Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from News Talk ZEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Let's go to another one of the world's most popular sports.
We're talking football now. National League Championship Football Final is
on tomorrow. It's at North Harbor Stadium, kicks off at
four o'clock. If you want to watch it, get along
to North Harbor where we can watch it on at
FIFA Plus. We're joined now by coach Old Birkenhead finished
top of the table Uklansider they're taking on Finished second.
(00:33):
He joins us and more inn to you, Paul Hobson.
Only a day away now from the final. Are you
nervous much and welcome?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah? We thanks for having us. No, not really, just
doing the big gardening and just kicking back a little bit. No,
not really, not at the moment, but I'm sure as
it gets closer to kickoff and that the old nerves
set in, as they do for every game we play it.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
So how do you work that through with your players?
Is there a method behind the best way of dealing
with street an overall method or player black player situation?
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Paul, Well, it's not as O were in like like
finals all the time. You know, we've had a few
over the last few years. We've just sort of been
pretty relaxed about it. This week I haven't really trained
that much, tried to get them away from football after
being such a long season since we first started training.
(01:35):
I just thought a little bit more rest would be
more beneficial for him. Trained last night and everybody seemed
seemed all right. So yeah, I think we're just happy
to be there and obviously, you know I want to
try and win it, of course, but you know, quite
calm at the moment.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Good to hear Paul Hobson joined us so I hit
a football coach at Birkenhead United before they take on
the ever present Minis over the bridge in the form
of Auckland. What did you pull out last week? Kesh
Mere Technical? Was the opposition couple? Was a brice, wasn't
it for Daniel Bunch? What else did you get out
of it?
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Yeah? Well last I mean, like when you get to
the back end of the season, everybody's winning, so you
you can't slip up. I don't think the last few
weeks probably been at our best, but the one thing
take out of it, we've found ways to win when
normally we find ways to lose. So, yeah, just just
been been hard to break down. And yeah, just maybe
(02:36):
just growing in a little bit of confidence and belief
with a settle team that we can, you know, get
a result, that we're going to get one more chance
in the last ten minutes and take it. But those
the last two games were as tough as any games
we've played all seasons, So great results for us.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Paul, you mentioned a settled lineup. Is there one of
the keys to understanding how you develop and how you
make the most of the ind of that game is
as simple as that? Was there something else within.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
The Yeah, it's it's excuse me, it's so much easier
when you have got a settled line up, But you
can't do it all season because if you do well,
you only need twelve players and everybody else leaves because
they're not getting a game. So really difficult during the season.
But we've had four or five sort of season ending injuries,
(03:25):
so it's made those selections a little bit easier. But
I do think just having that settled team week in
week out and everybody knows a little bit more about
one another, I think it has definitely, definitely helped us.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Yet, who's doing the heavy lifting in your team, Paul,
who's a lot leaning on? Who's got a lot on
their plate as far as what they do. Obviously they
kept and does but any other players that really have
to pull in load.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Yeah, I mean every coach will say it's all about
the team and that, but I think the two players
that the two players up front four as Montyan and
Bunhee of you know, they've scored quite a few goals.
They both near the top of the goal scoring. I
think there's a there's a bit on them to to
to to score obviously, to take chances and to make
(04:16):
it difficult for their opposition. So I mean, you always,
you know, you look to your keepers, you look to
your defenders, but I think in big games like this,
which are just usually decided by moments, you're looking for
your forwards to to win you the game.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
What do you like on the sideline? Do you mouth
off at l be A, Do you have a crack
you guys getting involved in they're close to each other
or not?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
No?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
All right, yeah, no, Now I've got a lot of
respect for him. We've had a few words here and there,
but we always shake and have a laugh afterwards, which
is what it's all, what it's all about really. So no,
there's there's there's nothing, there's nothing there. It's a bit
hard to have a go at down with their record
and it really you can't really say too much.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I'm on the media with Matt Rakers. We're gonna try something.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Right, Paul, Yeah, yeah, exactly, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Say the dick Like North Harbour Stadium game kicks off
at four o'clock. I'm presuming it is almost like estro turf.
It's so smooth and well played.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah, I would imagine obviously not being there for a bit,
but we played a couple of months ago in a
friendly against Oakland NEFC and it was it was in
good condition. And I think if they're using it weekly
for trainings or whatever, I'm sure it's I'm sure it's
I'm sure it's in good condition.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Yeah, awesome. I enjoy yourself. Ahn't tomorrow afternoon four o'clock
North Harbor Stadium if you're keen to watch National League
at Championship Football final. Brook and he'd United it taking
on Auckland City. Of course, he's been talking to the
coach Old Birkenhead United to Paul Hobson, who doesn't want
to give it what forth he'll be at a year
(05:55):
on the touch like come on, may get in there,
gets stuck in. Let the bird out of them. I
owed you something, some kind of just won the game.
That's fine. FIFA plus tomorrow afternoon four walk on the
TV if you want to watch it.
