Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
S'b got up early enough this morning. Well it is
for me anyway out of a scratcher crawled away down
to is it south West Auckland kind of money co
out toward the airport colin Dale Park. I just put
it in my phone and it sent me there.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
I got.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Why did I go there? I went there because the
Sir Colin Giltrap Raceway officially opened at something you've been
working on for a very long time. It is a
fantastic facility. When I'm down there, I was a few
old race car crew kids down remember Johnny Reid. Johnny
Reid from a one GP something that Sir Colin Giltrap
had a lot to do with. He was down there,
(00:54):
were you all? Sad Mitch Evans who's currently running in
the Formula E competition next she's come back a specially
for this opening as old man was down there too.
Owen Evans super called great to catch up with him
or the list goes on. What about Wade Cunningham, former
World Carding Champion, He was there as well, all there
(01:14):
for the opening. Scott Dixon was there not the whole
Farno bit. Nearly Tilly a daughter. Bobby went to the
gym apparently wasn't interested in going to the motorsport. And
the young fella Kat the Nipper he was there too,
with the ministry of wife Emma, who's charming lady, and
of course Scott Dixon. So I went down there. I
(01:36):
forced him into a corner, held him in a chokehold
and put my mic to his face. I talked to
Scott about all sorts of stuff. Didn't take long, didn't
want to bore him. Take a listen. Scott Dixon joins
us down a brand new facility. You've had your son
Kit down here driving around as well. This is a
(01:58):
fantastic facility. A lot for Sir Colin Giltrap, one of
the absolute icons of motorsport in this country. Even drove
on thinking, yeah, has.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Been huge, Yes, Sir Colin Giltrap Raceway very fitting obviously.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
I think this has been in the works.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
For ten plus years, maybe longer, you know, car sport
New Zealand, and obviously with kind of Auckland Track and
Mount Wellington kind of uniformly coming together, I think is huge.
It's huge for you know, the tradition that we have
in New Zealand. It's a beautiful facility, world class, which
you know, hopefully they can have international races down here
(02:35):
as well. You know, it's where we're lucky being in
the southern hemisphere. You know, it's it's winter for a
lot of other countries, especially in Europe and throughout North America,
where I was able to race in junior categories against
the best in the world. Who's still come down here.
So yeah, Sir Colin, what a guy. You know, what
he gave to not just motor racing, but through you know,
(02:57):
you kind of learn of you know, Sir Colin's legacy
throughout the years and what he did for so many people.
You know, it's just astounding, so very fitting to the
grassroots of motor racing and one of his passions and
one of his loves along with you know, Jenny and
Richard and Michael and the whole girl Trap group.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
So yes, it's really.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Cool and for Kit to be, you know, one of
the first drivers to drive around here.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
I don't know, man, I'm gonna I'll.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
Be coming for you for some sponsorship here soon, so
I know it's going to be a long road.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
It was hilarious seeing that little KT Dixon and his
fire suiting, his little helmet. He's more interested in climbing
their fence and actually racing. But he looks like he's
got something about him, doesn't it. He look good out there.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
He if he has anything as energy, it's crazy, man.
He's running on probably three hours sleep. You know. We
got in from from the UK last night, you know,
probably eleven o'clock and then out here straight the next day.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
But even last night he wouldn't go to sleep because
he's like, are we going to go? Cut track? Here
we go.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
I'm like, no, we have to sleep first and then
we'll go out there. So then after a three hour
kind of nap, he's like, Okay, we're ready to go.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
I'm like, no, we still got a little while to go.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
But yeah, his his passion for cars in general, which
I never really had the passion for. I loved racing
and go karts and formula cars. You know, it's very
special to see his his take to it.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Straight away.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
I spoke to Tilly your daughters down here as well,
and she said, oh, look all the photos of Kit
when he's little, and the photos are dead they're almost identical,
and the same with their attitude as well.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Yeah, Kit's probably a little more slim line than I was.
Too many meat pies, I think for me back in
the day. But no, you know, it's it's so good
to Honestly, it's so good to be home. You know,
the kids haven't been back to New Zealand for three years,
you know, Poppy, Tilly and Kit. You know, these are
these are years too for them, especially for Kit now
that he'll have memories forever, you know, he's old enough
(04:45):
to to really remember it. And you know, we're doing
so much. You know, we're going to the mountain to
Queenstown and then to Waihiki and you know, hopefully a
bit of jetboat you know, stuff for Kit to go
cutting here, Poppy wants to go do bungee jumping. So
we're gonna knock it all out, man, and definitely going
to make a huge, you know, commitment to coming back
(05:05):
home a lot more often.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
What is twenty twenty six even still for you?
Speaker 4 (05:08):
Yeah, I'm excited, you know, a little bit, you know, revamped,
I think in you know, last year was just such
a downer in the fact that we had you know,
I think sex engine penalties or sex engine failures. Then
we had you know, hybrid failures, and to finish that
in the championship, but I don't even know how we
did that. It was nice to get the win at
mit Ohio. You know, I think we should have won
the first race at Saint Pete. You know, the saving
(05:31):
grace was you know, my teammate, obviously, Alex had a
tremendous year with with was it eight victories and obviously
his first Oval win which was the biggest oval that you.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Can win at with the Indianapolis five hundred.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
So you know, if we can't do it, you know,
that team have been with for you know, twenty four years.
I think next season we'll be my twenty fifth, you know.
To see them in victory Lane and winning the championship
in the eighty five hundred and the same year, you know,
reflects a lot to you know, the first time I
did that, But honestly, it's it's so good to see it.
So I'm pumped, man, I'm amped and ready to go
(06:02):
for next year. Probably a little bit of downtime here
in New Zealand first, but then we kick off actually
for Daytona twenty four a studying middle of January.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, I was going to say, you must be got in.
The cars are something you traditionally do over that summer break.
You love that. You just addicted to it, aren't you.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Yeah, it's so much fun. You know, the cars are
pretty complicated. Now they're a bigger, heavier car, but you know,
technically they're they're insane. You know, the systems that they
run with the hybrids and different driver controls and things
like that. So you know, for me, it's a nice
kind of compliment to the any car season. I get
to do three or four races in the endurance side, obviously,
starting with Daytona then Seabrick Lama. I don't think I'm
(06:39):
going to be able to do this year, just schedule
WIS conflicts and then petite them later in the season.
So looking forward to getting both categories gone and.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Your expectation from your number nine car this Yeah, and
by the way, I see that Kit's got a ninety,
which is your number when you're younger too.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
The first first number I had in go karts was
ninety and then it changed to thirty five and I
was a couple of years in but yeah, kind of
weird how that turned up today and had the ninety
on it. So thankful for everybody that was able to
make that happen today. But yeah, the goals are the same.
First win the Indy five hundred and second win that
seven championship.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
And the on nine car. What's what's changed, particularly in
twenty twenty six, Ye're looking at much different or on.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
The technical side.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
I think we really honed into a few different things
personally for myself, which will you know, I think we've
seen it already translate quite well in some postseason testing,
you know, and honestly, we just need.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
To keep it more simple.
Speaker 4 (07:33):
There'll be some personnel changes I think coming in the
new year, but nothing, nothing too crazy.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
We had a really good base.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
Obviously it was a new engineer for me this year again,
so working back with Brad, which you know, looking forward
to that. But the core group, you know, the core
group will said the same special mechanics pit stop guys.
They won the pit stop competition for the throughout the
season last year, you know, so that that's huge for
them and obviously huge for the team. But yeah, it's
(08:02):
kind of weird. This off season is quite long in IndyCar,
but just really really excited to get going again.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Yeah right, you're looking good, you're looking fit, you're looking
like you've got a good another teen years lifting.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
Yeah, start racing, keep going, keep going there for sure.
How good to see you, Scott.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
