Waldgrave from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Second year of the Next Gen m Z Championship gets
under way. It's this weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:16):
It's the New Zealand's premier motorsports summer series. With success
in the first year, looking to go bigger and better,
the championship agains at Hampton Downs this weekend. We joined
the show now by VH Supercar driver Brock Feene. He's
leading the VH Supercars at the moment, but we're not
talking supercars, we're talking the next Gen Championship.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Brook morning. How are you Yeah?

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Great, Yeah, pretty stoked to be over here again.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Well that said again you become a recidivus. Well last
year you're in the same series squirting round. What did
you competing last year? Bit of MZGP with the wings
and slicks.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Yeah, no, it's been awesome.

Speaker 5 (00:51):
Been over here already a couple of times this year.
Did the New Zealand Grand Prix and the in the
Toyotas at the start of the year, which was awesome.
It was my first race and open wheeler and we
stuck it on pole which was pretty cool. But then
we're back for the v Eights and Taupo a few
months later and here again at Hampton Downs, which is
super exciting.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
So just looking forward to another weeknd racing to be honest, but.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Massive weeke in these summer series getting bigger and bigger,
and this is the second edition of Nick's Gin and
the categories well they spread right across.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
It's a crazy days racing.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Are you gonna geek out once you've got out of
your car and sit in the stands and check it
all out?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Well, look as exciting.

Speaker 5 (01:26):
I mean, obviously you can see the track from the
highway and driving in just seeing how busy it is
and how many categories there are is pretty fantastic. So look,
I always love racing over here. We get very well
looked after and just have good fun. So it's great
to be back. It's my first time racing a GT
car here and first time on the full track, so
looking forward to having a bit of fun and just

(01:47):
enjoying myself.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
So far.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Have you dealt with the double bastard before? Are they
still calling it that?

Speaker 5 (01:51):
Are they they still call it that? I didn't know why,
but I figured out pretty quickly it is a challenging corner,
that's for sure. I spoke to a few people Friday
morning and they're going, yeah, it's pretty challenging and you
figure that out pretty quick. But look, I've drove the
short track here before, but honestly, the long track is
so much fun. You know, the first few laps I

(02:13):
was just loving life, so really enjoying it so far
and looking forward to racing around here.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Alliance Services Hampton Downs GT International, that's the name of
the event. You're running a GT three AUDI. What are
your expectations, What do you want to get out of
this trip?

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Yeah, we're currently second in the championship, so we're only
we're about a race worth of points behind the leader.
So it's the last round of the Australian GT Championship.
We need a bit of luck on our side this
weekend to try and fight for the win. But yeah, look,
hopefully we can win a couple of races and put
ourselves in with a shot of winning the championship. It's
been a fun year but it is very exciting to

(02:48):
finish it up here.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
In New Zealand, member Shane van Gisberg and the way
he used to keep fit was to just keep racing,
and every other weekend he was out of supercars, he
was off over here doing something. Are you the same
kind of character, the more seat time you've got the bit, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
I think Shane really said a precedence of that, and
he was my first ever teammate in in V eight Subercar,
so I felt like I learned a lot off him,
and the biggest one was just race.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Just our jobs to race, and we need to do
that as much as we can.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
So look, it does take a bit of time to
build yourself a bit of a brand where people are
happy for you to come and drive their cars. And thankfully,
over the last couple of years I've been out to
do a fair bit of GT three racing. So yeah,
race with Brad Schumacher in the Audi this year which
has been lots of fun. Probably done about twenty two
to twenty three events this year, which has been very busy,

(03:35):
don't spend too much time at home, but it's great
and it's been my best year yet.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
So it's obviously working.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
And working very well. On supercars.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
You've only got two more rounds to go the magnificence
of Adelaide, but you've got sand Down coming up first,
What a Triple eight think about you tearing off over
the ditch to race tintop race?

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Sorry a GT three cup car.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, they're stoked.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Look when I go to them and say, hey, I've
got these opportunities to do these races, I actually haven't
had once really where they've gone. No, it's probably not
the best idea, you know, as long as it doesn't
clash or or is it going to affect my preparation
for the supercars.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
They stoked for me to do it, and it works
out very well.

Speaker 5 (04:13):
Tony Quinn, who's one of our owners at Triple A,
owns the track here at Hampton Downs, is here this weekend,
so it fits in very well. It's very fitting for
me to be here, and they're stoked. They're stoked I'm
doing more racing. I'm stoked I'm doing more racing. And yeah,
hopefully we can have a great weekend out here.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
He owns every race treck in New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Just in case you didn't know, probably even part of
Stay Highway one for or for all I know, just
touching on supercars, were your confidencely wants at right now?

Speaker 2 (04:39):
With this new fangled knockout system that the sitting right.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Now at the top. We've already won a championship, if
you will. Internally, how are you looking toward the end
of this You're feeling good about your car, about the team,
about the way you're driving.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Yeah, I am. It's exciting.

Speaker 5 (04:55):
Obviously, it probably affects me the most being the championship
leader into the finals, but at the same time, I'm
excited for it.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
We've done. We've done a great job this year.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
We've won twelve races, We've got fifteen pole positions, so look,
we've had a fantastic year.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
We just got to keep doing what we've been doing.

Speaker 5 (05:10):
Look, anything can go wrong in these finals and knock
you out, but our focus won't change. We've been able
to win races, get lots of podiums, so it's gonna
be game on come Adelaide.

Speaker 4 (05:20):
We still got to get there. We've got to get
through Sandown.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
We got currently seven drivers that are capable of winning
the championship. After Sandown they will drop back to four
and then it'll be the Grand Final Adelaide.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
So excited looking forward to it.

Speaker 5 (05:32):
To two of my favorite tracks coming up, so hopefully
it's a good couple around for.
