Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Wildegrave from News Talk SEDB seven forty three.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
All on and fine today, as we look to the
last round of the Brian Green Probably Group New Zealand
Rally Championship of the International Rally of Fuday, Hayden Padden,
who's picked up a number of titles, count them seven
times national champion.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Well he's fighting with Ben Hunt. Ben's looking to win
his third New Zealand Rally Championship title.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
What happened, Well, it was over in Europe winning the
European title for the second consecutive year was Hayden Padden,
which means it opened the door for Ben Hunt because
he simply wasn't at the penultimate rally was Hayden Padden.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
So there was so much on this.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Hayden, welcome to the show, like you haven't won yet,
but you've got to be enthusiastic right about this showdown
with Ben Hunt.

Speaker 5 (01:02):
Obviously he's gonna well, it's always nice to return to
a favorite rally. There's a lot of fond memories, but
championship wise we're probably a little bit on the back
foot and in the respect that it's more than being
tender now. But you know, we're just going to go
out and do the best job we can and troal
whin the rallies the first thing.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
So numbers wise, what do you have to do? Where
does he have to finish and you have to finish
to secure that championship? Do you even indulge in that
kind of prediction?

Speaker 5 (01:25):
Oh, not so much when it's not really in our controls.
So if we troll win the rally, which is the
one thing we can try and control, then of been
so you can hear win the championship, or if people
when finishes third will win the championship. So it's more
reliant on being and others. So that's why, you know,
we just got to go out and do our own
thing and you know, obviously enjoy the rally as well.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Where are the other threats come from? From what you've
seen and what you know across the championship, Like as
far as maybe challenging for this rally win itself.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
Oh, you can never count anyone out, especially over these
two day rallies. So here was a bit more attrition.
And you know we've done this rally in November, so
you know the conditions on tires and cars. So there's
a few other parameters that we're not used to, but
you can't really have anyone with it. Emma, You've got
Ziel who's been doing a really good job. There's a
non championship contenderc here like Mike Younger, Jack Hawksword as well,

(02:16):
amongst others such as Robbie. So yeah, there's quite a
few drivers within the top ten who I'm sure will
be fast.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Expecting conditions wise, what are you looking at? What makes
it so different from the timing it's been running.

Speaker 5 (02:28):
Yeah, we normally we do this really in May, so
you're sort of going into that winter time where you
know the road conditions are a little bit more damp
and a little bit cooler. So now they're very they're
a lot more braceive, a lot harder, so we can
expect a lot more tire We're trying to find a
right tire strategy, and even choosing right tires will probably
be more key this weekend than what normally are.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
So what are you going there with your expectation wise?
What do you have to carry? How much Rubbert have
you got? What can you use? Just talk us through
the parameters.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
There Hayden, You we'll just give two compounds of choose
from with the control tie and the championship. So we've
got a medium in a soft and this is a
new control tie that everyone's using this year. So what
you want to richestered in the championships using So we've
never actually used it in conditions like this. So there's
an element of I guess adventure that we're all going
to go through to work out what doesn't doesn't work.
And you know you probably have to go a little

(03:17):
bit on the safe side to begin with in terms
of a safer option, which could be a harder compound tire,
but obviously you lose performance, but you need to make
sure you've got rubber on the tire for the whole
loop to to ensure that you've got the service.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Is it safe?

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Hayd and Patten to save recent times, you've become a
slightly safer, rarely driver understanding the ramifications of what you
do and where your championship may sit across a number
of course the European Championship Minister cap it again, well
done on that, but do you think maybe you're a
little less I'm going to win as fast as I
possibly can than.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
You used to be.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
I don't think safer, I think without blowing smoke, hopefully smarter.
Hopefully you've learned a few lessons from over the years
of things that did didn't work, and from that you said,
they learned to take a pill and relax in times
where maybe in the past you might have got a
bit stressed out or or you know, in this case
is and we know it's sort of not in our control.
So therefore there's no point us worrying about a little

(04:10):
stressing about it. We've just got to go out and
enjoy it. So yeah, I think there's an element of
wisdom that hopefully comes in. And you know, the sport's
always been big on experience. You know, we see that,
you know, even like the Sebastian Lobe or any any
of those guys in their forties, you know, rally, and
you can still compete at high level once you start
getting a bit older because of that experience factor.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
Who's running shotgun with you?

Speaker 5 (04:31):
We got young Jared in the car this weekend, so
he's been doing the whole New Zealand Championship with us
and continuing to grow. So he's doing a great job
and no doubt John's probably sitting back at home on
the venue to having a glass of wine and relaxing
for a change.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Only a glass. I challenge you on that one.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
As far as being one of your favorite rallies, what
particularly do you love about fang a A What does
it for you?

Speaker 5 (04:51):
I think here it's the camber, you know, these are
some iconic stages from Rally New Zealand days, and up
here you just got so much canber in the road
and you're literally jumping from corner to the corner. It's
pretty much as close to dancing as you can get
in a car. So it's pretty be sure when unique
up here at anywhere else we go, and.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
For the rest of the year, if you got any
plans at all around driving.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
We'll potentially got one more event in Europe that we're
just going to go back for a bit of an
invitational event, but other than that, this will be the
last I guess proper championship event of the season. It's
been a pretty long season, I must say, so it'll
be good to get this one done and then press
the reset button and rebuild in terms of yourself and
the cars and the team and get ready for twenty five.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
So in twenty five, what are you targeting?

Speaker 5 (05:36):
That's a million dollar questions. At the moment, we're not
quite sure. We're looking at what programs we can put together.
Probably fixing a bit more close at the home next year,
so maybe New Zealand, Australia, the European Championships. We've obviously
sort of took that box two years in a row house,
so looking for the next challenge, and you were just
sort of working through all those options at the moment.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Get amongst Hayden a patern challenging for the title. It's
going to be a great fight with Ben Hunt has
already picked up a couple of titles himself. Right in
the Hyundai in New Zealand a twenty rally two and
we enjoy your camp as always, Hayden, get in there
and make it count, but be safe ish.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
I appreciate it, Thanks Darcy, and thank you Hayden Padden.
It was the first round that I missed out, sorry,
not the penultimate.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Round, and that's why Ben Hunt might take the lead.
You can watch the event on YouTube as a live stream.
