Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave may be a diehard Crusaders fan, but thankfully he's also a believer in journalistic integrity.

So he made sure to also go to the camp of the Blues ahead of their Super Rugby semifinal in Christchurch.

Blues assistant coach Paul Tito spoke to D'Arcy on the show.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the sports Talk podcast with Duncie Wildergrave
from News Talk zedb coud you taking.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Me sports talk on news Talks EB. We've had a
listener to the Crusaders. I musted up a blue for
us as well as the coach of the Blues. He
looks after the Fords, is not really interested in those
fancy pants. Is out back. His name is Paul Tito
and he joins us now, good evening, Paul Ivan. Hell you,
I'm very well. What a game Friday? I always talk

(00:37):
about this, I talk about this last week with the
challenge between the Chiefs and the Blues. It just notches
up a level, doesn't it. Down to Crusadersville in their
backyard in the freezing cold against a traditional rival, you're
either freaking out or rubbing your hands together. Game. This
is what rugby is all about.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
You know, we're excited, you know, obviously looking back last week,
it was a massive challenge. Not many people gave us
a show, sneaking into sixth and heading down to number
one in Hamilton and and doing the job lake down there.
You know, no one really gave us a show, and
I'm picking most will give us no show on Cross Each.

(01:16):
You know what I've seen here this week is you know,
excitement and energy levels are high and really really really
excited about heading to Cross Each to really challenge them
down in their home TEF, what do you.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Need to reapply from the chiefs game because that was
a huge turner. People moaned about the way the quarter
finals were working and how it panned out, but thanks
to you guys, it made it very, very exciting. So
the big takeaways out of that time in.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Chiefsville, Well, I think the first thing is I don't
know if the Hurricanes were too excited about that result,
but you know what I mean, I think looking back
at our game, I felt out defense really controlled the game.
We had moments when we went down there a few
months ago that we leak points. When they got into
our twenty two was a massive focus from every one

(02:06):
all week, and you know, their first three entries they
took the I think they only took three points, so
I think that was a real step up. You know,
our defense obviously has been going pretty good all year
with the least amount of try scored, but you know,
most of you haven't been that good in other areas
and haven't haven't been as one, you know, and you

(02:27):
and then you look at your defensive line out and
then you look at your scrum and little things like
that that can help the defense numbers. So yeah, I
felt that we were better connected as one.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
What's been the major change to help that defensive effort
has been a major tweak and attitude? What have you
looked at around that?

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Well, you know, the defense doesn't change much. You know,
you look at the key things that that they bring,
and you might tweak a few things, but it comes
down to the players and the senior guys that run
out of defense and and how much you want it,
how much you want to how much time you want
to see them to spin on the ground, or how
much time you want to get up on your feet
and have that real next job focused. So you know,
it comes back down to attitude and how much you

(03:10):
wanted and you know some then the coaches box and
the weekend, it wasn't the most pleasantest place, but see
the boys getting up again and working hard for each
other was great to see trust.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
As well when you're insides in your outsides knowing that
these guys are going to complete, not seekond guessing what
happens next.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, I think you know all that stuff cohesion with
playing with the guys that you've played with a long time.
All these little things helpen. You know, we've got a
pretty experience back line that dealt with things really well
last weekend, and this weekend is going to be a total,
totally different story. They play a different brand. You know,
they've got a couple of game breakers in their team

(03:51):
that we need to take care of. So massive challenge ahead,
but one that we're excited to head to cross.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Use for Who are they? Who are you keeping an
eye on? Where are your cross hairs?

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Hey, the number fifteen is not a bad Reuby player.
You give them time in space. You know he can
cut anyone up, So you know, he's definitely one that
we need to look out for. You know, their twelve
players a massive part of their game, massive leader and
their group and it really takes these kind of games
by the scruff of the neck. So you know that
most were we looking at definitely those two guys in

(04:25):
the back line. And hey, then then up front they've
got a massive amount of experience and semi final footy
and you know, we know, you know, when when these
games come to town. Uh, the affwards will take a lead
and you know you'll see the best out of you know,
Scott Barrett and Cody Taylor. So you know we're going

(04:45):
to have to be on our game to get down
there and really take it to these voice.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
I like the way you name part of the pack,
but you're not interested in attaching a name to any
of the guys out there in the back line. Is
that deliberate? Is that just a forward thing?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Oh? Mate? You know, as forwards, we kind of look
after one to eight and then just try and make
sure that those other guys look after themselves.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
How much time have you spent talking discipline because you
can't really train discipline, or can you? And this is
always going to be the key when it comes to
crunch matches.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Yeah, oh, I think we saw that on the weekend.
You know how this film is good. We gave them
not many opportunities to get access into our twenty two.
And you know you give to the Crusader's voice access
into your twenty two the bloody efficient in there, so
it's at your peril. So you know we've trained it
this week team to set us up every week this

(05:37):
year and they've done a fantastic job and they've done
that again at training, so may day they put pressure
on us. You know, we've got a real referee at
training to make sure that we're looking at off side
and all these little things that can just give them
access in to us.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Who's the referee, Paul.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Well, we normally have Angus. Maybe he's linked to us,
but we had Todd from Orpen Rugby, so we're grateful
for to come in and give us head.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
I say that used to give me a hand as well.
He produced my chew for a couple of years. In fact,
it was my boss before he disappeared to be a
full time refere He's fine, mate, He's very understanding and
he can deal with talent if you call us that
in a very relaxed and calm way. It's all about timing, Paul.
You probably didn't want to cut it this close. It

(06:25):
was a pretty rotten start to the season, but it
looks like you're peeking right at the right time. Not
not by design, but it's working now and you've got
pretty much a full quiver to pick from, so things
are falling into place for you.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Yeah, you could mostly looking like that. You know we've
we've certainly chugged along this year. You know, we have
been great for most of the comp but you know,
it comes down to these big moments and these big games,
and we're bloody excited and I think that's the main thing.
And the boys, there's some energy around the place st
you know, we're excited about the change ahead and getting

(07:03):
down the crosses.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
You could make this the last on the Crusaders play
at the Orange, theory lean to before next year they
change to a proper stadium. Does that count much that
you might be able to put them away at home?

Speaker 3 (07:17):
Well not really, but it is not the greatest spot
to go, to be fair, So it'd be quite nice
to you to finish finish with a win down there.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
I'm not going to disagree with that one. Paul Tetor,
thank you so much for joining us. Wishing you the
best on Friday night, go there, get stuck.
