Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It's seven forty five, that says the News Talk's AB.
It's all about skidding it now on the dirt in
the mud, and we're joined by being the hunt currently
leading that he's in a rally championship after one round.
That round was in Otago.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
He's with us now. Good morning, hey mate, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I'm well yourself. You've got three national rally championships under
your belt. You're looking down the line at a fourth.
You've had a great start so far winning an Otago.
It is round two. Where are your confidence levels that night?
And welcome to the show.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Hey, and I thank you.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
It's obviously pretty unknown. It's every rally changes, but we're
pretty confident. We're just going to go out there and
do our own thing and we're loving the Scota at
the moment.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
So yeah, hopefully we.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Can take off where we finished at Otaga and have
a good.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Rally down here in South Canby.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
What did you learn out of the Otago adventure? Anything
else that you picked up around the car's performance, around tires,
around anything you've been around a while you're an experienced character,
but there's always room to pick up new information surely.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Yeah, obviously it's you know, we're always learning and you
make mistakes some days of different That can be anything,
you know, changing a tire or whatever. But you know
one thing that probably stood out down the os hell
well former national champion Brian Stokes. As two boys went
in a Ford and a Scota, so good to see them.
It's obviously they've been driving a long time, but especially
(01:42):
the young one, Jack, first time in a full drive
car and he was giving Robbie's brother and mea a
bit of a hurry up all weekend. So it was
a real cool cold otarge, nice and closer. You're just
looking forward to a good better again this weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
What was the difference? What was the reason you came
out on top they didn't.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
There's only two seconds in it, so probably not a lot.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
But yeah, it's obviously awesome for us to win Otago.
We hadn't hadn't done that before and ya been close
a lot of times. But obviously there's one man, Hayden
Peddin that always gets in the way. So he was
peddling a escort for the weekend in the classics, So
pretty lucky there.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
That's old school cool, that's what that is. You tempted
to whip his keys and go for a skid net yourself. Been.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
Yeah, they're one of my favorite cars, you know, watching
all the old WC guys in the in the Mark
two escots is pretty cool. And they have him and
Meek and there at Otago a few weeks ago it
was pretty special. So yeah, one day maybe, but I
haven't got enough gray hairs yet.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
What's cross meet?
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Didn't He came over to compete, and I suppose from
their point of view, wonderful to run on these roads,
which they they don't really get to do enough because
the will Brolly champs don't come here, mate, do they.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:57):
He absolutely loves Otago and wants to keep coming back.
So the roads down there unreal and they got so
much to choose from, but you know, same as timor
a lot down here, so pretty cool with all the
farming and man of roads to choose from. And we're
going into forest, which is cool because a lot of
public stages these days. But yeah, it's got a good
(03:18):
mix of stages down here.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
This year, they've run this really around there quite a lot.
What's your experience in South Canterbury.
Speaker 4 (03:26):
It's actually, you know, we love this really and they've
actually thrown a big spinner in the works this year
and haven't used many stages that we've done before or
they're in reverse or something, so not too much history
on roads, so are we big cool?
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Even we have to go hard from the start.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Expectations around that are pretty pretty standard. Lot of canber
and something you'd like, not too different to otag or
remarkably different. What are your expectations?
Speaker 4 (03:53):
I suppose very fast down here, like three or four
of the stages down here, you're probably not going to
use the brakes or lift off the thoddle for three
or four kilometers, so other years I've been a little
bit tighter in places, but the forest stage is definitely
the trickiest one of the event, and we do that
the first stage and the last stage of the day.
So yeah, there'll be definitely the stage to win the
(04:16):
rally on, or will be a few people places down
the field.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
And there's three rallies. I think half the events from
the South Island this year because you're sticking Canterbury, not
the South version, but you know Canterbury regular come start
of June.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
It was that unusual America.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
That's awesome way the format of the Championship the last years,
it definitely makes it, you know, a sport that's getting
more exventive every day, making it a bit cheaper. You know,
we leave our truck and trailer down here and you know,
just keep moving at North every rally and then after
Cannaby and Kingsworth they will take it back up to
walk them. But yeah, it's a good way to do
(04:54):
the championship and hopefully makes it a bit more affordable
for everyone that's doing it.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I think the best way to make rallying affordable is
just don't do it.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
Yeah, you're right, but that's think So, yeah, you only
live once, and yeah, I have a ball in the
car and you know, obviously there's a lot of hard
work that goes in the outside the car, but then
when you get back in the car, it's something that
you can't help. So it's best feeling on earth and
it's probably drug that that's why we all do it.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
I know, just sitting in the idiot's seat and being
pedled around the place gives me a massive thrill. I
can't stop smiling lit alone trying to point the thing
in the right direction. That must be epic. One last
thing for you, being Hunt and things so much for
joining us. That as always the new upcoming peddlers. You've seen?
What talent have you seen around that may be popped
(05:46):
out of the woodwork and otarget?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Yeah, I think, like I said earlier, probably Jack Stokes. Yeah,
the first time in a full drive cardotager and definitely,
you know, I think he was the one stage one
and you know what a way to start in his
full drive career and obviously gave us all us old
boys a bit of a redder up, so we had
a pull finger, but he definitely wanted to watch out for.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
I'll give you the tip mate, you're not that old.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
I've been doing it in a while.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I feel old started jang. Hey, being aren't good on you?
You look after yourself. Go well and hit the ground
running with the flames at your feet, mate, I know
you'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
Cool cheers mate, great talking to you.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Well, it's great to catch up with you, Being Hunt.
Although hit the ground runnings probably idea is it stay
in your car mate, if you want to watch this
is a live stream injined Ready champs dot co dot
in z.
