Auckland FC are building a reputation for leaving it late in football's A-League – a trend that has seen them shoot to the top of the men's standings.

Over a third of their goals have been scored after the 80-minute mark, including the injury-time winner in their most recent clash against Western Sydney.

Director of Football Terry McFlynn joined D’Arcy Waldegrave to preview their clash against Macarthur today at Mt Smart from 5pm.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk sed B seven eighteen.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
In the first day of fair Bit of Football. We
now go the Auckland f C Sider hosting MacArthur This
Afternoon Slash this evening at five o'clock talking about that
game and the season that's so far. We're joined by
the Director of Football Terry mcflynn.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Good morning, Terry, Good morning, Darcy. How are you.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I'm good, Probably calmer than you are I expect. As
the director of football for AUCKLANDFC. You're trying to impress
upon your players how important is not to win in
the last minute. It's killing you fan base.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Terry. Oh look, I think it keeps the fans wait
at chat right up to the very last minute. So
of personally I would like them to score a little
bit earlier on but three points three points, so which
is happy to take the win anywhere it comes.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
It's kind of becoming habitual, though, isn't it this pulling
it out of the bag at the last minute that
it surely isn't by design?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Oh look, I think it's a's all credit to the
coaching staff. You know, they set up processes and structures
and the players believe it and they keep going. And
you know, the fitness levels of the players have called
it the minute it means you ge getting wrong eye
games for you know, ninety five ninety six, one hundred minutes,
and which is very pleasing. And as we know on
this figure, you've got to be fit, healthy and strong,
and we've got a group of boys that are exactly that.

(01:29):
So Longman continued, well, it is a positive.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
And now watching last time, thinking if anyone's going to
pull out these guys, they're not going to lose any fitness,
They're not going to run out of steam. So you
don't want to rely on that. But having in your
back pocket is huge for the side.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
It is looking at. It's such an important aspect of
the modern day game to be robust, fit, healthy and strong. So,
like I said, the coaching staff, medical teams a fantastic
job getting the players to where they are at the
halfway point of the season and and say we're looking
forward to this of the.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Season, halfway point at the top of the league. This
is a great story so far. I expect that you've
got confidence. There's no reason why this should sag. But
it does happen in professional football, right, You go through
runs but it doesn't work. What are you doing mentally
to try and avoid that situation?

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, look, we know, as we spoke about before, we
have internal processes that we we set in place very
early in the preseason. The goals were set by the
team individually plus collectively. We work hard towards achieving them
on a monthly basis. We've got a multi mos strategy
and how we keep the players mentally stimulated, mentally engaged

(02:44):
and take each game as it comes. Will I'll be
at home or away. And they said the coaching team,
the medical team are wor guitarist to keep the players
one mentally stimulated to physically prepared and three haven't fun
at the same time.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Is that even Stevens or does one have more important
than the other?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Tiery? No, Look, you I don't think you can put
it above the other. You know, I think for us,
we've got a process that we work through and continue
to do that, whether it be technically, technically, physically or mentally,
and we just make sure that the boys are all
in in a good space. When when the coaches are
decide what the starting lineup is going to be on

(03:24):
the weekend and the players have come off the bench
of Don fantastically well forced as well, So what we
know it's a squad game. Every single player in the
dress room is important. Young ones sway through to the
oldest ones we caught. Everyone's going to be needed to
get us to where we want to get to in
the first of June.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Any tweaks that you believe has been been made since
your last up match, now you've got MacArthur because they've
been really up and down, haven't they, Terry when some lose,
some school goes don't score any it's a fourth on
the table, unpredictable or not.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Yeah, look we've alsously played them early in the season.
We played Right five over and Sydney which was the
United Ryne. You know, the analystic analyzed them all their games.
Coature have looked at them areas where we believe we
can get joined success during the game. But look it's
mainly about us Garsonse. We are focused after the westn

(04:17):
Sydney Wonders game was to recover well, get the players
back to Offen as soon as we could. They had
a day off, refreshed mentally physically and then they're ready
to go. And yeah, like I said, our posts are place,
structures of place, and then we're ready for the game.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Quiver wise, if you are, you fully loaded, you got
everyone on board.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Yeah. Look, obviously Dan Hall still ope, he won't be
back for the game, but yeah, everyone else is fretting,
healthy and available for selection.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
And that's what you want. As far as you're recent
seeing your diet, you know that is absolutely working. It's
hard to fault what you're doing right now. But I
suppose in your position, Terry mcflin, you kind of have
to fault things, don't you. You've got to look to
where they might be a crack or a sag or
something like that, so it doesn't come back to bite you.
Did you spend much time looking in the space or not.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Oh, look, I wouldn't say I look for a fault.
We're always looking to improve, That's that's definite. You know.
For us, it's always put succession planning. It's always about
being better. It's always about getting better. So, as you said,
everything at the minute is going very well. And that's
right across the old club in the football department. From
a logistical point of review, operational point of view, performance

(05:29):
point of view. You know, the process we put in
place are working. But yeah, look we're always looking to improve.
We're always looking for up skilling and individuals where they'll
be players and staff. So yeah, we'll continue to we'll
continue to do that.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Five o'clock the afternoon versus MacArthur. One place for Happy,
Home for Auckland. See the fans all right, the port
will be on fire and hopefully you can get yourself
a bag of goals. But not in the ninetieth minute,
Terry mcflinn, as always, thanks very much for your time.
Now you go well, Savo.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Thank you very much.
