then he met you
and now he's not in the building. Yeah, hopefully he's
back by the end.

Speaker 9 (31:50):
Of the week.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
Yeah, and I look pretty funny eating corn on the
cobb and no teeth, aren't you pal? You giving me
lip already? It's only a Tuesday. Did I just threaten you?

Speaker 4 (31:59):
No?

Speaker 2 (31:59):
I didn't. It was a joke, wasn't it. As the
New Storks eb so Graham low joins us next, I'm
so unthreatening.

Speaker 9 (32:11):
And it's big.

Speaker 2 (32:12):
Hello now to Sir Graham Lowe, who thinks that maybe
he might be able to lure origin not to New
Zealand per se, but to ottul Pahi christ Church. Sir
Graham always a pleasure. What makes you think that you
can lure state of Origin into the South Island?

Speaker 3 (32:30):
Well, I think Darcy, good afternoon, mate, I hope you're
going well. I think that christ Hitch has now produced
a stadium that is capable of conjuring up an atmosphere
that's just so electric. New Zealand would have never seen
anything like it. And I think that if we can
get a State of Origin, even though it's got a

(32:53):
far limited crowd when comparing it, say to Eden Park
over here, I think the atmosphere will be electric and
unseen in New Zealand unparalleled in New Zealand, and that's
taken into account. Even the great World Cups matches that
we've had in this country, no one has ever seen
in this country an Origin game here in New Zealand.

(33:15):
You might have been fortunate to see them in Australia,
and they know what the Origin can deliver. But to
get that atmosphere in Queensland and the new stadium there,
I think would just be outstanding. And I know, financially
with the numbers of people, and you know, there's a
lot less people can fit into that stadium as compared
to maybe other places. But that's up to all those

(33:39):
involved in, including the government, the council down there, everybody else.
They've just got to make it work if the opportunity
comes along.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
You've approached the Sports Minister, Mark Mitchell around how important
this is plainly. What do they say? What kind of
contribution do you think the government? How could they push
this on its way? Do you think?

Speaker 3 (34:02):
I think? Well, to be fair, I've had a cup
of tea a cup of coffee with Mark and just
told him how good I think it would be. But
I've you know, I haven't been in the position really
to go much further than that. But he Mark gets
it straight away. He understands it. And I think it's
just a matter of if all we need is a
wink and a nod from the NRL, and then we

(34:24):
can go to the next step. I don't you know,
I think it's too early to count count the chickens yet.
But you know, the draw the draw card blind Freddy
can see it as the new stadium down there in
christ Church. There's nothing in New Zealand that matches it.

Speaker 4 (34:39):
So while it while it will have a you.

Speaker 3 (34:42):
Know, maybe thirty thousand or you know, round about maybe
a bit less, I'm not sure, but round about that number,
the powers that be have just got to make those
numbers work and satisfy that the NRL and people that
are fortunate enough to get along there and watch it,
even though it on TV, we'll see something that New
Zealand has never ever produced before.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Why would the NRL bring the state of al And
to New Zealand. It's not our game, it's their game.
It's got not a great deal to do with us.

Speaker 3 (35:11):
Slowly, you know, there's a big part of that. I
agree with us. It is their game and that for
that reason. I've never been a fan of having a
Kiwi side, you know, involved or touching it or being
part of it. You know it is an Australian game,
but they've all you know, the state of origin has
already put itself on the world stage. It's it's one
of the great world sporting events now and you know

(35:34):
it's what it's watched by gazillions around the world. And
New Zealand has got to get out of this little
brother syndrome they've got in and put their hand up
and say, hey, we can make this work. We can
make that Those shoes mightn't fit us, but we'll wear them,
don't worry about that, and we'll be able to run
flat out on them. We've got to just think a
little bit bigger and get a little bit of that
Australian we can do it attitude into us instead of

(35:59):
coming up with the reasons you can't.

Speaker 2 (36:01):
That's a very good point and Aussie has always looked
to reasons we can not, reasons they can't. I suppose
you look at the Lands and their attitude towards expansion teams,
which you'll know are all about and they're almost they
don't have a great deal would have desire to meet anybody,
So why would that change for them? Why would they
point it at New Zealand when there's no money to

(36:23):
be made at it and they're not overly interested in
us anyway.

Speaker 3 (36:26):
I mean, these guys know how to make money out
of anything, mate, So we might think there's no of course,
there'll be money in it made. There will certainly be money.
There'll be there'll be gazillions in it. Don't worry about that.
You get the right people doing it, the right people,
the right partners involved. I don't think money will be
an issue. There will be, there will be the argument,
there's no doubt about it, but bums on seats and

(36:48):
the numbers of people that can fit in the stadium.
But there's more than one way to skin a cat.
And and I just think New Zealand has got the
opportunity here and we should just grab the ball and
absolutely run with it. And you know, we often you
hear a lot of people in this country saying we
can't do this, we can't do that. Well, I think
can't we can't. We can't have that as an excuse.

(37:10):
Can't can't be an excuse because we you know, a
lot of us say can't because we don't know what
We don't want to ask for help. We think asking
for helps to sign a weakness, but it's not. It's
a sign of strength. So this time everybody's got to
ask to help one another and we will make it work.
There'll be no calants anywhere.

Speaker 2 (37:28):
If you look towards Eden Park, that's where the bums
on seats would be. Would that be a backward step,
do you think, grayma. I know you want to see it,
and you're a you're an Auckland kid, but you want
to see a brand new stadium. But would that be
I'd rather have it at Eden Park because there's so
many more people there in The atmosphere would be better.
But you challenge me on this one, saying no, the

(37:49):
atmosphere be better at the car.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
Mate, tell you Eden Part's a dog. It's a dog.
It's an old stadium, it's it's in the middle of suburbs.
You know, it's got some great tremendous history there. I
don't deny that at all. But this is a new,
modern stadium that will deliver an atmosphere like this country
has never seen ever.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
And as far as your own desire to get a
South Island based team, Sir Graham involved in the NRL.
How's that flying along? Anything new? From that standpoint?

Speaker 3 (38:23):
I wish there was something new. I could tell you
a better das, But no, no, we're just sitting and waiting,
and you know, they've got a bit on their plate
at the moment. And this Origin episode just keeps bubbling
along also and just raises its head every now and then.
But I can see, I can see what it'll bring
to this country. I can see, and you know, I'm

(38:45):
very fortunate in that I was at the very first
Origin game in nineteen eighty and you know, I look
down there, and I'm not saying I was the only one.
There was plenty of people there that could see the same.
But I could see my imagination delivered me what's only
just been what we're all just seeing now. I could
see that back in nineteen eighty, and I can see

(39:07):
something similar being up to happen in New Zealand. It
can be the catalyst for all sorts of things that
can be a catalyst for a totally new competition in
this country. This country can produce like an Origin type concept.
You know, it just provides so many new, great opportunities.
It's just a matter of getting all these people say

(39:27):
oh this can't be done, that can't be done, getting
them all and so don't have that as an excuse.
Get them to put their hand up and ask for help.
Just ask for help, because if we help one another,
we can make this work.

Speaker 2 (39:40):
And I suppose with Takaha when it opens, there won't
have any problems with neighbors and noise up after eleven o'clock,
would they? So that's going to be a positive.

Speaker 3 (39:48):
Oh absolutely, mate, you know, and the christis the town
near the city. It's just fantastic when you see what
you know, when I've just spent a few days down
there last week with work with something totally unrelated, and
it is just fantastic. The restaurants and whatnot that are
all within just a short stroll from the stadium.

Speaker 4 (40:09):
It'll just just be magnificent. Sports, you will say, always sports,
sports and new stalks.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
Not enough people, not enough seats. They never do it,
said Grahamlay, thanks for your time. I'm sure though that
when he said that they'll find a way to make
money out of this, don't you worry. It'd be right.
They would atmosphere extraordinary. It would be quite the event
to go to you. I just don't think it belongs here.

(40:44):
Even Eden Park like fifty thousand, that would be extraordinary
if they were to come.

Speaker 4 (40:49):
I think.

Speaker 2 (40:51):
The most responsible thing to do from the NRL is
to give as many people as possible the chance to
attend an Origin game. Wouldn't you think that would be
the logic behind them doing that. And if it was
an awe and you have fifty thousand people plus you've
got Hamilton and the North of Auckland catsman, I think

(41:14):
it'd be irresponsible to have it at a car even
though it would be a great deal of fun. I'd
definitely try and go, even though I think it has
no place here. I mean, you'd be crazy not to write.
Thanks very much for your course and I think for
your texts. Someone said a country of origin test to
be a better option for a game in christ Church. Yeah,

(41:35):
Darcy Origin even part. Yes, there's so much support and
