It’s a chance to create history for the Tasman Mako this evening in the NPC.

They'll challenge Hawke's Bay for the Ranfurly Shield in Napier, having never won the Log o' Wood as an amalgamated union.

Halfback Finlay Christie joined Adam Cooper to preview their historic clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
EDB and I'm past right, let's talker NPC Rugby and
as I said, just a moment ago, it would have
been considered the match of the round even without were
the initials Rs Rand Furley Shields added to it.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
But here we are.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
It's Hawks Bay hosting Tasman in a pretty important match
in terms of where things sits in the NPC. Two
unbeaten teams so far too of the front runners for
the title, and the logger Wood is up for grabs.
It's a hawks Bay's cabinet at the moments, so this
will go a long way to decide whether the Magpies
can keep it in the cabinet in the off season.

(00:45):
They've got Tasman seeking the ran Furley Shield for the
very first time. The challenges this evening, let's head into
the Tasman camp now. Starting it half back is friend
all Black Finlay Christy, who is with us now. Finlay
appreciates your time here on Newstalks edby this morning for
you and the Tasman team. How things changed in training

(01:06):
during the week, given that the log of Wood is
up for grabs.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, we've had had a pretty good week and thankfully
we've one of the last the first four games of
the year, so we've been building nicely. But I guess
question we sort of tried to go on over do
it and changed too much. We just tried to build
another good week training wise, and we obviously know the
fakes are a little bit higher and we're really excited

(01:32):
for that. But for us, it's just about getting through
a good week to prep and getting up there on
giving them a.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Good go and you win. So far have come from Manawak, two,
Canterbury Counties, Monaco and and they have plenty just last weekend,
so it's a slide treaty being tested so far the season,
do you think.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah, I think we have obviously plenty on the week
in the top four team at the moment, and our
boys were going to have to sort of dig in
and we had a good week prep for that. We
knew it was going to be quite a physical battle
and he's near under it is to make Canterbury and
so we pretty spoke to beat them home. And we're
really tested in all all our games that we've played.
I don't think you can call any game easy in

(02:10):
this comp there's always upsets and you sort of if
you underestimated team, that's at your own risk. Yeah, we've
been tested.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Like I said, we've also been building quite nicely the
way we want to and getting the game going how
we want to play.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Hawks Bay, on the other hand, what have you made
of their success so far? They've had their storm weeks,
so they've had a pretty big schedule. But what's given
them success again in twenty twenty four so far? Do
you think?

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah, they're obviously a great team. They've been up there
for the last few seasons.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I guess they've got that sort of core group of
players that have been around a long time now, and
I guess, especially when it comes to Ranfilly Field, they
really know how to play and they know how to
defend it. So it's going to be a different beast,
like I said, But yeah, we're really excited for the challenge.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
I mean, finly, you've played at rugby at the absolute
highest level. But for you back in the NPC, what
what does a Ranfilly Shield challenge mean for you personally?

Speaker 4 (02:58):
Yeah, we sort of talked about it today.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Actually, how special it is for not just us as players,
but our community. I guess back in the day it
was sort of the big thing around fairly shield and
we also touched on that Marlborough the only really part
of Tansman that have won it before and rank the
union have held it, and I guess we've only had
limited opportunities challenge wise, So yeah, it's awesome to get

(03:23):
that opportunity. And I've played fifty odd games for Chasmen
and haven't had a talent yet, so this will be
my first one. So yeah, I guess it's just an
awesome opportunity to have a credit history for us. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Quite remarkable, isn't it, considering Tasman's success over a number
of years now in the MPC, that the Shield just
hasn't really come your way. I guess it's the luck
of the draw, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (03:42):
That's not exactly I think.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, my first five seasons we didn't even have a challenge,
so yeah, it's exactly luck of the draw. And when
you do get an opportunity, you got to take it
because you never know when another one will come around.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
I see there's been chatter of possible celebrations and things
back Home and Nelson. It appears the community are pretty
excited as to what could happen up in Naper this weekend.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, I can imagine they would be, but we've tried
to keep it in house and focus on the game first.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
We haven't really talked about much of things like that,
but we know the community to be getting right behind us, and.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
I guess they'll be excited at what could happen, So
you'll look to play that game first and try and
get the wind infinitely.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yourself individually obviously involved in the All Blacks start of
the campaign this year back in MPC. Now, where's your
kind of rugby at this year? I guess you eyeing
sort of possibly been back in the mix mix of
the interview tour and things.

Speaker 4 (04:33):
Yeah, I love.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
That's always always my goal. I want to be in
a black jersey, And at the moment, I'm obviously peesman
playing my code, so I'm just trying to trying to
get what I need to out of this and build
my game and hopefully put my hand up to get
back in that black jersey.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
How humbling is it coming back to to your own
NPC team though? Does that sort of reconnect you with
with I guess you know, pride of rugby and what
it's all about. Does it have some benefits being able
to reconnect back with you at your union.

Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, it's awesome. I love it. I love playing for Tessman,
I love love.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
Living up here Nelson. We've got an awesome group of
group of players as in management and the community gets
right behind us. So I've loved every minute of being
back here. And I never take putting that tearsman Judy
on for granted. So it's been awesome.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, great, and just overall your rugby year its obviously
had some some special moments as well with super rugby
success as well. Over all twenty twenty four, you feel
like you've got some good momentum, especially into a big
game like this tonight.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
Yeah, I guess.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
So it's been I guess a bit of a soft
start yea for me, but yeah, looking to go out
this weekend and hopefully the boys can put on a
good performance.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Nice and they, Hey, well appreciate you chatting to us
here on news Talks. The'b all the best with possible
first time for Tantsman lifting the shield later on tonight,
So I go well for thank thanks for chatting.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
Mate, awesome, thank you. Cheers.
