Waldegrave from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're talking football on the program. Got some BMX action
coming up soon as well. Elliott Smith caught up with
Peter Laco. Will play that interview for you. And the
All Star panel is mister Gifford and mister Allison. But
up here and up now, it's the vice captain of
Auckland FC from the A League. They take on Sidney
f C. Jake Bremert joins us. Jake, Welcome to the show.
(00:36):
So how do you how do you prepare for a game,
this seecond game in after after all the hype around
last week and welcome.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Thank you very much for having me. Firstly, I think
it's just like any game.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
You know, we've prepared, We've had a tough preseason and
and like you say, we showed on the weekend just
gone that that we're capable of.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Doing anything and achieving anything this year.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
And you know we've prepared all week for Sydney and
now it's executing that in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
So we're all prepared and we can't wait.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
So how did you overcome the new nerves? I suppose
for the first up game. It's a massive crowd there.
People absolutely buying for blood. They were all died out
and they're blue and black. That's a lot to carry
into an opening match.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Surely, Yeah, no, it definitely is.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
But you know, I tend to go back to the
basics of why I started football, and that's the love
of the game and what you did growing up. And
for me, it's you know, going out there and doing
what you've done at such a young age and then
trying to ignore the crowd as much as possible. And
you know when I say ignoring the crowd, I mean
just try, you know, zone them out.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
But also there are twelfth Man on the weekend.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
I can't speak highly enough of the support and the
crowd that we had, and yeah, they helped us through
through every minute of that game. And you know, you're
looking into Sydney tomorrow. We're excited, we can't wait, and
you know, we just want to get the job done again.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
How's Vice Captaincy treating you. It's a nice port to
be loaded on you before the start of the season.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Yeah, look, I love it.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I've always seen myself as a leader and someone that
people look up to, so you know, I was on
it to get that responsibility and I'll take that on
the chin, and you know, I look to help everyone
that asks for help. But I'll also you know, set
a standard at the club that people look up to
and you know, in order to be successful, I hope
I can you.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Know, bring that out and guide and bring people along
with me.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, come with great expectations. With what you've won and
how you've performed. This is just part and parcelt of
what you do. You don't tend to carry that too much.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Look, not really, No, I'd say maybe the game just
go on and got a bit to me.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
I probably didn't get into the game as much as
I wanted to.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
There's a few sloppy passes, but I've also you know,
took that on the chin.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
And I haven't had the greatest preseason.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
I've been injured for the majority of it, and for
me it's finy minutes. But obviously the expectation is that
I do perform, and I'm sure that's to come, and
it will come sooner rather than later.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Well of Auckland City got for as dear thing they've
been lying in wait looking at this very pleased. I'm
sure to you back in New Zealand at least he's
not playing in Wellington. But what do they bring? What
have they got?
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Yeah, look they've got you know, you look at their
front six and they're arguably, you know, the top front
six in the league. But I think in order, you know,
you can have a team full of good players, but
it's it's you know, it comes down to as a
team and as a collective. You know, when things aren't great,
do those players step up? Obviously they're very good individuals.
(03:26):
But I think when you look at our performance on
the weekend and you know, there was a lot of
nervous players, We had a lot of players. We didn't
probably play the best that we know we can play.
But you know, good teams win championships and they don't
play well. And I think that's something that we can
we can really unite together and bring into the into
the year.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
If you lose Jake, they'll turn on the coach. That's
what normally happens. So well, what's Courrika been offering up
this week? What's his message been.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Is trusting the process.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
I think every single game, you know, us as players,
we we look up to him, you know, he's he's
a very successful, successful coach, but also as a player,
you know. So we've taken that on board and I
think I speak for myself, but I also speak to
the team that we trust the process, we trust the
way he.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Wants to play.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
And if we do that and we take that on
board as a team, then again I think, you know,
we can do something really special this year.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
A lot of pressure to get off to a great start.
And I've talked to other players who are involved in
previous aucklanfranchises, the Kings and the Knights sloppy starts did
in aug well do you feel that?
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Of course, you ask any team in the league, they
want to start well. I think it's a given in
the game we play in football that you know, it's
a fresh season, everyone wants to start well. But I
think we've done that, yes, And the scary thing for
us is that we know.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
We didn't perform to what we know we can perform too.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
So for me, it's taking that on the chin, looking
at the clips and the videos post match and having
a review and looking at what areas we can be
better and then executing that in the next game plan.
But you know, not every game you are going to
play well when it's the results that when you don't
play well, when you still manage to get a win,
is what should be exciting for everyone.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And Jake Bremmer talking about pressure, Steve Karaka is welcoming
the team over that well, his former club. That's quite
a hurdle to jump as well for Steve, but it
appears to be a pretty cool customer to me, not
bothering too much about this.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Look, I'm as in for me playing Sydney's you know,
you look at Sydney's history, they were one of the
you know, the benchmarks of the league. So for us,
it's it's an opportunity to show where we can fit
into the league, you know what I mean. So for us,
we're ready, We're ready to go when you know, hopefully
tomorrow that we get the result and that's it.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
But Steve has referenced much about being part of a
key part of Sydney if ce for so long does
he does he take that on board?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Of course, yeah, of course he does. But I assure
you right now he wants to beat them. I can
tell you that right.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Now, not doing them any favors, and that's what we
like to hear. Looking forward to a four o'clock go
Media State WI tomorrow, the second game in for Auckland
f C and the vice captain Jake Bremmer. You thank
you very much for your time getting there.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
