Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncy Wildergrave
from News talks'd be.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Let's move on and talk about a rugby league Origin
on tonight starts ten o'clock gets underway in Perth. We
are joined by Steve Price for what was Skip a
queenstat player a kangaroo as well? Hey Steve, Steve, Steve
as an ex Queensland player. How big is Origin two today?
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah? Mate, one of three of the most exciting days
of the year for me.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
So what are the other two birthdays anniversaries.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Origin one and Oragin three.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
I'm not going to tell your wife, Joe, that's who
won't be overly happy. But it is huge, isn't it.
I'm over in Perth and that's the old one traveling
to the other side of Australia to get this. Duney
didn't have much of effect on the on the players
at all.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
I think they're pretty well looked outter now. I know
the Queensland team went over pretty early. I knew I
didn't go over as early, but yeah, I mean we
used to fly to Perth when I was at the Warriors.
It's just the way it is. It's all good to
play footy, mate, part of your games.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
So play foot well, Queensland have to play footy, don't they.
That's that's important. After what happened last time around, that
have that of a lot of energy I suppose going
into the smatch they have to.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Yeah, mate, they were really well led by by Mitchie
Barnett and paynehats up the front, you know, and that's
why we got beaten pretty badly. So well that something
desperately needs to change there sadly mitches out. Yeah, but
he was very very good in game one and you
know our boys certainly need to fix that up for
(01:50):
us to be any chance. There's been a couple of
changes your captain, you know, Cam and hopefully he'll go
really well and yeah we'll get the results so it'll
be all level. Going to Sydney will be a tough task.
But yeah, there's been a couple of games in Perth, mate,
great stadium, a lot of experts there like Kiwi's and
(02:12):
East Coasters that are there as well as all the
people that'll give it to what's.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
The game you were worth the Queensland team last week?
What did you learn from that experience? I mean, you've
been there done that. But as an essential outsider, what
did they tap you for and what did you deliver?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
I didn't really deliver anything. I was just there, just
witnessing it all. And what I did find is a
really tight knit group. So you know, they are really connected,
sharing a lot of personal stuff with each other, quite
emotional as well, which is great. And yeah, they just
seemed a real happy, tight knit group, which you know
that's going to be really important come tonight when you're
(02:52):
out in the middle and things made me not going
so good. You need that sort of connection and that
support and trust and you know, willing to do it
for your mate. So yeah, I was really impressed by that,
and obviously some of the guys that have met yet
really good kids and really excited about the opportunity to
play in Origin for Queensland.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Jesus, it take you back, it does, it does.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I was getting a little bit emotional just thinking about
these fellas. You know that at nineteen twenty twenty one,
you know, getting to do what they're getting to do
right now. Yeah, very jealous, mate. It's one thing that
I absolutely miss every year is this time of the year.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
If there wasn't any area in origin one that you
would be concerned about. Come Queensland.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
What would it be?
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Where do they have to tighten up or apply themselves
more vigorously.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Well, I think yourself. I was really executed their game
plan very well. Their kicking game was amazing. We were
coming off our triline all night. Our attacking game didn't
even exist because we're never down the attacking end of
the field from our perspective, and you I was just
really control of the game. They probably should have scored
more points, but they didn't have to. You know, they
(04:05):
were just in that control. Say, we got a lot
of work to do in that regard, and starts with
the boys in the middle, trying to really wrestle that
field position opportunity and start to put them under some
pressure at their end of the defense defensive end of
their field, and you know, try and get some errors
out of them. I think because they were in so
(04:26):
much control, they didn't get penalties the way they weren't fatigued. Yeah,
they were just in control. Say we gave penalties away,
you know, we made errors and it just sort of
continues to snowball, I suppose. So it's a fair bit
we've got to change, but it's all possible.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Steve, is there any glaring opening with the new South
Wales that might be able to be exploited? You said
they didn't have to do too much work last time
around because they ran so well. They keep to their
game plan, but you poke yourself in there. Is there
any way you think they might be vulnerable?
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I made. I think if our line speed can be
really aggressive up and into and putting particularly the board
players under pressure in their back five, we're outstanding in
game one. You know Edwards and you know Zach Lomax
and those guys coming out of Trouble Cry, and they're
(05:20):
really really hard to stop. So we need to get
bodies in front, be really aggressive, turn them around so
they're not making any meters, and then get them to
sort of get to feel what it's like coming off
your line for long periods and try and get some
areas out of them. I think if we can get
that in their game, yeah, it could completely turn around
(05:42):
into our favor And that's going to be a really
tough thing to do, but if we can do it,
that's going to really help us get that victory.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Yeah, keys to victory. Playing wise, who do you like
the look of for the Maroon's team. Cherry Evans not there,
replaced by Tom didn at halfback, Monster a skipper. As
you said, Cable's coming back up again. Some of these changes,
where are the key ones, do you think, Steve, Yeah,
we lost.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Obviously our captain, brought in a bit of experience in
with kp he can play any position. I think we've
got that bit more flexibility on the bench with Kurt Man.
He's a smaller forward, but as we've seen in the
NRL this year, that's really worked with the Bulldogs. So
I think Kurt's going to play a big role being
(06:31):
able to come on and whatever position that he comes
on in, he can play anywhere. So that's really good. Yeah,
And I don't know, I just it's really going to
depend on how Billy starts the game. New South Wales
has got a really strong bench, so they come on
and add a lot of energy, enthusiasm and another whole
wave of aggression, you know, with their bench, and we've
(06:54):
got to be able to match that. So hopefully Billy's
going to be able to put a bench in place.
However he decides whether it's his starting team at the moment,
with his bench at the moment or changes it up.
We can have that impact off the bench because we
want to be able to go with them early and
then you know our bench to be able to come
on and lift the tempo and you know, try and
(07:15):
get a few tries and some points on leading to
the half time break.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Mitchell Moses ruled out. But the combination of Louie and Cleary,
the old school reuniting, that's hardly taking a step backwards,
does it, Steve, No, it's not.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I mean from a New South Aer's perspective, that's probably
a really good result for them. If you're going to
lose Mitch, nothing better than bringing in a guy who
played with the other Harvest partner pretty much his whole life.
They grew up playing to get us say yeah, they're
not going to miss anything there, and yeah, it's just
going to be really important for Queensland again to have
(07:55):
New South Wales was in the field position we need
to be because of Loui and if they're getting off
loads and all that sort of stuff, it's just going
to make you a lot harder. And yeah, I'll just
get more and more confident and so on, Nate. So yeah,
we really need to sort of knock that out of
them and try and maintain that for the whole game,
(08:16):
not just as long as we can, for the whole game.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
I want to ask you to predict a winner because
I know where you go, and all I can say
is I hope they play fair, they play tough, and
they apply plenty of discipline. These games never disappoint Steph.
Enjoy yourself tonight. I know I will thank you.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
I don't think any team plays fair and plays for
the rules, but yeah, they'll do their best mate and
hopefully she's all level after the full time sorry goals tonight.
