You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Be the first cab Off as Richard Barney as we
looked back at last night's fun and games in christ
Church seven minutes after eight. Good morning Tea, Ritchie.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Good morning Nacy.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
How was that?
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Ah? Wow, another gritty game. Eh, that's the old blueprint
and there and the way they isn't it? There was
such a great day, you know with anazac. Weather was great?
Was it cold? But it was just everything aligned and man,
the Warriors just keep dishing out that performance they do.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
I'm on to work out exactly what I made of
that game. It was a when they looked like they
had reasonable control through it. But Newcastle, wow they murdered
some tries, didn't they. They really helped the Warriors gain
their descendancy.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
Yeah, they Yeah, there was a couple of occasions where
that when jammed in and there was opportunities on the edges,
they weren't quite able to get across and convert them.
But the Warrior's desperation from the end aside to push
and try to nullify that was great. But yeah, they
had opportunities that were missing but I think just the
continuous grit and the ethic levels and the game just
(01:26):
just was enough. It was not the best of games
the ox It was quite it was pedestrian, but at best.
I think what swings all the players the same reader
it comes through is that we were just a grinding team.
You know, it's a better now it's embedded, and.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
You look at guys like the Australian impoints like Jackson
Ford for example, and what they do like fiftieth game
and he picks up two meat pies. That was extraordinary.
But him and Mitch Barnett as well, those are a
couple of guys that we're already building around.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah they are, you know. Aaron Clark coming back just
adds that and that the effort levels, it's it's really
it's compelling stuff and there and their stats suggest so too.
You know, they're really punching through the middle. They they
work extremely hard on the one per centers. They're relentless,
they never give up. They're desperate. This says the calory
(02:23):
is great. We've seen that last night. It is very
much a blueprint for what how they're playing. But they're
they're just never giving up on the effort levels and
they're pushing hard. Their kick chase has been outstanding. There's
not many clubs that would when they kick down the
field the kick they call it kick kick chase plus
one and that means they d up on the on
the next one. But but these forwards rushing down making
(02:45):
the first tackle, that is very unusual. And I think
that's the level where the Warriors are at the moment.
They're just working very hard for each other.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
You could see Rocca Berry providing because he was so
good and then got injured and it was this is
the last year. But now after having that that break,
you will, he's come back doing what we want from him.
He's a big body, he's difficult to stop, but he's
also got a smart smartness about him.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, I really do like his style. You know that
the creativity of what he can do, and he's he
can play pre line and postline, so he's got variations players,
which is really needed. The Warriors are trying to find
that variation too. You know, they're a gritty team, but
they haven't got the variety of board players that they need,
(03:35):
and I think that's I think they signed again and
I think from Leeds if I'm right, if they signed
him as a twenty one year old from Leeds and
he's he's a ball playing back, brower, young, young en
upcoming player. And I think Richard Aegar coaching that Leeds
assistant coach with the Warriors, So they're starting to fill
the void. But at the moment, the recipe of success
right now is just a gritty physicality way they're playing.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
As long as it's not Sam Tompkins all over again.
He's a burgess boy more than anything. He had the
harms bearing and it's great admirable what Andrew Webs has
done here. He start with them and he's let them,
letting them build this combination. It would appear to me though,
(04:19):
that out of the two of them, there's one who's
really starting to set in with what they can do
and almost dominating there. Is that a fair thing to say.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
I think the domination of is starting to pear now.
I think the confidence of Metcalf kicking that goal and
building confidence that he's taking it from the scuff of
the neck. And one of those players had to do this,
and I think Metcalf was the right one, and he's
just building in confidence now he took the line on
on a number of occasions, he dictated terms, he kicked
(04:53):
and nearly got a try through a kick. So all
that's coming into fruition now for Metcalfe and he's growing.
It was incredible to watch. Actually last night we were
you know, Shawn Johnson there last night and we were
just going, wow, he has taken it to another level.
So now he's got you know, he's still got work
to do on that's funt. But I think the continuity
(05:13):
which leaned into which is great, you're keeping the same
spine Charms was incredible last night. Now, you know, when
you look at when you look at what we saw
last night against the two fullbacks, Charms doubled, doubled out
of Newcastle, doubled it. There was twenty eight carriers for
for nearly two hundred three hundred meters. Now, those sort
(05:34):
of effort levels are ridiculous. I don't know how he
does it and his recovery for the next game, but
he's pumping out some serious amount of work.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
And of course waite Egan, who's quite something else. Well,
I mean, we could go on all day, but we
won't because we haven't got all day. But I tell
you what, I've got a new phrase. Thanks for that
pre line and postline. I'm loving you reach your barnet.
Thanks very much for that mate. You travel safe. We'll
catch up again soon.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Bro Cheers.
