Wellington Firebirds all-rounder Logan van Beek joined Hamish McKay to chat about being 11 wickets away from becoming the all-time Super Smash wicket taker ahead of today's 4:25pm game between Wellington and Central Districts.

The record is currently held by ex-Cricket player Andrew Ellis who retired from his 18-year career in 2020.

"I'll be giving him a message if I do overtake him because he was, he was my, you know, my mentor back in the Canterbury days," van Beek said.

John a twenty All Sports Breakfast on News Talk zed B.

(00:40):
Hamish mcguy with you on your Saturday morning time to
talk super Smash, a cricket jeseus. But going on in
the old cricketing world at the moment, isn't it interesting
times across there at the MCG. But my MCG is
for Servit Park in Parnas to North Place, very dear
to me. Great part of the world there right down

(01:01):
by the you know, by the Ledo Swimming complex, the
Mona would too river, a great part of the world.
Wellington Firebergs taking on the Central Stags there today. Logan
bean Beaker's back from injury for Wellington. Logan joins us now,
good morning.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Logan, good morning, Merry Christmas.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yes, Merry Christmas to you. How you're feeling because you're
coming back from injury, rearing to go, no doubt.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
I am, indeed. Yeah, it was a Yorker and a
Warmer game at the start of the season that has
put me out for six to eight weeks or about
eight weeks now, and yeah, I was actually ready to go.
I controlled myself on Christmas Day to make sure that
I'm right and ready for today.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
When you say, a Yorker, are you able to sort
of talk us through what happened next? From the Yorker?
Was there anything sort of under ward in terms of
your injury.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Well, no, it's just like I've been helling the toe
a number of times, and as well being a bowler,
you know your left toe is normally pretty sore. Anyway,
the nail was completely gone or dead. I don't think
we see that again, but it's yeah, it was just
more of the next the next maxim that I plays,
and I went to bowl my first ball and I

(02:15):
bowled at first ball and I went, well, okay, hold on,
that's not quite right. And then I bowled the sickond
and then I end up bowling kind of three or
four overs, and I said to the captain the Kelly,
I said, look, neck, I'm actually not feeling too good here.
If you don't need me, I might just chill. And
then we took two quick wickets and then suddenly he's
a can you can you bowl again? I was like,
all right, I'll try it, but it just never got right.

(02:37):
And for the next year for the next eight weeks
I was on Devin Conways scooter around town and Wellington
and and the moon boots and thankfully the time has
passed and I'm back on the park.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Well, it's amazing, Hayes. Well, they're not small, but in
terms of your overall anatomy, it to is not you know,
but they are reasonably important, aren't they. You find that
out quite quickly, don't you when they when they go
bang on you.

Speaker 3 (03:01):
Well exactly because I'm you know, you're on your feet
and it's it's amazing. It's like anything. Once he break something,
you you then know, okay, well I actually need this
in everyday life and so yeah, to start it's the
end of my body, the lift toe and it's the
start of everything. So it's yeah, it's it's quite important.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Right Central Stags today for tur But Park. What do
you know about the Stags? What do you what do
you need to do to beat them? And what are
you expecting from that wicket? And Palmerston North.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Yeah, Central Stags reigning champions. They are a slick units.
They've they've got the likes of Brett Randall back in
an action. He's been injured for a number of months
as well with his old shoulder. But you know, Will Young,
Dank Cleaver, Josh Clarkston, a couple of young guys and

(03:56):
Will Clark and Curtis Heathy, you know very and obviously
Foxcroft as well. So the guys that have been around
the trash for a while now there were missing, you know,
two of their best players and Tom Bruce and Lea Techner.
So but they're still you know, form formidable squad. Passing

(04:17):
North has been generous to us in the last few years.
We've we've we've driven up here and and done pretty
well the last four or five years. So we we
do like the park and I'm very excited with our squad.
We've got Blundle back into the team. Tim Robinson, who's
you know, been lying in the this year for the

(04:37):
New Zealand. You've got n Kelly who's on the cusps
of of kind of really breaking into that black cap side.
And then you've got the stalwarter of you know, Peter
young husband coming in and I'm very excited for a
debutante and Yaya zeb who's who can bowl quick and
he's is ready to go.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Fantastic, great opportunity for the good fight of the matter
or two to get along and see some quality cricketers,
some who've are proven and some on the rise as
well as that logan, you know, so it could be
a really enjoyable day out.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
It is. I think the weather is clearing, which is
the first of all the main thing, but it's you know,
I saw a less of a boxing day. There was
about I think there was about ten professional cricket games
going on. Obviously the MCG, but you had Dubai, you
had South Africa, You've got here in New Zealand. So
there's there's cricket everywhere on the TV, but you know,

(05:31):
not often the cricket's just down the road. So you know,
I've got some family coming who live in the area,
which is fantastic. And so definitely the sun comes out.
I think it's going to be really decent temperature, so
it's a great viewing area as well. Yeah, but you know,
there's plenty of boundaries and it's a great, great venue.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
It is superb. Now a couple of other things. You've
got the World T twenties coming up with the Dutch team.
You're all on target for.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
That, yes, Yeah, So February is the TEA twenty World Cup.
We've got Pakistan in our first game Sri Lanka. Then
we have USA and Delhi and then Namibia and Chennai
and then a little team called NBA and Amanabad as
that's our Paul And no, it's been it's been great.
We've we've had zooms pretty much every every every week.

(06:21):
We've done little kind of team events as best you can,
trying to stay connected. And yeah, it's just as I'm
very lucky to have that opportunity to represent the Dutch
and to be another World Cup in India. It's you know,
that's the mecha of cricker at the moment. So and
to be able to play them again, I've got a

(06:42):
little bit of you know, being a bonnet. Last time
I played them and bang Lore didn't quite go to
plan in terms of my personal day. But you know,
it's a huge private privilege to be able to go
and represent them, and so I'm very excited and it's
a great lead in both playing the Super Smash and
then flowing on to the to the World Cup.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, fantastic. Another thing, do do you follow your own achievement?
It's closely because you're what you're only eleven wickets away
from being what an all time record holder in the
T twenty bowling steaks.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Yeah, no, it's it's I think one thing about cricket
is that, you know, because we are judged on stats,
a lot of the times you kind of do follow it.
But there's a couple of us who you know, Jacob
Duffy's up there, Scott Cougar lines up there, Lead Tickner
is up there. So we've kind of all been the
guys that have has been kind of a domestic battlers

(07:36):
for a long time. And so obviously Jacob is now
taking that step forward and breaking records of his own
lead taking. His resurgence has been fantastic. And then and
Scott Coogelining is still as potent as ever. So pretty
cool to be close to Andrew Ellis's record, and you
know he is hoping I can put in a couple

(07:58):
of good performances to overtake him. I know that I'll
be giving him a message if I do overtake him,
because he was he was my you know, my mentor
back in the cannery days. He was an all around
there and you know I watched I played with him
a lot for seven years and he guided me throughout
those years. You know, he was on me making sure

(08:20):
that I did all the right things, and at times
I didn't think he liked me, but you know, eventually
we grew a good friendship. So I'm hoping I can
do him this season, and yeah, I'll send him a
special text.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Fantastic. There we go. That is Logan van Beeek playing
for the Wellington Firebirds today against Central District Stags at
for Turbot Park and Palmerston North good Folk for the
matter or two or lower Hawk's Bay up a wider wrapper,
Get over the new track, get over there, watch that.
It'll be outstanding. Good to chat to Logan, the good
young man. Plenty of cricket action happening. Just thought i'd

(08:55):
mentioned Curtis Hefey who he mentioned there. He is a
features on a very good podcast called Under the Grandstand
along with Ruben Love as well. If you wanted to
check that out.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
Just thought it.

Speaker 2 (09:06):

going to have our all star panel. Check out all
the headlines as well. Of course here on your All
