the final day of June twenty twenty five. Happy birthday,
Mike Tyson, Happy birthday, Soneth Jayasuria. Happy birthday, Michael Phelps.
I'm Jason Fine Show producer Anny McDonald back alongside. We're
talking sport until eight stormy waters ahead for the Warriors
(00:48):
back to back defeats for the first time this season
on Saturday. But worse than that, two potentially very serious
knee injuries to two very important players. Luke Metcalf may
be out for the season with an ACL injury. Chance
Nikol Kluksta also waiting on scans. This with co captain
(01:10):
Mitch Barnett already ruled out for the rest of twenty
twenty five and Delan what Tennis lesni act back in
the casualty ward. So this list is getting a bit long.
If Metcalf is out, and it looks very much as
though he will be who replaces him, there are two
pretty obvious candidates. I think there may even be three,
but we're going to get the view of former Warrior
(01:32):
Mottu Tony shortly. Then your view is welcome. Just keen
to know. Well a couple of things. Really, how serious
a blow is this for the Warriors? Remembering that Luke
Metcalf has played every game this season in the seven
jumper and if he is ruled out and as I say,
all signs point to him being out for if not
the season, then certainly a decent chunk of the next
(01:52):
little bit of it. Who comes in? Who would you
be selecting in the seven jersey if it was your decision?
So Warriors Chat to start. Also tonight a career best
Formula one finish for Liam Lawson at the Astra Oh
the Austrian not the Australian, that's a different place. Austria

Speaker 2 (03:03):
So big blow for the Warriors with Luke Metcalfe leaving
the field during Saturday's lost to the Broncos at sun
Corp with what looked to be a pretty serious sort
of a knee injury.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
He's in trouble with at the moment metcalf Here, he
cannot He's not going to finish the game here. It
was a brutal shot. We're watching that in slow mob
at full speed. I was okay with it. I love Betcap,
don't get me wrong, but I was okay with that
from perk Good.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
We don't like seeing this. We don't like seeing her
half being carried off the field. So that was the
incident which led to Luke metcalf to parting. Look, I
don't think anybody is suggesting that it was a really
bad tackle got put on report. I haven't seen anything
today to suggest that it's going to result in a
ban or anything. The tackle was around the ribs and
as I say, that's what they're taught to do, or
(03:52):
as the commentator said. But it was the impact on
Luke Metcalfe's knee which was the major damage done to him.
He has started every game at half back this season.
He's the sides leading tri scorer with eight, he's the
leading point scorer with one hundred and seventeen and was
the NRLs dally M leader before voting went behind closed
(04:14):
doors a month ago. He is just so influential, so
important to the Warriors and a massive part of their
run into the top four over the first three or
four months of the season. So how big is this
and who replaces him? Let's chat this through with former
Warrior and Kiwi's utility Motu Tony Matu, thanks for your
(04:35):
time this evening on Sports Talk. Let's start with how
big this is? How big a blow is this to
the Warriors. If Luke Metcalf is indeed ruled out for
the season.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
He will be a huge blow for the Warriors. You know,
Metcalf's been playing, you know, understating it, but he's been
playing you know, really well this year and you know,
last week there was talk of you know, possibly being
an Origin Boger for you know, for Origin, and now
you know he's he's facing I guess, you know, possibly
a season ending injury. So it's a huge blow for
the Warriors. But there are options and the Warriors have
(05:08):
shown this year that they are resilient team. You know,
they need to get back on the horse quite quick,
but they have shown are resilience under Andrew Weber's coaching tenure.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Let's talk about the options for replacing him in a moment.
But in terms of what you've been most impressed by
with Luke Metcalf this season and also malto the fact
that he was given the seven jersey in the first place,
because last year, of course, when Shawn Johnson was out,
it was Tomati Martin who stepped in. There were you
surprised Luke was given that seven jumper? And what has
impressed you most about his performances.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Just as you know, coolness under pressure and his calmness.
And you know he built he grew into the seven
role and you know anyone will tell you that. You know,
that's familiar with the game. You know, halfback's probably the
most pressurized position, you know in an NRL. So you know,
letcuff done in our standing job to take on the
role and then grow and get better each game and
(06:01):
you know, to be leading a dat ha endpoint as
you mentioned, and he started to build a nice combination
you know with Chanel Harris Davida and really found his
place in the team. So you know, that's why a
disappointing and a devastating loss of you know, the reports
are accurate.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
So the two obvious replacements are to Marty Martin and
Tanner Boyd. Tanner Boyd hasn't near played a game this season.
Tomarrty Martin's had eight appearances off the bench, including each
of the last seven games. Is it more likely they'll
go with Tomarty because he's been in and around the
playing group this season, or is there a case to
bring in someone brand new and Tanna Boyd?
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Yeah, I think you know Tomorrow's got the I guess
the advantage of having played NRL, you know this year
for the Wiris. But Tanner Boyd has played seven and
a lot of seven n RL level. He's used to
guiding you know, the football team around, and he's also
got a very good kicking game and also a goalkicker.
So I think Tanner Boyd, who has also been playing
(07:01):
really well for the New South Wales Cup team is
is a favorite at this stage if the the news
is what we you know, what we've heard about Luton Metcuff.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
So you think that Andrew Webster would would favor Tanner
Boyd in the situation and say, okay, Tomighty, you're you're
an interchange player for us, we value you there. But
but Tanner boy gets the seven jumper.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Yeah, I think you know he's probably the favorite given
his form in the New South Wales Cup, but also
just as in RL experience leading a team around the park.
So and his game is probably more of a natural
fit and aligned with with Chanelle Harris, Divita as well.
So you know, I'm just my opinion, but I think, yeah,
it is Tanner Boyd at the stage.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So that combination, as you mentioned there is obviously very important.
And the Luke Metcalf, Chanelle Harris Tavita, you know, combo
this year has been very very cohesive. How quickly or
not are combinations like that able to be forged?
Speaker 4 (07:59):
I think, you know it won't take you know, too
much time for for Tanner Boyd if he is the
person to assume that seven year old you know, he's
got a abundance of NRL experience. But also you know
the team has you know, got its pieces in place,
you know, so now is quite comfortable in this role.
You know, Aaron Clark can link both sides of the
field in the middle. So and also you got wed Egan,
(08:20):
so do we do the Warriors playoff wed Egan a
little bit more than the than they did when Metcalf
was here. You know, those are some of the options
and also some of the strength that Tenner Boyd will
bring into the equation for the Warriors coaches.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Injuries are of course inevitable in rugby league, and the
Warriors have had to deal with absence this season for
why they didn't have Roger do I Vasischek or James Fisher,
Harris others have been in and out, But at the
moment we're looking multi at a situation where there might
be no Luke Metcalf, no Mitch Barnett, no Dellan won
Tennis Alesniak right now and probably no chance Nicokel Kluksta
for a while either with his own knee injury. Is
(08:55):
this list getting worryingly long? For Andrew Webster?
Speaker 4 (08:59):
It is getting long, But you know, one of the
I think the real strengths. You know, Andrew Webster's coaching
tenure of the warriors has been a men up, a
sort of approach. So you could even take it back
to you know, the start of the season when you
know people weren't sure how the Warriors would performed with Enfaneur,
Blake Gone, Sean Johnson, Jazz Sevanna, you know, so you
know the guys have really stepped up, and you know,
(09:22):
knowing the Warriors coaches, they'll be expecting, you know, the
young guys who do get an opportunity or guys who
haven't been in the NRL squad that often this year
to step up and also make an impact.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
So they're going to buy next, which gives them a
bit of time to kind of, I guess, work out
what they're going to do. Then in July they play
the Tigers, the Knights, and the Titans. Tigers and Titans
at home nights away. Those three teams are all in
the sort of lower echelons of the table. It seems
like a more comfortable run, but as July quite important
given the injury list and the fact that you guys
are going to have to come in.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
Yeah, I think, you know, rather than looking at you know,
there is a favorable sort of a run. You know,
there are no game in the NRL is an easy
game or given. But you know, those teams, like you say,
in the bottom half of the table. But you know,
I think the Warriors will just need to focus on
on their performance because when they perform well on the
matter on you know, who's on the field or not.
(10:14):
You know, there are charts in every NRL game and
they've shown that this year with like you mentioned, some
of the guys that haven't been playing and have been injured.
So the Warriors would just need to give back to
what's works for them at the beginning of the year,
and you know the result will take care of itself.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
Interesting challenges ahead for Andrew Webster and is playing group mottery.
Really appreciate your time and you're analysis tonight. Thanks for
joining us.
Speaker 4 (10:34):
No, it's plenty good to chat.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Good to tat to you too, Tony there former Warriors
and Kiwi's utility, pretty astute eye on the game. You've
heard from him. Your chance now to well play selector.
But also to answer another question for me, Oh eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number two questions?
First one, how big a blow is this? I need
you to put this into context for me if you can.
(10:57):
How integral to the success of the Warriors this season,
had Luke Metcalfe been pretty integral? Pretty done? Integral to
my eyes? And ever present he's played every game a
blossoming halves combo being forged with Chanelle Harris Tavita running
(11:17):
the team around, scoring tries, scoring points. I know there's
been a bit of criticism about his goalkicking, but he
seems to be working on that. He's the man who's
been handed the keys right in that seven jersey by
Andrew Webster. He's put him in there and he's stuck
with him. Andrew Webster had some choices at the start
of the season to replace Sean Johnson, and a lot
(11:40):
of people I think thought to mighty Martin might get
a crack, well first crack anyway, given the fact that
he's played there regularly for the Warriors. But no, it
was Luke Metcalf and I think hindsight has proven that
to be absolutely the right decision. So now that it
looks as though he won't be there, question two is
this who comes in? Two genuine options. I think the
(12:06):
third is will get to Tanner Boyd and Tomightty Martin
in a moment. The third is is Jack Clary. He's
in the Warriors Age group program, son of Ivan, younger
brother of Nathan. Don't know a heck of a lot
about him other than his genes which are clearly pretty good,
and I think, you know, bringing him in would be
(12:28):
a big, big call. But maybe he might get some
more time training with the first grade squad. But it
seems to me it's either Tanner Boyd or Tomarty Martin.
That's the obvious choice for Andrew Webster now to make
Tanner Boyd signed on a two year contract to the
end of next season. Sixty nine NRL games with the Titans.
(12:53):
A former Queensland under twenty rep, predominantly used as a
half back by the Titans, so a genuine number seven.
He's been carving it up in the New South Wales Cup.
The Warrior is a top of that competition with fifteen
wins from sixteen games and he's been a huge part
of that. He's got admiration from across the Tasman Earlier
(13:16):
this season the Daily Telegraph over there will linking him
with a move to the Cowboys next year to replace
Rhyese Robson who's off to the Roosters. And even though
he's got one year left on his deal, the way
the NROL works, and I'm sure you know this is
that in November of your final year or going into
your final year, other teams can talk to you. But
(13:37):
even though he was being linked with the Cowboys for
next year, he decided he would stay. Has made it
clear he wants to stay with the Warriors for next
season for the second year of his contract. He's keen
to stay to Mighty Martin. Eight games this season all
off the interchange took him awhile to even get a
game five or six games without seeing Tomighty Martin, then
(14:00):
he was included. He's played the last seven in a
variety of roles and he's played just about his position.
Third season at the Warriors, he had time of the Panthers,
the Cowboys, the Broncos, member the bleed on his brain.
This was quite the story. Forced out of the game
in twenty nineteen, came back for the Broncos, then sim
of the Warriors in twenty twenty three on a three
(14:21):
year deal. So this is the last year of a
three year deal. Brought up one hundred games last weekend,
one hundred NRL games in the Penrith match at go Media.
Sixteen games last season, eight at half back, eight at
five eighth, and that's I think why a lot of
people thought that he might be your man to start
at half back this season, but now it was Metcalf
(14:42):
and so now I guess he's got at least a
case to mount that he should be given the seven jumper.
He's had to be patient. Played nine games in twenty
twenty three, only one of those at half back and
eight at five eighth. So which way are you going?
Which way? Do you think Andrew Webster will go? And
how big a loss is Luke Metcalf to this team. Oh,
(15:06):
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number, Kevin, Hollo.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
Mate, I could have been all.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Very good, Kevin, thank you goody.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
Of course, of course I'm still a bit down up
to my my my actual team loss on the last
Thursday night, So that's okay. But as an outsider fan
and as a Warrior's outside or probably singing five works
next man up and list management because I think it's
(15:36):
my mindset. It's a bit of a very aflish mindset,
next player up and list management because of course could
a blow for the Warrior, isn't it? You know what
I mean?
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yes? Yeah, And they've had to do they've had to
be a next man up proposition this year, Kevin. As
you'll know, they've had guys out the likes of Roger
Tui Vasichek. We didn't see Delan hy Tenney's least neck
for a long time, James Fisher Harris was out for
a while, so they have had a next man up mentality.
I just feel as though this list, though, is starting
(16:06):
to get a little bit long. In some pretty key
positions in the spine of the team.
Speaker 5 (16:11):
But also kinds of kind of I'm thinking this though,
I think I'm playing with SIPs David tact super coach
cap On. It's like kind of now the problem lies
what sort of lies with the list manager now you
know what I mean, who's so who's the and then
they're going to have to start looking at the the
Jersey flag the New South walest Cup side. So it
(16:33):
says who can step in, who's willing to take this
opportunity that has been created? You know, do you come
kind of where I'm coming from?
Speaker 2 (16:42):
I do. I know exactly where you're coming from. And
I think that's why Tanner Boyd appeals. That's why Tanner
Boyd appeals. As exactly what you said there, Kevin. He's
been playing New South Wales Cup. They've been absolutely carving up.
I'm sure you've taken notice of that. They're top by
about five points the Warriors in the New South Wales Cup.
He's played every game, Tanner Boyd apart from one. He
(17:03):
hasn't lost one yet, So you kind of feel like,
you know, if he's been brought to the Warriors as
a halfback and your first choice halfback is out, then
Tanner Boy's got to be given a crack, doesn't he all?
Speaker 5 (17:16):
What about this certain brother of a four time premiership
plan who was signed up in the off season. What
about him?
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Jack Clary, he's also there. I think with Jeck Clary
he's probably one man back. And you talk about list management,
I think he's down the list a bit. You want
to be deep in all positions, and I think the
Warriors are deep in the halves. But I think it
would be a very big call to get Jack Clary
in there. Yes, he's got, you know, great genes. Clearly
his dad was a great player and is a superb coach.
(17:46):
His brother absolutely superb player. And who knows what Jeck
Clary might be able to do. And they'll know internally,
they'll know, they'll be keeping eyes on him. Be a
big call to bring him in, but who knows. You
might get opportunities later. Good on you, Kevin, Good to
chet to your.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
Mate, Hello, Leroy, you mean bunny? How are you doing?
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Very good?
Speaker 6 (18:03):
Leroy?
Speaker 2 (18:04):
How's your Monday been?
Speaker 6 (18:06):
Awesome? Things for?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (18:09):
Yeah, I think Tanner Boyd has to come in. I
think Lee to Money Martin on number fourteen yeah, you know,
it says kicking goal kicking. I think there's the opportunity
now that he needs to take and grab it by
their horns. Now with Tennel Boyd, he's been well and
(18:29):
in the second grade team he's a weals team soon
in the Cup.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
He's had lots of regular league there hasn't here he's
been He's played a lot of minutes. I mean he
plays pretty much eighty minutes every week he plays. From
what I can see. Interesting also Leroy than In that
in that New South Wales Cup team when Tomighty Martin
hasn't been used in the first grade team, so when
both Boyd and Martin have been playing New South Wales
Cup that it has been Tanner Boyd who plays half back.
So yeah, like I say, if that's the way the
(18:57):
club you know, feels about these players and they feel
as though, Okay, Tanner Boyd's our New South Wales Cup
half back. When your first grade half back goes down,
it's a logical thing to do, wasn't it.
Speaker 6 (19:09):
Yeah he steps up? Hey, you know. Also for chance
I think te Tein theopothy, I think that he should
be a fullback leave on the wing. I think Adam
Pompey should go on the wing take Idi Cosia because
he didn't play too well on Sydney put Keate Well
(19:29):
into the cinders with Rocko Berry.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah yeah, that's yeah, that's that's I mean, you've you've
landed on the other injury problem. We don't know. I
guess we all have just assumed that that that looks
injury was worse and he's had an a c L
before and it just without being able to read his mind,
it just looked by the look on his face and
how how devastated he looked that he knew that it
was a bad injury. That when when that, when that
(19:55):
bloke landed on Chance when he scored that try man,
I was wincing watching that. That just looked like an awful,
awful coming together, didn't it. I mean, we don't know.
We haven't had scans report on either, so you're right,
Chance well certainly is Andrew Ribster say he won't be
playing in a couple of weeks against the Tigers, So yeah,
I don't. I think there'd be a temptation probably among
fans more than anything to think back to, you know.
(20:17):
Twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen, Roger two Vasishick and get him
at four back. I like him on the wing. I'd
have tained two Opi at fullback as well. That's what
I would be doing. Presumably he's recovered from that that
high shot he got a couple of weeks ago playing
New South Wellest Cup. Yeah that was terrible stuff. But yeah,
I'd be the same, I think, Leroy, I think i'd be.
I'd be giving taine to ol Piki the fullback slot,
(20:39):
keeping Roger on the wing and saying to Tanner Boyd,
right mate, your next man up. You're wearing the seven.
Speaker 6 (20:46):
I can't wish for plenty. You have a good maker.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
You a good night to Leroy. Even even talking to
you about it, I'm quite excited to see what they do. Yes,
it's a blow, of course it's a blow, but a
chance to see Tanner Boyd. He came over here. You
know he's he's clearly got a bit about him. And
this is why you have depth in sports teams, isn't it.
(21:11):
This is why teams always talk about having a next
man up mentality. Why Scott robertson yesterday when he was
in the studio, different sport, I know, but I'm sure
the same applies. Talked about being four deep in every position.
We want to be four deep, he said, in every position.
And if you look at the halves for the Warriors,
and yes they're not exactly the same, but there are
a lot of blokes who can play both. Do you
(21:34):
look at are they four deep? Well? Luke Metcalf and
Chanelle Harris Tavita have clearly been the first choice. They've
played every single game. Then you've got to Mighty Martin
and Tanner Boyd, and then you come down to the
likes of Jet Clary. So yeah, four potentially even five deep.
Begin to know how Jet Clary's going, actually Presumi's playing
and you know, down the grades every week and developing
(21:57):
his craft. What a weight though, imagine if your surname
was Cleary Rugby League. Goodness me, what a what a
perhaps it could be? Or conversely, what a motivation to
live up to the deeds of your older brother and
your old man. I eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
(22:17):
talking Warriors for a bit longer, Bob McMurray going to
unpack Liam Lawson's best ever Formula one finished for us
in a little while. But if you want to talk
some Warriors I eight hundred eighty ten eighty nine two
ninety two on text back after this on News Talks,
heb it is seven twenty nine.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
You no need for the TMO. We've got the breakdown
on Sports Talk call oh eight hundred eighty eight News Talks, B.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
News Talks and Sports Talk. It's seven point thirty one.
Bob McMurray with us very shortly to talk about Liam Lawson.
Just want to continue a bit on the Warriors though
a couple of texts here to get through. One much
actually caught my eye, which was interesting. The Warriors will
now finish ninth. It says, look, they're fourth at the moment,
and they front loaded their season, haven't they, with wins
(23:05):
nine games to go, and they've got to buy, so
they'll pick up two points for the buy this coming weekend.
That'll take them to twenty six points. So at the
very worst, at the very worst, they'll still be four
points clear of the chasing pack. And that chasing pack
at the moment consists of the Broncos, the Roosters and
(23:25):
the resurgent Panthers, followed by Dolphin, Sea Eagle, Sharks, Dragons.
It's always tight isn't it. But with the two points
for the buy, they'll then go into their final nine
game stretch with a four point buffer. The next three
games very winnable and as I said to Matsu, tony
teams that are in the lower echelons of the table
(23:46):
at the moment. Next up the Tigers at home the
Tiger's currently fourteenth of seventeen teams, then away at the
Night they're thirteenth, and then at home to the Titans
who are rock bottom. So three on the face of
it anyway, and the way the Warriors have been playing
three very winnable games, very winnable games. Then it's at
(24:08):
home to the Dolphins, away to the Bulldogs who are
currently second. The Dolphins, as mentioned before, are eighth but
starting to get a bit of wind in their sales.
I think they've got fifty points in three of their
last four games. Then it's at home to the Dragons eleventh,
away at the Titans again. So that bottom side is
(24:29):
one that the Warriors have to play twice in the
last nine games, at home to the Eels who are fifteenth,
and then away to the Sea Eagles who are ninth.
So if you look at it in terms of table
position as we stand at the moment, they're all teams below.
And then you think to yourself, okay, well, let's say
the Warriors due. I think we've all this year thought, hey,
(24:51):
this is a top four team. It's a top four team.
And then you look at the other teams in the
top four and then you think to yourself, okay, well
are they in? Are they in there on their merits?
And they've you know, you look at the Raiders, the Bulldogs,
the Storm, and you think, and those teams just feel
as though they're in a different kind of a conversation.
(25:12):
Much as the Warriors have been playing well, I think
they just need everything to go their way if they
are to be real top four contenders. Look, I think
potentially now they could be swallowed up by the chasing pack.
The Panthers are on a bit of a bit of
a tear. They've won their last four in a row.
(25:33):
The Broncos I think they've won three of their last four.
That the pack are starting to close in. I wonder now,
if we're going to be a bit more pessimistic, whether
we might think, okay, let's let's look for a top
six finish which gets you that home final and see
how we go from there. It's an interesting time. Next
man up. Mentality has to be the way keep the
(25:55):
faith up the war, says Peter. Good on your Peter,
and Steve says got to be Tanner Boyd coming in.
I tend to agree. I think Tanner Boyd is the one.
I think you keep to Mighty Martin as the look
in the fourteen jumper, providing you cover in a number
of positions and you put Tanner Boyd in there a
half back to play half back. We'll have to wait
for a bit to see what Andrew Webster does to
(26:17):
buy this weekend. Next time he names the teams next Tuesday,
let's see who he names in the seven jumper. Twenty
five to eight a career best Formula One finish for
Liam Lawson at the Austrian Grand Prix this morning.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Liam Lawson managed to get sick as well as he
crossed the line.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Great day for Liam Lawson in sec Yeah, he's crossed
in sixth place to earn eight points for himself and
for racing balls. His teammate Isaac Hadjar twelfth. In fact,
Liam Lawson the best of all four cars from the
Red Bull stable max for Stappin was clipped at the start,
marking the first time he's failed to finish this season.
Yuki Sonoda came home sixteenth. Let's bring in motorsport expert
(26:55):
Bob McMurray, Bob Grater chatty on Sports Talk. How significant
a day was this for Liam?
Speaker 7 (27:01):
Yeah, Hi Peney. Well, let's not look at the day.
Let's look at the weekend for Liam. He he's been
in a constant battle with his teammate, and his teammate,
Isaac Hadja has eclipsed him quite a lot. But this weekend,
if you look at the free practice one, okay, Haji
was ahead of him, then free practice two, free practice three,
(27:23):
qualifying one, two and three, Liam was ahead of Haji
the whole way. In fact, even in the race, he
got a faster lap than Hajar. So Liam has had
a very good weekend generally. He he sort of said
at the beginning of the weekend, the car is more
comfortable for him. They've done a lot of work and
it's paid off. It looks comfortable for him. Now you've
(27:44):
got to admit that he was nearly knocked out on
the first corner. Well could turn three on the first
lap with the accident with Verstapan and Antonelli, but then
onwards he just stuck to his guns. He only did
one pit stop, so it was a remarkable race to
keep on just two sets of tires the whole way round,
whereas everybody else bar one Alonso was on two stops
(28:08):
and Alonso had to follow him virtually for seventy one laps.
And you know, to keep a world champion behind you.
A remarkable weekend for him, and I think he can
be well pleased with himself.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
I want to drill down into a couple of points
you've made there. First of all, you know, you often
when we have you on the show talk about about
Liam and his comparison with Isaac Haadjar in terms of
finishing ahead of him, out performing him. That's clearly quite important, Bob,
to outperform your teammate.
Speaker 7 (28:38):
It's extremely important and extremely important for Liam as well.
I think he denies it all the time, but I
think from Liam's point of view, the psychological effect of
getting employed by the top team as Max staff and
teammate and then dumped after just two races, I think
(28:58):
that has lived with him for some time, and then
coming into the Red the Racing Bulls team with a rookie,
a very promising rookie who's all, you know, spit and bluster,
all sorts of things straight away, and he's out there
beating lim. I think that kind of affected his psyching
a little bit more, and I think he's taken a
(29:19):
while to get out of it. And I think in
the last one or two races, especially, or one or
two weekends, he's kind of got a different aspect to
me looking at him. He's got a different aspect about
his personality, about the way he's doing business in the
racing car, and I think we've seen this weekend the
result of that. Now, this may be race specific. It
(29:40):
may be because he's well used to the austereized ring
us as he used to be the Austrian Grand Prix track.
It may be that he's well used to that track
in that car and it suited him. He has had
his best weekend this year, coincidentally with Hajar's worst weekend
of this year. So you know, Swallows and Summers. We've
(30:03):
got to give it a one or two races to
see if he he's on track. But I think he
is back on track. I really do right, because you
can't do seventy odd laps around that place, seventy one
laps whatever it was with a world champion as close
to you behind you as you can possibly be and
beat him and be in front of fourteen other drivers.
(30:26):
You know you can't do that without some skill and
belief in your own ability, and that's what he's got.
I think this.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Weekend absolutely well. Let's go to two and three. On
lap one, Keim he Antonelli crashing into Max for step
and ending both of the erasers. Now, Liam I think
was clipped as well, wasn't he? Can you talk us
through what you saw happen there?
Speaker 7 (30:44):
Yeah, well, Anthonelli, for those people who haven't seen it,
turn three is an uphill, literally a sharp right hand bend.
On the first lap, people are driving into the two
three four abreast. It's very easy to get clipped, and
everybody is generally a little bit careful in there just
to get around it. Once you do the first lap,
(31:05):
on you go. Unfortunately, Antonelli was approaching just a little
bit quickly and he had to use the brakes a
little bit hard. He saw that he wasn't going to
break in time to miss the car in front of him,
so he went further to the right hand side, therefore
cutting that corner off completely. He would had no hope
of turning right in that case. He hit the brakes hard,
(31:29):
skidded up on the curb and went straight ahead. I
think The first carr he hit basically was Liam, but
fairly lightly. But then he cannoned into Rastafan and took
the Staffan's front wheel off maybe and certainly his own
front wheel. So Liam was very fortunate to get away
with that, and he was in a good position at
that time, his sixth position still I think, and he
(31:52):
dropped to ninth after all that, so he had a
bit of a job to do. He had a bit
of work to do to get through the rest of
the race, and he did. He put his head down
and he drove brilliantly on an exceptionally hot day and
managing Tis at the same time. It is a strategy
that we have seen Red Bull pull over the past
(32:15):
few races, a sort of an off strategy to other people,
and it has failed in Liam's terms more than once.
Well this time it worked and everything worked for him.
So yeah, an excellent, an excellent performance on the day.
But you know, let's see if you can manage the
same sort of thing as Silverston coming up this coming weekend.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
Absolutely, it's the word as well, Bob, if I could
on Yuki Sonoda sixteenth, the last of the drivers who
actually completed the race. He's had a torrid time of
things since taking that seat in the second Red Bull.
What on earth is the Red Bull team strategy with
regards to Max and the second car?
Speaker 7 (32:52):
If your guess is as good as mine now, because
they dug themselves into a bit of a hole, haven't they.
They've got a car that is well, how much how
they couch it? It is the a car that is
I designed around Max. Wis happened and it was a
car that has proven to be difficult for Perez in
(33:13):
the first place, and they thought he's no good, we
need to change drivers. Perez was actually quite close to
Max on many occasions, but unfortunately they got rid of him.
Liam was straight in there, couldn't hope after two races
at all, couldn't even get near it. And then they thought, oh,
it's no problem, would get Sunoda in there because he's
he's clearly a lot better. Well, he's done worse. Frankly,
(33:36):
he's done worse. Just look at this last this race
this weekend. Liam was the last driver to be unlapped.
Everybody else was lapped, so Noda was down at the bottom.
Basically he finished two laps back. I mean, you know,
it's got to be something that they've got to sort
out with the car. I don't think they're going to
change drivers anytime this year. I think they'll keep the
(33:59):
same same driver. I hope they do, because I hope
they don't put Liam nor Haja back in that car.
That would be disaster for both of them. But it's
remarkable how they have centered their whole team around Max
Forstappen and this is what's coming to pay now. There
aren't any drivers that they'd want to put in that
card just now. The opposite when you look at the McLarens,
(34:20):
for instance, and you look at the superb job they've
done and letting the two guys race with disaster on
every corner potential, it's a different aspect completely. It's a
different way of running racing, it's a different way of
encouraging racing, and they let their guys race. More to
(34:41):
the point, nothing to do with Snoda and Verstappen because
Sonoda wouldn't get close enough for Stapan to race. But
it's good that McLaren are able to design a calf
of both people, as do most of the teams. In fact,
going off subject a little bit, the two McLaren drivers
and the way they're going racing with McLaren at the
moment makes me smile because it reminds me of my
(35:03):
days there with Seth and Frost who were allowed to
raise each other and that had some remarkable outcomes as well.
So back to Red Bull, I think they've got themselves
into a deep hole because who can go in that
seat now? They haven't got anybody else that is going
to just slip into it until they've changed the design
of the car.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
Such interesting times, good weekend though for Liam Lawson. Always
enjoy and appreciate your expertise. Bob, thanks so much for
joining us.
Speaker 7 (35:30):
Cheers, Brainy, my pleasure.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
No good on you, mate, that's Bob McMurray. You always
learned so much listening to Bob, don't you.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (35:36):
What are Red Bull going to do? It just seems
just so bizarre and by the sounds of it. Max
Fistep and maybe off to Mercedes anyway, So then what
what are they going to completely redesign their car? And
then who's going to drive them? Had youa laws and Sonoda,
somebody else? God, I don't know a heck of a
(35:56):
lot about this, but it just seems to me as
though at the start of the year they were talking
it up saying, yet we want to we want to
be in the Constructors Championship conversation, No chance, they're miles
behind McLaren now, can't possibly do it to win that,
You've got to have both cars picking up points, ain't
doing it. Next up is the Great British Grand Prix
(36:17):
at Silverstone. That's next weekend, so Liam Lawson gets to
immediately try and capitalize on the momentum he gained in
Austria over this weekend. Then there's a couple of weeks
break before Belgium and Hungary, then the Netherlands, Italy and Azerbaijan.
Those are the next five Grand Prix and Liam Lawson,
I'm sure will take great confidence from what happened in Austria.
(36:37):
Let's hope so anyway, and springboard his way forward and
continue to do well and continue to outperform Isaac Hadjam
as well. Seven forty five. Let's take a break. When
we come back, it's time to rate the weekend Piney's
Power rankings. After this our rankings, let's go Monday Night
(37:00):
means Piney's Power Rankings, rating the best, the worst and
the end between. It's from the Sporting Weekend. The Warriors
a miserable afternoon in more ways than one. In Brisbane
Warriors for the first time this year loves back to
back games.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
And it comes at a cass Injuries to medcalf and
little Clipstaffe.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Injuries to key players and back to back losses to
buy has come at a very good time. Nine Kai
Cut of France outclassed at UFC three one seven in
Nevada of Franz deespimately trying to stay in the foot us.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
Those still make it.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Talk of the sails, but the other worldly Fireward sat
on the suns. Pantosia. Yeah, Kai Cut of France losing
his flyweight title bound to Brazilian champion Alexandre the Cannibal Pantoja.
No disgrace there. He put up a very noble fight
against a very tough opponents. Set the British and Irish lines,
(38:02):
Macreton comes off for him. Where is the final score?
Getting their Australian tour off on a winning note, comfortably
accounting for the Western Force. Seven is the mold of
all Blacks. I walk to Leo with arrival numbers, plenty
(38:22):
of space away to the left point here, trust trusks
and the body. All Blacks crack the half century in Tokyo,
surging over the top of the Japan fifteen and the
second half scoring six tries to win. Fifty three twenty
six six is said by talkback caller Mark, who rung
(38:43):
Razor yesterday when he was in studio with us looking
for a job.
Speaker 7 (38:47):
Good squad, you've got, but one thing.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
I didn't see my name in it for the water boys,
you know, I'd do wottles Boside, not for the All Blacks.
Speaker 7 (38:55):
When am I going I get the call up?
Speaker 2 (38:57):
We've got a vetting process that we're to go through.
We're currently doing it at the moment, So we'll come
back to your things. Man, can't you keep your head
and the ring there? Mark keep? They'll get a local
level and who knows you might get the call We've
got your number.
Speaker 1 (39:09):
Five.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Five is our New Zealand under nineteen men's basketball team.
Then Lacy is chucked.
Speaker 5 (39:16):
This is New Zealand open.
Speaker 4 (39:18):
The Fever under.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
Nineteen World Cup a win, yeah, going back to back
in fact of the Fever under nineteen World Cup wins
now over Argentina and also Marley sure Key We Rower,
Logan ol Rick in Lucerne. It's now much. That's all.
(39:46):
A maiden World Cup title. In the single skulls three
fifteen year old kee we skateboarder Jessica Reedy is at three, justicedy,
rising to the occasion on her final run, saving her
best for last, an eighty three point six six chump
(40:06):
up into that bronze. Milso remember the name. Jessica Redy
winning bronze in the street discipline at her debut X
Games in Salt Lake City, eighty three point sixty six
on her final run to lift her onto the podium.
Two Olympic Kayak Cross champion Finn Butcher ending his long
wait for a World Cup title. Fenn Butcher, that is
(40:28):
his Olympic winning form. There he will take the gold.
Speaker 8 (40:32):
Look at Fenn Butcher throws the paddle away, just absolutely
hurls the paddle away in celebration.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
Thirteen years after his international debut, finally winning gold in Prague.
But the eight number one that can only be Liam Lawson.
The best finish of his Formula One career, Liam.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
Lawson managed to get sick as well as he crossed
the line.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Great Daypan Liam Lawson in sect, a career best for
Liam Lawson and the best red ball at their home
Grand Prix. Did you think that Mark asking to be
all blacks water Boy might be a bit higher?
Speaker 8 (41:11):
Well, I actually think Mark came in himself a bit
low when asking for that job. See what I would
have done if far was that as I would have
come in and asked if I could be starting fullback
and then negotiate your way back down to water Boy.
It sounds a bit better that way, but it's just
too easy for Scott to say to say no to
him from water Boy and then there's no job further
(41:32):
back than that, you see, So start with yeah, start
with you can I be starting for a week? Not okay,
I'll take take a bench roll, then no ventro okay
wide a training squad, but bridge too far? Water Boys
suddenly sounds pretty tempting, doesn't it doesn't it?
Speaker 2 (41:47):
For the moon shoot for the moon. You might land
among the stars. Isn't that what they say? I think so.
I think so. It wouldn't landing among the stars be
better than the moon? Well, I was saying, and I
was thinking exactly that. Maybe the analogy was shoot for
the star, you might land on the moon. I'm pretty
(42:08):
sure that's not us. The Moon's not a good place
to land and there's no atmosphere there. Okay, we've picked apart.
This's analogy. Enough pining. That's all. Findy's Power rankings for
return next Monday night, coming up three to eight. Mark says,
keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for
the stars. As Casey Casem used to say, the great
(42:31):
Casey Caseam the American top forty well before your time, Andy,
you won't remember or be familiar with Casey Casem. I
am that's us tonight Marcus Lush on the radio, Who
will remember Casey Casem? We're back on weekend Sport. There's
coming Saturday live from Emerson's into need and ahead of
the first All Blacks test of the year. I can't wait.
(42:52):
Thanks to any McDonald for producing. Have an excellent night.
