Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waltergrave from News Talk sedb Argy.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Now we're going to go to the Blast Woman behind
the Tridents a few hours time. They're going to start
up against the Falcons, looking for redemption in the final
of the Premiere Hockey League after losing to the same
side last year. Skipper Ala Hyatt Brown joins us. Now,
So talking of that, Ella, do you focus much on

(00:32):
revenge and good morning?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Good morning. There's definitely a little bit of revenge I
think feeling in there. We also actually just played the
last weekend, but yeah, from the final last year, definitely, how.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Do you harness that because I know some athletes they
can't do that. It's just not right for their sense
of being that You're obviously.

Speaker 4 (00:50):
Cool with that.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, it's
just a sports game, so it's nothing personal. I'm sure
we'll enjoy a couple beverages with them after the match,
but we'll go hard out there.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
So looking back to last year, what went wrong?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I thank your classic for us in New Zealand as
we just didn't put the goals away. We definitely had
some good opportunities, so hopefully this year we can slap
those opportunities away.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Okay, where are the strengths this year? Where do you
want to rely on presuming that you can? You're you're
very good on the attack. You do want to put
those goals away. But where else are you strong? Do
you think?

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Ella, We've got a good spine and we've got a
bit of a secret whippon and Liz Thompson one of
our experienced Blexics players who's playing on the outside, so
she'll light up a few of our attacks.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
I think, Well, okay, see she's a secret weapon, but
you know who she is.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
She's a black sip. It's not that secret, is it.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Well, No, she's played over two hundred cats for New Zealand,
but you know she's just coming back into her prime
again though. Yeah, a bit of a whipon.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
How stack with these two teams?

Speaker 2 (01:50):
As far as international representation, like you're a black stick,
how many more players out there have actually represents it
on both sides? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:01):
I think between the teams of the Past or President
players with the Black Sicks is probably maybe spread of
about ten across both teams. I'd say, sorry, five in
each team roughly. Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Does that good?

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Does that make it any easier that you know the
tendencies of the other players because you spend a lot
of time in campaign training with them at that level.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, for sure, you sort of definitely know each other's
strengths and weaknesses. So it's about not focusing on their
team too much, but also being aware of what.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
They can do, so they'll be aware of what you
can and can't do. Being a defensive midfield to tell
us what do you can't what can't you do?

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Are you aware of your weaknesses?

Speaker 3 (02:38):
I can't give away two nish weaknesses out there, but
you know now, I've definitely got a few things up
my sleeve for tomorrow, I reckon.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Which is interesting because you're wear sleeveless vests, don't you,
So everyone's going to see that too exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yes, No, we're in our pretty pink and tail uniform
for the tradents.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
Delightful.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Tell me about the league so far this year? Very
I'm fascinated by hockey in New Zealand because you get
getting invited to these big internationals. Now, we've got no money,
we're not coming, forget about it. We're just going to
play with ourselves, which is very cool. It's same you've
got no money, but I like the attitude. So a
lot of the focus is on this league.

Speaker 4 (03:15):
How's it sit this year?

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Yeah, no, it's really good. I think it's taken a
good step up from last year. You know, we've got
some girls who've come back across from the Hockey One League,
which is a similar setup to ours. But we've definitely
got lots of strong players and all four teams as
of last weekend, all four teams could make the finals,
so that was really exciting having a really strong competitive league.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
You had a lot on your plate, didn't you. I
think you had to win both of your games to
actually get.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Through to the final. Talk about pressure.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yes, we just thought we'd have a slow start to
our campaign and then we just want to peak, you know,
at the right time. See, it was a big task
last weekend, but we did it.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
Another one of your cunning plans, right. I'm beginning to
like the way you think.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yes, you know, we're just keeping things up our sleeve
for sure.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Well what's the turf flike out at lloyd Elsmore? You
start things going at twelve mid day?

Speaker 4 (04:05):
What can you tell me about well, I suppose the
turf's a turf, is it always the same or.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
The Lloyd Ousmore turf is actually slightly different where we
usually trained. So we did sneak over there last night
for training just to get used to it. But no,
it's a good, decent turf over there, and it sounds
like it should be a really cool set up, better
music to be a bear garden, so it should be
really fun for all the supporters.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
And of course the time you spent not being a
black Stick, I believe you're enjoying beer gardens in Belgium,
so this is right up here erely.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
I have done that over my time. Yes, it should
be good.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
And back in the Black Sticks again. So you're lifting,
you must be feeling like you're in very good form.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah, it's been a good year for myself individually, so
hopefully I can just top that off with a good one.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
And as far as national selection is concerned, I'm presuming
the selectors know your strong points and your weak points
and maybe I should bring them and they'll share them
on the show.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Right Yeah, well who knows. We've got a bit of
national selection coming up next week, so hopefully they're thinking
about mu stream right now, I.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Want to looking wishing you the best, hope, it's a
fantastic day for you, afternoon for you, get amongst and
it makes sure you this time reverse what happened last
time around and dish it to the falcons.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Ella, thank you so much for your time.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Awesome, Thank you so much.
