The Black Ferns are determined to tidy up their discipline in a bid to avoid back-to-back defeats to Canada in Christchurch.

The two teams meet again this afternoon at the same venue of Canada's only ever win over New Zealand in women's rugby.

The Black Ferns gave away 15 penalties in last week's win over Australia.

Liana Mikaele-Tu'u joined D'Arcy Waldegrave to preview the clash.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks' b eight nineteen.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
On the All Sport Breakfast, let's talk a bit of
Black Ferns Canada. The Pack four series second weekend is
underway and we're joined now by Leana mchli to talk
about that game. More thing night.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Hello, Hi everyone.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Thanks very much for joining us on the Well, it's
the morning of what is a massive test. Have you
got revenge on your mind because you were at number eight?
Weren't you last year when the Canadians rolled you at
the same venue.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, I was in that game. Yeah. I think this
week we just want to go out and just go
hard right from the first minute. We've obviously got a
lot of new players in our team, so I think
it's just being able to form most combos and just yeah,
kind of put the if that we have out there
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
When you watched last week and you broke the game
down yourself, were the areas you think think you could
help improve the performance. And it was a good performance,
but you can always do better, right, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
I definitely think our fatality was one of the best
parts of our game and I think for me personally,
that's where I kind of add value too. So I think,
especially for this game, we'll want to continue that. And
I think just I think it's just being able to
reach our strength, So being able to keep the ball
and just go hard with that.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
I reckon, Yeah, and why not? And it's well, it's
all about going hard, isn't it. I mean, if you've
had a hell of a year, well, you were a
bit put out when you didn't get to start last week.
You didn't get that jersey? Did you get that? Hold on?
That's mine, that's my jersey. You played sex as well,
don't you?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
So I didn't really see it. I don't own the jersey.
But yeah, obviously every week is a week to serve
this team, and so whether I'm playing or not, that
was my focus last week. And now I've been given
the opportunity so I'm able to serve the team on field,
which is really important. I'm ready to go.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Yeah, it's going to talk about your year playing for
the Blues and what you achieved for that franchise, especially
the end when you took on the neighbors and managed
to beat them as well in atrocious condition. So you're
feeling pretty good about the rhythm that you're built through.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, I think coming off the back of a really
successful Opicky it's been really good to see the growth
in the game. And like I believe, we have the
best players in New Zealand and in our team, so
to be able to play alongside them and train with them,
I think it's been really good for everyone individually to
grow their game. It definitely has been for me because

(02:45):
I know that I'm playing with the best loose forwards
in the world. So yeah, coming off the back of
a really great Opacky season, I think everyone wants to
just transfer that to international rugby.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
You can smell the world cut right, you must do.
It's only just around the corner. I know you can't
really focus too far are You've got the pack for
to deal with. But that collective energy around the defense
or the re winning of the World Cup house that
aman is it hard to suppress.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
I think everyone has it in the back of their minds.
But for us, we're just taking it game by game
and we're growing every week. So yeah, we just want
to be able to build combos and breed I guess
world class players. So then by the time that we
do come against harder teams, then we'll be ready for that.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I guess no promises from the coaching staff around who's
actually going to get the World Cup positions or pretty
much even standings I'd expect maybe there's a couple of
rock stars who roll straight through like I do, Hey,
for example, But do you feel that you've all got
an equal chance to actually make that team to the
World Cup?

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, I think everyone. I think everyone is on the
same level. It's bloody challenging during our tests, during our
training weeks, and I think that's good for us. Everyone
wants to challenge each other and bring the best out
of each other, so everyone's competing. I think it's really
good for our team.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
What about the return, you know how I'm talking about.
Don't need to give her one name, even though she's
got several, but how good is it for her to
come back and play again? A lot we thought we'd
lost at a league. Suddenly it's like, you know what,
I'm coming back and man, Porsche, how good?

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Yeah? She is such a lovely person. I think if
as a teammate, she adds so much value to our
team with her experience. So yeah, I just hope that
she plays free this weekend, and we all know what
she can do, so I think if she's able to
play with the clear mind and play free, then you'll
be able to see that easily from the first minute
this weekend.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Going back, you up that one hundred percent. She is lovely,
but to be fair, I've met a black Fern who
I thought was horrid, so it's obviously something that it
runs through the whole team and that Leona MIKAELI, thank
you so much for joining us, play play hard, play well.
Looking forward to you playing the house down and getting
some revenge on Canada. Huh.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Thank you so much. Thank you for your time.
