The Breakers are having a bit of a mid-season resurgence.

After a rocky start to the season, they’ve now won three games in a row, and will want to keep their streak rolling when they take on the South East Melbourne Phoenix tonight.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
They are actually starting to win games and looking like
a viable threat and the a NB that's the Australian
National Basketball League it is. It is a resurgent. It
has been. It's been a rocky start, that's the nicest
way to put it. But now three on the bounce,
No excuse for the pun there, it is basketball after all.

(00:33):
They need to keep rolling. They take on the Southeast
Melbourne Phoenix later tonight. We're joined now by a shooting
GARB with the name is Sean Bearstow. He joins us
to discuss that game. Good morning, Sean, how are you?

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah, no, not so bad. You'll be looking forward to
carrying on your I suppose you're advancing within the team
because you've had a few injury issues and you've climbed
on into cover for what Darling is out. The art
is not there anymore, so you're really starting to get
some good minutes.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Yeah. No, it's definitely good to be able to build
on some games and find a find a groove that
you can get comfortable in and abously have success and.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Super difficult to what you're part of the team that
to suddenly roll in and start getting minutes. How did
that transition work for you?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah, I mean it happens pretty quickly. You know, it
will take someone going down. This is obviously unfortunately I've
been on the other side of that. So yeah, it's
just an opportunity that you've got to kind of just
prepare for and do the best when you get a chance.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Must be stoked to be back. And the team's going
through a resurgence because look, let's not beat around the
bush yet. A rotten start to the season, didn't you,
But it's starting to settle. Why do you think that is?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I think we're just getting more comfortable playing with each other.
There's a kind of togetherness on the defensive end that
I think we're really starting to make stides, and so
I think, you know, we can be a defensive team
down the US end of the season stretch will be
in good good chance.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
They missed having that hammered into it. It's all very
well to score points, but if you've got no d
it's no point, is he Is that a part of
the game that you enjoy? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, definitely, especially as a as a role player, you
know you're not going to get to fifteen twenty shots,
so you kind of fund enjoy doing doing everything else.
So yeah, defense is something that definitely have fun doing.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
When you look across the entire starting group, I know
who's leading from the front, but but for you, who
are the leaders on court? Guys that you look toward
to help you move forward?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, I mean I think it's pretty pretty obvious in PGC,
you know, as a point guard and our leader. So
I think it starts with him and then trickles down
through the starters.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
See a vocal kind of point guard. Does he get
quite verbal with you? Or did he lead by his actions?
Where does he bring the best? Do you think he does?

Speaker 3 (03:06):
He does? He definitely is by example just the way
he you know, creates for the guys and plays with energy.
So yeah, he definitely is for example on the court,
and you know he's a he's a pretty good vocal
leader too.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Now you're kind of fresh in your pro career, but
you've spent a lot of time in Utah over in
the States, like sharpening your tool, if you will. How
was that for you what four years?

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (03:31):
No, it was it was good it was a you know,
major growth experience. You know, to live on the other
side of the world in a place with Utah gone
from Brisbane, so it's pretty pole opposite to be honest.
So it was a big, big adjustment, but I think
a massive learning curve, both on the court and off
the court.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
So why the breakers, Well, you're from a family of
seven thousand, I think it is you've got you've got
brothers that have played at a top level. But but
why the shaky aisles? Why New Zealand?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
This is just how it played out after after school.
You know, agents do their job and whatnot, and so.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Do you feel like you're all part of it? You
feel comfortable here, titor. Now you've been in Auckland for
a while.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, yeah, I mean the boys are super super good.
We've got a really close knit group and you know,
New Zealand is a super nice people. Everyone's been super
friendly and accepting.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Tell us about your strengths. What do you hang your
head on as far as what you can actually bring
to the court.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
I think just being able to do a bit of everything.
Been able to handle past rebound, shooting, defence, so been
able to do a bit of everything. And just be
solid around.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Have you stopped growing or you're still on the way up?
Because what are you're standing at? About? What's six eight
in the old money? So you're not really shy and retiring,
are't you?

Speaker 3 (04:48):
No, I've definitely definitely still gone on years ago.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
What about your physical presence is on your body? I'm
looking back to a guy who's going to get his
jersey raised and how Tom Abercrombie and as he got older,
he got more and more physical, more and more muscular.
Is that something you want to.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Do or yeah, yeah, I think that's you know, that's
that's kind of the trajectory, is to put some size
on my frame. It's been a kind of slow process,
and I've always been a super skinny kid, but you know,
I think I think that's something that kind of becomes
easier as you get older.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
So hopefully hopefully you can keep doing. Just keep eating, bro,
You'll be fine. And finally you're shooting guard. Can you
play anywhere else? At sex eight? Maybe a little too
skinny to you, you know, mix it with the big boys,
but you play any other spots?

Speaker 3 (05:39):
Yeah, I think I'm probably play one through one through four,
depending on the floor. And how much of a bully
is but yeah, well I'm pretty pretty versatile in that aspect.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Bully the bully and enjoy yourself on are high the
Breakers and you guys next to night Cup game, you're
looking down the barrel of quite a bit of money.
Don't think about that. That'll take your eyes off the price.
But Shawn, you go well, go hard up against the
South East Melbourne. Looking forward to watching your cheers broke.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
