Black Ferns lock Maia Roos has full confidence in Blues teammate Ruahei Demant to steer the ship at first-five in this afternoon's Pacific Four opener against Australia in Newcastle.

Demant has the ability to play between fly-half and second-five, appearing in the latter position for the Blues in Super Rugby Aupiki.

Roos says the team needs a reliable playmaker to lead a stacked backline.

Kick off is at 5pm - LIVE coverage on Gold Sport.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk z'b.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Indeed it is I am and we have with us
now Mike Ivoncota, Lani Ruz. Good morning, Maya Warning, big day,
huge day. Obviously you're playing for the Black Ferns at
the start of the build up toward the World Cup.
But you're celebrating thirty caps. That's no mean feat.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Pretty special obviously, ever the time, an opportunity to put
on a black jersey is special, but to run out
for my thirties today is pretty exciting. There's on their
handful of women that have been able to reach this
Mars Stone and so to be part of that group,
phys's cool.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
So longevity, what do you put it down to? And
you think particularly you think it's kept you right at
the point at end.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Happy, body, consistency and yeah, putting my best foot forward
has helped a lot.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, how have you improved since your first selection? Because
it is it You've got to be consistent, but you've
got a constantly bill. Where do you think your biggest
advance has been in what you provide on the park?

Speaker 3 (01:13):
I think my physicality recently I've got a bit bigger,
a bit stronger my game like Q as well, and
so just to be able to hold my weight and
earn my role as a locke has helped me and
I think as well I've improved a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Primary focus for what happens this afternoon, this s evening
New Zealand time, when you take on the Australians the Wallaroos.
What has Bunting been kind of pointing you towards.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
We just want to play how we've been training. We've
been training really well and we've been focusing on the
legacy that Lawyer Riley. This is a Lawyer Rilly match,
so he's been such a he's paid such an amazing
path for a woman, drove me in New Zealand. Is
that we kind of just want to play how he

(02:00):
coached and that was with courage and yeah, we just
want to put our best foot forward because this is
of see the first game of the year in a
World Cup year, so just to see our connections and
how we grow on the field will be the main
pointers attack.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
It was a couple of weeks back, but how much
good energy do you take out of that victory over
the Waratahs? And the Super Rugby Women's I don't remember
the exact name of it, but it was a It
was a barn burner in the most horrible conditions. Ever,
does that help you Blues players bring anything or is
it too far ago?

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Obviously it is a new group. It's lucky but on
the outside so we are thinking about that game, but nah.
But yeah, being able to have a taste of what
was showing then Rugby brought to us in that game
has obviously helped us prepare for this game as well.
We know that they have quite a few girls who

(02:55):
are in the war Tire setup in Walla Arue, and
so it'll be really good to match up against them
again and see what the national side has compared to
our national side.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Have they lifting? Why is he seeing improvements in the
women's game?

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Yeah? I think so it was the past few years.
I think everyone's kind of accelerated their game. But it's
just the resource film I think in the Aussie woman's game.
I don't know how that's going over here, but that's
how you grow better Rosie players by having the resources.
And there's are two times we've seen that they're a
bit lacking in that arena.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
It's pretty simple. We've seen the mats across a number
of different sports for the women's game. Resource them properly
and you'll get the results that that's in rugby, that's
in cricket specifically, which is great to see. Hey, you'll
celebrate number thirty. And then you've got Barrexton Sorenson McGhee.

(03:50):
Debuting after what was a phenomenal season. How's her head
space building towards what is something she's probably aimed at
for quite some time?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Sees she has not changed since they'll trained the same
the same chilling, the same time to switch off and
so Yeah, she's so mature for her age, and I
think that just shows in her prep and she's excited
that her family is coming over to watch. I have
full trust that she'll just play how she plays and

(04:22):
be free out there on the field tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Forget everything you know and just let go play right,
get out there and do what you do best. Yeah.
Interesting positional change for demand. She's coming in a position
and team and does that sit with the rest of
the team because you've been playing twelve pretty much all year?

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah. I back Lou as a game driver all day,
every day. And so I think just for the amount
of depth and the amount of superstars in our back line,
I think that at the temposition she'll be able to
unleash that with her game. I you, she drives the
forwards really well. And yeah, I back the decision and

(05:02):
I'm excited to have her at ten big.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Start for the World Cup. The defense or trying to
regain it again, I'm not. I don't know what your
attitude is. Just did you do you feel that coming
through with the with the athletes, now that you've come
together as a unit, that there is a mission. We
know what the end goal is.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
We keep we're focusing on this game first, but we
know that it's all to build towards the end goal
of winning the World Cup. Again.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Happy thirtieth, good luck, go well out there up against
are we there? Shouting from the rooftops, Mike Anna Calony Ruse,
thank you so much for your time.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
You go well, Thank you, see Leter, thank you.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
That's the week. Whoo in the background. I think it's
because I didn't make a mess of a name more
than anything. Mike Havana Calony roos there.
