We're here talking sport until eight. The All Blacks have
become the first side in rugby history to reach five
hundred Test wins.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
And a so called second strength freak side has delivered
a first rate performance, but the All Blacks hang on
to win Test number one of twenty twenty five thirty one,
twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
It certainly will not go down as one of their
more convincing victories, but it means they start twenty twenty
five with a win and with plenty to work on.
I really can fee have us tonight on where you'd

The right call is your call on oh eight hundred
and eighty eighties sports talk call on your home of
Sports News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
One of those to catch the eye and a black
jersey on Saturday night was half back Camroy Guard.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
And it will be a penalty for the all blacks
in midfield twenty two and ten. Cody Taylor's pointing at
the sticks, but he's been ignored. Cam Roy Gut slices
up the midlow pick still going Roy Guard head supported
as their pen site pack quite release it, but he's
two away. Wonderful run from roygup.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
Here one of those trademark runs from Cam Roy Guard.
He also, of course made the run which set up
Jordy Barrett for what looked to be the All Blacks
first try before being chalked off by the TMO for
a Fletcher Nule knock on. I had the chance to
chat with Chamroy camroy Guard this afternoon. His name's came
Roy Guard. I spoke to him this afternoon and asked
first up for his overall reflections on the first test
(03:12):
and need and on Saturday. Yeah, good, I guess we did?
Speaker 1 (03:17):
You know?
Speaker 4 (03:17):
I guess the challenge with playing your first tests of
the years. You know that, I guess collectively, how are
you going to click together? With not much time to prepare?
And then obviously the unsettity of what the French are
going to throw a us as they'll have you know,
special plays and special moves and all that sort of stuff.
So Yeah, it's been good to get there one under
the bout and get the result. I feel like we've
(03:39):
got our big rocks right and obviously plenty of things
to work on still, which I think is obviously always
going to be a given at this stage of where
we're at in the season for us. But yeah, overall,
pretty pretty heavy.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Did the French surprise you in any way or did
they come with what you expected they would come with? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:58):
I think no, I don't think there was too many
surprises in terms of what they're going to turn up. Like,
you know, they play with lots of passion, lots lots
of pride, and then there are team that's then going
to go away, and I guess unfortunately for us, we
sort of played them to their hands a little bit
with you know, giving them a lot of turnover ball
and sort of letting them off the hook when we
felt like they were about to crack, which is exactly
(04:21):
how they enjoy playing. And you know, the last time
we played them and it was the exact same thing happened.
So you know, we know that if we can sort
of keep creating opportunities like we were on the weekend,
but be able to finish them a bit more ruthless
in that space, then you will be being a good spot.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Can you just come talk us through the kick strategy,
particularly box kicking, and what it is that your part
in that is looking to achieve, and then what you
need from others as part of the aerial game.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
I know a lot of people don't like it when
they think that we're just kicking them all away, but
it's all around, you know, for us pressure cycles and
how we can put pressure back on them, whether it's
through gaining territory because if they do get the ball back,
we're defending on the halfway or in their half, which
I guess takes the pressure of us a little bit,
or if we do get it back, you know, that
(05:09):
immediately puts the pressure straight back on them as they're
into our counter attack opportunities. So yeah, I guess it's
a little bit of an element of trying to control
the game, and it probably can get a bit stale
for people watching at home that don't quite understand it
or don't know why we're doing it. But you can
see in both sides that there's a lot of kicking
on the weekend because we are trying to control that
(05:30):
either the territory or you know, put the forced mistakes
through through our kicking game. And you know it's gonna
be a big challenge this weekend. Obviously not under a roof,
so the kicks aren't going to be perfect. It's going
to be swirling all over the place if it's anything
like it has been this year. So it's going to
be an exciting challenge. And yeah, I think it's gonna
be a big part to win in the game on
the weekend.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
So when you were lining up a box kick, but
I was presumably you're going for elevation more than distance,
so that you give you all guys the chance to
get under it. Is it a It's quite a science.
It's something I've seen you work on at Captain Drums.
Do you work closely on.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
That, Yeah, definitely. It's probably a skill set that's probably
a little bit underrated in my opinion. You know, people
probably don't know how hard it is. And with the
rules around the time of the ruck and you're not
allot anyone to stand in front of you for protection,
so there's a lot more pressure on the boxkicker now
and because they obviously trying to be the game up,
(06:24):
which is all good. So yeah, there's definitely quite a
big skill set involved with the executing a good box skick.
And the difference between a good box sick and a
bad box kick can either be the location or where
it lands. And if that's the length, if it's thirty meters,
it's too long, and if it's you know, twenty meters
in or you know, eighteen meters and it's too short.
So yeah, it's definitely something that we work as nine
(06:46):
is pretty hard at because so we can because it
is a big part of our game, and if we
can nail it, then yeah, we're doing the right things
to sort of getting in control of the game.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Let's move to something that people do start cheering about,
and that's you're sniping going from the base of the ruck.
And you went in this first half on the weekend
and set Jordy up for a try that was eventually
ruled out. But in those moments when you are decision
making and split seconds, what are the pictures you're seeing?
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, I guess around a few things around body language
from the opposition. You know that we're that the French
team is a team that's probably set peace dominant, and
if we can go deep in the phase count well
sort of fatigue them, then I guess those opportunities can
open up. And yeah, like you say, or sort of
a little bit unfortunate with the that try getting overalled,
But I think the way that we're trying to play
(07:31):
sort of suits the way I want to play, because
if we get quick rucks where the defense isn't set,
then there's opportunities to sort of poke out and have
a look. And if it means that it's a mismatch
on a prop or you know, someone that's not quite ready,
then yeah, that suits me perfectly.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
And similar situation was the tap penalty that you took
in the second half. I think I saw Cody Tayler thing,
I'm going to take a shot at goal, but then
off your went and almost got there. So in those moments,
you feel you've got the responsibility, you're able to make
those decisions. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
I think collectively we sort of felt that they were
in a position they're a little bit vulnerable, and I
guess that fatigua was setting in and they were about
to crack, and it was I I was thinking it,
and then I was sort of looking across and then
Scooter was sort of telling me to go, so I
was like, oh, well, I'm not gonna ask twice. So
and then as it sort of worked out, probably yeah,
I didn't really have a plan as to what I
(08:21):
was going to do, but it obviously yeah, worked out
up until we got turned over. But I guess, yeah,
having the confidence collectively to we have our you know, systems,
instructions and stuff, but being able to play what's in
front of us and if we get an opportunity to
be able to take there is, yes, what we're about as.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Well, your eleventh test, but you're first at home. All
your ten previous tests have been off. Sure, So how
different was the week and how special was the week?
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Yeah? I loved it. It was Yeah, probably a long
time coming in terms of playing in front of you know,
while playing in New Zealand, in front of our fans
and friends and family and whatnot. So it was cool
to finally get that one, I guess out of the way.
But yeah, I enjoyed the enjoyed the build up. Our
fans are great, you know, they're so passionate and it's
(09:06):
so loud, and although you know they travel really well
as well, you know, like at the World Cup, obviously
we have plenty of New Zealand support, but yeah, it's
just different at home, you know, playing in a stadium
with unfamiliar playing with you know, with faces that I
see in the crowd that you know have been supporting me,
you know since day one, and stuff like that's pretty cool.
So yeah, really looking forward to this weekend as well
(09:29):
for an opportunity obviously playing in Wellington, which would be cool.
You never played here in the All Black jerseys, so yeah, yeah,
just so excited to hopefully get another opportunity this weekend
and year rips in our country.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
And four debutantes on the on the weekend just gone,
including one of your Hurricanes teammates into play, clearly something
that he's worked hard for and absolutely deserves. What was
it like, you know, having you know, having gups on
the on the field as an All Black alongside.
Speaker 4 (09:57):
Yeah, it's exceertamely special for him and his family. I
think a lot of people are sort of starting to
see how much it means to him and his family.
And I think think, you know, I've known him since
I've come since I first came to the Hurricanes in
twenty twenty one, and I know how hard he works
and how passionate he is about playing for you know,
obviously there was the Hurricanes, but you know, playing in
(10:19):
New Zealand probably I'm sure there would have been times
where he was, you know, thinking it wasn't going to happen.
But you know, credit to him, the resilience he showed
to be able to get better you know, on the
field obviously as a player and as a leader, especially
through the Hurricanes, he's started to make some you know,
really mature decisions with you know, his actions on the field.
(10:42):
And yeah, everything that sort of comes way over the
past couple of weeks has been through you know, nothing
but hard work and I guess determination to sort of
make this dreamer has come true. So yeah, really stick.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
From and of course some the eight nine combo is
quite important too. And Christian Leo Willie, a guy who
you probably I don't know, haven't played a lot with.
How did you go about forging that partnership during the week.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yeah, it was great. It was just about I guess
connecting around few wad if scenarios. So he's not getting flustered,
he's yeah, I don't know if we had played together before,
but you know, I've played obviously against them, and you know,
he's a pretty smooth operator and seems to be pretty
composed a lot of the time, and you know, obviously
having already beside and would have been pretty good for
(11:23):
his confidence. And yeah, I was just making sure that
I was always just connecting with him through the week
around some stuff that we would get through normally, and
just try to treat it as normal of the week
as possible. So you know, it's pretty clear for him,
so you could just go out and do his job
on the weekend, which yeah, which him as he did
along with you know, the other debutants as well, So yeah,
(11:43):
pretty stoked for all four of them.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
It's cooler just to finish. Obviously, last year had the
injury which kept out of the All Black Store the
end of the year tour. In your first year, hasn't
all let you came in and waited a couple of
tests for your debut he first test of the year.
You're the starting nine looking into a World Cup cycle.
Do you feel in a good place rugby wise, and
you're excited about what the next three years might hold.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Yeah, Yeah, it's definitely exciting. It's you never take a
position I'm in for granted, and being able to play
the first test as pretty special and yeah hopefully, Well
definitely I'm in a position where I can get a
lot better and being in this environment definitely enables me,
alongside everyone else here to be able to do that.
And yeah, whatever my position or my role on the
(12:26):
team is, I know that I'm going to be able
to get better each week. With the coaching group and
the players that we have, it's an inevitable So yeah,
hugely exciting for the future for me. But yeah, just
focusing on week to week because that's when you get
the best out of me.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
So good man, thanks for the chat, easy, thank you.
That is Cam Rouygat how I spoke with this afternoon.
The All Blacks have arrived in Wellington and settled in
at the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport in
Upper Hut, where they'll be until Thursday. Then they'll move
into the city and into their hotel ahead of Saturday's match.
Great to have a great chin wag with Cam roy Guard.
(13:01):
He always gives you something. He is a very very
intelligent girl and obviously thinks a lot about the game.
So good to get his thoughts on a couple of things.
Time for a chin wag with you now, though, let's
talking about a rugby shall we?
Speaker 4 (13:16):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Eight hundred eighty ten eighty Just before we do text here,
what about Shane van Gisbergen beating them up in their
own bag yard? Yep, don't worry, got him do it
in Piney's power rankings. But later on we've got the
gizz How high though? How high? Anyway? On one hundred
eighty ten eighty we've been able to give Saturday Night
the forty eight hour test or thereabouts, very nearly and
(13:39):
we can look back and look forward. So two questions
for you really, One where are the biggest improvements needed?
And there's a bit of a list, and I'll get
your priorities in a moment. And two what might they
do with the starting side on Saturday Night and the
match day twenty three? Now? One change definitely needed with
(14:01):
sever Reese outs on HIA protocols. Just what a shame
for him fifty seconds into the game making his first tackle,
just getting his head in the wrong place and being
being not knocked out but certainly the recipient of a
pretty heavy knock so severe off and we'll observe those
(14:22):
stand down protocols. So we're going to need a new
right winger. And there's also doubts over Scott Barrett, who
left the field before the hour mark on Saturday night
with and Achilles problem. He was asked about that today,
Scott Robertson. Here's what he said. It's quite brief in
regard to that.
Speaker 6 (14:40):
Will be released tomorrow. So we've had the scans, so yep,
we'll find out a media release.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Okay, So they've had the scans and there's a media
release tomorrow. Now that feels to me. I don't know
for sure, but that feels to me like he's out.
If there's a media release coming, then normally that is
to announce something. Now I'm not sure you'd need one
if he's going to be okay, it's just business as usual.
So let's just safe for argument sake that Scott Barrett
is out. So what are you doing at Lock? Do
(15:09):
you bring tupor Vae back into the second row? He
started at six of course on Saturday night and he
was probably the standout Lock last year, So do you
bring him back into the second row or do you
leave him at six and bring Patrick tuy Pilotsu into
the second row. You know, a pretty handy guy to
(15:31):
have coming into the starting side. That's what i'd be
doing because I'd like to see a bit more of
Tupulva at six, just to get a larger sample size.
I think he was robust on Saturday night. I think
he did a lot of things well. I think it
was excellent in the lineout. But that's his bread and
butter anyway, isn't it. Having three locks in the line
(15:52):
out was pretty handy and New Zealand didn't lose one.
They won twenty out of twenty lineouts. But I'd like
to see a bit more of tupor V at six.
And Fabian Holland's debut was a press of enough I
think for him to earn another start. And if you do,
bring two porvity into Locke who plays at six some
(16:17):
a penny fee now, Luke Jacobson, I'd be keeping Vay
there and on the wing. Option one is to do
what they did on Saturday well before they thought they
would have to, and that was put Will Jordan on
the wing and bring Damien McKenzie off the bench and
put him at fullback. Or you could start Jordan at fullback,
(16:38):
as was the desire on Saturday, and bring someone else
onto the right wing. Now, Caleb Clark's in the squad,
but he has always been a left edger. He's always
worn the eleven jersey. I don't think I've ever seen
Caleb Clark in the fourteen jersey. So the candidates really
are Emoni Nadawah and Ruben Love. Ruben Love was in
(16:59):
the original squad and Imoni Nadada wasn't. He was there
as injury coven and not that that necessarily matters, because
Christian Leo Willie was initially named his injury cover and
he started on Saturday night. So I mean, I'd like
to see Love get a go, but I just don't
think he is really a winger. He can play on
(17:20):
the wing, but for the Hurricanes he has never played there.
He's a full back slash first five, So I kind
of think you go with a specialist winger, which Emoni
Narawah is. I'd put him there for what would be
just a third test, only a second start. Those are
(17:42):
the changes they'll have to make. That's provided, of course,
that Scott Barrett is out. So I change on the
wing and a change at Locke. What about the ones
they choose to make. I'm not sure you'd changed too much,
would you. I'd keep the back line the same apart
from Nadawah. For Reese, I think they should keep it
(18:04):
as it is. You might consider it a week in
the front row. Maybe. I'm not sure whether Tyrell Lomax
is fit or not. If he is, you probably starting
pussily a Tossi ol Noiris maybe promoted to start, and
you could potentially make a change. I guess in the
loose forwards, maybe Ardi goes to number eight, Christian Leo
Willi drops out khalif he starts on his home ground
(18:25):
at seven. I'm not sure. And I also think it
is time to give to Mothy Tavatavannaway a place in
the twenty three. I eight hundred eighty ten eighty for
your changes, And if you're Scott Robertson, what other big
Gnally things that you're addressing this week? The breakdown, yes, defense, yes,
(18:48):
the aerial battle absolutely. So give me your list of
priorities and maybe even put them in order. I eight
one hundred eighty ten eighty. Let's talk some rugby nine
two ninety two. They're stacking up on TeX's best way
to get your point across as on the phones. I
eight hundred eighty ten eighty heaven't forgotten about Scott Dixon,
havent forgotten about Shane van Gisbergen, giving them a lot
(19:11):
of coverage today on News Talks B across our sports news.
Absolutely brilliant. I've got them both in Piney's power rankings
that won't surprise you to know, but in which order
and whereabouts in the ten anyway, that's all to come
back with more and your calls on sports Talk in
a moment. I eight hundred eighty ten eighty seven twenty six.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
No need for the TMO. We've got the breakdown on
Sports Talk call oh eight hundred eighty eight News TALKSB.
Speaker 2 (19:41):
Seven twenty nine on sports Talk here on News Talks EDB.
I want to talk some rugby with You've got a
whole heap of texts which I can get through, but
keen to talk on the phones. I eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty some of the thoughts of Razor as
well on various issues to come. Just a couple of
these texts and there are a heapes of them, Russellso,
Jason speed up the goal kicking before we get timed out.
(20:03):
By the way, what a joke he says that the
clock starts as soon as the try is awarded. I
don't actually mind that. The intent, I don't mind. And yeah,
body got down to I think there was I think
one of his shots at goal he got sort of
down to two seconds. Remember last year Damien McKenzie got
timed out. Was that in Dunedin? I think it might
(20:24):
have been in Dunedin was certainly one of the first
two Tests against England he was timed out. Boden Barrick
just seems to he seemed completely unaffected by it all
and you could see the referee Nick Berry said to
make ten seconds. He just looks at him and nods
and then knocks it over. He was good from the
tea on Saturday night. Body, So, Russell, I don't mind
(20:45):
the I don't mind that the the clock starting when
the try has scored. You know, the guy with the
t's got to get out there. But that's normally these
days it's one of the one of the non playing members.
They're fit, they can get out there. I guess the
difficulty is if the try scored on the other side
of the field, they've got a high tail it all
the way over there. But yeah, I'm not I don't
(21:06):
have an issue with the shot clock. I mean when
there's any number of other ways to slow things down.
And actually France were doing that on Saturday night, weren't they.
After about twenty minutes their front rowers were down doing
up their boot lacers and you know, just sucking the
big ones, buying themselves a bit of extra time. Steve says,
(21:26):
boy did the French give the New Zealand rugby gurnos
and commentators that slag them off as a B team
the big f You well done, France. I'm not sure that.
I'm not sure there was slagging off, Steve. I know
what you're saying. I know there were words used like disrespectful.
I think Justin Marshall was kind of the one that
got talked about the most during the week. On the
Breakdown a week or so ago, he said that it
(21:49):
was disrespectful that France sent this team out. I think
we just have to accept and I think most of
us did that. France do have some good rugby depth.
They've got some decent players, and just like any Tier
one nation, when guys aren't there, it's next man up,
and some of their debutantes I think, show that they
(22:11):
could be around for a while even when the first
string has come back. Marsus Ponte actually enjoyed the game
and the game plan the All Blacks were playing. From
what I could gather, they attacked a lot more on
second phase play instead of kicking it all the time,
run those big boys around creating fatigue. Because I think
we have to have one eye on South Africa. As
(22:32):
you're right, they are clearly wanting to play at pace.
I think the All Blacks have worked out or their
coaching staff have that you cannot take South Africa on
at their own game. You cannot out physical South Africa.
It just won't work. Yes, you can match up with
(22:53):
them physically, but if you try to take them on
and win that way, it just ain't going to happen.
They just big, strong, physical guys. So if you get
yourself into an army soul, then at best it's fifty
to fifty. So playing at pace is the right way
(23:14):
to go about things and raise a seedge. You know, we, yes,
we want to play that way and we just have
to eliminate the errors that come from when you're playing
at pace. Here are raisers overall. Reflections on the weekend.
Speaker 6 (23:28):
Yeah, our focus is on improving what can we get
better at in the different areas and being honest in
our review. We did a lot of some great stuff
and stuff can get better at, so that's exciting. Probably
the review clips around the creation the bleeder to sustain
it and and finish. You know, these little kicks throughs,
(23:49):
you know with the backfield just holding into ball for
one will phase. Well, these lots actually that there's probably
well I can give you it was a good decision.
We're just honest with each other. It was the main thing.
Break twenty tackles, make thirty nine breaks, So that's probably
a fiction of what we created. And again it's just
a finishing part. So get excited around that. Fall in
(24:10):
love with finishing really just the ability to keep trusting
you your instinct and you know, the conditions this week
might be a little bit different, which you expect everything here,
so we're just adapt to that, but still at the
same mindset around you know, becking ourselves.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
So Break twenty tackles and May thirteen line breaks What
a great phrase. Though after that, you've got to fall
in love with finishing. Got to fall in love with finishing.
Love it?
Speaker 5 (24:34):
Hello, Jeff, Yeah, gay, Yeah, what's the game on Saturday Night?
Down with Michael taven here and Pap mar Yep? What
can I say?
Speaker 7 (24:50):
I think the book.
Speaker 5 (24:51):
Long checking you know, Uh, we're getting into the trouble
to clear it out? Uh. I think instead of putting
them got up and under and given the old break
does to get there and even the ball off Fronce
wasn't happening. I think this long, just as kicking isn't right.
(25:14):
I don't believe that you can one rugby that way.
I think the lineouts were good. The all blacks weren't
in most.
Speaker 8 (25:23):
Of the ball in the line outs.
Speaker 5 (25:27):
I think there was a guy there at the tavern.
We couldn't figure out why they wouldn't allow or try.
But I don't I don't think that they should have
put the try points up on the board because then
they took them off. Why why why do they do that?
Speaker 8 (25:48):
Well?
Speaker 2 (25:48):
I guess when they I guess when they when the
balls dotted down, they they say, okay, there's a try,
and the person in charge of the graphics on the broadcaster,
puts up the five points and leaves it there until
it's chalked off. And he had to do that three times.
He or she had to do it three times on Saturday,
(26:09):
because three times there was try scored and three times
they were chalked off by TMO. We spoke a lot
about this on the show yesterday, and not really that
keen to revisit it tonight. But I'm glad you. I'm
glad you enjoyed it at a top I've been to
the Papamoa Tavern, Jeff top Spot. Not a surprise at
all that you enjoyed yourself down there. Thanks for your call.
(26:33):
How intense was the review that Razer and his coaches
put the players through.
Speaker 6 (26:38):
I think it's just honest, you know, like you shape
it how we can be better as all blacks? What's
a black standard? And we just get on with it
and you wear a couple on the chin, a few
of them. But you're also really honest and show what
you did well. We did so much great stuff, but
we started things how we can improve and then finish
off with Look, this is what we created. It's kit
excited with finishing those opportunities. You know, we said peace
(27:00):
was standing. We've put a lot of work into it,
and just it's the foundation.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
That's the voice of razor of call. Text here put
to Mothy Tavatavai at twelve and leave Jordan on the
wing and put Jordi Barrett at fifteen. I think Jeordie's
at twelve now. I know he can play there. I
know he can. And look, we've thought that Rico Yoanni
was a center and only your censor up till now
(27:26):
and now is back on the wing. So I guess
it's not beyond the realms of possibility that you could
have Jordi Barrett at fall back. Maybe that happens in game.
I just don't see a set of circumstances under which
to Mathi tavatava why starts on Saturday or in Hamilton.
But maybe he comes on and they seem keen on
(27:47):
him as a midfielder rather than as a winger, and
maybe he goes into twelve, and maybe that's when Jordi
goes to fall back.
Speaker 8 (27:56):
Hello Grant, Yeah, Piney, I did feel sorry for Properer
with those two shockers at the start when he got
badly beaten on the outside side, and we know Rico
is a fantastic defender, and then sort of later on
that sort of passed to the invisible man.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
I don't know, that was odd. That was very Unbilly Procter,
like when I've watched a lot of him play for
the Hurricanes this year, as I know you have as well. Granted, honestly,
that was so unlike him.
Speaker 8 (28:30):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, you know, we can't blame him
for that. It was just a fortunate that losing he
had to stretch out his hand and losing control. I mean,
that can have so don't blame him. Don't blame him
for that. The only change therefore, I would make, and
I'm wondering, did they select Caleb Clark as a wing
(28:53):
and they're now thinking, oh, he's about number five wing,
We'll bring someone else and then we'll keep him out.
I would put Rico, so I would start Rigo back
the center. He did look a bit lost on the wing,
didn't pay there for a number of years, and did
say that the job of the wingers changed since since
he's paid there, and propped her on the bench and
(29:19):
Caleb Clark on one wing and possibly the Whitecaddo guy
another pronounces yep, yeah, to come in, leave Jordan at
full back. I mean so I think there was some
text was suggesting about four or five changes in the
(29:40):
back line. Yeah, positional changes. I think that's probably not
a good idea. And it certainly looks like France have
got a very good under twenty system. And I had
some young players there and I was very impressed with France,
(30:01):
and I think it'll be another close game and you
could go down to the one on the second.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Yeah. And in terms of those positions, grant, I mean,
Caleb Clark is a wing and only a wing. There's
no other position that he can play. He is a
and in many ways he's a left winger and only
a left winger. I'm sure he could play on the
right if you really needed him to. But yeah, if
he was going to come and then you need to
play him on the left wing, yep, Rico, he could
(30:28):
go back to center. I really like the idea of
will Jordan at fallback because when you get to that
game on September the sixth, and I know it's not
the be all and end all, but when you get
to that game at Eden Park against the spring Box
on the sixth of September, Will Jordan will be wearing
the number fifteen jersey. So my gut is that you
should play him in that jersey as often as you
(30:49):
can in the lead up to that game.
Speaker 8 (30:53):
Yeah, he said he wants to play fullback. He regards
full back as his best position. I think, I mean
he can't play on the wing of his though he's
such a dynamic runner. He's good in both positions, but
I think he better at fullba. And yeah, i'd say
bring our white ketto man in and give Caleb Clark
(31:17):
a run.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Yeah, good on your grant. Good thoughts as always from you, mate,
Good to chat to you. Ruben Love will be great
in the air. He steps and has a big boot,
says Simon, So would be okay on the wing. Look, look,
if you've said to Ruben Love, if you plan on
the wing, he'd jump at the chance, absolutely, jump at
the chance. Got a couple of tries on debut, didn't
he coming off the bench and going onto the wing
against Japan. Simon goes on to say, my priorities would
(31:42):
be high ball practice, loose ball gathering and finishing drills
and skills this week. That's not a bad that's not
a bad little list there. Simon Raiser again on balancing
rewarding performance with giving guys games. He said, all along
he wants to play everybody in these three tests. He
(32:04):
wants everything. He wants everybody to get onto the at
some stage. So how does he balance the fact that
a lot of guys probably thought they did okay on Saturday,
particularly the debutants who he went out of his way
to say all had good games. So how do you
balance rewarding that with making sure that everybody gets a crack.
Speaker 6 (32:23):
That's the art of it. You consider it all, you
trust your instinct and you know, one good thing we've
been proud of in the period we've had the all
Blacks as the guys that the players that have come
and have stepped in from test football had performed, you know,
and stepped up that level quickly. And it's a part
of the environment and getting them ready. They've got themselves
reading through super and then our job is to do
(32:44):
it through test weeks and the plats around them and
supporting them and trusting the ability. And that's pleasing just.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
On the debutants as well. Last year, A Razer gave
ten players and all Blacks debut and on Saturday another four.
So that's fourteen by my maths and just about everybody's
maths across a year and one aim. So what's that
What he expected was fourteen the number that he would
have expected to give daboos to after a year and
(33:15):
one test when he took over.
Speaker 6 (33:17):
I think when you have all those centurions, centurions lead,
you know, after the World Cup, in a natural World
Cup cycle, you're going to have a natural changeover. And
you know, my job is to create four deep in
all the positions over this period, you know, to the
next World Cup, and so you're literally going to give
players opportunities, and we just pleased a lot of them
(33:41):
have taken them, you know, and and forced their hand
and make sure it makes it tough for us to
select a team. But look, we'll see, here's always injuries,
here's always someone next in. You know, we've had a
training kep with it. We've had a group of young
guys that are just on the peripheral that came in
and we were so impressed with up at the mount.
(34:01):
So you're always looking, always, you know, where someone else
could come in. But we'll please the moment.
Speaker 2 (34:07):
Gavin says, I think the All Blacks went well on Saturday,
and maybe we should give the French more credit because
if the shoe was on the other foot, we would
still expect a second string All Blacks team to push
most international sides. Thanks Heaven, a couple more texts here.
You cannot in capital letters, says Mars move Jordan to
the wing. That would be like playing Christian Culor at center.
(34:30):
And no, I still haven't got over that. Yeah, that
was the That was when they had to try and
fit everybody in Mars. Remember that they heo did he have?
He had? He had Tana Umanger, Christian Cullen, Jeff Wilson
and Joon Olomu and thought how am I going to
get all these guys in? And he ended up this
was John Hart and instead of moving Tana to center,
(34:50):
which would have been a good move as it proved
later in his career, he put Colly at center. Didn't
he didn't work. It's like when we were looking for
I remember did Ben Smith play at center for a bit?
We were looking for a replacement for I think for
replacement for Conrad Smith after twenty fifteen, and Ben Smith
(35:12):
had a couple of games at center and that didn't
really work. I mean he was a great footballer, Ben Smith,
but really a back three player. Just on Will Jordan,
his try scoring record is absolutely phenomenal. Forty tries now
in forty two games. The record is forty nine by
Doug Howllett. Will Jordan's going to get there. He could
(35:34):
get there this year. The only guys in front of
him and Doug Hallet's got forty nine Christian Cullen, Julian
Savia and Joe rock Othoco all on forty six. Boden
Barrett has forty five, so he can go past Doug
Howlett as well, and probably will Jeff Wilson forty four
and then Will Jordan forty in forty two tests, he
(35:54):
could easily have the record by the end of this year.
Ricky Ewan he's got thirty seven by the way, so
he's sniffing about there as well. Final piece of audio
from Razor is about the conditions in Wellington. Does he
plan for them?
Speaker 6 (36:09):
Oh, look, it's fresher, you coming here, you playing for
all of it, and you know, if you respect this
a great thing about rugby, you know, like you've got
a full house of crowd coming along that they'll put
another layer on in a beanie and we'll just get
into it. And I think it's the pleasures of our game.
You know, it's we've had some remarkable games and pretty
pretty tough conditions, haven't we, And you know that's they
become iconic. And that's your plan to have a great
(36:30):
week and go out and play what's in front of us.
Speaker 2 (36:32):
There is Scott Robertson ahead of Test two Saturday night,
full commentary on News Talks. He'd be built up from
six commentary from seven on Saturday night. It's fourteen away
from eight. Let's get a break away when we come back.
We'll rate the weekend Piney's Power rankings after this.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
Our rankings.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
You simply cannot beat this time of the week when
we do Piney's Power Rankings, rating the best, the worst
and the in between. Bits from the Sporting Weekend Rugby
team eighteen that's right, eighteen straight defeats. They play it back,
they cleared it to the stands. The clock is in
(37:16):
the red.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
It's a massive win for Japan, while.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
It's another disastrous result for the Welsh. An eighteenth consecutive
defeats I'm sure they went one day eventually, maybe nine.
William Lawson this week failing to reach the end of
the first lap at Formula one's British Grand Prix at
Silverstone and.
Speaker 6 (37:39):
Liam Lawson has stopped ish, He's just crawling away to
a safe place.
Speaker 2 (37:44):
Double yellow flags by way.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
That's Lem Lawson on the right hand side off and
that was only ever going to send the racing horse
spinning towards the.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Barris taken out on the first lap. Unfortunately not to
be for Liam Lawson. After a career based race in Austria.
Cheat the Warriors woman back in the NRLW. So the
Warriors are back but beat it in game one twenty
twenty five. We last saw them at twenty twenty. They
will be a fantastic addition to NRLW again. Indeed they
(38:18):
will a tough loss, but great to have them back
after five years away. Seven the All Blacks and at
seven are win but a bit to work on you All.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
Blacks hang on twin Test number one of twenty twenty
five thirty one twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Great to see four debutantes though, bring on this coming Saturday.
Six Six's talk back caller Steve Yesterday who had a
great night on Saturday night, and outlining the correct way
to celebrate winning three bets on the All Blacks Test.

after shape. From here five into the top half, will
we find Joey Chestnut top dog again, shy.
Speaker 6 (39:23):
Of a god perhaps, but more than a man.
Speaker 3 (39:27):
The Nathan's famous fourth of July, Champion of the World.
Speaker 2 (39:32):
Joey Chestnut. It's the king of eating, reclaiming his throne.
Key we golfer Kazuma Kabori producing the best result of
his career.
Speaker 1 (39:43):
Boy to the final hole once he got for the patrons.
Speaker 5 (39:47):
Oh, he's got a cracker.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
It's a super second and quite some way back. There's
an excellent final round.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Yeah, great finish wonderful week. A third place finish at
the latest European Tour events in Munich, free the Junior
Tall Blacks. Fourth fourth at the feb Under nineteen World Cup.
It's a top pill.
Speaker 1 (40:06):
To swallow for the tall Black seat, but that can
be proud of finishing in four position this year's in
the nineteen World Cup competition.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
That is significant and this is a golden generation of
male basketball talents. Two The Guizz Shane Van Gisberg and
victory at a disrupted NASCAR street race in Chicago, matching
his feet on debut in twenty twenty three in NASCAR
you spell Chicago SVG Shaan Gisburg and wins again in
(40:39):
the Windy City.
Speaker 5 (40:40):
Here.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
The victory also comes a day after his triumph in
the Exfinity Series on the same track, but he's nudged
out of the number one spot by Scott Dixon. The
checked flag at the latest Indie Car race in Ohio.
It's a twenty first straight season within a victory for
Scott Dickson. What a brilliant win y Scotty Dixon number
(41:05):
one just on the rationale him over the Giz twenty
one straight years winning an Indie Cars everybody else are
three stop strategy. He only put it twice here, but
lucky with Alex Pillow's mistake, but still amazing. The giz
still great. One two for Motorsport tonight. Yeah, be enough
with that.
Speaker 9 (41:22):
I mean there's no turning up to BK with brute arthurshaven,
pocket squares and everything. Might be the most overdressed man
for a Burger King, but Steve absolutely he deserves the
Unexpected Hero of the Weekend award. I think that if
we can start that.
Speaker 2 (41:39):
Yeah, we could maybe, yeah, we could fashion a new
award of that type.
Speaker 6 (41:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Great to have Steve on the show yesterday and the
Power rankings tonight six to eight. They're back next Monday,
