Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talks dB, the GJ. Gunnerhomes New Zealand's
most trusted home builders.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Talks Basketball is the focus of our program now twenty
one minutes after eight on a Saturday morning. The Breakers wobbled,
They didn't fall down. They stood back up again. Have
they got enough in the tank to get through and
be a significant force in finals basketball? Well, I don't know.
(00:37):
I wonder if our next guest does. His name is
Mitch McCarran, out of the Breakers.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Good morning, Good morning Darcy.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Thanks having me on and thanks for joining us. I
expect there's not a monkey off your back. It's a
gorilla after beating up on the type hands, it's a
that was a horrible run you went on. What is
the sense of relief like within the camp?
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Yeah, I think it's nice, and you know, not to
try to sugarcoat losses, but you know, we felt like
we were really close and at a few of those
games we were probably in a position to win and
we threw it away with our mistakes. And not to
discredit any other teams, we just felt like we mad.
We made the mistakes rather than they were forcing us
into mistakes. And obviously you can't do this do that
(01:21):
at this level, and we let a few slip. Otherwise
you know, it wouldn't have been such a big run.
So it feels nice to get a win. And now
our job is to try and string some together and
make a push for a final spot.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, I mean you do it in stages down you
stringing quarters together as a start, because you've had some
harringdous quarters and when you look back at just a
small amount of ball, knowing that cost you a game,
and how you stitch that back together? Is there an
easy fix? Is there a work that when you do
basically the backside drops out of it in such a
short amount of time.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
I think you just know that in this league unless
you're a high octane offense, which you know we're not,
and we're not trying to be a team that puts
one hundred and twenty points, you know, on a game
and play as fast as some of the other teams
in the league. So we do rely on executing a
little better in the half court and making sure that
we you know, get stops and obviously take care of
(02:13):
our offense.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
As well. So if you have a really poor quarter.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Where you're not switched on, you don't give yourself much
ground to make up in terms of play style and
shot attempts later, which is completely fine because you know,
as we saw on the weekend in the past game,
you know, Cans a high octane offense that like to
play fast and be aggressive and shoot early in the clock,
and we're able to frustrate them with our system, so
(02:36):
it can really work in our favor.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
We just have to execute.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Coach copin and under a bit of flack. I'm sure
pressure from probably internally more than anything else, I himself,
not from the team. What kind of tweaks has he made,
if any, during that run.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, I think we're just trying to find our way
to win.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
You know, I can't speak for the coaching staff, but
I imagine that. You know, obviously, integrating Taco into this
league is a challenge. We're lucky to have him because
he's it's a unique body and you know.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
He's seven foot six. At the end of the day,
he's a mismatch.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
It's just that this league hasn't seen that before, how
that's officiated, how other.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Teams guard him, you know, we had no idea.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
You know, it's not a prototype that we've seen before
in this league, so you know, it took us a
little while to get used to that. But I feel
like we have been getting better and we've been finding
him more often in better positions for him to just
catch and finish.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And it has taken a bit longer than than ideal,
but I think the.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Players have adjusted and we've gotten used to working with
him and when he's ready to catch the ball as well,
and we saw on the weekend, I don't know, I
think he finished with maybe twenty three and sixteen minutes
or something, you know, just just a huge mismatch when
we can take advantage of it.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Well, yeah, taking advantage And that interesting because you're right,
what is your third tallest player ever playing the NBA,
So he really is something quite extraordinary. But getting him
into position to feed him that ball the speed I
suppose that he gets into that, how long How do
you go about working that situation because you've got to
be so on sync with each other and he's been
part of the team now for a handful of games.
(04:10):
Do you think they's starting to fall in a place
people kind of know what their tendencies are.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Yeah, definitely, and we've got you know, I know this
is a cliche, you know, I don't want to say excuse,
but reason as to why we were maybe struggling to
execute early on.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
We just hadn't had a lot of practice time with Tarker.
You know, he was coming off injury.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
And this season doesn't slow down for anybody. You know,
we came out of fever break and we were traveling
a lot and playing a lot of games in quick succession,
and you know, you can't have these long, massive practices
when you're traveling and playing.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Back to back to back.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
So you know, we had a little bit of time
over the last few weeks to get some good weeks
under us and get used to him and him get
used to us and get used to our system completely.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
And I feel like we've had rewards from that.
Speaker 4 (04:55):
And again, you know, we see that in the Cans game,
where you know, we really knew exactly where to find him.
We ran our stuff pretty well, and defensively, you know,
we're a lot more on point as well in our
ca ridges. So again, we're just going to continue to
chip away at it, trying to expose that mismatch.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
It's not a one man game. As you well know,
this old team of players, the guys on the floor,
the guys on the bench as well. Where else have
you seen the lifts across the roster match.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
You know, Matt was obviously, Matt Mooney was great, you
know in the in the Cans game, especially, you know,
with Parker being out and who's you know, kind of
our instant offense and instant creator guy. You know, we
knew we needed some people to step up and be
a little bit more aggressive. And we're not asking anybody
to do abnormal stuff. We just want people to be aggressive,
(05:42):
shoot their shot with confidence, and you know, if you
have a drive, take it. If you have a shot,
take it. So Matt was ready and he knew he'd
have a bigger role or have the ball in his hands.
I suppose a bit more with Parker being down, So
you know, I was really happy with how he stepped
up on both ends of the floor and kind of
led us in that in that way. And you know,
he found Taco on a lot of those mismatches as well,
(06:04):
So I thought he played great.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Excuse my ignorance, but that was a bit of a
barnee that he got himself into. He's been punished. But
when do you get Parker Jackson back again?
Speaker 4 (06:14):
We will probably see Parker for the I think it's
Tasmania again.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I think that's the end of the five game suspension.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
We host Tasmania in Auckland, so I believe that's when
he'll be back with a group.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Right and away as well for the last couple of games.
So to get back again to aucklandsidered the home court
and you've had a victory and you're coming back home again.
So there's two big positives, but you can't rest on
those you get flogged again, right.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
Yeah, you can't. This league it just humbles you if
you get too ahead of yourself. You know, you see
it with many teams throughout every season. You know, once
you get on a bit of a roll and then
you relax, you get punished and suddenly you know you're
on the defensive and there's just no room to give
any more.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
You know.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
The ladder is incredibly tight.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
I think where two or three games behind being in
the top four, you know, and despite you know we
had a bit of a losing stream there, we're really
not out of the hunt.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
At all.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
So it's one of those things where you know, you've
just got to stay positive and find wins and just
take it one game at a time. Again, I know
that's pretty cliche, but that's the situation we're in. You
just have to win one at a time and not
look at the ladder too much.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Well, you still got a while to go in the season.
It's not like you're three games out. You've still got
enough time, what a third of a season to go through.
So you can't put yourself in that heat space, can you.
Just it'll crumble you.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, And that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
It seems like, you know, for a lot of us,
it sometimes feels like season has gone on a while,
but it really hasn't.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
You know. Our season is such a quick one.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
You know, we played twenty nine games, and sometimes you
get into a bit of a hole and you've got
to just fight your way out of it. And that's
the situation we're in right now. We had a great
start and then we didn't have a great middle patch.
And if we finish strong, we'll be fine and we'll
make a great push and have some momentum towards finals.
So that's really the goal for us right now.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Game of runs, quarters of run, the seasons of runs.
I mean, that's basketball summed up as and it's great
to see her and gets a lot of court time
as well, both from the bench and of course the
starting five. And with that we'll let you go, Mitch
McCarron four p thirty Sunday, up against the enemy from
the far coast, the distance Derby, so they hopefully will
(08:24):
be shot to bits and you can run over them
like a Sherman tank.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
That would be lovely. Yeah, we're excited for it would
be a great game.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Good on your match. Thanks for your time, mate, Go well.
Our breaks Wildcats tomorrow four point thirty downtown Auckland at
the Arena. They've got a roof.
