the Rugby Championship is out. Finlay Christy and uncapped crusader
Kyle Preston have been handed call up. Says the All
Blacks deal with something of a half back injury conundrum
(00:45):
ahead of the Rugby Championship. Christy and Preston part of
a six player injury cover group named today for the
start of the tournament, covering the absences of cam Roy Garden,
Noah Hotham, bay of Plenty, Duo Leo, Leroy Carter and
Tavita Muffa Lao coming for Caleb Clark and Tyrell Lomax, respectively.
George Bauer and Josh Lord complete the injury cover group.
(01:07):
They're covering to Mighty Williams and Luke Jacobson. Williams, though
will travel to Argentina. Uncapped Chiefs loose forward Simon Park
has been named in the squad ahead of Christian Leo
Willie and Dalton Papa Lee Wallace setiti back from injury,
and Peterlakey is named for the first time this year.
Those are the main features All Blacks Assistant coach Scott
(01:28):
Hansen standing by the chat with us about some of
these selections and to look ahead to these two test
matches in Argentina. We'll hear from Scott robertson tonight as well,
and I'm keep for your views on today's squad and
what you think it may be sign posts for the
Rugby Championship and the type of game the All Blacks

Speaker 2 (02:34):
B Uncap Chiefs and Northland loose forward Simon Parker and
the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad named today.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
Popping up on the right hand side. They are over
the side Simon Parker, who scores the Chiefs first of
the night.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Simon Parker impressing during the Chiefs Super Rugby season before
an untimely injury ruled him out of the latter part
of their run to the final. Who didn't play the
semi or the Grand Final. He got through forty minutes
for the Tanifa in their ran Furley Shield challenge against
Tatannucky over the weekend enough for him to be included.
As mentioned, three more uncapped players will travel to Argentina
(03:10):
as injury cover, including Crusaders and Wellington halfback Kyle Preston.
Chiefs and Bay of plenty flyer Leroy Carter is there
and his MPC teammatee Tavita Muffeleo, George Bauer and Josh
Lord also named his cover. No room for Christian Leo
Willie or Dalton Papoli. All Black's assistant coach Scott Hansen
(03:30):
is with us. Scott, thanks for your time tonight. Must
always be special to name an All Black squad, even
though this isn't the first one of the year. Can
ask about the players who were named to play against
France but couldn't through injury. How good to welcome to
mighty Williams and Wallace Atiti back into the fold.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
You get that funny oppressively. It is an exciting day
when you get the privilege to announce the Allbacks squad
for our next campaign. I will also mate we still
ring all those involved, so whether it they are Body
Barrett who's playing nearest one hundred and fortieth test or
someone achieving their first in the line. So it's a
(04:10):
great opportunity to call those people and to congratulate them.
For those boys that are coming back in here. They've
done well so some injuries during super and the like,
but just to get back through our medical staff and
prepare themselves to be available for this campaigns great for us.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
We heard the news yesterday that Cam Roygard is nursing
a stress for actual Lets hope that he's not too
long out of the squad. Obviously Noah Hotham with his
high ankle sprain as well. You've got Cortez on Artima there,
and you've brought in Finlay Christy and experienced half back
and Kyle Preston a debuton. Can you talk us through
the thought process there all?
Speaker 5 (04:48):
It is exactly that we have the opportunity to call
and Finlant your office is a tremendous amount of experience.
We've had our eyes on him Wipe through super back
end of the Blues was really influenced around his game.
And then you have Kyle who's gone down to the Crusaders,
(05:09):
who started the year really well with them, took an
injury during the year, but came back well by the end,
in particular a test match moment when he came up
against the Chiefs in the final and it gave us
a lot of confidence around where he is in his
game and it's de signing for us to continue to
grow our nine stock obviously disappointed for the boys that
aren't here with us. However, a massive opportunity is to
(05:33):
see Finlay and Cole Priston back in our environment.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Another very popular inclusion in your squad for the first
time as Chiefs lose forward Simon Parker. I think you
and I spoke about how impressed you'd been with him
right across the Super season. Just at the end he
stuffered that injury which kept him out. How pleased are
you to be able to include Simon Parker and the
All Blacks for the first time.
Speaker 5 (05:54):
Yeah, they have Simon come in the off was the
ability to play six and eight. He's a big man
and test matches require that. So there's also obviously room
for the smaller, more dynamic, loose forward. But what he
gives us is a good mixture around a loose forwards,
the ability to cover six and eight and we need to.
(06:15):
We now have the capacity to throw out some big
men that will carry hard get to the game line.
It gives our mix in the squad a really good flavor.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
Yeah, and you mentioned it there. There is still room
clearly for the dynamic, smaller loose forward. Doupeles say good
if he's a great example of that. But as Simon Parker,
the kind of big body that you feel you're going
to need in these upcoming physical tests against Argentina and
South Africa in particular.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
Yeah, Well, first and foremost, just giving him the opportunity
and putting the jersey on him getting in within the environment,
and then it's for him to decide how that looks
around his performances. We just want to give him the
opportunity as a big man. We feel we can use
him well within our game plan. So excited to have
(07:02):
him in.
Speaker 6 (07:03):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Ricco Yuani's listed as an outside back. Is he now
off the table as far as the midfield conversation is
concerned or not?
Speaker 5 (07:12):
No, I don't believe. So we know Rico has paid
a lot of tests at center. We know that he's
a quality center. But just where we are at the moment,
we know that he can cover center. But we just
see him on the win at stages this year. We
may see him in the third end jersey. We're very
lucky with his experience. He's an absolute competitor. He's getting
his frame and his game back into the wingers role.
(07:37):
We're excited for the team around that. But still with Rico.
He's he's still a center that we trust and we
know we can put there for quiet.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Leroy Carter is another one I wanted to ask you
about again. Probably you know they're or thereabouts. When the
squad for the French series was named, he missed out there.
He's in his injury cover for Caleb Clark. What do
you like about Leroy Carter?
Speaker 5 (08:01):
The influence around the ball, Jase. So he's one of
those players that during a game you hear his name
mentioned often. He's around the ball. He makes things happen
around it. He's decided with his carry. He can be
physical because of his sevens background, very good at the breakdown.
You look at international rugby in the effort that's put
(08:23):
out in the wide breakdowns to slow our ball down
from the opposition. To his strength out there to one
maintained position, and to be disruptive on the other side.
He came and trained with us in the Hamilton week
and basically ripped up the bits during the week so
that just as all that coaches, we walked off the
(08:45):
field and sort of gave each other the little whire around. Yep,
he may be ready to go, So we're excited to
get him in. He's a ball of energy, physical for
a small man. There'll be areas that he needs to
grow in his game, but we've picking him for all
the good books for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Yeah, and I guess these guys are listed as injury cover,
but well, I guess Christian Leo Willie showed us in
the French series. Just because you're named in that capacity,
it doesn't mean you can't play test matches. You're expecting
that everybody whose name is read out, either in a
full time capacity or his injury cover could play test
rugby before you. Over the next little while.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
We're expecting to prepare them all to play test match rugby.
It's a tough competition, this one. So each week the
focus for us is to build cohesion and get us
our strongest team ready, so we keep it for us
as coaches is promoting the environment that everyone's working hard
to compete and be available for selection for sure. Now
(09:45):
whether or not everyone is selected, well, it's just test
footy and that's for us what's best for the team
that week.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
How different Scott, will your preparation be for Argentina compared
to the way you prepared the team for France.
Speaker 5 (09:59):
Yeah, good question. I think we've got a little bit
of cohesion influence in our game in the first three tests.
We've looked at it obviously and been through it around
where we can better, where we must be better. There's
a lot of really good positives in our game. But
now we've had a little snapshot of where we are,
(10:19):
had a little look around the world around where rugby's
at and the trends are, and we feel we've got
our game in a good spot. But the massive challenge
going to Argentina against a team that played well against
England in the most recent series there. But they'll be disappointed,
so they'll be hungry, so looking forward to getting over
(10:41):
and getting in front of them for sure.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Can you start to plan for South Africa or do
you have to focus exclusively on Argentina for the next
two weeks.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
I think we're best to focus on what's in front
of us and that Test match one against Argentina. The
keep it there is what you can do from it.
So you've always got a viewer where you want to
grow your game, and you've always got a view around
where you need it to be at certain stages. But
for the all Blacks. We just know focusing on each test,
being as good as we can on those moments as
(11:15):
what's most important, and from that you build Ghesian confidence
and from that you take your learning. So for us,
raise pretty clear around where our focus is and that's
definitely on Argentena one.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
And you've released a bunch of your players back to
NPC duty and it was great to see so many
of them turning it over the weekend for their provincial sides.
It looked as though most of them enjoyed it too,
even those who were on the losing side of the scoreline.
But those who didn't play in PC, I guess the
ones who had the heavier workload against France, those who,
perhaps I could you could call your frontline players. I
know you don't distinguish them that way. What have you
(11:51):
asked of you guys who haven't gone back to NPC
in this time and between the French series and the
Rugby Championship.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Yeah, I think the first but of the question is
the boys that went back to their provinces. They absolutely
love their provinces, getting back to their clubs. They love
playing for their provinces. And how we finished the French
series in our room was those they get the opportunity
and the privilege to go back to play for their provinces,
play well and lead your province as well, share your
(12:21):
experiences and make sure those young players that you go
back with learn and growth from you. The other side
of that is the boy that don't play put on
a really good recharge, re energize, reconfirm program through Kelly,
our since and our medical and they do a lot
(12:43):
of hard work in the background get and self prepared
both physically and mentally for the coming weeks. And as
you've acknowledged, it's ottween the two and then we go
into the Rugby Championship around six tough tests coming up,
so it's just a chance for those boys to get
themselves right. And you think about some of those boys
(13:03):
that have just come through finals footy and the like
and what they needed. So the last number of weeks
have been used really well for them.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
How much you're looking forward to getting back into camp though?
Speaker 5 (13:13):
Yeah, Yeah, the dog's been, The dog's been World walk
the Whites haven't. We looked like it's time to go
back to work. So yeah, we're ready for sure, excited
to get in You when you are away from the boards.
You really do miss them. They are the focused every
day to get better. They're positive, they've got great energy.
So when you're not with them, you do.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
Mister them my bit.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Well, we're excited to watch what happens in the in
the coming week. Scott, thanks for joining us tonight. Really
appreciate your time as always.
Speaker 5 (13:41):
Pleasure to n you.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Mark, Thanks, Jase, No, thank you Scott. Scott Hansen, the
assistant coach of the All Backs, joining us on Sports
Talk unpacking a few features of the squad. It's a
seven twenty one. Your chance to react to anything you
heard there from Scott Hanson or anything that has been
sort of swirling around inside your brain today after you
heard these names read out, or you heard them on
(14:02):
the radio or read them somewhere and around midday, oh
eight hundred eighty ten eighty, we learned yesterday around two
o'clock about cam Royguard's injury to add to that of
Noah Hotham. So just one of the three half backs
in the squad that has been named the official Rugby
Championship squad, just one of the three half backs will
(14:24):
actually go to Argentina, and that is Cortez Ratima as
injury cover. Fin Lake Christi brings the experience Kyle Preston
will be in for the first time. The others who
were talked about were the likes of Xavier Rowe, who
at the Chiefs has formed a pretty good one two
punch actually with Cortez Latima. In fact, Roe would have
started from memory as many games as as Latima did.
(14:49):
They there wasn't a definite pecking order as far as
that was concerned. Have a quick look and see if
the facts actually back it up. Well, actually they sort
of do. Latima eleven starts Row six, so I guess
it was more often Latima start and Row coming off
the bench. But as we know, it's a twenty three
man game these days. So Xavieroh has talked about Sam
(15:12):
Knock and Tofa Funaki up at the Blues for ower Fuckatava.
Now masses us, what's happened to falaer Fi Katava to
throw him on the scrap people like this really annoys
me because he can't play for Tonga either. The guy's
a class player. Well, Mas, actually that an actual fact
forlour Fuckatava now can play for Tonga. It's been three
(15:33):
years since his last test. He only played the two
of them. You'll probably remember them. They were both losses,
both to Ireland. In July of twenty twenty two, Valo
Fuckatava came off the bench for a Test debut in
Dunedin and also played the following week in Wellington. Those
are his only two tests. The second of those was
on the sixteenth of July twenty twenty two. Therefore, having
(15:57):
not played for the All Blacks since then, he's He's
had his three year standout, so he is eligible should
he be selected to play Tonga. It's perhaps the reason
why he's not here. They may well have said to
Flow even now or in the past, since Razel took over,
(16:19):
he made are you interested? And he has probably said
to them, you know what, I'm gonna throw my lot
in with Tonga. Born in nikel Alofa. So maybe that's
the reason. I don't know that to be true, but
I don't think you'll see falal Fo Katava in a
in an All Blacks Jersey again. You may well see
him in a tongue in Jersey at some stage they've
gone Christie and Preston. Not too many arguments there. You'd
(16:41):
imagine in the first Test it'll be Finlay Christie who
who wears the twenty one jumper rut them at the start.
Christie to come off the bench safe set of hands,
been there before twenty three Test matches. But depending on
how they go, you think they might give Cole Preston
to run the second one. Big bodies is the other thing.
Big bodies they've gone with Simon Parker Berg Unit. Peter Larkeye,
(17:05):
big big guy to Paul Vaty is already there and
looking like he's going to be tried again or persisted with,
and that's not a bad thing. They continue the the
and even this sounds wrong, the experiment of tupor Vaty
at number six. I think they have to now that
they've more than dip their toe in the water with it.
(17:28):
They've they've started touporvit Ye at six and the first
two tests against France he couldn't play the third one
through concussion. I think he starts at six of the
first Test against Argentina. It feels as that have gone
down the road. Now Argentina might be where they make
their final decision. But having Simon Parker there, they were
(17:49):
very impressed with him during Super Rugby. He would probably
have been selected in the squad had he been fit
when it was first name for the French Tests. I
get the feeling he would still have been there, or
would have been there had he not been injured, so
he might get an opportunity. And I was just thinking
about the number of players as well who have played
(18:13):
for the All Blacks this year so far. Thirty three
have played so far this year. If you add everybody
else who's been caught up to the Rugby Championship squad,
including those as injury cover, it's forty three players forty three.
So the thirty three that played against France, add another
ten in this squad and the injury cover forty three
(18:36):
Last year in fourteen test matches right across the year,
the All Blacks only used forty two players in the
entire year, and now we've had forty three either play
being a squad or be there as injury cover. It's
an astonishingly high number, isn't it. Oh eight one hundred
(18:57):
and eighty ten eighty To pick up on anything you
like from the All Black squad, you can think about
what the loose forward trio might look like. That's an
interesting one for me. We know Ardie Savila, I'd say
Wallace a tit. Where's the eight? Is it going to
be Simon Parker who gets an opportunity there? All they
persist with to Porva you think they will for the
first Test. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see Simon Parker
(19:19):
get an All Blacks debut in one of these two
matches and be involved against South Africa when berg Berg
bodies will be required. I eight one hundred eighty ten
eighty seven twenty six back with some of your calls
and feedback on the All Blacks when we come back
on Monday night Sports Talk.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
The right call is your call on eight hundred eighty
ten eighty Sports Talk all on your home of Sports
News Talks ABB.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
News Talks seven twenty nine. I eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty heaps coming through on text which I will
get to. But Kenda have a yarn to you about this.
You want to get your point across beer line there.
I eight one hundred eighty ten eighty talking the All
Black squad for the Rugby Championship. Just before we get
to your text, Scott Robertson did some media this afternoon.
He talked about the half back sitt suation.
Speaker 8 (20:07):
Obviously got cam Reguard who's got a fracture in his
foot that makes it hugely changing, and with Noah with
a high ankle spain set operation on it. So there's
two we have cover obviously with Cole coming in and
from Christy coming in someone with experience in a debutante.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
So does raise or expect cam Royguard and or Noah
Hope them to play some part in the Rugby Championship.
Speaker 8 (20:29):
Yeah, that's that's the plan. The doc's been on overtime
actually in the last couple of weeks. We're asking for
every medical opinion we can get in the world where
it feels like just so we can fast track them.
The obviously hugely important to us and we're trying to
find any way we can to make it as quick
as possible for them to return safely.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah. So cam Rouyguard feels like he's going to be
okay quicker than Noah Hotham. I think Hotham's original prognosis
had him out until September, so he may or may
not even be ready for South Africa. Royguard, on the
other hand, hopefully he should be stress fractures though you
never know, do you.
Speaker 6 (21:01):
Hello, Tim, Hey boney, it's good to hear you back
on there my head. Watson talking about you on his
radio station.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
It wouldn't have been it wouldn't have been. It wouldn't
have been complimentary. If I know Mark Watson, I said, hey.
Speaker 6 (21:17):
You leave my pony alone. Made But anyways, but the
All Black Squat I think it was what forty two
or something like that they were named. I think it
was about six injury cover.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
That's right.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
It's good to see Simon Parker get a run. I mean,
he's been a means for the Chiefs. He's been a
means for Northland one hundred and what twenty odd cakes? Yeah,
one nine seven centimeters. What I'm worried about is the
Hapick situation. Obviously they bought what's his name from from
the Blues from Tasman Beckon Christie, Yes, yep, yep yeah,
(21:50):
And they bought you're Wellington boy in.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Yes, Riston Carl Preston. Yes, he's obviously playing for the Crusaders,
which I think is a misstep from the Hurricanes just
quietly but no, no, he's on well think about her. He
won the club rugby title with Old Boys University last
club season, then he won the MPC with Wellington, then
he won Super Rugby with the Crusaders. He's a serial winner.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
Well, he was behind Roygat that was the problem. He
couldn't get into that Hurricane team. It's probably the best
half pick in the world in my opinion. People might
might differ from that. But what I am worried about.
I mean, did you watch that wannab These game on
the Wiki?
Speaker 2 (22:26):
I did, bel I did.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
Did you see how physical they were? I mean, I
haven't seen a physical Wallaby silo that in twenty five
years made too.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
Yeah, yeah, I thought that too actually, And I wonder
whether you know you've got to muscle up against the Lions.
And as I was saying to Scott Hansen before talking
about the physicality we expect from Argentina and South Africa,
I even thought to myself, to me, you know, I
probably should have had Australia given the evidence of Saturday night,
particularly in the wet If it's like that, you.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
Know, and that's what we're going to come up against,
I know Argentina will be a problem in themselves, specially
at scrum time a man Lomex probably won't playing the
first Test, but yeah, just said half pack. I think
that Artim will will probably start for me and he
brings Findley off the bench. But what do you who
do you suspect to be captain? Because there's bad.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
He is for yes he is, and so he'll be
there and if he years, he'll be captain. And if
it's not him, it'll be Arti. Just the way it
was when when Barrett didn't play the last Test against France,
was that it did play the second one I can't remember,
but certainly not. Yeah, he played the first one, didn't he?
Speaker 7 (23:29):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (23:29):
And the second of Wellington because I remember chatting to
him after Wellington. But yeah, but it'll be Arti if
it's not Scott Barrett.
Speaker 6 (23:36):
And man, it's going to be a magic rugby championship. Wait,
I mean the Six Nations was probably the second division
title and then he's got the Rugby Championship coming up.
The four best teams in the world, let's say it now.
And I can't wait for Eden Parker on September sixth the.
Speaker 2 (23:53):
Game, So I am exactly the same. Great to chat
to him, mate, Thanks for calling and always love chatting
sport with you, my friend. Oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty, ye're just on Simon Parker. Razor was asked
about why that gone with Simon Parker, what they liked about.
Speaker 8 (24:07):
He's a big man. He's been incredibly consistent all year.
Obviously got the ankle injury and then come straight back
out in great condition, paid really well for anyfa just
like his accresy. He's a big man that's physical, but
he's really accurate and he's intimidating.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Here's a bit more on Simon Parker from Razor.
Speaker 8 (24:24):
He came through sort of the age groups and twenty
and stuff and so had a lot of promise and
then was injured and he had back two or three
back to back injuries and just couldn't quite get his rhythm.
And then in the last year or two's got on
the field incredibly professional. You know, his body type and
has changed just being in the chiefs and consistency of
(24:44):
playing footy week to week. He's a big man, he's tough.
Buddy's accurate too. I think that's the key thing for him.
So we're just really pleased he's he's coming at the
right time that.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
Is Scott Robertson's voice, Gary on Test get a pint.
It looks like Ethan black at his All Black's career
is over, very disappointing. I don't think it's over. I
think Ethan black It still has a bit to offer.
Here's Razor on Ethan Blackadder. By the way, yep, talk
to Ethan.
Speaker 8 (25:11):
We're constantly even conversations with You know, there's guys that
are right on the peripheral. Been through a lot with Ethan,
so tough phone calls.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Yeah. So I don't think that closes the door on
Ethan Blackadder. They're just probably looking for something different at
the moment, a bigger, bigger body in the in the
sixth Jersey. I know Ethan Blackatta can cover a few
different positions, but obviously Peter Larkey is ahead of him
in that regard, and Luke Jacobson as well in terms
of that utility value. Devon's is pinty. It seems that
(25:40):
if you play for the Crusaders at any level, you'll
be calling to the All Blacks. It doesn't matter if
you're a third choice ooka half back of a winger.
It's a slap in the face for people who play
at a high level week in week out, Devon. I'm
not sure that the numbers actually back that up. I've
done a quick little tally on this All Black squad
of thirty six, and there are only seven crusaders in it,
(26:03):
only seven in the thirty six. Granted there are two
more in injury cover, but there are thirteen Chiefs and
two more as injury cover, so fifteen chiefs. There are
eight Hurricanes in the thirty six and another one coming
in as cover, four from the Blues, three from the Highlanders,
one from mo Onana pacifica Ardie Severe. But I'm not
(26:26):
sure that that stacks up. Only only seven crusaders in
the thirty six man squad, and only another two if
we take it up to forty two, so I'm not
sure that that necessarily stands up. Pine White. Couldn't Kyra

All Blacks Fuckatava Unlucky Delighted for Kat and Parker. I
(26:49):
think maybe Ethan's ship has sailed based on his pourer ball,
retention and tackle. I loved two porvayats six, but I'm
excited about Parker final and Frazelle when he comes back
Big Bodies. Be interesting to see how Wallace Setteti goes
in his second year. I agree with all of that.
I agree with all of that. Speaking of Kiren Talmoyfilaw,
(27:12):
we had the news confirmed today that he is going
to boost the Chiefs back line in Super Rugby next year.
He signed with the Chiefs has Kien Talmoifilaw for the
next two seasons.
Speaker 4 (27:23):

Speaker 2 (27:49):
That was his hat trick against the Blues. The New
Zealand Herald reported this move back in May, with the
Morna pacifica outside back switching to the Chiefs and has
bid to become an All Black late next year after
completing his international standdown. Karen Telmoifilow made his Super Rugby
debut in twenty twenty four he played twenty one times
former one of pacificer, scoring twelve tries. He's with us now, Karen,
(28:13):
congratulations on the move to the Chiefs. Tell us about
the discussions which led to the announcement, which was made
early this morning.
Speaker 7 (28:21):
Yeah, so it just having me, Yeah, probably a bit
of way through my winter season, got a couple of
phone calls and one being the Chiefs, and it was
lucky enough they got pretty interested, and yeah, just kind
of went from there. Quite an opportunity for my family
(28:44):
and where I want to go on my rugby career,
and yeah, I'm happy to be here.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
Tell us a bit more about the conversations you had
with the coaches and others at the Chiefs that convinced
you that this would be the right move for you.
Speaker 5 (28:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (28:58):
Well, obviously talking to the coach, talking to some of
the players, Damien McKenzie, couple of them leadership boys, and
kind of really convinced me that that this is a
this is a really good cond culture here. We've built
they build really good breaked players here and you can
see through the prestigious club and there's a lot of
(29:21):
great players that have gone before. And that was when
I was talking the coaches. We've aligned on where they
see me and and where they I can grow and yeah,
the potential where I can where I can get to.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
You mentioned some other phone calls as well, Karri, and
you had other offers to consider. I'm sure Mowana would
have been delighted to retain you. How tricky was that
decision making process as you tried to work out which
offer would be the best best one for you to take?
Speaker 7 (29:52):
Yeah, it was. It was a really tough decision for
me and yeah, hearing everyone out, but I think just
for me and my family talking, I think that the
Chiefs were really aligned and where I wanted to go
and they were really really welcoming and just with a
(30:15):
club season in the next two years as well as
where I want to be. So yeah, that was good.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
How do you reflect on your time at Mouna PACIFICAA.
Speaker 7 (30:26):
It's massive, man Like, I love that club. I love
the people there. It's a great organization. We did some
good things this year. It's got a Yeah, got a
lot of love for the club and the way that
we are the season. You could probably see through the
games as well, the passion that we have for the
team and the way it's been growing year by year.
(30:47):
I think it's just only going to get better.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
All right, let's look forward then, Where do you think
the main growth areas are in your game?
Speaker 7 (30:56):
Your growth areas of my game? It would be if
I think for myself, it's just the ability to be
a game driver. Be bombed the boys out there. So
I'm playing full back, betting another kicking option, betting the
game driver, I think, and the chiefs here, it's a
pretty big on family and having you know, you've got
(31:20):
your brains, trust, and you've got players around you who
will drive you around the field. And I think that
that'll be pretty cool to work with some of the
great tear Dave McKenzie guys like that, to really work
off and you help me out in that area.
Speaker 2 (31:34):
I'm seeing you play in the back three across the
positions full back also quite a lot on the wing
for more one PACIFICA. But is fifteen where you prefer
to be?
Speaker 7 (31:46):
Yeah, I think I think I love I love the
wing and fallback. To be honest, I don't mind. I
just want to be I've played a lot on the
on the right wing. I think that it's given the chance,
playing fullback would pretty cool because I do enjoy it there,
but it doesn't get a right place, to be honest,
I'll just take it.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
Well, there is an obvious vacancy, isn't there at full
back with Sean Stevenson having to part of the Chiefs,
And a lot of people are seeing you as a
bit of a like for like in that regard. But
are you just happy to get into the Chiefs camp
and let those above you work out where you are
best suited for them?
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (32:19):
I think for me it's probably it's my job turn
up in the best and back and turn up to
pre season with the hungry mindset of not knowing. So
it's just liking controls, to be honest, and liking controls
and gift training and how it goes about things. And
there's the only thing that I leave the uncontrolled as
the coaches where they both selection to where they see me.
(32:41):
But I just turn up and do what I do.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Do you have all blacks aspirations?
Speaker 7 (32:47):
My ambission right now is played well with the Chiefs,
and if any higher on has come, it comes. But
my first priority and only priority is the Chiefs right now.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
I guess another way of asking the question is around
your eligibility for the All Blacks because you've played for Tonga,
so you need to stand down for three years from
the last time you did to become eligib before the
All Blacks, and that's not there far away. Are you
happy to do that?
Speaker 7 (33:10):
Yeah, yeah, definitely. I think available October next year eligibility
and I wanted to find for tom and time soon.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
So all right, that's all in the future. You've got
an MPC campaign of course to get through first with Tasman.
A tough start to your season yesterday against the Steamers
and to long you still enjoy your your games with
Tasman Mark although.
Speaker 7 (33:35):
Yeah, I love it. It's passionate clubs get a lot
being at home with home for me, so no, I
love it.
Speaker 1 (33:41):
Bro.
Speaker 7 (33:42):
It's an awesome club and it didn't get the result,
but I know that we're going to come back strong
coming up against the Tours on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
I know you will. I know you will. Well. Congratulations
on this news, Car and you've got your future secure
for the next couple of years. I know a lot
of Chiefs fans were looking forward to seeing you turn
out in their colors. Congratulations mate, thanks for joining us.
Speaker 7 (34:00):
Awesome all right, take care.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
Now you take care as well, Karen. Thanks indeed, Karen
toe moi filout chief. For the next seasons, he will
be a teammate of Leroy Carter, who made every post
winner this season and earned a call up to the
All Black squad. Today his injury cover. Razer talked about
the phone call he made to Lee Roy Carter was the.
Speaker 8 (34:19):
Hell of a phone call, actually it was. It was
a nice start to here. It was very, very emotional.
Didn't say much. He was just taking a few moments,
you know, and I said, look, he chants to go
and bring your family straight after this and enjoy the moment.
He went to junior of the seventh path, like a
lot of players do this in their career and then
come back and transitions to fifteen's and through the season.
(34:41):
You just saw how many linebacks he makes. How good
is he at the breakdown, the covering tackles if it's
off the ball. He's tough, probably the fastest in New Zealand,
you know, on record time. So he's got a lot
of pauses from here, but you'd be welcome into the
doll Blacks and keep working on that craft. You're gonna
bring a lot of energy.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Let's raiser on Lee Roy Carter coming up, call it
to eight. We'll take a right come back and right
the weekend as we always do on a Monday night
Piney's Power Rankings. After this our rankings Monday night time
for Piney's Power Rankings, as we rate the weekend, the beast,
(35:22):
the worst and the in between bits. Let's go Henrith
trainer Corey Bocking during the Panthers NRL game against the
Titans on Saturday, five minutes ago, the Titans scored a try.
They are ahead twenty six twenty four, with goalkicker Jaden
Campbell lighting up the conversion.
Speaker 9 (35:40):
Raiders just drunk straight in front of Jadon Cambell.
Speaker 7 (35:43):
Well, that is disgracing that, that is disgraceful.
Speaker 10 (35:48):
If can't make that mistake, unbelievable come off.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Have ever seen that? Had you ever seen that? When
we knew about that, Well, I think he gets a
second shot Campbell, he hangs it out of the right.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
That is high controversy.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Nathan Clary then leveled the scores with a two point
drophy before the Panthers went on to win in golden point.
Hang your head in shame, Panthers trainer Corey Bocking nine.
The Wallabies saving some face and their series against the
British and Irish lines hold good over the ball still
(36:23):
there for Australia.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
Mc turbot stop.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
Fuck donuts, take mcdormonds.
Speaker 7 (36:35):
The same.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Pretty excited for a series losing test match anyway. One
twenty two twelve did the Wallabies and a rain soaked
food test in Sydney. Chat the Warrior is not quite
able to hold on against the Dolphins.
Speaker 9 (36:51):
There they go one.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Chart's half of the Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
The Turners stuff.
Speaker 9 (36:59):
Are you serious?
Speaker 2 (37:00):
Deadly serious? Monty Beetham heartbreak. Are still on the top
four the Warriors, but the chasing pack closing far us
as the injuries continue to mount.
Speaker 7 (37:09):
Seven.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
James mcconey breaking news on Weekend Sport fifteen minutes before
it happened yesterday.
Speaker 7 (37:15):
I think I've got a bombshell for you here, pony,
because I'm hearing that cam royguards injured as well. That's
just something that's going to be firmed up, possibly in
the next thirion minutes.
Speaker 5 (37:24):
So stay turned to newstorg ZB.
Speaker 7 (37:26):
For all your rugby update.
Speaker 6 (37:27):
They concerned it could be a stress practure of some kind.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
It was bang on cam royguard out for the Argentinian
leg of the Rugby Championship. Six Sprinter Noah Lyles at
the US Track and Field Champs sparge and has Noah.
Speaker 4 (37:41):
Lyles tries to reel am in Lyle slightly ahead and
looks over and says, I'm still the.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
World champion and a little bit.
Speaker 10 (37:49):
Of a booster at the end as the lavalry.
Speaker 2 (37:54):
Comes into view. Yeah, Baji badge at the end that
Noah Lyles winning the two hundred meter final in nineteen
point six to three best time of the year, five
into the top half in morning Notawa in his fiftieth
game for Bay of putting the cherry on top of
the Steamer's very impressive win over Tasman.
Speaker 4 (38:11):
It's the siron, you're here in the background, goes backwards,
drop goal and Money Nanowa with a drop goal. It's
over and Mody Nanawa scores a drup goal to make
it thirty seven seven at full time in his fiftieth NBC.
Speaker 2 (38:26):
Game and named in the All Blacks Rugby Championship squad. Today.
Neve Fisher Black finishing fifth overall in Cycling's Tour de
France fem Her equal best result on a grand tour.
Speaker 9 (38:39):
You see those gradients twelve percent, it's just brutal. And
you see the way the knee Fisher Black and you
are a castelline. This is where Nee Fisher Black can
use her claimbing price to her advantage.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
Chan Nelson Ryder coming home third and the penultimate stage
in fourth. In the final stage, Tree Leam Lawson claiming
points for the third time in his last four Formula
one starts, this time at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Speaker 4 (39:04):
Lib Lawson held off Max Stafford Racing Bulls beating Red
bull eighth place, ninth place for Bax with Stafford was
never really in.
Speaker 2 (39:14):
The race, eighth place for Leam, matching his finish in
Belgium last week and importantly the best of the Red
Bulls and Racing Bulls Stable two. The black Caps a
comprehensive victory in the first Test against Zimbabwe. I think
it's done now.
Speaker 1 (39:32):
Henry Nichols plays the pull shot to end the first
Test match inside three days.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
New Zealing win this by nine wickets, Matt Henry the
Star taking nine for ninety in the match. One one
is Kiwi BMX rider Lily Greenoff claiming the Junior Women's
World Championship title in Copenhagen.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
Does he come into the final corner, it's Greenop top
Olivier Danasa one two three.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Oh, Olivier has.
Speaker 4 (40:02):
Gone right on the final job.
Speaker 6 (40:04):
Lily Greenop takes the winning women Junior Lily Greenoff is.
Speaker 4 (40:08):
Your women Junior World champion for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (40:14):
There you go. Ant anybody hard done by tonight.
Speaker 10 (40:17):
Oh look, we really value our contributors here at News
Talk ZB, so just know that if you come on
Jason Pine's show and break some really relevant sporting news,
like James mcconey was good enough to do exclusively on
this station on the Little Head, you might get as
high as number seven in Heiney's Power rankings. What an
absolute honor. Oh, James, I bet you pat yourself on
the back for that one.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
It's a good listen Louned.
Speaker 10 (40:41):
And Mohinadawa beating Tasman so well that Andy McDonald had
to take the day off sick. He was so depressed.
I think he should have been higher as well. But
definitely a very good number one Pinty.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Good feedback, thanks indeed, and Pinety's Power Rankings back next
Monday Night six and a half to eight, four to eight,
but the Pinety's Power Rankings. Text feedback from Andy Muller. Actually,
Hockino we Gold mustar host Piney thee O my ten

a packed terrace should make at least number four in
(41:11):
the power rankings, especially as it was his terrace's debut.
Speaker 7 (41:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (41:16):
Unfortunately THEO I couldn't fit the Southland crowd in, although
I was very impressed by it. Ten thousand plus to
watch Stag Day rugby action. Matt Brown, who you might
remember as a former colleague of ours, has also got
in touch with antson Is. Looking at the NPC table
after one game with the Hawk's Bay Magpies perched on
top courtesy of their fifty four fourteen win over Counties
(41:39):
yesterday and as suggesting we call it off now, we
stopped the Counts and give Hawks Bay the NPC title. Brownie,
I'm not sure that's how it works, but I appreciate
the correspondence. Appreciate you listening in tonight to sports Talk
