Speaker 3 (00:23):

first day of spring. Happy thirty six birthday, Sophie Devine.
I'm Jason Pine show producer as Andy McDonald. As always,
we're here talking sport until late. The All Blacks casualty
ward has been updated at the start of the biggest
test week of the year and of many years in
(00:44):
terms of test matches here in New Zealand. Tamthy Tava
Tavanawai out for twelve weeks, Cam Roy Guard, Patrick Twey
pilot to Noah Hotham still three to four weeks away.
Caleb Clark and Luke Jacobson won't play the first Test,
and Cortez Latima in a race against time to be
ready after a whack in the ribs. On the plus side,
(01:05):
Tyre Lomax and Anton let it round a fit again
and Lester of fighting a nukel is back in the
All Blacks after the Board of New Zealand Rugby ticked
off his eligibility early. So what does this all mean
and how should we be feeling as the spring Box
look to end the All Blacks thirty one year winning
run at Eden Park, New Zealand. Herald Rugby writer Lim
(01:27):
Napier in studio for a Rugby chin Wagon just a moment.
Your thoughts are well and truly encouraged as well, like
to read your pulse and your confidence levels, but also
talk about some team selection and the very quick box
tick that got less to fighting a nukel back into
the All Blacks. It's the It's New Zealand Rugby's own rule,
so I'm impressed. And how quickly they they granted the exception.
(01:51):
The exemption for Leicester lines open immediately and across the hour.
First d I want to get to him for cargo
where the Ranfurley Shield has landed in the last couple
of hours. We'll get a shield country shortly find out
what it's been like inside the Southland Stags since they
won the sh shield just over twenty four hours ago.
Also tonight, Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome, after his
(02:12):
club missed selection for the inaugural Oceania Pro League, Auckland
FC and christ Church United preferred to them. This hasn't
gone down well at Phoenix HQ. David Dome on the
reasons why they missed out tonight and why they don't
agree with them, and we're too from here And on
Monday nights we always rate the weekend Pinty's Power rankings
the best, the worst, the in between bits from the
(02:34):
last couple of days. Where might the Stags be on
that list tonight? You can join the shaft you like
yet throw on the phone on oh eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty on text ninety two ninety two or
via email Jason at Newstalk SEB dot co dot MZE
coming up to ten past seven.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Forget the Riff's call, you make a call on eight
hundred and eighty eighty.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Sports Talk on your home of Sport News talks EB,
talks B.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
The Ramfhilly Shield has a new home here.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
That's folks here, that's votes. Suthland got piso.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Now, that's Minty calling it. In Hamilton yesterday, Southland reclaiming
the ran Fully Shield for the first time since twenty eleven.
Stunning white Cut or twenty five to ten and Hamilton
yesterday they were returned home to a big welcoming of
a cargo with a bit of extra cargo. Have the
Stags assistant coach Scott Eaters with us. What time did
you get to bed last night?
Speaker 5 (03:29):
Mate?
Speaker 6 (03:29):
I don't actually recall mate, to be fair, but it
was fairly late.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Now.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
We had an awesome night at the States our house
in Hamilton. They hosted us really well and there was
quite a lot of Southland Southland support there as well.
So now it was an awesome night, awesome, awesome moment. Really.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
So have you spent most of today traveling? What time
did you have to hop on a plane?
Speaker 6 (03:48):
Yeah, we went to bed. We were about I help
us nine to part of the hotel from Hamilton, so
we got home actually probably caught the four. So it's
been a few day of traveling, couple of big flights
and a bit of a windy riding, but all worth it.
An awesome reception at the airport. It was awesome to
see so many people there.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
I was going to ask that, actually you got I
got a nice welcome when your touchdown, did you.
Speaker 6 (04:09):
Yeah, it was huge. You never really quite expect to
nam and you're going to show, but yeah, three point
thirty on a Monday, It was awesome. Makes it all
worth it, I guess when you see the how much
it means to a lot of the people and all
the kids and the people who were part I guess
they're fifteen years ago when we last one, so it's special.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Who did you put in charge of it last night?
Speaker 6 (04:29):
It's a good question, young Tan Harvey. Actually he had
a bit of responsibility around it. He was part of
the New Zealand twenties teen this year, so he was
tasked of looking after and he did a fairly good job,
to be fair. And then you obviously Sean Shawn Way
led us out off the plane with it when we
got to the airport. So yeah, we'll see how it
goes tonight. Mate.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Help me well, yes, because I hear you off to
another and I'm going to use inverted commerce here although
you can't see them on the radio and not the
function tonight by the sounds of it, the Spates Ale house,
I'll look after you down there as well. Mate.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Yeah, how good.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
We're lucky. We've got all some community spports which you
at ILT and partners at the Spates, so you're heading
there and I guess just really enjoyed it enjoy the occasion,
but at the same time, the boys know that tomorrow
we need to dial and start preparing for a huge game.
But we'll definitely enjoy it. Enjoyed it last time. I
enjoyed it tonight.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
And is there any it's probably outside of your of
your brief but I mean everyone's going to want to
see it right down there, and you know you put
it online again on Saturday. So are there plans to
try and get it around the region over the next
three or four days?
Speaker 6 (05:33):
Yeah, I understand there may she's probably not quite well
in your house. But from what I understand, they're going
to hear, they're going to try and get it to
as many schools and community reostons and years community centers
as they can, and I guess from Wednesday to Friday,
So it sounds like it's going to be a gam
picked three or four days getting organized. I know that
the rugbyrself in community and Edmond team have been having
(05:55):
a busy Monday.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
At what point in the game did you know you
had it one?
Speaker 6 (06:01):
Probably in all of so I was still a wee
bit of nervousness, probably until about six or seven minutes
three school game. You always. We've seen plenty of games
where teams go thing being don't they but yeah, probably
six or seven minutes to go and we think we've
got to turnover or a penalty and was sort of
I think that was we could relax ally bit and
yeah if he smiles in the coaching box at that point.
(06:22):
So it was pretty special. The old Southland chart in
the grand stand as well, the awesome supporters that were there.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah, just awesome And I mean you won't be able
to get a ticket on Saturday. Were you at a
four o'clock kickoff? So yeah, rock on down there and
watch you guys retain it and then watch the All
Blacks later on.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Oh how good mate, huge said they coming up now,
it's going to be a special day. Four o'clock kickoff
against Kennerbury and I know I'm sure there be a
few ken every folk coming down and what better way
to challenge ourselves against the benchmark of the competition this year.
So it's going to be it's gonna be a huge one.
Looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Congrat Scott. Everybody outside the O seven was delighted yesterday. Mate,
well done. I'm glad you've enjoyed your day. Enjoyed tonight
and then back to work. I appreciate you taking the
time for a chat.
Speaker 6 (06:59):
Though, No awesome, thanks Jase.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
No, thank you. Scott scott aide there he's the assistant
coach of the Southland Stags. Who he they're on the
way that the spates allous, they might already been there.
He'smartest stepped out. He found a quiet space, didn't he.
Well done, Southland. Terrific stuff. Canterbury coming to town to
try and prize it away from you on Saturday afternoon,
just after four o'clock kickoff in that one. So yeah,
(07:22):
if you're in the the in of Cargol region. I'm
not sure what the situation is with tickets, but I
get the feeling Rugby Park will be jammed to the rafters,
jammed to the rafters on Saturday afternoon, and rightly so.
You wouldn't put a past Southland to beat Canterbury down there,
you know. If the shield wasn't there, you might say,
you know what, Canterbury, But that long of wood does
(07:45):
funny things to rugby teams, you know. I'm quite interested
to see what the odds are anyway we can get
to that seven point fifteen for stalk staying with Rugby
and earlier than expected All Blacks recall for Leicester fighting
a nukel The seven test winger has been called into
camp ahead of Saturday Nights showdown with the spring Box
at Eden Park. He replaces Tasman teammates him off the
(08:06):
Tava Tava Nahway. He's out for twelve weeks after suffering
a biock and forum and the Michael win over Otago
on the week in Fighting Nuk was back in New
Zealand after a two years in France. He wasn't expected
to be eligible for the All Blacks until after the
Rugby Championship, but the Board of New Zealand Rugby have
signed off an early release from that eligibility criteria and
(08:30):
Lester Fighting Anuku is as we speak in the All
Blacks camp. New Zealand Herald senior rugby writer and co
host of the Rugby Direct podcast, Liam Napier is with us. Liam,
thanks for stopping in tonight. Now that he's in the squad,
do you think that Lester Fighting Anuku might actually play
on Saturday Night?
Speaker 7 (08:49):
Well, Scott Robinson Evening Pooney was asked about this at
his prescurrence today and he certainly didn't dismiss it, so
I don't think it can be ruled out. Scott Robinson's
shown a capacity to make surprise selections this year. He
knows who's less defying the nook who extremely well, having
coached him for years at the Crusaders. And look what
(09:12):
a potential asset to bring off the bench. I think
I would be surprised if he was thrown straight into start.
He only came into All Blacks camp on Sunday evening,
so we'd still have, you know, you'd think a wee
bit of time to get up to speed around how
they want to play the game and the like. But
for a guy, a big, powerful, strong athlete you saw
(09:35):
the Trey scored playing for Tasman against Otaga at the weekends,
A guy who can cover seconds second five center wing
to bring off the bench massive impact against the potentially
tiring Springbok sides. I don't think you can rule that
out of the equation this week.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Given the aerial problems that the All Blacks had, in
particular in the last Test against Argentina, but really for
periods of all five Test matches this year, and given
the fact that Lester is pretty good in the air.
Do you think there would be a temptation for Scott
Robertson to put him straight into the back three somewhere.
Speaker 7 (10:13):
I think they'd certainly consider it. Yeah, I don't know
how much highball work Lester would have done in recent times.
His two years in France were predominantly spent in the
midfield playing center, but he did play a lot for
the Crusaders on the wing, and he played for the
(10:35):
All Blacks on the wing, so it's not as if
you'd be throwing in the deep ense, but that's certainly
where that South Africans are going to come for the
All Blacks. Grant Williams is one of the most effective
accurate box kickers in modern rugby. Andre Pollard's will hoist
to the heavens all night long. We know how he
(10:55):
plays and that area is massively in the spotlight. As
you mentioned, that's been an Achilles' heel for the All
Blacks this year, and the wing selections massively in the
spotlight we know. I'm quite surprised Caleb Clark hasn't been
ushered straight back into this team. He made his return
for Auckland at the weekend, but Scott Robinson's saying today
he wants him to get at least two matches in
(11:16):
the NPC before bringing him back. For me, he is
the All Black's best exponent aerial exponent that they have
great in the air, not just receiving high balls, but
off the kickoffs as well. So I am quite surprised
they're not looking to utilize him. But I think it'd
be very surprised if there aren't one, if not two
changes to the All Blacks wings this week.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
All Right, we'll get to that in the moment, because
the All Black's casualty ward update was pretty comprehensive today
and there was quite the list. Apart from Tava Tavannah
White two are the others who definitely won't play against
South Africa in either test are Cam roy Guard and
Naah Hootha. I think there were hopes that Royguard might recover.
That's not the case. And on top of that quartet,
l Artama is in a race against time to be
(12:00):
ready after a whack on the ribs. What's your gut
telling you? What did you see from Razor today? Is
Cortez a chance or not?
Speaker 7 (12:09):
I think he's an outside chance. He robertson didn't wouldn't
rule Courtiers out, talked about his toughness, and I think
we saw that in Argentine. He's got a fractured rib.
I've had one of those previously. You know, just playing
club forty and bloody hurts. You think about rugby as
a contact sport, every sort of collision you do feel that.
(12:31):
And we saw Cortez at Arsma try and play on
for I think it was ten minutes after that injury
eventually came from the field. It's only been two weeks.
I'd say a fractioned rib would generally take at least
a month to fully heal. So look, there's a chance
he gets a jab or some sort of pain medication
(12:51):
to play, but it's a massive risk. I would have
thought to throw a guy in there who is carrying
that injury, who could potentially take another knock against some
of the biggest bodies in world rugby, and then you're
you know, you're down one man for the rest of
the game. The All Black will weigh that up against.
I got Finlay Christy, who has experienced against bringing Kyle Preston,
(13:14):
a rookie into such a massive occasion, arguably the biggest
on New Zealand shows, certainly since the Lions tour, but
arguably since the twenty eleven you know, World Cup final.
So look at his unfortunate for the All Blacks, isn't it.
They've been hard in one area, as you mentioned with
the Royguard Hotham Ratama, it is an area of strength
and depth, but they are really digging deep. For me,
(13:38):
when I look at it from the outside, the fact
they've called an Xavier Rose just to me that Courtees
won't play this week, but Razors said today they are
giving him every chance to prove his fitness. Court is
this week.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
What do you think they'll do in the back three?
Speaker 7 (13:55):
I think I would like to see a Mona Ladawa
come into the mix. Look, there's an argument that Will
Jordan's probably the All Black's best wing, but I don't
think they'll move him from fullback, so he stays there.
They do need to support him because he was left
isolated on many occasions against the Pumas, So I think
Wal Jordan's at fullback. I think maybe Ammonia Daraua comes
(14:20):
on one wing, and maybe they retain Riekulwhney, But look,
he Rico really needs to improve, not just as high
ballwork defensively, but also chasing and contesting kicks, because that's
just as much an issue for the All Blacks for
me at the moment, because they're not winning back those
(14:41):
contestable kicks. So look, Razor is a very loyal selector
up into a points, but the form of the All
Blacks wingers as massively in the spotlight, and we know
how the Springboks are going to play, we know they're
going to be targeted there. So the other element to
this pointy is Wayne Smith is in camp this week
(15:02):
and one of his strengths is counterattack, and so can
they All Black If the Oblicks can diffuse some of
those kicks from the spring Walks, they could potentially conditions
dictating use it to their advantage by sparking some form
of counterattack. And I think Wayne Smith might have a
few nuggets of gold there. We know Caleb Clark's not
(15:22):
going to be there, leicstifying a look, who's an outside chance.
I don't see them throwing lee Roy Carter into the mix,
just a rookie on that occasion being peppered. He's not
the biggest wing going around, so that would be high
risk as well.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Any chance that'd mover echo your money back into center.
Speaker 7 (15:42):
Possibly, But look, I think it would be a big
knock for Billy Proctor's confidence. I think you've got to
stick with him. You've invested in him this year. You
pretty much said that Jordie and Billy is your preferred
combination in the midfield. For me, it would be a
backward step to change that up now. So I don't
(16:05):
see them making that change. Yeah, I couldn't totally rule
it out.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Are they all in on two poor V at six?
Feels like they are?
Speaker 7 (16:15):
It does, but there's probably an element that Fabian Hollands
is showing signs of fatigue, A young guy thrust into
the Test arena. He was replaced in the defeat to
the Pumas in Argentina, but prior to that played four
tests pretty much eighty minute performances. I think he came
off late in quarterbar with cramp, but huge workload throughout
(16:38):
the high end of the season straight into the Test arena,
certainly showing some signs of fatigue. So I wouldn't be
adverse to Tupo going back into Locke and looking to
bring some punch off the bench there. I think you'll
see Wallace to Teaz going earty to seven, so maybe
Simon Parker could start at six. I certainly feel like
he's more of a six than an eight, so I
(17:00):
wouldn't rule out that possibility. But they do like two
pos size at six. He offers them a strong line
out presence and if you look at what he did
in the French series, we probably haven't seen that form
replicated against Argentina against better quality opposition than what France
brought out, but that they do like that big Locke
(17:23):
sized presence at six, and Simon Parker is a similar
size figure, so I think it'd be one of those two.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
Do you think they would ever entertain the possibility of
a six to two bench split? Have a half back
there and Damien McKenzie perhaps, and then they've got cover
across their starting back line to cover the back line.
Do you think they'd entertain a six to two split?
Speaker 7 (17:46):
I think if it's ever going to be on the table,
it is for the spring Box. The only danger for me,
Pineyer is that you you're almost been sucked into how
the spring Box want to play, and you're almost better
off doubling down on your strengths. And it would be
easy for the All Blecks this week, with given the
magnitude of the occasion, given the fact they're coming off
a defeat, to be conservative, to go into their shells,
(18:09):
to play no frills, for the to try and to
be sucked into the kicking game territory kicking for points.
But for me, the All Blacks need to be brave,
they need to play, they need to back their skills,
They need to stretch the spring box and almost take
a leaf out of what the Wallabies did in South
Africa because they brought fatigue into the game and they
(18:30):
broke the spring box open. And that's for me whether
the All Black strengths lies. So yes, you could go
six to two and try and meet fire with fire
because it's not as much of a risk for the
All Blacks when you look at the versatility across that
back line. You know Boden Barrett can go back to
full back, Greco One if he's on the wing, can
go into the midfield, Jordi Barrett can cover any number
(18:52):
of positions. Damian McKenzie gives you that flexibility, so you
have the breadth of cover of replacements with the backs,
so it's not as much of a risk for the
All Blacks, but there is an elements of yeah playing
being sucked into what the Springboks want you to do,
and that's a danger for me.
Speaker 6 (19:14):
Jee.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
It's a fascinating week ahead. I can't believe it's only Monday.
I'm not quite sure I'm having going to get to Saturday.
But this conversation has certainly helped. Liam. Thanks for joining
us tonight. Mate. We'll see a bit later in the week.
It is bunny good any way. That's Liam Nape, you
New Zealand Herald senior rugby writer with his thoughts seven
twenty six. Let's talk some All Blacks rugby are eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty your levels of optimism mine
(19:36):
went down. I must say when I saw that injury
report this morning and the fact that cam Roygart can't
play either of these two tests, I was kind of
holding on to hope that he was just going to
miss the Argentina tests. He was going to rehab that
foot fracture of his it wasn't too bad and he
might be back for these games. That's not the case,
(19:57):
Noah Hotham, I think we knew he was going to
be out with that high ankle sprain, and that was
confirmed this morning. He won't be back for another three
or four weeks. So at best cam Roy Garden Nullahtha
might be okay for the Bledisloe Cup matches on the
twenty seventh of September and the fourth of October. So
that leaves us with Finlay Christie and Kyle Preston as
(20:19):
the potential halfbacks. Because Cortes l Utima, as you heard
Liam say there, has taken a nasty whack on the ribs.
They're never nice. He may well be given a painkilling injection.
Scott Robertson said today, Look, we're going to give them
every chance. It's an up till the day proposition. So
I get the feeling he'll be named in the squad
on Thursday, maybe you know named it, named it nine,
(20:45):
and Christy and Preston all we bracketed in the reserves.
And Iftima is an okay, then Finley Christie comes in
a Cole Preston off the bench. I mean, what a
moment for the young kid, way way quicker than everybody
thought it would come. He's what the fifth half back
in the pecking order at the moment. But man what
an experience for him if it does come off, if
(21:07):
he does have to play and gets to test a
BUO on such a big occasion. The back three is
the other one. What do I reckon they'll do that?
Will Jordan is the best winger in the team, as
Liam said, but I don't think they'll move him to
the wing. I think they'll keep him at fallback. I'd
be quite tempted to bring Lester Fighting and nukleback. And
I must say I thought Caleb Clarke might play this game,
having played for Auckland against Wellington yesterday, but clearly that
(21:28):
they've decided to give him another week and some more rugby.
I just can't see it being Joannie Reese and Jordan again.
Just feel like they'll tweak that. Your thoughts seven twenty
nine oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Back in a.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
Monte You hear it from the biggest names and sports men.
Have your say on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
sports Talk or more on your home of sports news
talks at.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Be twenty nine away from eight. Pioneer Pioney's power rankings
before eight o'clock rating the weekend, David Dome shortly as
well out of the Wellington Phoenix and this omission from
the inaugural Oceania Pro League which is starting in January,
and the Phoenix's omission from it. David, I'm going to
(22:11):
chat to us about that very shortly. Couple on texts
here rubin Love. I wasn't laughing about this text. It's
another one I'm going to read in a minute. Ruben
Love's very good with the high ball, two, says Peter.
Not sure what more he can do to get to
the bench. Yeah, Ruben loves on. He had the one
test he started at fall Back, I think played the
full eighty minutes and Hamilton against France. I thought he
was good that night. He certainly is very good under
the high ball, Peter, So I'd almost have him. And
(22:35):
I'm going to contradict what I said before, but I'd
almost consider Ruben Love at Fallback and Jordan on one
of the wings. Lover is good under the high ball,
good defender, brave. Yeah, I just can't see how they'll go.
Rico Yowanni severa, Reese will Jordan again could be very wrong,
but I just can't see it. Guys, it doesn't matter
(22:59):
how much you speculate about the makeup of the All Black,
says Dave. The only thing you can rye Ali on
with any certainty based on reason before they're going to
get annihilated. Dave, I since you maybe South African. I
checked the odds before actually, and I thought they might
have come in a little bit given some of the
injury concerns that were publicized this morning. But they haven't
(23:21):
changed at all from what they opened at yesterday. From memory,
and that is the All Blacks a dollar fifty five
South Africa two dollars forty. You can get two dollars
forty on South Africa if you're that confident, Dave. Roger
says Piney. Southland totally deserved the ran Furley Shield. They
played magnificently yesterday. I truly hope they cherished the six
(23:42):
days they hold it. It's Roger and RANGI order. We're
just on that. Actually, I had a quick check on
the on the odds for the shield challenge as well. Yeah,
Southland rank outside is four dollars eighty. So if you
like Southland defending it at home four dollars eighty, can
I be paying a dollar seventeen and must says Piney,
have you been drinking? Southland are losing the shield this
(24:05):
Saturday as sure as the sun is coming up tomorrow morning.
I'm not too sure about that. I'm not too sure
about that. I like I said, Funny things happen when
that log of wood is sitting on the sideline, both
for the team who is looking to retain it and
the team who was trying to prize it away. Yesterday
(24:25):
was a great example. Twenty six to eight. On Friday,
the preferred eight football clubs for the inaugural OFC Professional League,
the first ever professional football league in the Oceanny region,
were confirmed by Oceannia Football. The clubs were chosen based
on the recommendations of an independent club licensing committee. Now
these eight clubs have been approved by the OFC Executive Committee,
(24:46):
but they're still subject to the final stages of the
licensing and compliance process before being fully confirmed. Auckland FC
and christ Church United were selected as the two preferred
clubs from New Zealand. The Wellington Phoenix have missed out.
Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome is with us. David,
First of all, had did you learn that you had
(25:08):
missed out?
Speaker 8 (25:10):
Good evening point. We found out.
Speaker 5 (25:12):
I found out on Friday afternoon, around about two to
thirty in the afternoon by email. You share a generic
email from IRFC which basically said that we hadn't been
granted the license and that was it. There wasn't a
phone call, There wasn't anyone ringing up to say that
was how we've done come out of the decision.
Speaker 8 (25:33):
It was just a generic email, which is we missed out.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
So have you been given an explanation In the time since?
Speaker 5 (25:41):
We have made a few requests by phone call, So
I've called. We've seen a number of people that I've
seen a few times to try and get to the
bottom of exactly how the Phoenix missed out.
Speaker 8 (25:53):
It hadn't been forthcoming. So what we've done now was
I've actually gone back to the club.
Speaker 5 (25:57):
Licensing regulations which do dictate our avenues from here, and
there is a couple of articles in there which do
talk to our right to appear from the ten days
of the decision being made, which was last Friday. So
we've taken that and we've asked our lawyers to up
to OURNC for more information and around it. There the
(26:18):
process of awarding those licenses to the pro League that
we've said.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
So, do you intend to appeal the decision?
Speaker 8 (26:25):
Well, that's the plan.
Speaker 5 (26:26):
So the plan now is we have actually written to
them to say we would like more information, and that is.
Speaker 8 (26:30):
Essentially an appeal to get more information. So that's what
we've asked for.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
We will then look to sit down with OFC to
go through it and then ending the results of that
evaluation and information that we've been given either to come
before or after that, we will then take up our
right to be to take it further through a number
of channels, whether that be the Court of Arbitration of
Sport which is also contained in the regulation see pro
(26:58):
Licens probe license, we can go to the CASS if
we wanted to, or through any other channel available to
us in New Zealand where that's a judicial review or
something our So look, we're just keeping the options open
and we're just following the process as is recorded into
the license regulations.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Anyway, in a statement on Friday, you called euromission nonsensical.
Speaker 8 (27:18):
Why so, Well, we've devastated obviously.
Speaker 5 (27:22):
I mean we've been the only pro team in Oceania
since two thousand and seven and in that time, the
Phoenix has done an immense amount into investing.
Speaker 8 (27:30):
More so than any other code that has more.
Speaker 5 (27:34):
There's been more private investment into football than the other
code in New Zealand, right from the academy, through women's
football through to our first and and all of those
structures are now well in place, they are solid. We
are a financially stable club and for us then to
be overlooked at this late stage, and we have stated
(27:54):
from the start, and I've raised it with people in
FIFA and obversely for many years is where is the
pathway for the Wellington phogeux.
Speaker 8 (28:00):
To get things like Champions League in Club World Cup?
Speaker 5 (28:02):
And I've been we've been shifted from pillar to posts
and never said, well, obcly probably is coming.
Speaker 8 (28:08):
That's going to be the channel.
Speaker 5 (28:10):
So after all of this time and all of us
invest in it, and you know, you've been there through
the times and we've had to survive for well Australia
trying to kick us out and we have to survive
COVID and these have been very very tough times at
the club and any one of those junctions we could
have gone under. So then you can't a little bit
lighting in time and say well, look there's actually a
channel here for our the very highest level. To then
be kneecapped at the last minute is with heartbreaking. It's
(28:33):
been heartbreaking for the club. But we know all we're
asking for is the process, what was done. We're not
there is a real lack of transparency as to how
this decision was made. And all we're saying is can
we have some transparency please as to how these decisions
were made? And that's what we've that's and following the
due process which is contained in the regulations.
Speaker 8 (28:52):
We're following that.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
What sort of criteria were you asked to include details
of in your pitch?
Speaker 8 (28:59):
There was.
Speaker 5 (28:59):
It's a list of about thirty to forty criteria which
included everything from the financial basis of the club, set up,
your infrastructure, your facilities, you know, all of the stuff
that we have been doing for many, many years and under.
Speaker 8 (29:12):
Our Asian life, and we've ticked every box.
Speaker 5 (29:16):
And we know from our Asia, from our ac slash
Alien experience that the Phoenix is one of the best
regarded clubs in the Alague with the way it's run financially,
the stability of its owners, the facilities, infrastructure always very
highly regarded and very well accepted within the alag ahead
of many, many, many other clubs of course, and even
during this process, when we went through the process, we
(29:39):
were consistently given feedback that you've ticked that box, and
by fifteenth of July the feedback from the committee that
was running it said you've ticked every box that's required
for your license, which is all done online. So these
documentary all accepted intact. So we were looking at this
and going, okay, nothing more to do.
Speaker 8 (29:58):
We're in a good place here. We think that we've
got all our our facility, our infrastructure.
Speaker 5 (30:03):
We know a second to none the youth development structures
and second and.
Speaker 8 (30:06):
Nine then you know where.
Speaker 5 (30:08):
We feel like we're in a good place to be
able to take the club to the next level.
Speaker 8 (30:11):
And then very surprised to get an email over the blue.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Is it not possible that Auckland FC and christ Church
United just had better bids than you?
Speaker 5 (30:19):
Very much, very possibly, And if that's the case, they're
well done to that. Warrior spoken to Nick Becker, congratulated
him and said, well done. Look, we certainly expected you
guys to be there. Being the other ProTem in New Zealand.
He is very surprised with us, and his expresses, you know,
suppresses you know, I guess slightly suppointment that we're going
over there playing with them in the RC Pro League. Yeah,
(30:39):
I worry Ryley congratulated Nick han't done in christ if
so I haven't got those guys on speed dials as
they had with Nick.
Speaker 8 (30:46):
We really closely on a number of things together.
Speaker 5 (30:48):
And at the end of the day, they've come out
of better proposals than fair play.
Speaker 8 (30:51):
One hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (30:52):
Well done to them and we'll accept that. But the
reality is we don't have any visibility over the maturity matrix,
which is how we were scored against christ Chicks and
Autman and.
Speaker 8 (31:01):
OVA's ability over the process.
Speaker 5 (31:02):
We don't know who's on the committee that made the decision,
and we don't know who since you submitted at our documentation.
Speaker 8 (31:09):
Into security matrix. So there's a lot of unknowns in
that process.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
And it's just you know, again under our right, under
the regulations, we're just exploring those to the best availability.
We feel it's our duty to it's our duty to
the owners, and it's our duty to the fans that
we pursue the slight and need to make sure that
we're doing the best job that we can be doing.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
All right, So just to clarify then, Domie, what you're
after is transparency. You just want to see, for example,
you want to see the scorecard, which presumably you haven't
as you've said you haven't seen it. You just want
to know the scores, basically correct.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
It's like you know, you've gone to a job interview,
you didn't get the job.
Speaker 8 (31:48):
What can we have done better? Why do we not
miss out? What do the other guys do better than us?
Speaker 5 (31:52):
And the next time, as there is next time, how
can we be very prepared the next time we do this?
And it might well been told it's inappropriate to pass
on that information. We're not going to pass on the information,
but hopefully in the next couple of days there will
be a meeting with ORC where we can get to
the bottom of some of the issues.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Some people will say, Domie, this is just you throwing
your toys because you've missed out. What do you say to.
Speaker 5 (32:11):
That, Well, no, we've just been again given them many many,
many millions of dollars that the owners are put into
this club. We're just we just need to do the
right thing by them and explore every possible watch what again,
if we're not doing something right by RSC, we would
like to know that so that we can do something better.
And the reality is that if Auckland and christ you
(32:32):
had better Vincent fair failurem And like I said, what
do you congratulated me? And it makes sense for him
to be there because he's an existing pro club looking
to be a pro club and another competition at the moment,
Like I said, I've spent many hours trying to get
to FISA and OC to say we don't we're the
only club in the world that can't play at Champions
League and the only club that can't play Cup for
(32:52):
the Cup in the world, you know, And so we're
looking at why that there's a level of natural justice
year and again the other clubs have been a fair
flail of them.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
But we just we just ow a.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
Responsibility to the fans, to the owners to out all
our commercial partners, everything around the club that we've built
off over many, many, many years.
Speaker 8 (33:12):
We just feel an obligation to those all those parties
to do the right thing and follow it all the
way through.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
Yeah, And I think most people would say that was
fair enough. So you're expecting some sort of meeting, some
sort of conversation with Oceannia Football this week.
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Yes, we would like to meet with though we see
this week and to discuss it and hopefully get a
bit more transparency around the decision making process and how
we were called.
Speaker 8 (33:36):
Yeah, I mean the reality is there's not much time
to move on there. Look, we've had I've had.
Speaker 5 (33:40):
Another number of conversations that using the football over the
weekend since we found out on Friday and then over
the weekend, and they're very supportive. They're very supportive of
us going and asking for questions and in fact, they'll
probably be there the whole step of the way. They're
just as surprised, I think as anybody else, and that's.
Speaker 8 (33:55):
One hundred percent supporting our requests for more information.
Speaker 5 (33:58):
So we're doing this with New Zealand Football and we're
hopeful that we can get some you know, some good
clarity in the next within the next seven days.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
All right, We'll stay in touch and in hope to
keep updated on it. David, thanks for your time tonight.
I appreciate it very much.
Speaker 8 (34:12):
No problem, saslay No, thank you.
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Dommy David Dome, General manager of the Wellington Phoenix there
with their side of this, so it's transparency transparency. Thereafter
it's it's a look at the criteria. Basically, it's the
reasons why they scored lower than I don't think Auckland
f C. But I think they want to know why
they scored lower than christ Chest United. And look, if
(34:34):
this was a matter of two non professional clubs like
christ Church United, and let's say I don't know Auckland City,
not Auckland f C, but Auckland City getting in, then
I think, you know, that would be a message saying
how we are looking at clubs below the professional level.
We're not considering you Phoenix or your Auckland f C.
But because Auckland f C are and I think Wellington
(34:56):
Phoenix do have the right to ask some questions, to
get some clarity, to ask for transparency. And like David said,
if it turns out that you know, the process was
robust and the other bids were just better, then they'll
shake hands and walk away. But they just want to
know what the scorecard look like, which again I say,
(35:19):
I think is probably fair enough. Seven forty five. Let's
take a break, come back with Pinety's power rankings.
Speaker 9 (35:28):
Our rankings on Monday night we rate the week Piney's
Power rankings the best, the worst and the in between.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
But it's from the sporting weekend. Away we go the
NRL Bunker and the Warriors game on Friday night. All right,
Bunker of you.
Speaker 7 (35:44):
Looking for a knock right in the contest?
Speaker 3 (35:47):
This touch off the meatrick in the contest. It's not
what Warrior's hand over. Here'll play the ball. I'll talk
about that one. Yeah, we will talk about that one.
Glenn Lama. How they've come up with an unequivocal piece
of evidence of a knock on is still still beyond
me Aukland ne f C at night. I can't ever
remember them being the slow down beaten by semi professional
(36:07):
Victorian football club Heidelberg United in the semi finals of
the Australia Cup.
Speaker 10 (36:12):
From seven hundred and twenty clubs which began the Australia
Cup twenty twenty five. One of the finalists. He's a
semi professional side from NPO Victoria. The magic of the
Cup is well and truly alivee.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
See we go to Rugby League's Women's Super League in
the UK York hooker Shanade Peach sent off for allegedly
asking the referee and inappropriate question in their lost to
Saint Helens. He listen to this cut the decision.
Speaker 8 (36:42):
I'm not having sid which showed you're off.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
You cannot ask the ref which one he's shagging. Seven
William Lawson at seven making another enemy. In Formula one's
Dutch Grand Prix. The Racing Balls driver went wheel to
wheel with carloss Signs at a restart, making marginal contact
before overtaking. Carloss signs, not that least about it. He's
just so stupid. Oh my god, this guy is or
(37:11):
was the same guy. Liam Lawson finished twelfth, one spot
ahead of color Signs.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
Six.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
The Canberra Raiders NURL Minor Premiers for the first time

Speaker 3 (40:24):
So that's two straight weeks where the team that's won
the shield has finished up number one. So are we
in a situation where I've got to make Canterbury.
Speaker 12 (40:34):
You can't just keep doing this fining. No, We've got
to draw the line eventually. I can't put Canterbury at
number one. I'll see how that goes down in the three.
Why are riffs always so professional about these things as well?
Speaker 3 (40:48):
Because he just left the.
Speaker 12 (40:51):
