Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from Newstalk zed B.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
A very good evening six after seven News Talk ZIB
Sports Talk Tuesday Evening, the sixteenth of July twenty twenty
four Elliott Smith and for Darcy Watergrave for the next
couple of nights. Enjoying a couple of days off and
well earned at that sad news today the passing of
Norm Hewett. What a player, What an absolute legiend of
(01:08):
New Zealand rugby, but not only New Zealand rugby. You
think about the things that he did when he retired,
when he called it quits, when he had his come
to Jesus moment or if you want to call it
with the bottle and realized that he needed to change
his ways and turned into an extraordinary character, changing his
life and dancing with the stars. He was an anti
(01:30):
violence advocate. He did a lot of work with the SPCA.
Is really remarkable to look back at his life gone far,
far too soon at the age of fifty five. Will
reflect on the passing of Norm Hewitt tonight here on
news Talk ZEB. We'll also chat about the Warriors as well.
They are back in action. On Friday Night against the
(01:52):
Raiders and turning into must win territory for the Warriors
at this point of the NRL season, the eleventh sorry
twelfth on the latter playing the eleventh place Raiders on
Friday Night. Their team to play the Raiders announced or
at about an hour sorry go Slack Griffin. Warrior is
assistant coach who joined the program and reflect on some
of those changes. The big news for the Warrior is
(02:13):
that Tahu Harris is out for the rest of the
season with a wrist injury as well, so a blow
for the Warriors as they try and scramble and make
their way back into the top eight. This competition that
seemed well set for them this year on the basis
of being one went out of the NRL Grand Final
last year, now sort of crumbling a little bit. So
(02:34):
we'll hear from Slack Griffin this hour here on news
Talk zeb. Your calls and texts always welcome to the
program as always eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine
two ninety two for a text message this evening here
on news Talk zeb where it is eight and a
half after seven today. Former All Backs coach Lurrie mains
(02:55):
sounding the Lake. Norm hewits as one of rugby's great
individual success stories the nineties. Stockers died age fifty five
after a battle with murder and neuroon disease, having played
twenty three games for New Zealand between nineteen eighty three
and nineteen ninety eight. After his issues with alcohol abuse
that were well Documentsity became an anti violence ambassador and
public speaker mainstays. When he first selected Hue back at
(03:16):
nineteen eighty three, it was a bit of American.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
I had to speak to him quite sternly and he
took that on board, came into the team immediately showed
not only good performance on the rugby field, but also
he took a real turn in his personal behavior.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Indeed, more on Norm hered in a moment or two
here on Sports Talk. Patrick three Piloto has been left
behind from the All Blacks traveling party the San Diego
for the one off test against Fiji. The Blues locker
returned early from a nee ligament issue to lead the
Blues to the Super Rugby Titland started two tests against
England's being rested now Sam Dowry. That was with the
squad's cover anyway, as likely to day, or at least
(03:52):
has headed over to San Diego. I'm not going to
try and second guess the All Blacks team about forty
eight hours up from it being selected, but assistant coach
Loo McDonald explains why they left toy pilot to at home.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Just his fitness in terms of his body. You know
has returned into the final with a knee. He rolled
his ankle during that game and then two massive efforts
against a really physical England pack.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Fake news, That's what Queensland coach Billy Slater is saying
after shutting down rumors of a rift between the coaching
staff himself and Selwyn Cobbo ahead of start of Origin
Game three tomorrow night. Has been reported in the Aussie
media the league media over there that the two had
not been seen I to I, resulting in the Brisbane
Center when getting dropped for Game two. Cobbo has since
(04:36):
been recalled for the designer against New South Wales at
sun Corpse Stadium, but Slater says any reports that are
rift are ruddish.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
For me to talk about this is totally irrelevant. Twenty
four hours before at a game like Selden and I fine,
like there's that that's total fake news, honestly, like the
accountability to report the truth is obviously not there.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
And finally, in sports today, a real foursome of New
Zealand golfers will contest the Open Championship at Royal True
next week. Running Fox, Daniel Clear, Michael Hendry and Consumer
Kabori will tee up at the Major from Thursday night
on the Firth of Clyde. Fox outlines how they're building
their camaraderie, all four of us playing practice round together tomorrow,
which will be pretty sweet. I can't remember off the
(05:17):
top of my head the last time we had four
kiwis play Major, but it's certainly not since I've been
a professional. That's Ryan Fox and that has been sport today. Yes, indeed,
sad news coming out this morning around Norm Hewitt passing
away at the age of fifty five. As you heard
there Laurie Maines, he played twenty three games for New
(05:37):
Zealand and he was only fifty five when he passed away.
You do motor neuron disease. There's many ways you might
remember Norm Hewitt. This might be one of them.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Well, that's going to be one of the great trast
Nold battles Norm Hewitt against Richard Cockleck.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yes, face to face with Richard Cockrell in nineteen ninety
seven at Old Trafford. Well, maybe it's the broken arm
he played with as Wellington won the NPC in two thousand,
Or maybe it's the pass of doblay he did on
the Dancing with the Stars in two thousand and five
of the first winner of that show. It was a career,
maybe a life of two halves cut short by MND.
(06:12):
Thinking of his family and friends tonight, we reached out
some former teammates officials to chat. I know Laurie Main
spoke with Jack on Drive a couple of hours ago,
but it's all still a little too raw for those
in you and well as well as wanting to respect
the family and their time to grieve. Of course, in
nineteen ninety nine, he drunkenly broke into the wrong Queensland
Queen's Town excuse me motel room, and he later broke
(06:33):
down in tears at a media conference apologizing from it.
From there, it was quite remarkable how he managed to
turn his life around from a battle with the booze
into an advocate of Dancing with a Stars winner as
I mentioned a public speaker, animal cruelty, an anti violence officer.
So instead of hearing from others, let's hear from the
man himself, speaking to news talks here be in twenty fourteen.
Speaker 6 (06:53):
In an awesome journey. And I use that word because
you know, it is what it is, as far as
you don't know where you're going to end up. And
I would never have thought I would have been doing
some of the things that I am doing now back
in ninety seven, ninety eight, you know, and he.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Had all those things to his name that I mentioned before.
So what title did he give himself.
Speaker 6 (07:17):
I'm just normal.
Speaker 7 (07:19):
You know.
Speaker 6 (07:21):
Rugby was part of my life, as was dancing, and
what is really important to me as my family. You know,
I really respect the journey where we are right now
as a family. You know, I've got a ten year
old daughter, Elizabeth Grace Tonnicle and an eight year old son,
(07:45):
Alexander to Mapihimodia, a wonderful wife, and Arleen. I mean,
if it wasn't for her, I don't believe, you know,
I could have ever really reflected because in the absolute
moment of darkness ninety nine, when I was in a place,
you know, and people go get over it, you know.
But I said, if I then, if I don't every
(08:07):
now and then reflect back to that moment, how can
I enjoy the moment of where I've come to today?
When I said, look, you know, I remember calling Arleen
and I told her to leave because I just got
myself into that trouble in Queenstown. Who my life was
just a mess. And she said, I see something in you.
(08:28):
I believe in you. And you know, in life we
just need that glimmer of hope, somebody just to you know,
something to hold onto. And that was that moment.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, very well, said Norm Hewitt's rest in peace.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
All Talk, Old Talk, All Sports, All Sports. It's Sports
Talk with Elliott Smith on News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
It is fourteen after seven here on news Talks EDB
this evening, well about an hour or so ago. The
Warriors team named to face the Camber Raiders on Saturday,
sorry Friday evening, New Zealand time ten pm. And it's
a different looking team to the one that lost to
the Bulldogs in Golden Points before the bye. There's no
Charles local Crook's day. He's out with the calf injury.
(09:14):
Marcelo Montoya is out as well, Tor Who Harris the
news today that he's going to miss the rest of
the seasons. Of the back line looks very, very different.
The four pack exactly the same, but Tor Piki wartenis Leslie,
Akali a Tower Pompey to us a check on the wing,
Harris to Vita to Mighty Martin. Is your Warriors back line?
Lekahalasima the other point of interest named for a second
(09:36):
match on the interchange to join that, to discuss that
and plenty more here on News Talk ZB as Warriors
assistant coach Slea Griffin, who joins us this evening slay
hounds things.
Speaker 8 (09:47):
I'm good mate, how are you?
Speaker 9 (09:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Really well? Thank you well. Look, Warrior is back in
action after the buy against the Raiders on Friday night.
But look, let's start, unfortunately on a down note with
the news today that Torhu Harris is out for the
season with his wrist injury. Just how much of a
blow is that for your Warrior camp?
Speaker 8 (10:08):
Yeah, I mean, Who's an inspirational leader and player. We
all know what he's capable of. Unfortunately he's just been
a bit hampered by that risk injury. And yeah, he's
people to know, but kind of what he's had to
deal with off the field, even just in his personal life,
just managing that risk pain has been has been a
(10:28):
really tough time for him. So yeah, we'll miss him,
but you know, it's always the next man up cliche.
So it's an opportunity for one of our other players.
And whenever we've had one of those kind of younger
boys step up or someone get the opportunity to get
more minutes, they have done a good job there. So yeah,
we'll have to play a bit differently because he gives
us that ballplaying option through the middle. But yeah, coaches
(10:51):
have been in the lab trying to trying to figure
out different ways.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
I'm sure the lab has been been working over time.
How do you replace some as a leader? I know,
as a captain. You know, Mitch Bunnett's going to take
that duty, but he brings so much, doesn't he the
to the camp as a leader? How do you replace
that sort of intent, agible thing on the park? Oh,
I think it's just.
Speaker 8 (11:13):
A few of our other boys have really stood up
in that area, like Dylan Walker, Yeah, Mitch Barnett, Kirk Caate, well,
Wade Egan, So We've got a lot of you know,
senior players who are all just sharing that load now.
So Mitch Barnett leads in a different way and the
boys really responded to you know, his his motivation, and
(11:34):
Eli's by his actions as well. So we'll mess tohu.
But yeah, Mitch is really proud and honored to be
the new captain. So yeah, really excited to see how
he goes for this of the year.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
How frustrating is that in a casualty ward you've got
at the moment with Torhue or Rocky Rocket Berry's still
in there, Shawn Johnson, Luke Metcalf obviously been out for
a while. I'm Montoya, Nicol Kluck start, you know, I'm
raeling off some of the real starters. You know that
the high profile players the team. How frustrating is that
for you as a coaching group.
Speaker 8 (12:05):
Oh, look, I know it's boring, but sometimes you just
get stuck in where we're at right now and you're
just week to week.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
But yeah, we went through this kind of.
Speaker 8 (12:17):
Period a while ago and then we got a lot
back and now we're kind of back there. But we've
had kind of that all year. So the boy has
been really good dealing for adversity. Players have played in
different positions or different sides of the field. But yeah,
we just want to really simplify a game, and we
know what our identity is and whoever steps into whatever
(12:37):
position or pools on a Warrior's jersey knows what they
need to bring.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
So yeah, well, speaking of that versatility, Roger ti Vasischik
moves back out to the wing this week. With the
changes that you've made with the Lattawa and Pompey and
the centers, you know, he's played center this week the season,
he's already played wing in one game. He's obviously done
fallback as well. That speaks to the versatility that you've
probably got and players like Roger.
Speaker 8 (13:01):
Yeah, he's been very selfless actually, come back from Rugby,
getting used to our defensive systems again and he's a
move left right wing, center fallback, So yeah, really excited
to see him on the wing. It'll look free him
up a little bit to get you know, hopefully more
touches of the football out of the backfield earlier in
the sets. So that's when Roger's very dangerous, so hopefully
(13:24):
we'll get his carries up again, like Arlie's only just
got back, so we haven't kind of had that guy
that we could bring into the cinder to push Roger
to the wing. So yeah, very excited to see how
Roger goes on the wing.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Shawn Johnson and Luke mtcalff Inch and closer to returns.
What are they actually able to do at the moment
in terms of training and I think the word today
three to five weeks away for both of them. So
are they back out running on the on the park.
Speaker 8 (13:49):
Yeah. They actually just jumped into a little bit of
training this week and looked pretty sharp, so that gave
us very good practice. They kind of jumped on in
a few drills and on the B team for a
little bit to throw ask some questions of us defensively.
So yeah, they're just integrating back in. Obviously, Luke's had
(14:09):
a history there and his a little bit longer. I'm
not sure exactly how long, but they're definitely back into
some footy stuff now, which is good for us.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Licqua hall Asima dabilling last time out. How exciting to
have a young talent like that in the group and
gets another opportunity off the interchange this week against the
Raiders Yeah, it's awesome. He's i think under nineteens this year, so.
Speaker 8 (14:36):
Seeing what he did with his first carry again a
player that come on in the middle and then he
ended up playing center, so shows a versatility he's got
just the pure athlete he is, but he's been working
really hard just just learning all those fundamentals we call it.
But yeah, I think he's got a very very bright future.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Did the buy come at a good time? I don't know.
You probably didn't want to go into the buy on
a loss, but did come as a good time just
to break up this campig and you've got what seven
games coming in a stretch to end the season.
Speaker 7 (15:13):
Yeah, A bit of an odd one thought.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
We actually played pretty good against the Bulldogs with our
effort and our defense. We just kind of missed the
attacking combinations and probably like to have a few players back.
But I mean it's always good to fresh and the
boys up. We've got a pretty tough trip to Canberra
this week, so it does make the travel a bit
easier coming off of buy. So the boys are fresh.
(15:36):
They they got four days off, so we've actually been
getting pretty decent weather as well. So yeah, I think
that fresh and ready to go to attack this last
period of the season.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Yeah, it's a it's a stritch, isn't it, Because you've
got you know, you're in twelfth at the moment, this
run of games in front of you, and obviously you're
sort of chasing the top eight, so there's a there's
a bit of a task in front of you. But
how energized to the team to to get where they
want to be this season?
Speaker 8 (16:01):
No, yeah, they know, you know it's going to be
tough to win some football games, but we just want
to have fun while we're while we're chasing that. Yeah,
we've we've been very close in a few games and
if we asked a few of those, you know, it's
so tight from where we are up to sixth place,
(16:21):
a couple of wins could make a huge difference. So yeah,
again we'll go back to taking it a week at
a time. Can't look past your opponent. You got to
respect the opponent you're playing and seeing any week in
NRL teams are beating each other. So yeah, we just
got one week at a time and it's a big
one for us this week obviously over in Canberra.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Yeah, and look eleven v. Twelve on the ladder, a
four point competition game in many ways, where are their
threats that the season and how do you think that
matchup looks from a warrior's perspective.
Speaker 8 (16:53):
Yeah, they've obviously got some big, strong forwards Tarpanie Papa
that laid the platform for them, you know, Jordan up
on a very dangerous and then I think Foggy'll be back,
so kicking game. They are a typical rookie Stewart team.
You know, they don't quit, they stay in the armory.
So with your big, strong, powerful so yeah, it's going
(17:16):
to be a real physical challenge in a real grindy game,
especially over there in Canberra. So yeah, it's going to
be a tough one. But yeah, we just gotta we've
got to turn it up and match it with them.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Yeah, and origin tomorrow night of course as well. A
foot in both games or a player in both games,
I should say from Mitch, Bunny and Kate, Well where
do your loyalties lie? Do you have a team and
or do you just hope that both players get out
unscathed from tomorrow night.
Speaker 8 (17:44):
Yeah, it'll be weird going for both players, will be
funny to see if they come you know, tackle each
other or I'm a Blues man though, so I grew
up going for the Blues. So yeah, fingers cross they
can get it done up there. It's going to be
very hard in some court, but yeah, go to the Blues.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
Very tricky place to go. Hey, Slade, really appreciate your
time with us on News Talks Beat this evening and
the best luck Friday nights in the Australian capital. Yeah,
thank you very much mate, Thank you a few times.
Slay Griffin, Warriors assistant coach, joining us on Newstalk CB
this evening. So not great news for the Warriors with
thor Who Harris out for the rest of the season,
(18:22):
the skip of the talismanic skipper gone for the rest
of the campaign. Warriors fans want to hear from you
tonight here on Sports Talk. Can the Warriors still make
the eight without tool who Harris?
Speaker 6 (18:31):
Or is the.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Season now looking like it's done seven matches to play?
They're outside the eight at the moment without tool Who
Harris some of those other key players we touched on
there with Slage Griffin. Are this team still a chance
of making the top eight? From what we heard from
Slade there the injury. I've been troubling him for a
while and more than we probably knew. So another thing
(18:53):
that hasn't gone right for the Warriors this season? What
chance do you give them of making the eight? The
season now? Though? Who Harris is out? Is it a
case of this year not being their year? Eight hundred
and eighty eighteen eighty nine two for a text? We
read a couple of text lined up that I'll get
to after the break here on News Talk Z B
whord is coming up twenty five after seven.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Everybody, no need for the DMO. We've got the breakdown
on sports talk call news Talk said, I remember when
we were dramming in your cup speeds a fast.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Seriously in your unbe seven news Talk talking the Warriors
this evening. A couple of texts though on a norm
here ever be one of those now? I saddened to
see hear about the passing of Norm hewittt Did he
play for Southland at one stage? I have a sneaking
suspicion he may have. Terry, Yes he did. He played
(20:04):
a couple of seasons for them, at least started out
in Hook's Bay, then went to Southland and then ended
his NPC career in Wellington. So well traveled Norm Hewitt
passing away to day the age of fifty five. Thanks
for the text, Terry. Let's go to the lines evening
Chris Let's talk Warriors had on.
Speaker 7 (20:22):
Ah, yeah, the Warriors. They're playing catch up forty in
terms of the end of the season, aren't they sort
of sort of what we've come to expect over the
last twenty five years. It's touch and go. You could say,
you know what I mean, we're losing players, but hopefully
that'll you know, a new player will come through. There's
so much talent every where, it's actually insane. I'm going
(20:46):
to put it up there that I believe that we
can do it, but we really need to, you know,
put our good games together.
Speaker 9 (20:52):
Now.
Speaker 7 (20:52):
The last round of the season, round twenty seven, we'll
actually got to buy.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Well, there's two points there.
Speaker 7 (20:59):
There you go. So and we're playing the Bulldogs again.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
You reckon, they get the Bulldogs again, they can beat
them after what happened last on the word far away.
Speaker 7 (21:08):
We need that's where that you know, people like to
bag Johnson, but that's what Johnson done does He wins
those games.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
That's the game on the scruff of the neck and
and yeah, gets some across the line. Yeah, I see it.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
You and Chris he's he's the iceman from the Hibiscus Coast,
if you know what I mean. He's a flying from
a Paroian that's what I call him. And now he's
good manly and he's got the ice in his veins,
and he kicks the goals, you know, and and and
and so unfortunately Tavia Tavida what's his name, ta Vida, Harrisvida, Yeah, yeah,
(21:41):
Harris Avida, sith. So he had two chances to get
us over the line and he missed it. And then
Matt Burden got them over the line. So do I
see them beating No, I see, I see. I see
the Bulldogs possibly being a top four side this year.
So I personally cannot see the Warriors. But I mean,
(22:02):
they could win at home, but I'm not too sure
there's going to be touch and go. But guess what,
I'll tell you something. I'm an original Warriors season ticket holder.
I went from Carlos Park to Mount Smart Stadium.
Speaker 8 (22:15):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (22:16):
I had these great, big hopes about winning titles. But
nowadays I'm not too fuss if we win the title,
and I just want us to make the eight. Yeah, yep,
because because because then the season keeps going. Because for me,
rugby league is the dreams. It's the highlight of my life,
the rugby league season.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Good man, Chris, nice here from you, and just to
point out, just to finish that, when the Warriors do
win it, after those twenty five plus years, whatever it is,
it'll be all the more sweet and nice to hear
from you this evening, Chris Oh, eight hundred and eighteen
eighty nineteen nine two. What chance do you give the
Warriors of making the top eight this season? Let's go
to Paul evening.
Speaker 10 (22:53):
Paul, Yeah, anyone who he says that the Warriors can't
make the eighth when it locks in the head. You know,
we're on nineteen points with three points out of the eight.
You look at the Bronx, they're below us, down eighteen points.
You know they were in the Grand Final last year.
We've got a reasonably good run. I mean apart from
(23:14):
that Titansmozle. You know, we've been there there or thereabouts,
and so if you look at it, look at our around,
they're guttible games. You know, the Raiders of Tigers we've
got the Eels, Dolphins, the Sea Eagles, the Bulldogs again
and the Sharks and then then we're going to buy.
So I've got no doubt that, you know, Mitch Barnett
and bit Paper will have to be in the origin
(23:36):
we'll come back and really lift the boys. Yeah, I'm
just a bit concerned, like the last guys said about
those clutch moments where Seawan Johnson does does tend to shine,
and I think we've just got a real hard decision
on his hands. When when Shawn's you know fit again he.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
Does yes, and he's what three to five weeks away,
So let's extend that to the five weeks. If he's
not back till then that's what two weeks left in
the regular season for him to come back in and
it may all be on the line by that point.
Speaker 9 (24:10):
Yeah, very much.
Speaker 10 (24:11):
So it's been interesting because you know, we haven't I
don't think there's one game where we've had our l
our frontline, best team on the field. Not just respect
to Todder Horrise, you know he's he's a good player
and a leader, but I think it could be a
blessing in disguise him having this injury and having this
(24:32):
time out and gives Mitch Barnett. We've seen what he
can do in terms of leadership and what he brings,
you know, to that forward pack. So I'm really excited
about that team that's been named, you know, with Ali
Lotawa and the centers. Tame to told pick, He's a
is a good little fallback. Be interesting. You know Roger
on the wing, what what he can bring on the wing,
(24:52):
and and our Ford pack is a pretty good four
pack forward pack mate, So would be really interesting to
see how the boys go this week in.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Paul, with what seven games left, and as you said,
they're on nineteen points, so well three points outside the eighth.
Who wins outside the eight? How many of those last
seven games do you think they need to win realistically
to make the eight from here?
Speaker 10 (25:14):
I'd say I'd say four for those and including the buy.
But they are guidable games. I mean, I know the Aral,
the n Arael is a tough competition.
Speaker 7 (25:23):
We know that.
Speaker 10 (25:24):
You know, the Dolphins are flying at the moment, but
they are guidable games. You know, on paper we should
be beating those teams. So you know, there's no Panther's,
no Roos, there's no storm in that and we all
know that when once the Warriors get on a roll,
no one wants to play them when it comes to
semi semi finals. So I absolutely hun a percent think
that confident will make the eighth.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
Good Man, Paul, nice to hear from you this evening,
Thank you very much of your call. Here on news Talks,
there be a couple of confident Warriors fans believing that
they can make the eight. Jack says, that's high. What
chance would depends on how many of those seven they
need to win? No one at six, seven or eight
ever wins anyway, so it doesn't really matter like to
be the first though, the first team to win what
(26:05):
was it two thousand and eight when that old finals
format to beat the top place team, maybe the Warrior's
gonna better history. I mean it's against them, sure, sure, sure, sure,
seven games to go. Just looking at the schedule now,
Raiders this week they're on eleventh, Tigers back at home.
The following week, well, we all know the Tigers are last.
(26:26):
It was after that they're second to last. Then it's
tricky Dolphins away they're in sixth, of course, mainly the
week after that they're in seventh, Bulldogs in fifth, Sharks
in fourth, and then they're the buyer to finished. Where's
two points to finish at the end. It's not a
bad run. Home Warriors fans. Twenty five away from eight
(26:47):
News Talk zeb Beat take a break now beat with
more after this. Myself to sports Talk Elliott Smith and
(27:08):
for Darcy water Grave for the next couple of nights,
and we're talking to Warriors. What chance of making the
eight from this point does they begin? They're closing stretch
of the season, seven games to go. We heard today
Paul hu Harris out for the rest of the season,
the skipper. So they're going to do it or not.
It's good to lines again and for a good evening
DearS house things.
Speaker 11 (27:26):
Yeah good a Elliott, how are you going good?
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Thank yourself?
Speaker 7 (27:30):
Yeah good good.
Speaker 11 (27:31):
Good to see RTS get get named on the wing.
I think you know, some of the Warriors faceful, have
been calling for that for a while. I think, you know,
you kind of respect whether you're giving them a go
at center, but it kind of just hasn't hasn't worked out,
And I think, to be honest, like if you look
across the league, there's very few strike centers. There's actually
(27:53):
a bit of a tradesman like position these days, where
I think we actually get more opportunity on the wing
on those play ones and play two's coming out of
coming out of trouble and then obviously just getting on
the the end of sort of you know, back line moments,
et cetera. But I think, yeah, like I'm hopeful that
the Warriors trying to get there, but I just feel,
you know, that they're going to have to win six
(28:15):
of their last seven. It looks like thirteen wins will
be what will secure the top eight, and I just
feel that they're kind of running out of a bit
of runway, to be honest, There's so many wins that
have got away from this season, and I guess if
you just follow that form line, like those tight games,
albeit the oppositions are gettable, Like those tight games have
(28:38):
kind of not won them this year. So, like I said,
I'm hopeful, but I guess the way they've got to
look at it is really, you know, kind of secure
that win and away at Canberra and then they've got
two home games against it the Tigers and Pera, which
ye you know, legitimate top eight contenders, like they need
to win those games. And then once they've you know,
(28:59):
hopefully got three on the trot, then you look at, okay,
well let's win three from our last four and then
you know have a real red hot crack. But honestly,
they've got some really hard road trips. I mean, history
of them getting wins at brock Vales. Also, like is
really challenging that Cronela fared been good for a couple
of seasons now, and obviously Dolphins Away is always going
(29:20):
to be tough with the Wayne Bennett's coat side. So,
like I say, hopeful, but they really are up against it,
and you know, they might have left her run a
little bit late for this year, but exciting times for
next season. I think they've got to They've unearthed a
whole bunch of youngsters and it'll be good to see
kind of how these forwards kind of kick on under
(29:41):
the leadership of you know, the likes of Mitch Barnead
and James Fisher Harris when when he comes across from
from Panthers. So it's exciting times. But again, it's just
been a bit of an up and down season.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
Yeah, and dars like this was supposed to be the
season though, wasn't it you know, off the back of
last year when they missed out on the final by
a win and then everything was set up for the
season and just hasn't really got going at any point.
Speaker 11 (30:04):
One hundred percent. And I think, you know, like it,
it feels like it is a bit of a team
in transition at the moment. And like Webby's great, Like
I love his enthusiasm and his positivity, and I think
like his loyalty to his players is a real strength,
but it might also be a real weakness as well,
where you've got these young guys that are raring to
go and actually just giving them an opportunity. And we've
(30:27):
seen the likes of like Lequa Hala Sima that's come on.
We know Cepha call is ready to go, is on
my copa ke at the back, like you know, he's
an excitement machine. And it just feels like it is
a team in transition. You've got halves that are you know,
Sja is kind of coming towards the end, and you
know he's been injured a lot of the season, and
(30:47):
you know, you've got guys like Luke Metcalf who you
know have had an injury prone a couple of seasons,
but you know, there's a real potential there. So it's exciting.
But it's just unfortunate, you know that the NRL comment
it's so hard to win, you know, like it's but
there's lots of positives.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
I think four is, Hey, it's nice to hear from
you this evening eight hundred and eighteen eighty nineteen ninety
two for a text message. Let's go to Tony evening tiny.
Speaker 7 (31:14):
Yeah, I was going good self.
Speaker 9 (31:17):
Oh, I'm not too bad. It's a bit of a shame.
I think we all hauled ourselves this year, going from
last year. It was just going to happen again, I think,
and it happened foulish and obviously. But I still think
they could make the eighth but I doubt it. I
(31:38):
doubt it very much. I think Shawn Johnson's gone, isn't he?
Speaker 2 (31:43):
Yeah, three to five weeks away from being back on
to play, I think from what I heard today.
Speaker 9 (31:48):
No, I mean it's even going to be signed.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
For next year, right, Well, he hasn't signed anything. Yeah,
I mean he might be done now, heah.
Speaker 9 (31:55):
I think so. I think I think we should get
rid of him anyway. To be honest, we need to
move on from Seawn Johnson. I think and try and
try and get this young follow up. Karita har is
going to stick around. He looking in the goods. It's
a pretty with Metca because he was looking good until
he got doing good. So it's hard to see to
(32:16):
beat him because he's just two injury praying.
Speaker 8 (32:19):
Dad, you know.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
Yeah, and some players a lot that aren't they. Yeah,
I mean Tahu Harris, what what kind of I mean,
what kind of blow is that? Tony? Do you think
to the chances?
Speaker 9 (32:31):
He can't do it all on his own? Man, he's
been been trying to do that all year and then
look where it's got him. It's got got him off
the field. But I think he's gone as a captain.
To be honest, he's a great leader, but I think
we need to have a bit of a change in leadership.
Like the guy he said, Mitch Barnett. I agree with
him hundred percent. But how long is Mitch Barnett's sticking
around for that?
Speaker 2 (32:51):
So I think I think he resigned not so long ago, Tony,
So I think he's here for at least a couple
more seasons.
Speaker 9 (32:58):
Oh well, you'd have to give him the leadership wouldn't you.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Yeah, New South Waleses origin player. Yeah, I think he's
probably the man man for the gig at the point, Tony,
nice to hear from you. Let's keep going on and
love evening while.
Speaker 12 (33:12):
Yeah, I mate listen on Bringing from Queenslands. I'm not
a Broncos fan, but you imagine how many of my
workmates that are fans. Hell's listening.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Warriors there above him on the table though.
Speaker 12 (33:28):
Yeah, I say no problem because people look at those
two and they think of their twenty twenty three form.
Johnson's been averaged the whole year, and on My Bag
and the Blade played to a far high livel United
and to who has looked very jaded and very tired
and fatigued for a long while, and without going into detail,
it is quite a serious olb rist injury he's got
(33:52):
and it's been hampering him for a while. Barnett too,
without going to too much detail. He's very happy to
be captain, my sources tell me, and he'll be sticking around.
But I think they've played with their full potential. They
might scrape into the eight. Look he brought back Johnson
for that debarker we had there on the Gold coaster,
(34:14):
and he brought them back too early. If the halves Chanelle, Tavita,
Harris and Martin are doing the job, you've just got
to leave them there and show but a faith. I'd
bobbly move the boy that's playing fullback, saying tell Pickie
in closer. I think he's a bit more for a fullback,
and I think they should but Roger at fullback. But
(34:36):
you know, people say, oh, Johnson would have got us
to win against the Bulldogs, Well, sorry, folks, he would
have never got as close to the Bulldogs that Johnson
was playing. The way he's played, it's fire, tackles, out
kick and they all know where it's going to go.
A fit Johnson like last year. Sure, but unless he
can come back and produce the form that he did
(34:57):
last year, they're better off just sticking with the halves
that's got you know. I mean, I could run a
lot quicker than I can now twenty years ago, but
it was funny years ago.
Speaker 8 (35:07):
You know.
Speaker 12 (35:07):
It's that you've got. These fans are going to stop
looking at Johnson and Harris through rose colored glasses. They've
been great players. I'm a big fan of both, but
I think farther time starting the call on both of them.
You know, it's unfortunate, but it's a very physical game.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Well, once it goes, it goes, doesn't it lie, and
you can't get it back no matter how hard you try.
We're seeing how many players through their careers, you know,
go a season too long or try and post and
ultimately injury sends them into retirement. And then that's a
different mindset. As you said, neither of us are professional
sports people, but you know they'll try and keep on
going because that's all they really know, and sometimes it's
(35:48):
not the best thing for the team.
Speaker 12 (35:51):
I think with regard to that, look Johnson, my understanding
is he's been very shrewd with his money and smart
with it, so I don't think he's playing full of money.
He would like to obviously be part of the first
side to win a title, but you know, the body,
the mine may be saying yes, but I think his
body's saying no.
Speaker 7 (36:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
I think you're right lyle. Nice to hear from you
this evening here on Sports Talk. Let's go to the texts,
and there are buckets of them. As always races this evening,
they gets sad news about Storm and Norman he's a legend.
What about the Spanish Spaniard trifector? Yeah, how crazy was
that yesterday? Basically, schedule a sports event on a Sunday
(36:33):
night or Monday morning, and Spain just collected all of them.
Another one says this Warriors are useless. Until they stop
acting like superstars, they'll never have a chance. Another one says,
this is our season. Stop making excuses you, one eyed.
Warriors fans need to get some perspective. That's from Hamish.
A couple more get to after the break here on
(36:53):
news talk zeb I'm going to crunch some numbers while
we take a break as well. See what usually gets
you into the eight. It's twelve away from eight on talk,
(37:23):
it is nine away from eight on news talks. He
still got time to squeeze in another call or a
couple more texts on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
or nine two nine two. Barnsey says this generally thirty
points does an allegate take two from the last round? Bye?
So from twenty one points when he formed six to
be realistic or twenty nine b enough got to beat
(37:44):
teams below us and two above Who knows it's the Warriors,
thank you buzzy. Yeah, I'm just looking at last season's
ladder for comparison's sake. Obviously, the Warriors won sixteen last
year had thirty eight points. Rabbito's missed out in the
playoffs in ninth on thirty with twelve wins. The Raiders
got in with thirty two points with thirteens. So at
(38:08):
that point, say thirteen is gonna be enough. They're gonna
have to win six of their last seven, although as
we mentioned that the buy at the ends it's two points,
so five of their last seven actual games they're probably
going to have to win to make sure they're entirely safe.
I haven't quite looked at previous seasons to see if thirty,
thirty two or whereabouts you need to get to make
(38:31):
the eight. Paul see that, Sorr, how much is this?
Paul Syd should have would have won those games. The
Warriors are not winners. Look at the results guarantee they'll
finish about twelfth. Another one says, you don't want to
read an opposing opinion, they don't have the mindset. Okay,
varied views coming in on the text line tonight. Michael
(38:53):
problem is only other team they drew with is manly
and the Warriors have an odd number of points and
worse points difference. What the Warriors really need is to
other mid table teams to have a drawer, as Warriors
have a better points difference than most the others. If
that happens, they could get through with two losses. That's
from Michael. Thank you very much for the texts on
that front. Yeah, I haven't crunched numbers. We've seen who's
(39:14):
got the tougher run in of some of those teams
around them, Obviously the Raiders. This week Blooms is a
pretty significant game. Given the Raiders or eleventh worries and
twelfth they drop. That the Raiders go two points clear,
it becomes very very tricky to reel them in from
that point. But I haven't quite gamed out how many
or how tough some of the other teams around that
(39:38):
top eight. Well, they're runs homes run run homes runs
home are actually because some might have trickier ones than others.
It's going to be tight. You get the sense, you know,
they win this week. Maybe when the should win the
Tigers and Eels in the coming week, given those two
very very low teams on the ladder, they get a
(40:00):
bit of a roll on. That's three wins in a row,
which was talking about possibilities at this point in time,
but it doesn't feel entirely out of reach. The thing
is what the Warriors this season is that never have
they really felt like they've actually got going. Never have
they They've got to run for a couple of games
(40:20):
here and there, but they started poorly. How do we run?
Came up a little bit and then gone down again,
and then it's been one game here, one game there,
And of course the lowest at the low was that
diabolical afternoon on the Gold Coast, And when all was
said and done in the season, it probably feels like
that might be the afternoon where the Warrior's final hopes
actually ended, not mathematically but just in terms of their
(40:44):
actual campaign to make the top eight. This season is
always next year. Then I make it this year. Of course,
James Fisher, Harris coming along next year, They're gonna lose
Adam fanoa blake. The interesting thing is we've touched on
a couple of times to night Shawn Johnson. Did the
Warriors re sign him come twenty twenty five? Had a
(41:05):
couple of injury breaks the year. They've already got three
other halves on the books. Jick Cleary is coming in
next year. Who knows when he's going to be first
grade ready. I think it's gonna be a long project
with him, but that's going to be another decision for
Andrew Webster and Cameron George to sit around and decide
whether to re sign him for next season. First jobs
(41:29):
first is beating the Raiders this weekend. I think Jamal
Foggerty is back for them this week, which makes things
a little bit trickier for the Warriors as well. Not
often they get a late Friday game either, and having
looked at having been to Camber it there are much
more pleasant places to be on a Friday night than Canberra.
So we'll see how that one goes for the Warriors
(41:51):
on ten o'clock Friday night. A couple of text to close.
Even if the Warriors when they are about four teams
around the eighth, it will be close. Yeah. Looking at
that ladder right now, let's say the list season Cowboys
are on twenty two, Dragon's twenty two nights, twenty Raiders
twenty Warriors nineteen. That is a huge block to get
(42:11):
past on the Warriors run home. They're gonna have to
need a couple of those teams to lose. Michael see's
this final text of the show. Tonight, AB's on Saturday
Afternoon Rugby. Yes, boy, interesting to see what team Scott
Robertson cooks up for that fixture against Fiji. Mo Over
chat about that Tomorrow Night's on the program as well.
(42:32):
Set of origin tomorrow night as well. I throw that
out tomorrow night. Is they not actually still care about
stat of origin? We'll discuss that tomorrow night. My thanks
Anemelo search. We're back seven o'clock tomorrow night and Vadarci
on Sports Talk Tony. Here's your news after this, Marcus Afterwards.
