Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Derby Day Here in New Zealand, the A League Auckland
FC one from Phoenix, both unbeat and both in the
top four, should be a snorter Auckland. They've got the
bragging rights. They won all three of those derby encounters
last year, so the Phoenix pretty much looking forward to
the sporting the party as they play at home. They've
(00:32):
got two of the three derbies this year. Last year
Auckland had two of the three. This time. We're wanting
to get to town. Sam Cosgrove, he's a striker for AUCKLANDFC.
He's with us now to have a look at the
season so far and obviously your head to the clash tonight.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Hey Sam, hello mate, thank you for having me on.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
And thanks for joining us since it's been a while.
But you've actually been playing some football since we last spoke.
So how does that sit with you now you've got
a direct comparison. What has being an AUCKLANDFC striker said
to you about four pool onless place?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Yeah? I believe it or not, I've got I've actually
got a job to do. Over here, so players for
football would be a good start, but no, it's it's
been good, really good since the last talk to you,
obviously a couple of a couple of preseason games under
our belt and then the first the first three games
of the A League season, and it's been it's been
a good start, not a great start, but we're The
(01:30):
consensus around the camp is that we're happy with where
we are. It's been been a solid start, plenty to
plenty to build on. From a personal side and a
team point of view.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
You haven't had a great start. You're at the top
of the table. You do know that, don't you.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, but we're pushing for perfection, mate. We want we
wanted nine out of nine points with three clean sheets.
But no, you're right for the top of the table.
We're not. We're not going to turn our noses at
that by by any means.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
I think you're talking like you coach Carget He's like, no, no, no, no, no.
What happened last year was just simply not acceptable. We
did anything except at the end. So we need to
be bitter and bitter. I'll use an old Blues football
side Blues rugby saying bitter even stops, does it. You've
got to keep pushing yourself.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
No, of course, But on a more serious note, that
is that is the feeling around the club. That is
what we want from from top to bottom. You know,
what we did last year was was unbelievable and the
boys that were here again want to go one step
better and for new boys like myself, we've we've got
(02:33):
the motivation to be the best and we want to
win every single bit. So it'll be top of the
league and winning the winning the Grand Final will be
will be our main name.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
So we you've lifted what you've provided where you need
to go it's only only early doors you'd be a
harsh task master yourself and your coach. Where do you
need to lift, seem.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
I think it's it's it's all around the pitch, you know,
early doors we've shown a lot of promise. I think
that our defensive structure is very sound and that's that's
going to be key for us this year, being that
team that's hard to be and knowing that we've kind
of got that firepower up front to nick us one
or two goals that can hopefully win the game. But
(03:18):
I think for sure it's it's definitely a working progress,
but kind of up at that top end of the pitch,
we've created decent chances for myself and the forwards around me,
So it's just kind of probably converting those decent chances
into goals and will be well on our way. But
as I said, it's been, it's been a positive start.
So it's it's baby steps at this point and growing
(03:39):
into the season, but yeah, positive starts so far.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
Confidence in the mean around you and there's something that developed.
How long does it take for a new recruit where
you're playing to suddenly get in the rhythm of what
everybody else is up to? Is there a sick time?
Do you notice it's three four, five matches that How
does this actually operate? Because you'll be keen to everyone
running on the same page, how close to you?
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Yeah, of course I mean that that perfection is is
the end goal, but the odds are we're never gonna
We're never gonna get that completely. But it's just about
building on each game for us at the moment, I
mean for myself personally, kind of the three forward in
the team recently myself Jesse Gajemo Unlockey fifty of that
new players, so we're all learning about each other and
(04:26):
it's going to be a working progress. But from what
I've been involved and what I've seen it all, it's
all definitely positive. And through each of the games this
season we've been better and better and more potent in
front of goals. So as long as we continue on
that up for trajectory, then I'm sure we'll get to
a decent place.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I don't know if Derby's over here or anything like
they are over in Britain, but it's fiercely contasted and
the Phoenix have going off to a good start as well.
This is going to be a snorter and it's a
name Beck. Yeah, what are your expectations?
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Expectations that we go there and win the game for
first and foremost? You know we're I mean, but that
not being not being naive or arrogant. That is the
mindset that we have. We go into any game, not
just a Derby, looking to gain three points and be
the winning team. But yeah, as you said, it's going
(05:18):
to be there's that added spice is it being a Derby.
You know, there's a word of war going on behind
the scenes and social media a little bit, but that
just adds to all the fun and we love it
as football. These are the games that we want to
be involved in. You know, Derby is an extra special
for us, special for the fans and extra special.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
For the club.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
So if we can continue the bragging rights from last
season then it'll be it'll be a good day out
for us.
