Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waltergrave from News Talk, SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Cricket Now one Day Competition and the Halliburton Johnston Shield
is on. We're joined by Prue Canton. She plays for
the Auckland Hearts. They've got a double header this weekend
up against the Northern Brave. She joins us now to
discuss that Good morning, Prue, Morning, Darcy. Playing at home

(00:34):
for the first time. You haven't really you haven't really
graced the outer over at eden Park quite some time,
have you.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
No, No, we haven't, but we're excited to be back
at home. We all love playing at eden Park. It's
a great venue and ye should be a good weekend
of cricket.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
So what does it for you about the fact that
you're sleeping in your own bed or is there something
special about that oval?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, it's really nice to sleep in your own bed.
I think we all enjoy, you know, waking up at
home and then traveling to the ground house. But I
think Eden Parker is a special venue. It's a great
ground for women's cricket and it's a lovely place to
watch cricket.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Tell us about your form, right now, because I know
a couple of weeks back with Maddy Green, you absolutely
went on a tear up against a tiger, didn't it.
You probably don't want to talk yourself up, but what
happened there? How big was that?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
You know?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
I thought me and Maddy batted really well, and in general,
big focus on our team as partnerships and betting for
a long time, and how can we either set the
team up as betters or get the job done in
the second innings. So you're obviously really satisfying to beat
the Sparks twice a couple of weeks ago, considering they
won the competition last year. But you know, I'm feeling

(01:50):
good at the moment, and I think our team is
looking really good, which is great for the weekend.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Kind of play that looks back or you know, revision mirrors.
It's all about what's happening now.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, I probably prefer just to focus on the present,
think about what's coming up, and focus probably more on
my game and what I need to do to contribute
to the team's performance. And yeah, how I can best
put my strengths into getting us a win.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
You've got the ability to contribute right across the park though,
haven't you. I think you bowl some offees. You're also
a wicket keeper, I think the next glove person in hand,
and you've been opening at batting now, but you can
also play in the order on that top somewhere, So
there's a You've got a big quiver full of arrows,
haven't you.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
I mean I'm probably bowling a bit less these days,
but I feel like if they asked me to, I
could probably do a job. But no, I think like
my mentality is always what does the team need, putting
the team first, you know, last year or for the season,
Sachi Sharia Opnibatter she retired and she was a great
cricketer for US at Auckland. So the opportunity came to

(02:59):
me to open, which I really enjoyed doing. And then yeah,
I can keep if the team needs me as well. Well,
I'm just ready to do whatever the team needs.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Really, and you're playing with women that you grew up
as played cricket with, so there's a really lovely connection
within the team. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
No, I think that's what's specially about playing for your
home province, and especially for me. I went to Barning
College and you know, in my first eleven we had
Molly Pimfold friend Jonas who are now White Ferns, Josie
Pimfold who plays, and then Eve meetscham who'll be fresh
into the squad this weekend and might get a chance

(03:37):
to debut, which would be exciting.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
What about your own trajectory in your professional career where
does that heat?

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, I mean outside of cricket. I'm studying chemical engineering
at Auckland University. I've got another six months to go,
so I'm excited to be done with that and get
into the workforce and see what that is. And then
also I'm equally focused on trying to become a white
film one day and contributing to Heart's consistently.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Well chemical engineering breaking bed all over again. I didn't
say that that. I didn't say we're not going to
go there. Hey, why do we with Matdi Green? You're
in that big partnership with get on pretty well with Mattie.
She's a great lady. Asked her a few things about
you know what you can do, what you could do?
You know what she said to me? I said, how
much fun was that partnership? She goes, Ah, it was fun.

(04:28):
She was showing me how it's done. That's pretty good
praise from someone like Maddi Green. Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah,
I'll take it.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
I think I love batting with Maddie, Brooke and Lauren
as well in the lineup. They're so experienced and they
I feel like they make my life a lot easier
just their knowledge and the way they can compose innings.
So it's really more of a privilege for me to
be able to battle them for that amount of time.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
How would you sorry, how would you describe your application?
What do you do with a bat? Where are your strengths?
Where are your weaknesses? Tell yourself? Tell us about yourself.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Yeah, so my strengths is the off side. I'm heavily dominant,
and my score and percentages, I feel like I can
access the boundary easily, so probably my weaknesses would probably
be the more league side, but it Yeah, I've been
working on it. Yeah, I feel like this year I've
managed to find the boundary a lot, which helps when

(05:22):
trying to build a partnership, but also get runs on
the board.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Excellent, you get to have a crack and am we're
looking forward to you. I think New Zealand a is
very much on the cards and we hope to see
you get to the very top of that tree. It's
been a real pleasure. Pro Thanks very much for your time.
