Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Duncie Wildegrave
from News Talk zed Be.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Northland's Toy Henderson has won the twenty twenty five Golden
Shars Open Sharing Final in Masterton, the.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Winner of the twenty twenty five Bailex Goldland Shares Open
Sharing Championship.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Toy Yeah, Toy Henderson first to finish sharing his twenty sheep.
He did that in sixteen minutes, fifteen points seven seven
nine seconds to be precise, beating widded Up. I hope
David Buick by eight seconds. Then his quality was enough
to carry him through to win overall. Toy Henderson is

(00:48):
with us congratulations tour on being twenty twenty five Golden
Shares Champion. How much does this title mean to you.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
A mate? I'll let you know, this has been a
dreamwine ever since I was a little hollow. I've made
every Golden Shaars final from the novel right through to
the seniors and yeah today to win the Open means
so much to me because.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
I know that last year you were the hot favorite,
but it didn't go anywhere near the way you wanted
it to. In twenty twenty four. What happened last year.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
First of all, I think I went down to Marcel
and but two tenths mate, Like you know, it's you
know when when you can change them with those fellows,
you know, it's all about you know, everyone must to
win all there for one thing. But this year I
just went down. I was chewing my drink, gun had
to drink the water. And yeah, I just couldn't give,

(01:46):
you know, two goes and yeah I just done, just
just got up there and share and what I do
every weekend and just and just sure and got the win.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Now tell us about the mix that you need of
speed and quality because you can finish first, But that
doesn't necessarily give you the title, does it? Can you
just explaining for us?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, Well, on Saturday night it was a big one
because I knew David Bilke, you know, he's he's a
dark horse, you know, same as Leon Samuel's Roland Smith.
But they went in the final that night, and so
David was sort of the one on one on my mind.

(02:30):
And then yeah, we just got the final, and yeah,
I just made sure, you know, I've got to keep
my quality and try and do what I do best.
So there's time points and then hopefully you know, all
those fellows that are chasing makes mistakes and I can
get the win.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, because they can't take time off, you can they,
but they can take points off for quality. How do
they judge quality? Is it just is it just the
literally the way you share each sheep?

Speaker 3 (02:59):
No, it's so you've got the judges on the board.
They look for sticking cuts and you got judge at
the back. But yes, and there's a big one. They
you know, they didn't the whole time, and I'm just
so grateful. You know, I've got to bring their title.
Betame to Cole.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Did you feel confident once you'd made the final?

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, I would say, like, you know, after missing out
last year, there was no way I was going to
miss out again. And and after making that Golden Ches final,
you know, and I was sitting down with all the
boys and I just thought, you know, there's me and
six of them, five of them, and uh, yeah, I'm

(03:45):
just going to do it. And you know, if you
want to beat me, I'm going to put my best
soot forward.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
What were the emotions like once you knew you'd won.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Oh, you probably have seen a couple of reels, matey,
I have I have. That's a dream comes true for me.
You know, my am I sharing career. That's all I do.
Like I've been up here practicing for years, mate, Like
you know, I I've been over it. You know it's

(04:16):
been it's been a good seven eight years.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
You know.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
I've just been training, training, training, dreaming about Rollald Smith,
dreaming about you know, Paul Avery, Johnny Kirkpatrick, David Fagan.
And the last week I was just I was down
the mass and all I'd done was I went to
the Golden Chairs and I'll come back home and I
was just watching Golden Cheers finals and you know if

(04:41):
I made that final. I was just trying to expect,
you know, what am I going to do? And and yeah,
I made the Golden Chess final made and I've done it.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
So you know you're based in Kywalker in Northland. So
how far do you have to travel to to compete?
Not just for Golden Cheres we know that's and wipe
it upper, but traveling around to other competitions. You must
spend a bit of time on the do.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
You Yeah, we spend a bit of time on the RoadMate,
Like it's usually so we call Hamilton Hay so Hamilton's
about three hours from home, so usually from Hamilton back,
you know, we might get a ticker with Edith's about
half from Hamilton and then yeah, so we just know,

(05:31):
me and my dad we do case out. I usually
one in the morning. This morning, me and my wife
left Pummers in Norfolk to two o'clock this morning we
went back talking about nine o'clockage here to fly out.
So yeah, it's just it's it's always a mission, but
you know, to to finally, you know, get that get

(05:53):
that trophy and bring it back to Norfold. You know.
Oh we're all proud of Yeah, I love my family
for it.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
So you shall be. So you shall be very proud.
And next year in Masterton it's the world chearing. So
is that on your radar?

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, there's always been on my radar, mate. I always
want to be a real champ. But yes, I finally
last night I got my beads with a with a
sum fern on my chest. So I'll get my blazer
in that and yeah whatever comes after that, you know,
I always be there for our country and well I

(06:31):
can hope is the best and yeah, let's go, awfully.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Let's go. Indeed, amazing achievement over the weekend tour. No
one can ever take this away from you make twenty
twenty five Golden Shears Champion. Thanks for taking the time
for a chat.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yes mate, thank you.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Thank you to Toy Henderson. There after winning the Golden
Shears on Saturday night in Masterton, iconic event, Gavin says Jason,
thanks for having Sharing on the show. And I think
sharers at the top level get the recognition they deserve
as athletes. We've had so many successful sharers over the years,
Thanksgavin here we have indeed, I think David Fagan is

(07:07):
the name that jumps instantly to mine, but many others
as well. And Toy Henderson the latest to win the
Golden Shears in Masterden.
