Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be we'll join now on sports Talk by Hayden Padden.
Our man skidding over in Europe, looking to back up
last year's outrageous European Rally Championship with one on the bounce. Close,
but it's not sealed yet, Hayden, Welcome to the program.
She's been an r us for you and John Kennard,
(00:31):
but you're sitting in a good position heading into the
last two rallies of the year.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Thinks it's it's certainly been quite a different yet last year,
I guess. Last year, you know, we had a string
of consistent results and podiums and put ourselves in a
strong place for it from the stuff year. But this
year we're certainly having our challenges and setbacks, and lets
us say, it's been a mentally pre challenging season. But
like you say, we're in a position where we can
(00:58):
try and win it over the next too, so we've
got to try and make that count.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
It must be challenging if you're not basically driving the
pants off everybody else with the you've got, but you're
actually got to really work. For any points that you get,
there's got to be some satisfaction and that surely, Oh
I used to know.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I'm a competitive person, so I'd like to be winning,
you know. This year, you know, it's clear that everyone's
made a big step up in terms of you know,
their own performances and the car development and whatnot. And
and you know, through no fault of anyone, we've sort
of got the same package. That's just what we've got
from from the factory. So we're trying to make do
with something that's you know, you know, a little bit slower,
(01:37):
shall we say, But you know, John and I love
that challenge. You know, I guess odd do a little
bit sat against us here in Europe. So you know,
we're trying to raise the rise of the occasion and
dig a little bit deeper. And you know, we're certainly
driving harder than we ever have before and and you know,
just trying to basically click the points that we can
and obviously there's been a few little problems along the way,
(01:57):
but we're still taking along.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
So is there a trick around this when you go
into a rally about how you actually managed to pick
up points to eke through them. Is there a method
that you use to talk us through about how you
approach each rally each stage.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Yeah, Basically we go into every rally this year knowing
that we have to drive one hundred and ten percent
to try and even keep up. So yeah, on the gravel,
you know, the package we got can still be competitive,
but on tarmac we are definitely lacking performance. So it
does mean we're going to a rally with a mindset
knowing that we you know, the possibilities to win is
(02:31):
probably pretty hard unless a few things go our way,
So it's more about minimizing the damage, making sure we're
picking up strong points, and basically the focus goes from
trying to win the rally necessarily to making sure that
we're competitive for our main championship rivals, because with every
rally we have the fast locals who are always changing
on each rally, so the people who are winning each
(02:53):
rally are not necessarily your main championship rival. So yeah,
the focus does switch rally.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
The rally very difficult from a driver's point of view,
knowing that you've really got to keep it on the road,
You've got to collect points, so that must attract slightly
from your ability to skid to throw the car around,
because it's always in the back of your mind that
you can't have a DNA if you've got to keep
it out of the weeds. Do you have that issue
when you're driving, Hate.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I think the pressure is off when you know we're
able to win the championship last year, so I mean,
like we've done it now, so it's not like there's
that extra pressure of trying to do something for the
first time. So you sort of lower the shoulders a
little bit based on that and just go out and
do the best we can. And yeah, at the end
of the day, the position we're in, we just have
to drive one hundred and ten percent is now holding
(03:38):
back and you know we're probably taking more risks than
what we have done in the past, But you know,
there's an element of enjoying that and if we didn't
actually look at the times and the results and would
probably be having a lot more fun. But when you
get to end of rallies and we're finishing fifth or six,
and that takes a little bit of the gloss of
a little bit of the gloss off it.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
So Hate Padden joins us he's campaigning Hunde over at
the European Rally Championship, defending his title from last year.
Two rounds to go, have you done the mat? You've
got Franceski behind you by fourteen points. I'm presuming he
can catch up and pass. But what has to happen?
Do you even do those maths?
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Not so much. It's probably too early for that because
the gaps is still too small. Basically our next running
Wales next week. You know, we need to try and
lift our game. We need to get a good result
under a belt, regardless of the championship. So it's a
rally that's new for everybody. It's a really that maybe
suits us a little bit better compared to the previous
couple that we've done. So we're just going there next
(04:40):
week with the mindset we're going all out, you know,
forget about the championship for the weekend and just drive
as fast as we can and see if we can
get on the podium.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
And does it suit you? You've campaigned in Wales before,
do you know the lie the land there? Playing the
stages are presuming they're going to be different from when
you last were there a couple of years back. But
how does it treat you how well do you perform
in Wales.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Yeah, we did rally two years ago when it was
a non championship event which we're able to win, so
you know, we got some happy memories there shall we say.
But it's very different to the Wales Rally that we
used to do back in the w C. You know,
Wales was always famous for you know, the gravel stages
and the forest and the fog and the rain and
everything that you normally get to Wales, whereas now the
new version of the rally is actually a tarmac rally,
(05:22):
so that's on very narrow lanes often still wet. That
part hasn't changed. But yeah, it's an event that we've
got a lot of good, happy memories of and I
guess it puts in a more positive mindset before you
get there.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I believe that when you're running around the tarmac earlier
well last weekend, that you did have a puncture issue
at some stage. That's probably something you just had to
deal with a rally drive. Excuse the part of that's
kind of the flated, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Yeah, this was a little bit annoying, like it is
part of the game unfortunately. Yeah, we've had. We've had
a couple this year, but yeah, it's the first time
we've had to stop in a stage and actually change
it for quite a while. So yeah, we lost quite
a lot of time on the weekend, but it was
a matter of about keeping our head on her shoulders
and we fell out of the points and dropped the
long way back, but it was about trying to climb
(06:09):
back as much as we could and limit the damage.
And you know, the second day was much better for us,
and we're able to do that.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
And the response from the fans around Europe as you
move around, they give you the time of day, they've
got respect for what you're doing. And I know what
really fans are like. They just love watching people scared.
But they're a friendly bunch in the Europeans.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
Oh usually. You know, That's what I love about the
European Rally Championship is that, you know, some of the
countries we go to, particularly you know, countries like Italy
and Cheat Republic rallians massive for them, and the passion
and just the shared number of people out watching and
supporting is always immense. And the people over here, they
just appreciate people turning up to the rallies and putting
(06:49):
on a show for them, and it doesn't matter whether
you're at the front or the back of the field,
so you know, it's always pretty humbling to be part
of that sort of atmosphere and events and have them
appreciate you.
