Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello, Dank you, good evening, Welcome and this is Monday
night Sports Talk on News Talks d B for October thirteen.
Happy twenty fifth birthday to White Fern superstar Millie Kerr.
Happy forty third birthday to Olympic champion Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe.
I'm Jason Finchroe producer Andy McDonald. We are talking sport

(00:43):
until eight tonight. How good was that motor racing last night?
Absolutely extraordinary stuff at Mount Panorama, Elite Sporting theater in
the most challenging of conditions and at the end of
one hundred and sixty one laps and one thousand kilometers

(01:03):
of racing, it was a key week on top of
the podium Matt Pain with Supercar's legend Garth Tander Kings
of the Mountain. We're going to relive it tonight with
Eric Thompson from The New Zealand Herald who watched it
all unfold. I'd love your thoughts too on what you
saw play out at the back end of that remarkable,

(01:27):
remarkable race. So Bathhurst to lead off tonight. Also this evening,
the All Black Selectors have named their squad for the
twenty twenty five Grand Slam Tour that kicks off against
Ireland in Chicago in nineteen days from now, then test
matches against Scotland, England and Wales. It is a fairly
settled squad, with a further thirty players to be named

(01:49):
in the All Blacks fifteen touring squad tomorrow. All Black's
assistant coach Scott Hansen is along for a chat tonight.
Your thoughts are welcome to anyone who should be there,
who isn't anyone who shouldn't be there, who is? And
maybe you might have some bolters for the All Blacks fifteen.
As I say, thirty more players are going to be

(02:09):
added to the thirty six that were named today and
the All Black squad. I've had a crack at it
at at the thirty who I think might be in
the mix for the All Blacks fifteen. I think a
few are fairly easy to write down. Others maybe not
quite so much. Some positions we have an embarrassment of
riches and others you kind of scratch around. I think, man,

(02:30):
how are they going to fill those spots up. So yeah,
the All Blacks assistant coach Scott Hansen tonight as we
talk about a rugby and on Monday nights we rate
the weekend of course Pinety's Power rankings, rating the best,
the worst and the in between bits from the sporting weekend.
Please jump aboard the shaft you would like to. You
can do it via phone eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
We'll get you through. That's a free call. Send your

(02:52):
thoughts via text message to nine two niney two or
an email to me Jason at Newstalk SB dot co
dot Nz nine and a half past seven.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
You hear it from the biggest names in sports and men.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Have your say on eight hundred and eighty ten Sports
Talk on your home of Sports News Talks at me.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Twenty three year old can We, Matt Payne and all
time legend Garth Tander have delivered Ford a win for
the Ages in an incident packed rein Hit twenty twenty
five Bathurst one thousands and the victory.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Unbelievable outcome I.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Thought left one next believable races in that history of
this sport. In a race dominated by wet weather and
seven safety car periods, the battle for the Peter Brock
Trophy boiled down to a stunning final run to the
checkered flag. New Zealand Herald motorsport writer Eric Thompson is

(03:57):
with us and watched it all unfold over the last
few days at Mount Panorama. Eric, in your analysis piece
in the Herald today, you right, I don't think there's
an APT one line description for what happened at Mount
Panorama on Sunday. For the first fifty odd laps, it
looked like the Great Race was going to be a
rerun of the twenty twenty four snooze Fest. But nothing

(04:20):
could have been further from the truth. Once the rain came,
the Great Race turned into the greatest ever race. It's
wonderful writing, Et. Thanks for joining us. You've been watching
motorsport for a long long time. Have you ever seen
anything like that?

Speaker 1 (04:39):
No?

Speaker 5 (04:39):
I have not, piny and for the first time ever,
when I get back home, I'm going to skip the
first fifty laps and sit there and watch that race again,
because I swear to the Good Lord I missed it.

Speaker 6 (04:53):
I'm there.

Speaker 5 (04:53):
It was just such an amazing, amazing race, and you know,
like we always look forward to seeing the highlights of
a crash on incident. Well, the highlights were almost becoming
Well did I see that? How did I miss that one?
And I'll tell you a funny story.

Speaker 7 (05:11):
Pointy.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
At one stage, I was bucking for a butthroom break
and I stood up and a gentleman in his next
sitting next to me in the media room said, oh God,
if you go to the toilet, you're going to miss something.
I said, Unfortunately, I might be suffering that old man affliction.
Alle listeners to work that one out. But it literally
was you sit there, it's a busting point before you

(05:34):
legged it off to the bathroom. That's the sort of thing.
And it wasn't just me. There were people in that
room that had been going for many, many years, and
it's the same thing. We were hook line and sinkered
to that race. It was amazing.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Another one of your lines here, I love You're right,
a race full of chaos, carnage and heartbreak. And I
want to get to Ryan Wood and his heartbreak in
just a second. But Matt Pain, how on earth is
that young head on those shoulders being so calm and
the most treacherous of circumstances.

Speaker 5 (06:12):
Ah, can you imagine having Garf Canda in your corner.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yes, well, good point.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
Five years and he was talking to Matt the whole time,
and you know, just as long as the engineers. But
there's one really interesting thinging. At one stage when Goulding
got pinged for that five second penalty, the whole news
room and everybody else is just yelling it, Matt, don't just.

Speaker 8 (06:36):
Let him go.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Just let him go.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
He's got a five second penalty. And afterwards we wanted
if he knew it at the five second penalties and paints.
You know, yeah, I knew about that, but I couldn't
let him go. It's just not me.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
How's that unbelievable? He's such a promising young driver, isn't he.
We've had some some beauties, haven't we Around Mount Panorama.
We think of Greg Murphy, we think of Scotty McLaughlin
and Shane Van Gisberg and many others. What could the
future hold for Matt Pain Having one who said such
an early stage in his career, Oh, it just.

Speaker 5 (07:10):
Sets him up for something quite spectacular. And also, I
know we'll touch on Ryan Wood a little later, but
from a New Zealand Motorsports the Specter, Van gisberg and
McLaughlin owned that Most Australian category and the Mountain for
a couple of years. Well we've got two more on
the wings, I mean, and Assie won it last year

(07:30):
for the first time in about five or six years.
Now we've got two young guns charges right at the
very start of their career. So we're going to own
that place and that championship again.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Timing Ryan Wood, let's talk about Ryan Wood in the heartbreak.
He he may well have won that race et had
his engine not failed him.

Speaker 5 (07:49):
Right, absolutely that that was a pretty much a general consensus.
He was so fast in that right, I mean so
fast and he survived a couple of restarts, so you
know he had you know, he had the you know,
he had command and control of the chain paths Ryan
would did. And that's even it's not more impressive than

(08:11):
Maddie Payne because you know, just potentially Ryan Wood might
have more potential. I remember having a chat with Shane
ben Gisbergen before he went off the NASCAR quite a
few years ago, and Ryan Wood was just in Super
two and I said, you know, where do you think
of the kiwis? You know that that might make an
impact like you did in a championship and without a

(08:34):
split second hesitation, he said, Bryan would, He said, He's
got it naturally gifted. And you know, without a mechanic,
I mean you need man and machine to win that race.
They both have to work in harmony. And unfortunately those
future and durty racing cars, both sides of the garage
just yeah expired, shall we say?

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Then those creatorious conditions at and you had a close
up look at them. We were just watching on television
and once you looked and saw when once you got
the camera side the driver's car, so you're getting an
idea of what they are seeing. And what they are
seeing is is basically nothing. The visibility is so poor
at speeds like that and having to make split second decisions,

(09:19):
split second you know, movements of the car, tiny little metronomic,
you know, moves of the steering wheel. How on earth
do those guys keep their call and keep control of
their cars?

Speaker 5 (09:33):
Well, first of all, it makes for me one look
like a scale electrics things that you rationing your garage.
They would have shut that down and send everybody home,
but not the super And you're right when the folk
came down across the top of the mountain skyline and
diving down into the dipper. I think Davy Reynolds put
it precisely. Said I was just hanging on in there.
I had no idea where the car was. And he said,

(09:57):
all you're concentrating on is a flashing red light in
front of you. He said he couldn't see a thing.
So and they're doing that at two hundred and sixty seven,
you know, to seventy kilimeters an hour across the top.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
It's hard enough on the motorway. It's hard enough on
the motorway et when you're doing about seventy just trying
to keep you try, just trying to get home, mate,
trying to get home.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
And also Matty Payne was saying they were they had
to remember where the rivers of water were coming across
the track to try and avoid them. And Lee Holds
were the Baily Reynolds go driver said, ah, he said,
I just wanted to pack up and go home. He said,
I've had a quote. He said, I've had enough of
this place.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
We spoke yesterday on the radio and I asked whether
Matt Paine was a chance from eighteenth and you said
something along the lines of anything as possible. I think
didn't yesterday just prove that in this race in particular,
anything is possible.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Absolutely.

Speaker 9 (10:55):
I mean we go back I think about eight or
nine years when Paul Gombrel and Chas Mostt won some
last place on the grid and that that was weather.

Speaker 5 (11:06):
Impact race at all anywhere on that grid and the
drivers will know it. You cannot rule a single pairing
out of that race. And that's why one to me
is why it's called suck. Great race and we happen
to see and I'll stand by that in any court
of motorsport Twitter verse that that was the best race

(11:28):
that Mount Panorama has ever put on.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
You will not get an argument from me. Et. Thank
you so much for your contributions on the radio over
the weekend. You're wonderful writing, which I've just absolutely loved. Look,
you probably need to take a breath, mate, come back,
you know, skip the first fifty lapses, you say, watch
the rest and then watch it again. It's a race
for the ages, mate, Thanks as always for joining us
on ZB.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Mate, and I also appreciated the opportunity to chat to
your pinty.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
It's been a pleasure It's been great having you on
ET travel safe mate. That's Eric Thompson from the New
Zealand Herald. Read him at NZ Herald dot co dot NZ.
Some terrific in race analysis and then his analysis p
at the end of it all. It's it's really really
good stuff nziherld dot cot on NZ. Great to have
Eric Thompson along tonight nineteen past seven. Can you hear

(12:15):
your thoughts and your reaction to that race last night,
regardless of where along the scale you are, whether you're
a motorsport aficionado or whether you just got drawn into
it last night because of the absolute drama that was unfolding.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty as our number.

(12:37):
Oh look, I'm certainly not the world's biggest motor racing fan.
Motorsport is far more the domain of my colleague Darcy
Watergrave here at zid B. But I know sporting theater
when I see it, and that's what this was. I
was just glued to the couch. It was, without a doubt,

(13:00):
the most enthralling sport I reckon I've watched this year.
Compelling viewing on four wheels at extreme speed in some
of the most treacherous conditions. You could possibly imagine those
drivers putting all their faith in their skills and probably
more so in the car that they were in charge of.

(13:21):
And as they went charging down Conrod straight side by side,
at over two hundred and forty clicks, it was just
heart stopping. I was holding my breath watching those guys
drive those cars. The unwavering courage you must need to
even hold your nerve in situations like that, to trust

(13:41):
yourself to break at the very last split second, to
wring everything out of your machinery and to trust that
it'll follow your instructions and start a road which is
absolutely drenched. And when Matt Paine did leave the track
and drop down to third, his chance for Bathos's glory

(14:02):
looked over, didn't it. Cooper Murray took the lead James
Golding slid into set and even so I thought at
that stage, from eighteenth on the grid up to third
was a pretty decent day's work for Matt pain. But
when James Golding fired down the inside at Griffin's Bend
on lap one five six of one sixty one and

(14:22):
sent Cooper Murray towards the barriers, Matt Payne took the lead,
Golding slotted into second, Murray dropped down to fourth behind
David Reynolds, and then Golding was hit with that five
second penalties even though he crossed the line first. The
victory went to Matt pain. It was just incredible drama
and at the end of it all another key we
win it. It is a very exclusive and illustrious list that

(14:47):
Matt Payne joins Jim Richards seven victories at Bathurst, his
son Stephen Richards, five, Greg Murphy, who we spoke to
on the radio on Saturday, a four time winner, Scott
McLaughlin King of the Mountain in twenty nineteen. Then Shane
van Gisbergen won it three times in four years twenty twenty,
twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three, and fellow key

(15:10):
with Richie stand Away was also on board in twenty
twenty three. So that means we've now had a KIWI
in the winning car in six of the last eight
years twenty eighteen, Stephen Richards, twenty nineteen, Scott McLaughlin twenty twenty,
twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three, Shane van Gisbergen

(15:30):
Richie stand Away with him in twenty twenty three and
their Matt Paine this year incredible. The Aussies must be
wondering what they have to do to get some form
of domination back. And what might Matt Payne do now
that he's won at once? I mean Scott McLoughlin won
at once and then he went off to Indycarten and

(15:52):
Shane van Gisbergen has three once he's off to NASCAR.
Now Matt Pain's only just getting going.

Speaker 7 (15:56):
What is he?

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Twenty three? The other guy's Ryan would Ryan Wood would
have run, that would have won that race. And he
was utterly distraught. Wasn't he utterly distraught when his engine
failed him? And there's nothing you can do with those situations,
is there? It would almost be easier if you knew

(16:19):
you'd made a mistake, if the reason you hadn't one
was you. But it was his car, Ryan Wood's car.
Nick says pinety first time in twenty five plus years,
I didn't watch the great race?

Speaker 7 (16:30):
Man?

Speaker 2 (16:30):
Am I regretting it?

Speaker 5 (16:31):
Nick?

Speaker 2 (16:32):
What were you doing? What were you doing? So piney?
Kudos also to Kyle Allen. His car got bashed three times,
he still finished top ten. That was the thing too.
Wasn't he that? The must say, the broadcast coverage is
just utterly world class. How on earth they pulled that

(16:53):
all together? Just the different streams of of what, you know,
what we're seeing, and then they have picture and picture,
doren't they? And often they cut the screen up into
two or three different parts, so you watch three or
four different different things at times. You know, the crew
back in the workshop, you get a driver's view, you

(17:13):
get the overall view. Then you've got the graphics down
the side that tell you who's where and by how
much and when they started on the grid and how
much they've made up in terms of grid position. And
then the audio, you hear the different audio from the drivers,
from those talking to the drivers, and then the commentary,

(17:34):
My goodness, the commentary utterly extraordinary. Over seven you know,
up to seven hours and it's still at the end
sounded fresh and energetic, and they were able to explain
stuff that you would never know unless you'd been one
of those cars, like I was watching. I was just
watching these cars go fast. But to have the commentators

(17:56):
explain just tiny little details about what they were seeing
from their own experiences just added so much to it.
So yeah, just tremendous us all round seven twenty five.
What did you make of it all? And what might
Matt Paine do now? Might he be the next? And
what has been a long line of supercars stars from

(18:20):
New Zealand OH eight hundred and eighty ten eighty nine
two nine two for year text messages seven twenty five.
Here at Newstalk ZB We're back in a moment.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
The great call is.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Your call on OH eight hundred and eighty ten eighty
Sports Talk All on your home of sports news Talk ZIB.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
Seven twenty eight. Scott Hanson, assistant coach of the All Black,
standing by the chat to us in just a moment,
just a few messages through on the motorsport Matt Painter
has earned himself a dB says changing I think you're
probably right, Jake. Did you see Chaz Moster when he
came off when his race was prematurely ended and jumped
out of his car, jumped over the fence, up into
the crowd and got a beer? Quite like that? Very

(18:59):
Australian outstanding commentary. Love the motorsport coverage. Our Kiwis are
absolute rock stars, some of the best race drivers for
deca but through here as well. Australia is blessed with
some superb broadcasters, but as a duo, Neil Crompton and
Mark Scaife are the very best. Anyone can watch and
be captivated. They are outstanding. Yeah, I totally agree. The

(19:19):
coverage commentary TV Product says, this one actually blows my mind.
It's ridiculous how that production crew can manage to craft
all of that amongst the chaos. Plus Scafe and Crompton
are legit so good they are quite possibly the best
batheist ever says this one. And yes, the coverage, especially
when the rain came, was next level. Some of the
technical pieces were among the best I've ever seen in

(19:40):
motorsport coverage. Another one here during the race, I marveled
at the commentary, so many hours and still fresh and
formative and enthusiastic to the ends, more action than a
whole Formula One season, says this, But and I'm not
really a Supercars fan. Edge of the Seat Pinty one
of the best races ever. The coverage was not world
class is this one. It was world beating, from the

(20:02):
technical breakdowns to the emotion keeping an insane number of
plates spinning perfectly. That is a very very good way
of putting it. Thanks for all you your calls and
your feedback on the supercars to rugb. The All Black
Selectors have named their squad for the twenty twenty five
Grand Slam Tour, which kicks off with the Gallicher Gallagher Cup,

(20:24):
the rematch that's against Ireland in Chicago, followed by matches
against Scotland, England and Wales hook at. George Bell is
the only new inclusion who wasn't involved in the Rugby Championship,
while prop Tavita Muffalo is the only uncapped member of
the squad. All Black's assistant coach Scott Hansen is with
us on sports Talks God, thanks for taking the time tonight.

(20:46):
Were there many or any challenging conversations to be had
when you selected the squad for the Northern Tour?

Speaker 4 (20:54):
I think this should be and there always is so
as All Back Selectors, we do have some challenging conversations
around where we feel the squads at in person now
and that was always the case and that was the
case in this instance also, so.

Speaker 7 (21:13):
Good conversations over.

Speaker 4 (21:14):
It's really happy with the squad, excited for the boys,
a good cohesion experience through the group and looking forward
to getting into the Irish in Chicago.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
How did you marry up naming this squad and also
the All Blacks fifteen squad which is going to be
unveiled tomorrow.

Speaker 7 (21:33):
Yeah, yeah, good question.

Speaker 4 (21:34):
I think it's closely linked to the ability to have
a team up there. Also playing was key. We know
there will be a number of boys playing in the
All Blacks fifteen close.

Speaker 7 (21:43):
To the All Blacks. What we did well last year
is have the.

Speaker 4 (21:47):
Dup Seed, Carevis and the Fabian Hollins involved there being
in Europe also they're a flight away, so within the
selection process for us having players playing and the All
Blacks fifteen is important also and they'll be essentially the
first point of call if we do go through any injuries.

Speaker 7 (22:06):
So it's also reward for the.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
Players that have come through Super and the most recent
NPC which is currently still going, so they've been rewarded
through form through that also, so excited for the group.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
Also, how do you find that balance, Scott? You know,
you look at a player and you think, okay, is
he better being attached to the All Blacks with us
our thirty six or is he better in the All
Blacks fifteen, maybe getting more game time. How do you
strike strike that balance when you're talking about specific players.

Speaker 4 (22:36):
Yeah, yeah, I think game time is key at the
end of the day, the All Blacks, it's not a
development team, so you're up there. We understand the challenges
they are in front of us. It's a great opportunity
with the All Blacks fifteen. And I had some great
memories there myself involved in that coaching wise a number
of years ago.

Speaker 7 (22:54):
So it's definitely an.

Speaker 4 (22:55):
Environment that allows players to come in, fill the touring atmosphere,
get in and connect, feel some expectations around what the
Black Jersey does. A good coaching staff with experience there
that'll be helping. We'll be closely aligned to them. So
when you look at playing time and there the guys

(23:17):
like Cole precedent and that you want to continue the
playing time for them. You want to see them in
different environments. You want to see our boys facing example,
the English and the likes. So a massive opportunity for them.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
So that's the reason why Kyle is perhaps, I mean,
let's you know, I think we can all probably predict
he'll be part of the team name tomorrow. Fin Like
Christy comes with you in the All Blacks thirty six.
That was just a decision really based around wanting to
give Kyle a few more minutes which he may not
have got with the All Blacks.

Speaker 4 (23:52):
Oh well, again for us, you know Philly Christy and
what he's done, the experience that he gives the group
going into Europe, the conditions that will have up there massive.
But the benefit is having this All Blacks fifteen close
to us, and that's going to allow the cole Prestons
and the like to continue to play up there, continue
to be challenged around.

Speaker 7 (24:12):
What the game looks like.

Speaker 4 (24:13):
So we're really happy obviously with the All Black squad,
just as excited by the All Backs fifteen and the
potential that's in that group.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
Also, sever Reese Scott, he perhaps had fallen out of
favor a little bit in terms of his opportunities with
the All Blacks, and recent times there was a school
of Thorpe that perhaps you might have moved on from
sever rece Can you talk about his selection?

Speaker 4 (24:36):
I will sevu for us, there's really so firstly, Jasic
acknowledging the competition that's there at the moment you're looking
at the wingers and in the performances we've had most
recently around it, and they're inform You look at Lester's
performance most recently, you look at Carter around how he's
continuing to grow his game as an All Black winger.

Speaker 7 (24:57):
You've got Caleb that's coming back from injury.

Speaker 4 (24:59):
So we do have a number of wingers currently putting
their hand up. We've still got versatility in our squad,
which we know, and Sevu is an experienced All Black.
He knows what it takes to travel through Europe and
the like some challenges in front of us. Sevez, there
is all the boys around getting that starting role. We

(25:20):
know that it'll work hard for it. But that's what
the All Black environment should be doing. It should be
creating competition. It should be hard to get into the
starting fifteen. And for Sev, he's got some feedback around
where he can grow his game, what we need from
him around our preparation week to help us prepare also
as a twenty three and there'll be a big opportunity

(25:42):
for Sev to put his hand up on this tour
all right.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
And in about seven weeks or so, once you've played
Wales at Cardiff to finish the year obviously, Ireland, Scotland, England,
Wales to finish. What sort of things would need to
have happened Scott in the in the next four matches
for you to be relatively satisfied with twenty twenty five
or indeed very satisfied with twenty twenty five.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
Yeah, I think it's a I think it's continued uation
of the growth in our game.

Speaker 7 (26:08):
It's our I believe it always.

Speaker 4 (26:09):
We're just during it and we've had some challenges this year,
most recently around one or two performances, but ultimately for us,
it's continued to grow our game. It's growing out set piece,
the quality position that we provide. It's having balance in
our game around our defense in an attack, and ultimately

(26:30):
you want this group to be reaching its potential and
when we do that, what that looks like is a
balanced game.

Speaker 7 (26:37):
It's applying preciate at the right end of the field.

Speaker 4 (26:40):
We've had a good review of the most recent competition
around where we can get some learnings and fundamentally for
us around that is a controlling possision.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
Scott, thanks for your time tonight, all the best on
your travels. Look forward to catching up during the Northern Tour.

Speaker 7 (26:55):
Thanks Jase, I appreciate your time. Nice to talk to
you today.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
Nice to talk to you too, Scott. Thanks indeed, Scott Hanson.
That's us to go to the All Blacks. That's pretty
much the same team, isn't it. It's the Rugby Championship
squad worth just a couple of tweaks, most of them
injury enforced, so Brady McAllister drops out and George Bell
comes in as the third hooker. Brady McAllister will be

(27:19):
named in the All Blacks fifteen tomorrow, no doubt, along
with a couple of other hookers, and you'd have to
imagine would be the first one they'd call up if
one of Cody Taylor, Summersauni Tokyahu or George Bell was
to go down during this tour. That's the benefit, as
Scott Hansen just said, of having the All Blacks fifteen
playing up in the Northern Hemisphere as well. They's just

(27:40):
a flight away, aren't they. It's not difficult to get
from wherever they are to wherever the All Blacks are.
So that All Blacks fifteen is named tomorrow, thirty more players.
I was actually just having a bit of a look
at who might be in that All Blacks fifteen squad,
because you are starting to go quite deep there and
there will be the opportunity for some if you want

(28:03):
to call them, bolters tomorrow. And Scott Robertson today even
addressed that, were they tempted the All Blacks to pick
some bolters in their squad?

Speaker 6 (28:17):
Ah, yeah, these are a few bolters that will come up
tomorrow in the AB's fifteen. And if you look at
the entirety of the squad, you know, we've had nineteen
debutantes in the last two years, and we've got a
few players that have been there and competing for positions.
So it's in a great spot. We've got experience, we've
got youth, We've got a team that you know, he's
to be really balanced and experienced when Green slams. That's

(28:38):
what history shows.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
So that's Scott Robertson's view. So, like I say, he's
stuck with the Rugby Championship squad. Nobody has played their
way out of that squad, with the exception of Brodie Mcalliston,
and I'm not saying he has either. He probably will
just get more benefit from being on the All Blacks
fifteen tour where he will get some games. Samoa incidentally

(29:02):
wasn't considered due to injury, so that's the reason he's
not there. He's had a fairly unlucky season a safe
More in terms of some injuries he's picked up and
also a couple of concussions. So a safe More won't
be in the All Blacks fifteen squad tomorrow either. So
if you're looking at hookers, Will Brody McAllister, we know

(29:22):
we'll be one of them. I reckon Yoanni Muannu out
of the Crusaders might get a crack. Bradley Slater would
be another one. Other positions half back will Kyle Prest
and we know we'll be there. I think Dylan Pleedger
has probably at least put himself in the conversation, hasn't he.

(29:43):
I mean he's never played super rugby, Dylan Pledger, but
everything we've seen from him at Otago is very very
high catching. He might get he might get a call up.
I think Xavier Row will probably be in the mix
as well, given the fact that when we had that
half back crisis that we did when we didn't have
Roy guard Orma or Hotham, when Finlay Christie came in

(30:08):
with Kyle Preston. The next guy was Xavier Row. He
was called into the to the widest sort of training
of the wider training group, so I think he probably
is in the Q first five will be interesting. I
think surely Josh Jacob will get a go when he
and maybe Rivers Rayhanna might be the other one. Anybody
you think should be there, call it through, text it through,

(30:30):
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty ninety two ninety
two for your text messages. Is a bit of a
shortage of front rowers for me, Tyrel Lomax and Olie
Norris from the Rugby Championship squad unavailable through injury or
for talking. The Fussy of course hasn't played all year
because of his injury, so that's why Tavita Mafalo has

(30:52):
got the call up, joining Ethan de group to Mighty Williams,
George Bauer, Fletcher Null and Pasilio TOSSI you need those
six front rowers, don't you. They'll probably take five with
the All Blacks fifteen. I think Josh Fuss to tour
has to be a chance. He was talked about in

(31:14):
All Blacks terms after his Super Rugby season with the Blues.
Xavier nu Mia is another one out of the Hurricanes.
He was very close last year before he pulled a
calf muscle late in the Super Rugby season which put
paid to his chances of selection, and he had another
pretty solid Super Rugby season. Say Xavier Numea, perhaps they

(31:35):
might go back to Angus Tavo for a bit of experience.
He's been in All Black a long time. All Black
still played pretty much every game for the Blues. Maybe
George Dyer out of the Chiefs as well. And if
we're looking for other bolters, I think if you were
picking on form, you'd probably put a couple of guys
out of the Otago team in there. I think he'd

(31:56):
probably have Cam Miller in there. He's a fairly solid
first five and a very good goalkicker. And I wonder
whether you might look at Lucas Casey as well, although
again we're talking about guys who have been good at
the MPC level, very good at MPC level, But I
never played any super rak well. Cam Miller has, but
Lucas Casey and Dylan Pledger haven't, So it might be
a bit of a long bow to think about them

(32:17):
as All Blacks fifteen members when they haven't even played
Super rugby loose forwards. I think Tom Papa, you might
get a call up for the All Blacks fifteen. Devin
Flanders is another one who's playing very well and has
been talked about. Christian Leo will He of course played
earlier this year for the All Blacks. He might be there.
I think Todd not Todd black Head, he's not playing anymore.

(32:39):
Ethan Blackadder may well be injured a thumb injury, I believe.
In Hoskins Setuta is the other one. He didn't play
yesterday for Counties, so I wonder whether he's carrying an
injury as well, or whether they've just completely moved on
from Hoskins Satuto. I'm not sure. Colin Grace might be
in that mix as well. Finlay Christie Razor was asked
why Finlay Christie, Why when they know all about him

(33:04):
and some reports have him leaving New Zealand Rugby after
the season. Why take Finn Lake Christy as your third
half back?

Speaker 6 (33:11):
Yeah? I think it's a balance of the group. You know,
we've heard a few injuries obviously through the year and
we've given guys one or two Test matches, and that's
why AABES fifteen's there, so they can play and play
North and they're available for it to come over. The
thing that fin is a test level is test ready.
He'll come in if against an armoryesult.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
Ruben Love hasn't really had an opportunity to play at
first five this year, even though he was selected as
a first five full back utility if we can call
it that. So will Ruben Love get an opportunity on
the Northern Tour to play in the ten Jersey for
the All Blacks or even spend some time at first five?

Speaker 6 (33:44):
Yeah, Look, he trains a lot there with us. We'd
sort of planned at the back end of the protesting
in a few minutes just the way it worked us
with injuries where it wasn't the test. But look, he's
more than capable wolf we see how he was this
year is super rugby and he's definitely an option. That's
what we named him as a first five fallback.

Speaker 2 (34:02):
And is there any pressure on Razer going into the
back end of the year to win all four Test
matches and to complete the Grand Slam.

Speaker 6 (34:10):
Pressure that's part of the job. I think you just
got to use that as a fuel to excite you.
You go away north and it's not often you get
to have these opportunities. So this one we're looking forward
to taking and getting sighted as a group. And like
I said, it's a different style. Just come off some
incredibly testing test matches. Even now you know we'd rugby's
at a position where it's the toughest and Titus has

(34:31):
ever been. So it's another opportunity to show the way
we play in our DNA.

Speaker 2 (34:35):
That's the voice of Scott Robertson of course. So four
test matches to come. The first these are all Sunday
mornings here in New Zealand, Sunday November two, nine o'clock
against Ireland in Chicago and then ten past four kickoffs
on the following three Sundays Sunday November nine against Scotland,
November sixteen against England and November twenty third against Wales.

(34:57):
So four Sunday morning test matches coming up for us
back here to enjoy. All of them will be live
on News talks 'b coming up quarter to eight. We'll
take break, come back and rate the weekend. Piney's Power
rankings coming up after this day. Our rankings lay Monday

(35:17):
nights when we rate the weekend Piney's Power rankings the best,
the worst and the in between. Bits from our sporting weekend.
Let's go. The Breakers are back down at ten, a
fifth loss from six games, and basketball's a NVL. Bernango's
going to have to throw it up. Using a little
bit too much time here, you imagine if they want
to stay alive. To Raggie cart and John Brown, we'll

(35:40):
come up with a rebound, a big win for Southeast
Melbourne after a lot of time on the pine. In
eighty seven eighty one home defeat for the Breakers to
Southeast Melbourne, they blew a forty six thirty four halftime lead.

Speaker 8 (35:52):
Shine.

Speaker 2 (35:53):
The All Whites are at nine and noble effort but
a narrow one nil loss to Poland. It's a lovely
turner drive and it's the opening goal Peter Zelenski. The
All Whites have the chance to make amends when they
meet Norway on Wednesday morning. Chairs most is at eight,
forced to retire for the first time ever at the

(36:16):
Bath First one thousand due to engine failure, but he
spent little time dwelling on his misfortune. Look at Chairs
he's having the day of his life up there. Cows stopped.
He's having a ripping after the dull summer, the paint.

Speaker 8 (36:29):
Someone's come along with a hamburger or sausage, right, I said,
all right with.

Speaker 1 (36:32):
That, I'll just have a quite beer of Biggs.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
Great moment, chairs most jumping out of his car over
the fence and accepting the offer of a beer from
one of the punters. Seven Valentine Vera Chiro becoming the
lowest ranked player ever to win a top level atp
tennis tournaments match the Valencine. It's the icing of the

(36:59):
cake to a fairy tale week at Shanghai. He is
the world number two hundred and four from Monaco, beating
his French cousin Arthur Rinderknesh in three sets in the
final at the Shanghai Masters six six, the one hundred
and thirty sixth ranked Pharaoh Islands stunning the visiting thirty

(37:21):
ninth ranked Czech Republic two to one to keep alive
their World Cup football qualification hopes on by.

Speaker 8 (37:27):
Treadid expert and they said, this is the chance of incales.

Speaker 2 (37:32):
Are they cook it again? They are in again. The
two to one win marks the Pharaoh's third in a row.
A population of just fifty five thousand, they would be
the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup
if they get there. Five into the top half, where
we find the White Ferns finally were the one on
a board at the Cricket World Cup.

Speaker 1 (37:51):
I'll beat this time. She's gone big.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
It's up well called a game.

Speaker 6 (37:55):
Plymmer in New Zealand have dismissed Bangladesh for one hundred
and twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
A one hundred run victory over Bangladesh at Guhawati. The
White Ferns next face Sri Lanka tomorrow night. Sure Cam
Miller is at four, kicking a long range penalty after
the hooter to give his Otago side a forty four
forty one victory over White Cuttle in their NPC quarter
final on Friday night. I'm about forty nine meters out

(38:24):
right foot round mccorner, keck up towards the post.

Speaker 7 (38:27):
That is.

Speaker 4 (38:30):
Over.

Speaker 2 (38:31):
Game over semis next week, Yes they are. They host
Bay of Plenty in Friday night's first NPC semifinal three.
Hannah Bury is at three fourth at the iron Man
World Championships in Hawaii Hannah Berry gets to the finish
line in fourth place. Hannah has just been consistent and

(38:52):
I know that word is overused a lot these days,
and we've seen that.

Speaker 8 (38:55):
Oh yeah, and now she's come forth at the o
Man World Championships.

Speaker 2 (38:59):
That result is the best by a Kiwi woman for
over three decades. Sammy Maxwell's at two, the first New
Zealander to clinch a UCI Mountain BikeE world title in
any discipline after winning the women's cross country What are
movements to.

Speaker 8 (39:16):
Samara Maxwell under carpool four? This is what sport is
all about it, this is what brings us back to
this cruel clerk in every time.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
Samara Maxwell as the UCI Class.

Speaker 8 (39:31):
Country an Olympic World Tops.

Speaker 2 (39:34):
Overall title with a second placing at the season ending
Cross Country World Series event in Quebec. Seeing Sammy Maxwell
clinch this year is title, but she hasn't been able
to become number one. That is twenty twenty five Bathurst
one thousand Champion Keyweek, Matt Payne and the contry. I

(40:02):
unbelievable outcome.

Speaker 8 (40:06):
I had one next believable races in that history of
this sport.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
I thought about Sammy max Well at number one it's
pretty cool what she did. It is pretty cool, funny.
Hang on, I can I can work this in though
it's a pretty barroh fetched result, wasn't it? Oh my god,
barrow from belief. Oh my god, you better check the
