Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
They have done it in their way. They have done
this humility. They had connection through cramps tonight. This team
has never stopped believing, have had each other's bags any
way through.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
They've done it for the third What a moment for
that team.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
What a moment. Indeed, White Ferns Captain Sophie Divine is
with us T twenty world champion White Ferns Captain Sophie
Divine to give you your correct title. How were the celebrations
last night?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Sophie?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Hey, Parie, you look, I think some of the girls
are still going this morning that haven't been to sleep yet,
but it's a good shift from them. But look, I
think it it's been a pretty special occasion, so right,
we deserve a good celebration.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
With it, absolutely right. So having given it the overnight test,
presumably you've had a couple of hours sleep. How do
you reflect back on the final? Yeah, let's start with
the final. How do you reflect back on the win
in the final and New Zealand's performance in it?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Oh, look, I think certainly that I'm really proud of
is that we're able to perform in a way that
we've spoke about at links that you know, we want
to be aggressive, we want to take the game on
and to be able to do that in a World
Cup final. It's one thing to do, I guess during
the pool stages, but to put it together like we
did last night against a South Fican side that you know,
just the match before had absolutely demolished Australia, I think

(01:36):
it just shows, I guess, the strength and resilience and
this group to be able to back it up and
find a way to put it together. So just incredibly
proud of el performance from the group.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
One fifty eight at the innings break. Did that feel
like enough you felt like you could defend that?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, definitely. I think obviously the scores of the tournament
has been pretty low, just with the touching conditions and
things like that, but last night's working I thought was
a a really good cricket work at So for us
we were always taggling one forty one fifty over that
we were really pleased with. Yeah, like absolutely we would
have guess out to defend anything. So it was it

(02:12):
was a really competitive score and obviously ended up being
too much with chaut Africa and.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
When you look at the way the bowlers bold to
defend that total and get your home comfortably in the
end by thirty two runs. What are your what was
your assessment of the way the bowling unit attacked their
task in the final?

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Well, I think not just in the final, but I
think they've been fantastic throughout and I think we've seen
spin has obviously dominated that. I need to give a
shout out to the quick bowlers in terms of leader
to who Who and enrosem Miror and what they've been
able to achieve on pretty tough, loow slow wickets. But
I guess we always knew that the power play was
going to be really important and jutifica came at our

(02:50):
hard and to be able to hold our nerve, and
I thought, leader to who who's over, the night's over
to her to go out and really start to tie
them down. That shifted momentum and from there we were
just able to squeeze to be able to build that
one rate, which you know in finals it was really
because that pressure is magnified. So again the ball was

(03:11):
accident and to be able to throw any one of
them the ball and know that they can do a
job as makes my life a hell of a lot easier.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
It's well documented that you came into the tournament with
no form to speak of. What was it about the
last two or three weeks and the way you played
your cricket that allowed you to go all the way
to the final and win the whole thing.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
It's interesting you say that because you talk about form
in terms of results. Absolutely, we were a bit of
a stinker for being completely honest. Obviously, teen losses in
a row that we knew that the performances that were
starting to put together were you know, there are glimpses
of it and for us to then be able to
pull that together, I think obviously the India game through
stat was always going to be a crucial game for us.

(03:51):
We've been tagging it for a very long time. But
we also knew that the way that we had to
play that we knew that we couldn't be reserved, and
you know, in our show, we need to go out
and take the game on and that really the home
for the rest of the tournament and how play. Obviously
the game against Australia was disappointing, but I mean looking
back now did it matter too much? Probably not, But

(04:13):
yeah again these last couple of weeks, the way it's
been able to roll that performances, and the thing for
me is it's been a real team effort. Has been
someone different every game and stood up obviously nearly que
winning player of the tournament as well last night with outstanding.
But the support, she said from his fellow spinners, but
also the other bowlers people with a bat Georgia Plumber
has been outstanding. You know, it is so many people

(04:36):
that you could call out that have done a job
and being asked for the World Cup trophy.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
I heard you and your postmach interview. Will one of
them say that, I think it was the night before
the final. You'll let yourself think about what it might
be like to hold that hold that trophy. I know
you've always been very measured in the way that you
approach your cricket, but what were the emotions like when
when you won.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
It's funny because it was it still hasn't really shown
ten to be here. I mean, it's sort of twelve
hours since SINCEU one, but it still hasn't really sunk
in the magnitude of what was been able to achieve
I think, because it hasn't just been the last couple
of weeks, sort within the last couple of years. If not,
you know, my whole career building up to the point

(05:23):
being able to win a World time. Every privat's dreams
is to win a trophy like this, So it hasn't
spunk in, but to be able to spend it with
the team, with the group, with a huge family and
friends last night was it was really special and it's
going to take away while to soak in and we'll
certainly do that. But we've also got another assignment in

(05:44):
a couple of days time, so it's just the nature
of the international schedule at the moment. But take the
time to yeah things so can for what was a
pretty special couple of weeks.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Are you going to reconsider your decision to step down
as take twenty captain?

Speaker 2 (06:00):
No, it's not a chance. I mean, it's a pretty
good way to bow out, but yeah, a lot of
this decision has been a long time coming to me,
and I think it's just a great way to sign
off and hand over to who the next it's going
to be. So yeah, obviously still really keen and still
have a lot more to give, both in the fifty
over format but also T twins as well and just

(06:20):
the playing capacity. So yeah, I think it's a great
way to sign off.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
And what was the actual highlight spelling out Tawa with
the Curse Sisters and Georgia Plumber up on the podium afterwards.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
Well, the embarrassing thing was was how long it took
us to figure out how to spell. It was a
little bit embarrassing from us, but no, look, I think
it was so cool to be able to share that
with people from Tawer, to be able to you know,
have that bond as pretty cool out in the middle

(06:53):
of Two Way International Stadium. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Well a lot of people with two three two in
their phone numbers enjoyed that very much. We all enjoyed
watching the White Ferns become world champion. So if you
thanks for t having a chat to us the morning
after off to India as you say now, but congratulations
to you on the team on what you've achieved. Absolutely sensational.
Thank you Sophie, Sophie Divine joining us they're out of

(07:15):
the UAE. Yeah, look, I think you can forgive them
all for staying up and not going to sleep man,
not every day you become world champions. Heeps to call
social media footage coming through the team and the changing
room afterwards, and yeah, I haven't seen anything from the
Shenanigans overnight. Maybe that's best that they keep that to themselves,

(07:36):
but man, they absolutely deserve it.
