Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldegrave
from News Talks EDB, All Talk, Old Talk, All Sports,
All Sports. It's Sports Talk with Elliott Smith on News
Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
It is fourteen after seven here on News Talks EDB
this evening will about an hour or so ago. The
Warriors team named to face the canber Raiders on Saturday, sorry,
Friday evening, New Zealand time ten pm. And it's a
different looking team to the one that lost to the
Bulldogs in Golden Points before the bye. There's no Charles
Nical Crook's Day's out with the calf injury. Marcelo Montoya

(00:45):
is out as well. Taku Harrison used today that he's
going to miss the rest of the season. To the
back line looks very very different. The full pack exactly
the same, but tor piki Wati's Leslie Eki a Tower,
Pompey toy basa check on the wing, Harris Devita to
Mighty Martin. Is your Warriors back line? Lekahalasima the other
point of interest named for a second match on the

(01:06):
interchange to join that to discuss that and plenty more
here on News Talks. He'd be as Warriors assistant coach
Lake Griffin, who joins us this evening slay Hounds things.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
I'm good mate, how are you?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah? Really well?

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Thank you?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Look, Warrior is back in action after the by against
the Raiders on Friday night. But look, let's start, unfortunately
on a down note with the news today that Tahu
Harris is out for the season with his wrist injury.
Just how much of a blow is that for your
Warriors camp?

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, I mean, who's an inspirational leader and player. We
all know what he's capable of.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
Unfortunately he's just been a bit hampered by that risk
injury and yeah he's people to know, but kind of
what he's had to deal with off the field, even
just in his personal life, just managing that risk pain
has been has been a really tough time for him.
So yeah, we'll miss him, but you know, it's always
the next man up cliche. So it's an opportunity for

(02:05):
one of our other players. And whenever we've had one
of those kind of younger boys step up or someone
get the opportunity to get more minutes, they have done
a good job there. So yeah, we'll have to play
a bit differently because he gives us that ballplaying option
through the middle. But yeah, coaches have been in the
lab trying to trying to figure out different ways.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
I'm sure the lab has been been working over time.
How do you replace some as a leader? I know,
as a captain. You know, Mitch Barnett's going to take
that duty, but he brings so much, doesn't he to
the to the camps as a leader. How do you
replace that sort of intangible thing on the park?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Ah, I think it's just.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
A few of our other boys have really stood up
in that area, like Dylan Walker, Yeah, Mitch Barnett, Kirk Cate, well,
Wade Egan. So we've got a lot of you know,
senior players who are all just sharing that load now.
So Mitch Barnette leads in a different way and the
boys really responded to you know, his his motivation and

(03:03):
he leaves by his actions as well. So we'll miss Tohu.
But yeah, Mitch is really proud and honored to be
the new captain. So yeah, really excited to see how
he goes for rest of the year.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
How frustrating is that in Casualty Ward You've got at
the moment with Torhue or Rocky Rocketberry still in there,
Shawn Johnson, Luke Metcalf obviously been out for a while.
I'm Montoya Nicol Kluck start. You know, I'm rielling off
some of the real starters. You know that the high
profile players the team. How frustrating is that for you
as a coaching group.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Oh look, we just I.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Know it's boring, but sometimes you just get stuck in
where we're at right now and.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
You're just week to week. But yeah, we went through
this kind of period a while ago and then we
got a lot back and now we're kind of back there.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
But we've had kind of that all year. So the
boy has been really good dealing with adversity. Players have
played in different positions or different sides of the field.
But yeah, we just want to really simplify a game,
and we know what our identity is and whoever steps
in whatever position or.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Pools on a Warrior's jersey knows what what they need
to bring.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
So yeah, well, speaking of that versatility, Roger ti Vasischik
moves back out to the wing this week. With the
changes that you've made with the Lattawa and Pompey in
the centers, you know, he's played center this week the season,
he's already played wing in one game. He's obviously done
fallback as well. That speaks to the versatility that you've
probably got and players like Roger.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
Yeah, he's been very selfless actually come back from Rugby,
getting used to our defensive systems again and he's a
move left, right, wing, center, fallback.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
So yeah, really excited to see him on the wing.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
It'll free him up a little bit to get you know,
hopefully more touches of the football out of the backfield
earlier in the sets. So that's when Roger's very dangerous.
So hopefully we'll get his carries up again. Like Ali's
only just got back, so we haven't kind of had
that guy that we could bring into the Senate to
push Roger to the wing.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
So yeah, very excited to see how Roger goes on
the wing.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Shawan Johnson and Luke metcalf Inch and closer to returns.
So what are they actually able to do at the
moment in terms of training and I think the word
today three to five weeks away for both of them.
So are they back out running on the park.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Yeah, they actually just jumped into a little bit of
training this week and looked pretty sharp, so that gave
us very good practice.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
They kind of jumped on in a.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
Few drills and on the B team for a little
bit to throw ask some questions of us defensively. So yeah,
they're just integrating back in. Obviously Luke's had a history
there and his a little bit longer. I'm not sure
exactly how long, but they're definitely back into some footy
stuff now, is which is good for us.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Licqua Hallasima debilling last time out. How exciting to have
a young talent like that in the group and gets
another opportunity off the interchange this week against the Raiders.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Yeah, it's awesome. He's i think under nineteens this year, so.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Seeing what he did with his first carry again a
player that come on in the middle and then he
ended up playing center, so shows the versatility he's got
just the pure athlete he is, but he's been working
really hard just just learning all those fundamentals we call it.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
But yeah, I think he's got a very very bright future.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Did the buy come at a good time? I don't know.
You probably didn't want to go into the buy on
a loss, but did come as a good time just
to break up this campaign and you've got what seven
games coming in a stretch to end the season.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Yeah, a bit of an odd one thought.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
We actually played pretty good against the Bulldogs with our
effort and our defense. We just kind of missed our
attacking combinations and probably like to have a few players back.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
But I mean it's always good to fresh and the
boys up.

Speaker 4 (06:57):
We've got a pretty tough trip to Canberra this week,
so it does make the travel a bit easier coming
off of buy so the boys are fresh theyd They've
got four days off so we've actually been getting pretty
decent weather as well.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
So yeah, I think that fresh and ready to go
to attack this last period of the season.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, it's a it's a stritch, isn't it, Because you've got,
you know, you're in twelfth at the moment, this run
of games in front of you, and obviously you're sort
of chasing the top eight, so there's a there's a
bit of a task in front of you. But how
energized to the team to to get where they want
to be this season?

Speaker 4 (07:30):
No, Yeah, they know, you know it's going to be tough.
We've got to win some football games, but we just
want to have fun while we're while we're chasing that. Yeah,
we've we've been very close in a few games, and
if we asked a few of those, you know, it's
so tight from where we are up to sixth place,

(07:51):
a couple of wins could make a huge difference. So yeah,
again we'll go back to taking it a week at
a time. Can't look past your opponent. You got to
respect the opponent you're playing and seeing any week in
NRL teams are beating each other. So yeah, we just
got to one week at a time, and it's a
big one for us this week obviously over in Canberra.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, and look eleven v. Twelve on the ladder, a
four point competition game and in many ways, where are
their threats that this season? How do you think that
matchup looks from a Warrior's perspective.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
Yeah, they've obviously got some big, strong forwards Tarpani Papoli
that laid the platform for them. You know, Jordan up
on a very dangerous and then I think Foggy'll be
back so his kicking game. They are a typical rookie
Stewart team. You know, they don't quit, They stay in
the Army with your big, strong, powerful So yeah, it's

(08:45):
going to be a real physical challenge in a real
grindy game, especially over there in Canberra. So yeah, it's
going to be a tough one. But yeah we just
got to We've got to turn it up and match
it with them.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yeah, and Origin tomorrow night of course as well. A
foot in both games or a player in both games,
I should say from Mitch Bunny and Cap, well where
do your loyalties lie? Do you have a team and
or do you just hope that both players get out
unscathed from tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah, it'll be weird going for both players. Will be
finally see if they come, you know, tackle each other or.

Speaker 4 (09:20):
I'm a Blues man though, so I grew up going
for the Blues. So yeah, fingers cross they can get
it done up there. It's going to be very hard
in some court, but yeah, go.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
To the Blues.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Very tricky place to go. Hey, Slade, really appreciate your
