Good evening and welcome into Monday night sports Talk on
News Talks edb August nineteen. Happy birthday to Dallas Seymour
and one of our greatest ever halfbacks, Sid Going was
also born on this date, nineteen forty three. Supercid, as
they called him, passed away earlier this year. I'm Jason
finehow producer as Anny McDonald. We're here till eight talking

(00:45):
sport with you. On Friday, the All Blacks hop on
a plane and via Sydney, they're off to Johannesburg where
they'll meet the spring Box in the early hours of Sunday,
September first, New Zealand time. Then they'll head to Cape
down and do it all again the following weekend. How
are we feeling about this? How are we feeling about
two tests against the reigning world champions and aside who,

(01:10):
if anything, have got better since that win in Paris
at the back end of last year. I'm keen to
read your pulse on this. We'll get the view shortly
of former spring Box half back Kevin Putt, and then
I am keen to hear your views and on a
wider leans, I guess you'd call it. How do you
rate the All Black season so far? Five games, four wins,

(01:32):
the one lost to Argentina and Wellington. Keen to read
your pulse on that as well. Also tonight, what is
next for Israel? Dis ong you a loss at UFC
three to five yesterday was his third defeat in four fights.
What does the future look like for Israel? But also
for Kui Carter France who's closing in now want a

(01:53):
shot at the flyweight title after a very very impressive
victory yesterday. Going to chat to our combat sports expert
Chris Reeve on that Shawn Johnson going to play his
final home game for the Warriors on Friday night, and
news just through they are renaming Mount Smart Sean Johnson
Stadium for Friday night. That is the name of the
venue on Friday, Sean Johnson Stadium. Well, here's some of

Speaker 2 (02:51):

the tansy the chance to to.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Turnover fat doesn't.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Matter, It's over.

Speaker 5 (03:00):
It's All Blacks heartbreak in the City of Loves the.

Speaker 6 (03:04):
Old Shoes, South Africa.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
When the Rugby.

Speaker 7 (03:08):
World Cup to eleven in the World Cup.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Final Yes I later this week, the All Blacks will
had to South Africa to face the spring Box for
the first time since that game the twenty twenty three
Rugby World Cup Final Alice Park, Johannesburg, then Newland's in
Cape Town. To discuss prospects for this mouth watering matchup
across two matches, Let's bring in former spring Box half
back and astute rugby observer Kevin Pat. Kevin the spring

(03:36):
box so far this year, a comfortable win over Wales,
a narrow win and then a narrow defeat when they
played Ireland, a romp against Portugal, and two fairly straightforward
victories over Australia. What have you made first of all
of South Africa's year so far?

Speaker 8 (03:53):
Oh, you know, I actually find it quite exciting at
the moment. They are a stock standard. You know, Historically
there have been big men that have looked to beat
the heck out of people. That hasn't changed in any way.
But they've just added a few strings to their bow.
You've got to believe. And we're not necessarily going to

(04:14):
talk about Tony Brown in this process, but that just
expanded their game. They're a lot more inventive. You're seeing
some excitement. The depth of their squad is to be
envy throughout the world. Yeah, look, i'd be scared and
Joe Burg, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I want to talk about Tony Brown. You can see
his fingerprints on this team.

Speaker 8 (04:36):
Well look, I'm always scared to give the credit to
someone because the only other guy that's as innovative as
him is actually Rusty Erasmus, who's all you know, he's
bonkers anyway comes up with weird stuff. You know, he
was one of the originals that when they played in Blomfontein,
he had guys up on the stadium roof giving signals

(04:56):
to the guys for moves with colors and that from
you know, Oh, he's bonkers. So it could be Russy himself.
But I've got to believe because of the inventiveness back
line work that it's got to be brown.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Is this then a better spring box side than the
one that won the World Cup last year?

Speaker 8 (05:16):
Yep. Yeah, I've got absolutely no doubt about that, mainly
because there's a strong degree of belief that they've built
a group of and you've got to be careful how
you say this, but I mean they have harder selection
issues because they've got to make sure that they're contingent
is appropriate in terms of some of their government selection drives.

(05:40):
So they've got such a depth of player in there,
and yet they can still consistently play exceptionally well. And
I mean obviously they ranked number one in the world
at the moment. Yeah, I think they're in great shape.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
How then, Kevin, should all Blacks fans be feeling about
the prospect of playing them? Twice in two very iconic
arenas away from home, with what will no doubt be
a rabid South Africa fan base behind them.

Speaker 8 (06:08):
Well, look, we were also coming off a fantastic performance
against Arjie's. You know, we had to have a loss
to potentially turn it around, and let's hope we leave
that away. But Johannesburg will be the test, that will
be the massive one. It's altitude, it's a very close
Afrikaans environment, it is tough, it is tough paying there.

(06:32):
New Lance is more like you know, heading back to
Eden Park. So really this is the one to judge
them on. This first one will be all good and
I would say that the New Zealand public, like the
South African public, are salivating the opportunity for.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
This absolutely so in that case, then in terms of
the strength of South Africa and how good they are
at the moment and as you've outlined, probably better than
they were last year, do you think if you offered
Scott robertson a win and a loss on this tour
he would take it.

Speaker 8 (07:05):
Look, I can't get into the head of the guys.
You know, it's not out. Would we offer it to
New Zealand public. Yes, I think we'd bleomen take it.
You know, seriously, Joe Burt is incredibly hostile to play
out and I'm not building it up. I've played multiple
games myself there and we just used to love it

(07:25):
because no one wanted to go there. You can't breathe
for the first ten minutes with the altitude, and it's
a tough game.

Speaker 9 (07:35):
It's a tough, tough game.

Speaker 8 (07:36):
But that aside. This is also now looking at number
one and number three in the world. This is the
Southern Hemisphere. Duwel off to see, you know, World Cup
one game. Okay, we can put that behind us, but
this now is two games to show who really is,
you know, up there and working and this is so
important to Robinson and his whole crew there.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
How important was Saturday night, Kevin in terms of the
physicality that the All Blacks brought that they were lacking
a little bit in Wellington the previous week. I thought
it was that as they prepare for what will be
probably a step up in terms of physicality in the Republic.

Speaker 8 (08:12):
Well, it was the difference. It won the game, and
it didn't win the game. It absolutely smashed the game.
The Archies weren't in it that the question will be
You'll now be questioning who's going to turn up because
you know the South Africans turn up every time they
play with that. Will New Zealand turn up with that?
And will that be enough? There's also got to be
that little edge. I mean, what I like about New

(08:33):
Zealand wasn't just the physicality, was they had a little
bit of an edge about their tactical components. There was
a couple of chip kicks early over that you know
you hadn't seen stop that rush defense. It was clever,
clever stuff. I guess the question that comes in is
where was that in the first test? You have you
got a player team to work out how to beat them.
I'm sure that their tacticians are a little bit better

(08:56):
than that. So I'm really looking at this first game
because you know what's going to come from South Africa,
which New Zealand team's going to pitch up.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
Indeed, were also in quite a quite an unusual situation
now with South African sites now no longer in Super rugby,
there are about I think seven players in this all
black squad who have never played rugby in South Africa. Well,
South Africa's absence from super rugby play into their hands
when they face the All Blacks with you know, slightly
less experience in those conditions.

Speaker 8 (09:25):
Jeez, I never thought of that. That's I mean, that's
a bizarre you know, on the history of our two countries.
That's a bizarre stat No, that's a very very good point.
And my again, if it was Newland's first up, wouldn't
be worried about it in any form this altitude, the
additional test on the lungs and the rest of it. Yeah,

(09:46):
that opens a whole new case. Yeah, that's interesting. It's
going to be a tough one for some of the boys,
but I've got to be honest, I'd be less worried
about struggling with air and more worried about struggling with
some of those South African forwards whipp dealing to me.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Okay, great summary, Kevin, We're just looking. You've made me
salivate even more for the opening test and Alice Park
and just started two weeks. Thanks so much for joining
us with your analysis tonight. Now, Thank you, Kevin. Kevin Putt,
former Springbox half back and astute analyst of the game. Yeah,
that that point at the end was one that kind
of occurred to me over the weekend as well. In fact,
I think I saw it written somewhere or it was reported.

(10:21):
And it's obvious, isn't it. When you don't play South
African sides in Super rugby, you don't have to go
to South Africa. Whereas you know from nineteen ninety six
up until when did they leave after COVID you know
you went every year, So there was never an All
Blacks player who went to South Africa for the first
time as an All Black to play rugby. That all
gone previously, and in the professional era, I mean that

(10:44):
all gone previously in super rugby sides. So that's another
little layer of complication. If you heard from Kevin part
keen to hear how you are feeling about this upcoming
two test tour, oh eight hundred and eighty ten's have
been about this, would you take Would you take if
I offered it to you? Would you take a win
and a loss? If right now I said, right, well,

(11:05):
win won and lose one over there, would that be
a satisfactory outcome for you? Or should we? As we
always do, expect the All Black to win every Test
they play, regardless of who it's against and where it is,
because normally that's how I feel. I go into every
All Blacks Test, doesn't matter where it is, doesn't matter
the occasion, doesn't matter who it's against, thinking we're going

(11:26):
to win. But South Africa are clearly a very very
good side right now and the All Blacks are still
just trying to find their groove under their new coaching regime.
What if we were to lose both tests? That's one
possible outcome. You know, we could go over there and
lose them both. Where would your head be at then?

(11:47):
I don't think we will. I certainly hope we win
them both. I hope the All Blacks when every Test
they play, I also expect them to. But there's this
little cavegat with these two. They've been sitting there in
the middle of the year sort of waiting waiting for us,
waiting for our analysis. As Kevin said, I think we
should be extremely excited about the prospect of watching the

(12:10):
All Blacks take on the spring Box on their home
patch twice and Alice Park in particular. That first Test
match will be so instructive about where we are in
comparison to them. One thing we know we're going to
get over. There is physicality. South African sides bring that
as are not negotiable, which is why this Saturday just

(12:31):
Gone was really important, demonstrating that the All Blacks can
muscle up and confront opposing forward packs, win the set
peace battle and establish a platform for our backs. But
much as Argentina have always been a physical side, South
Africa will be a step up again our eight hundred

(12:51):
and eighty ten eighty. Want to read your pulse on
this as I say, we've played the spring Box five
times in the last two years. Twenty twenty two very
mediocre showing in a twenty six to ten defeat and
in bomb Bella that almost cost Ian Foster his job,
but for the fight back to win thirty five twenty
three the next weekend at Allas Parky would have been gone.

(13:13):
A good thirty five twenty win at Mount Smart last year,
then a record thirty five seven defeat at Twickenham just
before the Rugby World Cup. I'd almost eraised that from
my memory, and then of course the agony of a
one point loss in the World Cup final. So what
are you hoping for this year? What are you expecting?
They're two different questions. Right, once with your heart, once

(13:33):
with your head, keen for your views and just as
a second re issue. How do you rate the All
Black season so far? Five tests, four ones and the
loss of the Pumas and Wellington? What grade are you
giving them? If you want to do that? Give them
a grade if you like, or a mark out of
ten eight hundred eighty ten eighty nine, two ninety two
one text twenty past seven. Back with your calls after this, no.

Speaker 6 (13:57):
Need for the TMO.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
We've got the breakdowns on sports talk call oh, eight
hundred eighty eight. News Talk said, firing go at Alice Park.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
That will do. It's the underseat.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
All backs under fire from all points of the globe
emerge with a thirty five twenty three win, A famous
win at Alice Park.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
It seems like years ago, doesn't it? Only a couple
of years ago? The win at Ellis Park. Our eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty talking some All Black spring box, Kevin,
I know you want to talk some league as well,
but shall we start with the rugby?

Speaker 10 (14:32):
Yep?

Speaker 4 (14:33):
Even Jesson, how are you?

Speaker 2 (14:34):
I'm very good, Kevin, Hey.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
Not too bad of course, As I said, for me,
it's like in rugby. It's the Yin and yen, the
Yin and Yan element. It's the all black South African
rible hands down. No, it's no buds. And of course
now with the since the South Afican side, I no
longer play. I believe there's an a mystique. If you

(14:57):
think where I'm coming from.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
I can I know exactly what you mean. There's no
familiarity to draw upon from super rugby. Kevin, You're did right,
but yeah it did day for me.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
I've always I'm not sure there's a many key with here,
but they will be like it's like that, where's that are? Okay?
I got you? You, I understand you, you understand me.
With the South Africans is like they it's the same
vibe that goes between back and forth. Yes, yes, but
at the I'm happy to I'm happy to say what

(15:29):
one one and one?

Speaker 2 (15:31):
You'll be happy with you? Yeah, I know. I think. Look,
I think if you offer me, offer me the choice
of one all or or a two year old defeat,
I think we'd all take the one all. I just
wonder whether people might might think that was settling a
little bit. But and I part of me thinks we
shouldn't expect them to win the All Black standards every
test they play. But the spring Boks at home are
a formidable beast, a very formidable beast.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
I agree with that. And of course it's like as
I said, I actually I've actually actually worked with a
few South Africans networks, so it's like it's like the
I actually treat the honored rivalry between us and this
Africans is much better than the Aussies because like m
and when.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Well, at least at least the South Africans have been
competitive recently. I can't say the same with the Australians.
What are you? What are your thoughts on the league?
Before we hit, before we move on?

Speaker 4 (16:22):
Okay, Friday night, I will be there in enemy territory
in full color and full enemy color, because I'm a
Canary Boy through and through, and I'm not some Johnny
cum lately Canterborary Boys of of the Penrith Boys who's
recently joined our group, because I was my allegiance, because
I was actually born just after the eighty four premiership.

(16:43):
So that's why I've chosen the Canterbury So it's and
I believe I'm there some doggie supporters are still how
do you say it's lead past American legal drinking. I
still hold it grudge against the Warriors, do you know
what I mean?

Speaker 2 (16:59):
Yeah? And this actually I'm good on you for you're right,
there are some doggy supporters. Are you actually able to
go to Mount Smart in your bulldog's.

Speaker 7 (17:07):
Gear full full well almost full slipping regalia to kitch
you in trouble and not not to kill you within trouble?

Speaker 2 (17:18):
The network men, Kevin, I know exactly what you mean.
Enjoy yourself. Mate. At Sean Johnson Stadium as it's going
to be called on Friday night, they're renaming it in
honor of Sean Johnson his final home game. Thanks Kevin,
good to chat to your mate. No piney, says Kevin.
No another Kevin one win one loss. No, we need

(17:39):
to win both, says Kevin from mutter mutter, Thanks Kevin.
Not a lot of unequivocal thought there. I know what
you mean, and maybe I am settling if I say, hey,
one and one's okay. I don't even know if I
feel that way. I actually feel like I want us
to I want us to win both. I feel like
we should win both but I feel like we could
lose both good they Chris, Yeah.

Speaker 11 (17:59):
Good Pony Yeah, go on, Kevin. I'm a bulldog man too.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
They're all coming out. They're all coming out tonight.

Speaker 11 (18:05):
I was lucky enough to see him win a Perliminary
Final live when I was working in Sydney a bit
in that great run in the eighties and they used
to go to go to Belmore over a lot and
what's that great side with Lamb and Co. But hey,
you just played that clip that I was going to
talk about at Alice Park last year. I mean, we
have one more test at Ellis Park than any other nation.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yeah, that's a good point. That's a good point. Yet
it's not unfamiliar to us, is it. It's not unfamiliar
to us. It's not common, but it's not unfamiliar.

Speaker 11 (18:37):
No, No, that's right, Jason. I think we won nine times.
And the other thing is that the spring Box are
always under a bit of pressure there because at the
altitude they're expected to win. You know that they're expected
to win. But I mean that test last year, well
we did it save Ian Foster's career. I don't know.
Apart from that win, the only disgusting thing I had

(18:59):
about that game was when Jeff Wilson shoved the microphone
under Ian Foster and said, and will he be all
back coach next week? And he retored it and stuck
it up Wilson and said, I don't know. He said
that I'm gonna have a good night to night and
good on him, though that was a terrible question.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
Well, I think I don't know if you've watched the
All Blacks doco on NJR Plus, but he Ian Foster
admitted that he went into that test match at Alice
Park thinking that it was highly possible that that was
it for him, and he said, look, I'm going to
enjoy it regardless because it may be my last one.
And depending on who you believe, Chris, And there's all
sorts of rumor around about this, none of it which

(19:34):
has ever really been substantiated. But my understanding is that
they were that he would have lost his job if
they've lost that game.

Speaker 11 (19:43):
Yeah, that's pertually, that's pretty tough actually to put him
on the line of the Earl's Park.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
But yeah, I mean, you got it, and it was
really I don't know if you remember, it was really
just the last ten minutes they got a couple of tries.
They were down there, they were losing, you know, and
one of the hardest places to win, you know, But
you're right about the and like as it happened, they
won the game. He kept his job and he came
within one point of winning the Rugby World Cup. Just
on the Ellis Park thing, it's interesting. I'm just having
a look here. That was a win. The previous time

(20:08):
we were there was twenty fifteen, and we won that
one as well, twenty seven twenty. But of course the
twenty fifteen All Blacks were just a juggernaut. In twenty
fourteen they lost twenty seven twenty five, but in twenty
thirteen they won thirty eight twenty seven. So three of
the last four at Alice Park, Chris, you're quite right,
the All Blacks have won.

Speaker 11 (20:26):
Yeah, they have. And the only thing that's like the
only thing that would concern would concern me is that
that Springbock team wasn't as good as what they are
now and we were a more experienced team then last year.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
Yes, yes, no, yeah, you're right, and with a coaching
group that have been together for a while, some big
players who are now no longer there Yeah, it's a
fascinating prospect. Okay, okay, give it to me right now. Chris,
if you had to bet everything you own on the
first test, what would you be calling as the result?

Speaker 11 (21:00):
Probably six to eight points in favor of the box.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Yeah, mate, I'd land in the same place. Good to
check Chris, Let's star it again when the series is on.
Good to talk to you, Paul. Are you confident? Are
you optimistic? Pessimistic? Ho are you feeling about these two tests?

Speaker 9 (21:19):
Pretty optimistic, Jase. To be honest and good, I mean
to you, I did. If I take last week's first half,
we held on to the ball. We're a great running team,
even though we're pretty young. When you're looking at locks
in some of the positions, we put on a lot

(21:41):
of points. And to be honest with you, I think
we can do that and everyone I say, Argentina, we
could do that against these big fellows as well, and
we get up there. The second half of last week's game,
everyone wanted to kick. I even saw a couple of
Lucy's putting grubbers through and we only scored seven points.

(22:06):
So if we put the boot away and we just
run at them, I think we'll tie them out. They
don't play on that high velve often, don't they.

Speaker 4 (22:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (22:21):
Often. I mean you look at where they're being they
have to go back and adjust as well.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Yeah, that's a good point. Yeah, that's a good point, Paul,
because you're right, they're not playing there every week, are they,
because either're playing down in Cape Town or wherever it
or up and up in the you know, their current
professional competition as the sides are involved in the Northern Hemisphere.
So no, it's a good point. You're right, they have
to adjust to Yeah.

Speaker 9 (22:44):
So if we put the boot away, Jase, I we
can wear home. I really do. And even if we're
going side to side, make the big boys run and
then send it out wide. And if you look at
what Island do to them on the rush descend, so
it used to be called the flatline, which is actually offside.

(23:05):
They stand deep and by the time they hit that
advantage line, they're at full pace. And that's how they
used to combat that. And I've gone and had a
look at some of the stuff that Island when they
were on top of their game and what they used
to do. That's how they used to combat that. They
never stood flat against them. They used to stand deep,
so the guy was like twenty five meters away, the

(23:26):
winger was almost fifty meters away, and by the time
that ball was coming out, they were at full pace
and everyone is standing.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
Yeah someone else, Yeah, someone else has pointed out exactly
the same thing, Paul, the way that the Irish out
smarted the box defense. And yeah, hoping that that. I'm sure.
I'm sure the All Blacks coaches have had eyes on.

Speaker 9 (23:51):
It to catch pass.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Paul. Love it mate, you always you always managed to
simplify things down to terms that even I can understand. Mate.

Speaker 1 (23:59):
That's good.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
I like it. I like it.

Speaker 8 (24:01):
A great job.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
Oh, good on your full Thanks mate, always great to
chat to you. A couple more texts before we move on.
I'm expecting two nil to the spring Box. I will
accept oh sorry, expecting two nil to the All Blacks.
I'll accept one. All We've won five of the last
six of Cape Town, dating back to the ninety five
World Cup Alice Park obviously the bigger challenge All Black,
so farther You're a B plus. Thank you, Corey, appreciate it.

(24:24):
Stu says, I hope one and one, but I expect
zero and two. Let's be honest. South Africa are way
ahead of us today. Their ford powers beyond us thanks
to At the end of the twenty twenty three finals,
says Gordon, the box knew they only scraped in by
the hair of their chin. Their body language told the
whole story. They'll be worried about the ABS. If they
get cocky with their present success, they will lose. Thank you, Gordon.

(24:45):
Mike great, says Kevin. So far forty percent Scratchy wins
over England. Should never have lost to the Permas forty
percent Max. Thank you Kevin and Piney. Did you not
listen to David Neathy when he spoke to you? No,
All Black will ever go into any Test match thinking
they will lose. I can't believe you're suggesting to nil.
We can be nervous, yes, but never ever worry about

(25:06):
lou That's not our mindset. Thanks March. Ye know David
Neathy would be very, very annoyed with my suggestion that
one all or even zero and two would be okay.
Thanks for all your calls and your texts. We're going
to talk a lot more about these test matches before
they arrive Sunday, the first of September early hours, Ellis Park, Sunday,

(25:31):
the eighth of September early hours in Cape Town, twenty
six away from eight not to be for Israel adis
sonya at UFC three oh five yesterday in Perth.

Speaker 6 (25:43):
Stall good africauntry with yours rebets the man at what
any five?

Speaker 4 (25:51):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (25:52):
Israel adissagna submitted by incumbent champion Drecas Duplessy in the
fourth round of their About Elsewhere. Flyweight Chai Cutter France
spoiled the Perth homecoming for Steve Erseg, knocking him out
in the first round, and Dan Hooker has earned himself
a spot in the lightweight division's top five after beating

(26:12):
Poland's Mettius Gamrod by split decision. Let's bring in our
combat sports expert from the New Zealand Herald, Chris Reeve. Chris,
how do you assess? First of all, Israel's defeat by
Drickis Duplessy yesterday?

Speaker 12 (26:27):
Good question, Piney, Yeah, it was an interesting one. Israel
looked a lot better in this fight than he did
in his previous fight to Sean Strickland. He was looking
a lot bigger, a lot faster, a lot just a
lot sharper in general. The fight was actually starting to
trend in his direction too. He was down to one
on the scorecards coming into the fourth round, but he

(26:49):
was really starting to take over the fight in the
third and fourth round. Just happened to get caught and
tricks duplessy. I mean, you have to credit the guys
finishing in thinks as soon as he saw that, Israel
was a little bit a little bit stung. Maybe he
just chased him, dragged him to the ground and didn't
let him go from there. It was a really really
smart finish from him.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
Was it a mistake by Israel?

Speaker 12 (27:13):
Well, personally, it's hard to say. I didn't see what
was going on there. Israel was pretty pretty disappointed in
himself in a mistake. He made it on the ground. Obviously,
I can't see what's going on down there with the
hands and everything. But if Israel said it was a mistake,
I'd have to believe him, all right.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
So what is your gut feel now about what is
next for him? That's three losses in his last four fights.
Is there any chance he'll call it a day or not?

Speaker 12 (27:43):
No, I don't think so. It seemed like he enjoyed
himself too much. This time around, he enjoyed the whole
experience of fight camp, being back in there doing the media,
doing all the little bits and pieces that come with
the job, and he said afterwards that you know he'll
be back. It's just really interesting to kind of place
where he goes from here. This is a guy who's

(28:05):
last twelve fights in the UFC have been title fights.
It's not really someone that you think won't be fighting
for a title in his next one, but that's kind
of position he's in now, So it'll be really interesting
to see what sort of opponents he takes in his
next fight, whether it's a title eliminator, whether it's just
a big name or yeah, where he goes from here.

Speaker 2 (28:28):
He's thirty five, now, is that old for a UFC fighter?

Speaker 3 (28:32):
Yes?

Speaker 8 (28:33):
And no.

Speaker 12 (28:34):
You do see some guys fighting into their forties. I
think it really just comes down to how good the
fighter feels, sort of physically and mentally and emotionally. You know,
it's a pretty pretty hectic sport to be involved in,
and as long as you're still one hundred percent permitted
to it, I think you can just keep going for
as long as you know, you feel like you're physically
capable of competing with the best in the world.

Speaker 2 (28:56):
We'll wait to see what happens there. Just a word
on Kai Car of France, impressive yesterday. Be interested in
your view and what the future might hold for him.

Speaker 12 (29:04):
If that man a title shot. I mean coming in
off over a year sideline. You know, he had to
deal with some concussion issues and had six months where
he wasn't doing any contact in the gym. To come
back and win like that against the guy who just
challenged for the title and you know, arguably beat the

(29:26):
current champion. But I don't think there's any other option
for Kay at this point than a title shot. He's
number four in the world. The only other guy who
the current champion hasn't beat that is ranked above him
comes in off a very questionable split decision when over
cut a front. So they either run that one back
or Kai gets the title shot. That's that's my opinion anyway.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
And what about Dan Hooker? What about he seems completely
mad to me, but but he won.

Speaker 12 (29:56):
Oh he's a wild man, isn't he. That was just
classic Dan Hooker. The man loves a fight. Anyone watching
would have seen between I think the second and third
rounds where he just gives off the most kind of
I don't know what you'd call it, spine chilling laugh
when he says he loves what he's doing and I
guess beat Matteosh Gamrock, how he did you know stuff?

(30:19):
And most of the takedowns threatening with a gallatine choke
and really just laying the power on Gamrock and you know,
having that striking success that he did. That was probably
the best version of Dan Hooker we've seen in a
long time. And yeah, not that long ago people were
telling this guy to retire and now he's on a
three fight win streak, should be in the top five

(30:41):
come this week, and yeah, I mean he can go
anywhere from here. So it's exciting to see what the
UFC haven't saw for him next.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
And just to finish UFC three five. Was it a success?
Was it a good event?

Speaker 12 (30:55):
I thought it was a pretty exciting event. Lots of
good fights on their hometown crowd probably would have liked
to see him a few more of the results go
their way, but they happens in sports, and he's gonna
go to enjoy the experience.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
And thanks for your expertise, Chris, great to get.

Speaker 12 (31:12):
To you anytime, mate.

Speaker 2 (31:14):
Thanks Chris. Chris Reeve from the New Zealand Herald read
him at NZ Herald dot co dot m Z Shane
thanks for holding. Did you watch Israel yesterday?

Speaker 5 (31:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (31:21):
I did, mate, Yeah, so I wanted to bring you
up about the ill Blacks and the and the warriors.
But we're running at a time, so that's all good.
But I watched it as Ralph and look he looked
christ for mate. He looked really good. But I'll tell
you what turned the clock back a bit. I lost
faith him ever since lockdown. You know, when he had
that barney with the New Zealand government about you know,

(31:42):
him not being able to train while we were in lockdown,
and he stopped presenting the New Zealand flag and he
started presenting what is the Nigerian flag? You know, like
I lost a little bit of faith in them since then.
But when I saw him on Sunday, I thought, shit,
he's he's looking really good. He's looking really and and

(32:04):
he in the fourth round he had he had Duplessly
on the ropes, Mate, he had him, but then Duplessly
just just just got him in the right position and
got him to tap.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
What do you reckon he'll do?

Speaker 1 (32:16):
Now?

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Do you reckon he'll laning around?

Speaker 3 (32:18):
Well, I don't know. Like you said to the last caller,
is thirty five old for being a kickboxer. Like, I
don't know, mate, Like to be fair, he's probably got
what like two or three, four, maybe five years left
in him. I don't know. But like you say, he's,
like your previous caller said, he's had a lot of
title fights. So I reckon he's gonna have to he's
gonna have to come back down to reality and he's

(32:40):
gonna have to work his way back up. But I
just don't think he's got time.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
Yeah, I still think he's a big name though Shane,
isn't he You know, he is still Israel Desanya, you
know which I think they're He's still he's still.

Speaker 3 (32:52):
A crowd puller and and he's still an amazing fighter.
I won't take that away from him. But you know,
I reckon, outside of Adasaanya, I'd like to see Strickland
and Dupless Sea fight that that that that fight would
would be at a crowd puller.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
Yeah, I think that's the next one, isn't Isn't that
the next one? Isn't that That's what we're shitting ourselves
up for.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Here, pioneer. It has to be, It has to be,
it has to be the next fight.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Good on your shame, Great to chat Mike callback any time,
Love chatting to you. Oh eight one hundred and eighty ten.
Had he got a time for a couple more calls?
I think in a ricato?

Speaker 10 (33:23):
Hey, good good Jason, Hey can you hear me? Okay?

Speaker 2 (33:27):
I can?

Speaker 10 (33:27):
Yeah, fantastic. Hey, look I watched that z He fight. Yeah, mate,
I haven't been that peied off in the fight since
Bloody to a lost Lennox Lewis back in the.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Back, what what why?

Speaker 10 (33:43):
It was just a build up. It was just a
trash talking that was going on, and you know who
was the African champ and with the all Blacks playing
South Africa, I just thought, come on, is you got
to do this? You know man? You know he's normally
he normally talks walk, walk and things like that. To
be honest, look, is he had that fight? He had
that It was just like he said, I don't know,

(34:04):
but I just felt like in the ladder around looked
at it tired. Even though he looked really crisp in
those earlier rounds. I just felt like he was just
prowing to being hit, especially in those latter rounds.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
Can yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 10 (34:17):
And it was just disappointing how it ended, because you know,
he weathered the bloody, the leg cakes and and and
the and the and the you know, the punishment that
what's his name? And I did not expect that, you know,
for him for for him to tap out. Look, I
think the next I think thirty five is not old.

(34:38):
If you look at Mark Hunt, you know he was
fighting in his forties. But I think for if you
look at is he he's really cleaned out that whole division.
But the only two people that he needs to fight,
to think to make sure you know he puts numbers
on all those names, is he needs to run it
back with with what's his name Durkus, And also he
needs to he needs strick one. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Yeah, I just want to ask you, now, what's tell
me that's my what? What what is the likelihood of
Israel getting fights against those two? Because the next fighter
is I said to uh said to previous caller, the
next fight seems to be Strickland against dou Place, doesn't
so what does Israel just have to wait in line.

Speaker 10 (35:22):
To be honest, Look, we we know Daniel White. You
know that's his price, pet doesn't he and and and
in the UFC is about business. And he's such a
huge name, you know, Asana is a hue. He is
the middleweight sort of you know he is. He is
a huge name. He's a crowd puller. And and like
you said, his last four fights had been toddal fights,
So so I I won't be surprised if he fights

(35:45):
the winner of of Strickland and Dorkis and if he
gets if he gets through those two the ultimate fight,
and I think it will be the pinnacle of Adiasana
would be to run it back with Alex Prera mhm.
And and that that will be an ultimate ending for
for for both, for both parties. Yeah, but he's such
a he's such a crowd puller. He's money, you know,

(36:07):
Israel and his son is money. And well whoever he
fights as similar to the sort.

Speaker 8 (36:11):
Of condomic grip here, He's always goin to pull him
that money.

Speaker 10 (36:14):
And Dana White knows that.

Speaker 8 (36:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
Yeah, Dana White's nothing if not aware of the finances.
Thanks RICARDA good to chat mate, Thanks for expert your
expertise on this too, I have appreciated it. Yeah, so
so that Yeah, that, as I've said to the last
couple of calls, that that feels from what I've read
to be the next the next one is duplicity. Trek
is duplicy against Sean Strickland. Both of those guys have

(36:36):
beaten Israel Ardissanya. Now, so what happens then? What do you?
Let's let's like if he wins, for example, if he sorry,
if if duplesic wins, let's go that way. So what
then Israel fights Strickland again for the right for the
right to face duplessy again, or does he just fight
duple s again? Is he that big of a crowd pull.

(36:58):
I'm not sure how this all works. I mean, people
will know, but so I don't think there's any There's
no structure to it that I'm aware of. I think
they just side. As Riccardo said on what's going to
pull the most eyeballs and therefore the most cash. And
Israel is a big name, bigger than the other two,
probably bigger than the other two. So I guess he
gets the opportunity to to not pick and choose, but

(37:21):
to certainly have a big say. Jesus says, don't forget
as he fights at least five times a year. Well,
the thing is this was his first fight, wasn't it,
Jess for eleven months, So there's that in the equation
as well. Anyway, more to come on this, good to
chat some UFC, good to chat something different and educate
myself on this stuff. I have to say just before
we leave. Much as people I guess of my vintage,

(37:45):
I'm I'm in my fifties. You may be around there
or but older, perhaps for a bit younger. It's hard,
I know for a lot of us to accept UFC
as a genuine sport. But let me tell you it
is massive with the under thirties, enormous with anybody or
with a lot of people under thirty. It's not going away.

(38:09):
If anything, it is getting bigger. Thirteen to eight Back
in a secon with Pinety's Power Rankings.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Ladies Power Rankings.

Speaker 2 (38:22):

Let's go ten ten of the spring Box in a
touch it goes and on March the World champions. Now
I've put them down the bottom. I know they're playing
very well, but I'm just trying to jinx them. They're

(38:42):
formers looking very ominous, isn't it. Nine nine's the Warriors
fourteen unto points and at full.

Speaker 13 (38:51):
Time here at Brookvale, Tho've taken down the Warriors twenty
four points to ten.

Speaker 4 (39:07):
But he is going to be the winner and he
claims it again and Aid and Wall does not like that.

Speaker 2 (39:12):
He just can't seem to get the better of his
rival Alex She. That's twice that's happened the Olympics, and

Speaker 5 (41:44):
Yeah, they're pretty good. Actually, I can't really complain. The
spring box took me by surprise. I mate, there's I'm
glad you explained that one, but no otherwise otherwise all
all an agreement here.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
I'm just trying. I'm just trying to jinx them. I
know they're very good. Yeah, they will need a lot
of that, mate, You've given their form, will they will?
Piney's power rankings back next Monday night, just before we
go to the break, du Plusy beat Strickland prior to this,
