Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
So let's talk Netbulls, A and Z Premiership now and
isn't it nice when we get to the final round
robin weekend before the playoffs and there's still so much
to play for? Obviously, the Mystics and Tactics at the
top of the table, separated by just two points. The
Mystics ahead will do battle for entry straight into the
Grand Final, not having to play the two verse three eliminator.
Their game is tomorrow afternoon and the Central Pulse out
(00:34):
of Wellington head up to tott On today to meet
the Magic and it's pretty simple for the Pulse win
and they are through as the third ranked team lose
and there's a chance that the Steal if they beat
the Stars on Monday night, which you'd say is probably
quite likely, the Steel would surpass the Pulse if the
Pulse lose and the Steel wins, so so much to
play for all across the last few games. We're going
(00:56):
to go to the Central Pulse camp ahead of that
game against the Magic and tit on it today and
mid quarter Maddy Gordon is with us morning to you
and Maddie. I guess it must be nice just having
the situation pretty clear. Oh, yeah, win and you're through.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, I guess it is a nice feeling to know
that as we win, we go through. But again, that's
a lot to take on our shoulders. I guess it
is a must win game and we don't want to
have to rely on like not winning and looking at
those points and that kind of stuff. So yeah, obviously
our mindset is going to win.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Momentum's always been talked about, is a good thing at
this point of the season, and you're on the back
of a couple of pleasing and satisfying wins the last
couple of weeks, do you feel the team's in a
good space to head up to todung Er and have
a successful afternoon today.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
Yeah, we definitely are in a good space. And obviously
these last couple of wind have been without a full
strength team, so it has been cool to see that
we have that depth. And I've been like just so
proud of all the girls who have come on because
they've been training so hard and for them to get
that opportunity on the court to show what they can
do has been awesome. So yeah, I feel like even
you know, usually it's just the starting seven who go
(02:01):
out there every week and play, but it's been so
cool to have the whole team, which is, yeah, given
us good confidence. Then win again this weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
And how much of a confidence boost was I getting
that nine point win over the Tactics a couple of
weeks ago. They've been a standout team and for you
it was obviously considered a season defining game in many respects.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
Yeah, I think that was a big confidence boost for us.
Obviously we'd lost a couple of games before that, and
I think it's just they kind of brought us back
knowing that we can beat those kind of teams like
they've been playing so consistently the whole season. And I
know we've been a bit up and down, but I
think once we get our stuff sorted, we know we're
kind of unbeatable. You know, if everyone's on and everyone's firing,
(02:43):
we're quite a hard team to stop. So yeah, it's
definitely brought some confidence going into this weekend.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Paris Mason's freak injury last week it did look pretty worrying,
but good to hear she's on the mend. And I
guess you'll be wanting to play for her today, given
she's been such a big part of the campaign to date.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Yeah, definitely. I think we obviously played last week's game
when she came off for her, so it was nice
to get that win for her. And obviously, yeah, she's
slowly getting there. You know, she'll be back hopefully very soon.
Luckily that it was nothing too too serious, which yeah,
she's very very lucky, and of course where I'm all
rallying around her, we'll definitely win for her as well.
(03:20):
But I think just as the whole team and the
whole franchise itself, we really want to get into those playoffs.
So yet for everyone really, I guess.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Yeah, And you mentioned Maddy.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Those injuries, it's caused another reshuffle and you've had a
bit more time back at wing attack now a move
back there for you and combining with Ossie veteran Gabby
Simpson at center.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
How that'll been.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, I know it's taking me back to twenty twenty actually,
but no, I really enjoyed it. I've had a couple
of questions about it and how I'm finding it, but yeah,
I think it's actually kind of worn't in my favor
in a way. I felt like I was in a
bit of a rut this season, trying to, you know,
play to how I know I can play, and I
feel like wing attacks really brought that out of me,
(04:01):
which has been really fine. And Gabby just lotting and center,
it's been awesome. I think we've grown quite a good
combination in there. And she's quite funny. She's just like
Madyhu do everything and I'll just sell. So it's been
quite Yeah, it's been quite nice.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
And what do you expect from the Magic?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
I mean, they've copsed some pretty tough losses this year,
including by yourselves way back in Round one. It will
be their last game of the year, so what kind
of matchup do you expect it to be and the
challenge that they'll pose on their home court and Titia.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Oh, it's going to be huge.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
I think.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
I just saw on social media that it's a sellout.
It's their last game, they have nothing to lose. And
I also saw that one of their players, Georgia Tong,
is just retired, so I think they're definitely going to
go out there strong for her. You know, it's her
last game and they'll want to put on a great
game for her, So definitely not taking them lately. You know,
even though they've had a big couple of losses, they've
(04:52):
got nothing to lose and they'll just go out there
and play for each other in front of her home crowd.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
And I spoke to your coach Anna last week.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
You mentioned that the physical toll the season seems to
have had on a lot of players.
Speaker 4 (05:02):
It's been quite intense.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
If you found the tension out there on court, you know,
stronger than usual. And I guess given it's a shorter
season this year, has that made it all the more competitive.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Yeah, it definitely has been quite physical out there, but hey,
that's netball. But yeah, the shortest season, I think obviously
you don't have enough, Like losses are actually quite big
in this kind of season we're having as you don't
get to play each other often. So yeah, I think
that's just made people go up there even more hungrier,
(05:31):
you know, like most games and must win games because
it's such a short season. So yeah, it's definitely brought
out some good games. But yeah, heyble's netbull. I don't
really mind a bit of shove and push here and there.
It just shows people want to win. It's their competitive side.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
And just finally, Maddie, Finals Netball coming up next week
and obviously you're aiming to be there. The Pulse have
been incredibly close to lifting the championship over the last
couple of seasons, some tight losses.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
How determined is everyone to go all the way this year?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah? Definitely. I think what was it, twenty two we
lost the elimination final by one and the last year
we lost the final by one, So our playoff in
the last couple of years haven't been the best, but hey,
I think that just makes us a bit more hungry.
And both of them have only been by one, so
we know we can definitely stay in the fight and
put up a good contest. So yeah, it's just obviously
(06:24):
winning this game and getting there and showing everyone what
we can do.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Awesome, Maddie, will all the very best with the trip
up to Titannger in the final rounds today.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Thanks for your time here on NEWSTALGSZB.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Awesome, Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
Cheers Maddie.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Gordon Midcarner for the central pole sounder called silver Ferns too,
So yes, magic hosting the poles up in Titonger and
at well about four o'clock this afternoon and then the
big one though to the side you know, top seeding
and the team that will go straight into the final,
the Mystics hosting the Tactics at Auckland tomorrow afternoon at
four o'clock, Big final rounds of the A and Z Premiership.
