Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
And the Chatham carp rolls on. It's merry old Way
and it's getting title. It's getting down to the pointed
end Round four. There are sixteen teams remaining, and one
of those sixteen teams plays this afternoon, and we're joined
by Auckland City FC's stand in skipper. His name is
Mario Elitch. Mario, welcome to the program. She's getting pointed now.

(00:34):
Now you're telling me beforehand that you got knocked out
in this round this time last year. Have you got
the fear?

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, how's it going? Thanks for having me.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
Yeah, Obviously last time last year round we fell shorter
than expected. To be honest, we obviously won it the
year before prior, so we had high aspirations of going
to do it again. That wasn't the case last year.
Slipped up to Western Springs in an extra time goal,
which yeah, we're pretty disappointed, to be honest.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
So we're hoping to yeah, make.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
Up for the last year's short short spell. I should
say in the Channem Cup.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Sorry you said slipped up, but did you slip up
or did you just keep beating by a better team.

Speaker 4 (01:18):
No, I think I would say slipped up because we
were in control. We were winning two to one was
about ten minutes ago, and then leaked one leaked actually
in a good goal for you play to them. So yeah,
I think we've learned from those listens last year and
wanting to go further this year, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So you've got a Cambridge Football Club att club. It's
at John Kirkoff Park. One kicks off at one o'clock.
What did Cambridge bring to the exchange.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Yeah, it's going to be an interesting now game. To
be fair, we don't know too much about them. I'm
sure the coaches and stuff are doing their homework on
their games and stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I know they're doing quite well in their league.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
So yeah, it's just one of those games you don't
really know where you're going to get so much.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
So yeah, no, we're going to go down there.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
With full full squad and a full expectation of it
that it's going to be a tough at all. It
doesn't really matter who you get in the cup, to
be honest. I remember back in the day when I
was played for Century United, we slipped up to wide
a matter I think it was at the time.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
So anything can happen, they say the magic.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Of the Cup, so yeah, we'd have to be top
of our game today, so we wanted to, yeah, make
it to the next round.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
So look at what happened in your last fixture and
you just wriggled out of that one there as well.
Is there any lessons you can take from that game?

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Yeah, it was a midwek game, game of two half.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
I'll probably say we dominated the first half and then
sort of gave them a sloppy goal away and then
they sort of lift them and left them in the game,
gave them a snuff and they were.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, able to put pressure on us.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
We how strong got the three points, which was massive
in the league, but yeah, cup games totally different. I
think is if you want to make it easy for yourself,
so you put them to be it early. So hopefully
we can get a few chances early doors and make
it easy office for us out of the cup.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
So far, the big takeaways from what you've a cheated
than how you've gone about it. Are you starting to
find a bit more shape or a style that you're
happiest playing in or is that irrelevant when it comes
to a knockout competition?

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Mario, I think no, I don't think it's too irrelevant.
Like we sort of have a certain style that we
like to play and that's position based. Obviously every one
knows that by playing how well we've done with it
for the last few years. So yeah, we taken every
game as we can. Obviously, if teams press us higher
then you sometimes it makes it more difficult to be

(03:35):
able to do what you want to do with the ball.
So it's just about adapting to what what the oppostion brings.
So today's challenge against Cambridge, I'm sure they have a
few tricks up their sleeve and a plan in place,
so we just have to adapt with that. And we've
got a lot of experience in our team, so yeah,
we've I think we've got the callity to do do
so how.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Strong on the grand day? As far as the selection
of players, have you got pretty much a full deck
to pick from?

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Yeah, basically a full deck. I think.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
I think there's a few boys struggling with a few
but some bobs. But we've got a few new boys
into the squad, which was good obviously with a few
of the boys moving on to the new A League team,
So yeah, it's just about putting those new boys in
and they have adapted really well. So no, I think
we'll be full guns blazing tomorrow today.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
And you look at the future of the club and
I know you're you're pushing thirty now, so you do
have to look at the future. Being one of the
senior members of the side, does it all go well,
you've got a good you touched on the younger players before,
you've got a good next wave coming through. Do you
think that are already contributing Mario.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
Yeah, there's a few more gra show and on these days,
but no, there's a huge bunch of young boys and
who have been trained us for many years and they're
doing really well. And now I've seen the likes of
Adam Bell and example her Guina minutes now and lots
of those, So no, it's awesome to see that those
boys put on the years of graft, which I actually

(05:00):
did back in the day, and now you've played the minute.
So no, I think we're in good steat good a
bunch of experienced players there to guide those younger boys
to go on and if they have ambitions to go
further in the career, which example of Liam has done so.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
So No, I think we're in a great spot as
a club. Yeah, there's got.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
To be fresh energy around football when you look at
the amount of players that are signing professionally. Of course
we've got another Auckland football club getting underway soon and
you've got these younger players who are being picked up
by European clubs. This has got to give guys a
huge amount of hope, really piqued their interest that it's
just not about playing out in the backyard.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Absolutely.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
I think it really gives those younger boys who always
thought it was too hard here you know, a little
old New Zealand it's you know, we're too far away
from anything that it's not really going to be excuse anymore,
to be honest, because yeah, the likes of all those
boys who are going big, like a few Phoenix boys
going straight overseas like it's doable now. So yeah, basically

(06:02):
if you kind of want to, you can go and
do it now.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
You've got the platform.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
And yeah, I think it kind of comes down to
the mentality and if you want something really you can
go and do it now. So it's just about putting
all the eggs in the basket and going for it really, and.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
I think you guys should go for it this afternoon
when you take on Cambridge. John Kirkoff, Part number one
kickoff at one o'clock. We're down to the point at
end ish of the Grand Old Lady of New Zealand
sporting competitions, the Chatham Cup. Mario Ilich, Thanks for your time, mate,
travel safe play well.

Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah, no's true. Thanks mate.
