Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB All Sports Breakfast All Star Panel.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
And we go out to the All Star Panel. We
are joined by Ada McLaughlin. Good morning to you, Aiden,
well is you Darcy, and also Bonnie Jameson get a
Bonnie Most Promising Young Journalist of the Year Voyager Awards.
Great gone, congratulations on that. You fully deserve it. Are
(00:39):
you still reveling? Are yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Thanks dars No, It's been an awesome week and yeah,
really really grateful it. It's good to be around people like.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yourself and you've capped it off by coming on this
fine program. You're a lucky person. Will start with you. Bonnie.
Should Ardie Savia get a looking as the All Black Captain.
This is the narrative at the moment.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
What you say, Oh, I think he absolutely should. I
think he was probably ripped off and raises first season
that he didn't get the nod. And you know the
fact that he is leading Milana so terrifically this season
is just another example of why he would be good
in that role. He's he's the best player right now
(01:22):
and he leads from the front, so yeah, I just
don't see why he can't get a look.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
And it's not going to happen though, is it?
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Aiden?
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Because the All Black team announcement is at the rugby
club where the Barretts first started playing their rugby, so
I doubt they go, Hey, here you go, I'm gonna
throw this grenade into the club rooms. You guess. Come on, Ardie,
it says that Volumes speaks volumes.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
Isn't that unless unless Scott Robinson is trying to take
part in running it straight some version running it straight.
I don't think he will be announced as Ardi will
be announced on that occasion.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
To ask, you're absolutely right.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
But to Bonnie's point, he if Scott is unavailable throughout
the season for whatever reason, then Ardi would be more
than adequate replacement. You know, he's been absolutely inspirational this season.
From Muana Pacifica. I mean that game, I mean, it's
been talked about a lot in the in the last week.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
His performance last week. I mean someone I was.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
In a chat with on saying that compared it to
that great Dan Carter performance against the Lions in two
thousand and five, one that will stay in the memory
for many, many years.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
So can you do it? Of course he can? Will
he do it? I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
It was so much fun that test, taunting the British
and Irish fans who are behind us. I'm going to
stop with that. Let's move on to a next subject,
one that's close to my heart, Bonnie and I am
unbelievably happy around this. Christ Jurch hosts a second Supercars
(02:51):
race in twenty twenty six. Apoona have the nod. This
is great not only for christ Jet in the South Island,
but Venew Zealand. We've got two races now. A League
take notice exactly.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I feel like christ Church, you know, is calling for
more sport right now. We know that they want an
A League team, they want an NRL team, and this
is just another step showing that. You know that the
city is around big events and things like that. But
I'm soaked, you know. I took a hot lap with
brock Seening recently and yeah, just love love that sporting
(03:30):
and love to see the kiwis right now and that
absolutely smashing it. So I think it will go well
down there.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, Aiden, can you drop a name like that just
casually or not?
Speaker 4 (03:39):
I can't even drop a hot lap never mind drop
a name.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
So no, but if I could be put on the
waiting list, that would be awesome. But no, it's fantastic news.
You know, the return to New Zealand over the last
couple of years in Taupo has has been so popular.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
I know the first year it was really rain affected.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
I remember kind of sitting watching it at home and
it was such a shame. But I spoke to a colleague,
yesa who is a massive, massive supercarse fanily lives on
the North Shore. He came down to Taupa in the
first year. I think he's already trying to think about
how he's going to get down for a second weekend
in christ Church when that opportunity arrives.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
So really positive steps.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Clearly the Supercars organization are very pleased with what they've
seen over the last couple of years in Tapo, and
there's great news that they want to expand further.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Really good news for everyone concerned.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
I'd say, laid down messir, But it's got to be
close because there are direct flights from Australia straight to
christ Church, so you can almost get one of those
little electric scooters aline and from the airport coach straight
there as that close and of course christ Church has
accommodation and plenty of it, so great news for motorsport fans.
(04:51):
Really looking forward to just an alert fell and christ
Church listeners out there, people that know me. I'll be
looking for a couch to sleep on next year. One down,
I'm all over that all start Powel, Bonny Jansen, Ada
McLachlin joined us. It is twenty minutes to nine more
up next Auckland f C. We got to talk about that,
(05:12):
we do, don't we?
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Right? We do?
Speaker 6 (05:14):
Yeah, storm a forty two on the All Sport Breakfast
All Star panel that Bonnie Janssen is with us and
I might have to and also of course Aiden McLaughlin.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Bonnie, you've got to just like keep a little on
it because you can probably sport for the next hour
on this, but you're not allowed to. Can Auckland FC
get it done?
Speaker 4 (05:40):
It?
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Mount Smart, I'm so excited, Firs Piney, it's a sorry Darcy,
it's a beautiful.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
My lord, he get her off your How could she?
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Sorry?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Buddy, I'm so used to talking with all before. Where's
the rest?
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Can they get a dance?
Speaker 3 (06:02):
As I'm saying yes, it's an absolutely stunning day here
in Thomas McCoo and I just feel like it's theirs
to lose a ticket to the Grand Finals there to lose. Yeah,
I'm expecting two three goals from from Auckland the f
C tonight and yeah, I mean one there was a
scary lead, right and that's what concerns me a little bit.
(06:23):
Melbourne can come here with the pressure after but I
just don't see them beating Auckland the f C with
you know, at the fortress I've built out at go
Media Stadium.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Thank you, Laura McGoldrick, Aiden mccarth, move on with us.
How do you feel around us? Because they played on
a swamp last weekend, which is no fun for anyone.
They've got a bit lippy the Melbourne victory, but they're
coming to a hard and fast ground. They know what
they have to do. Explosive anybody.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
And you know, if we look back a year, I
don't want to really remind you, but it's not that
long ago that we have to look back for Melbourne
coming to New Zealand and spoiling the party in the
semi final. You know, when they when they upset the
Phoenix and that was that was a very tense occasional
at Sky Stadium, but they came out victorious, so they
know how to get the job done. And I think
(07:11):
from Auckland's perspective, what they really need is a relatively
early goal. If they can settle their nerves in the
first fifteen to twenty minutes, take a lead, Hopefully they
can just settle into things and then Melbourne will be
chasing and hopefully things work out okay. But it's going
to get very very nervous if melbourn can get that
equalizer on aggregate quite early in the piece.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I'm still back in Auckland all the way.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
I think they'll get across the line, but I think
there could be a few twists across the ninety minutes.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
You're ringing Alex Paulson slept tonight considering what happened last year.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
No good point.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
Actually look funnily enough, I heard Jonathan Gould speak his
goalkeeping coach there and Auckland, and you know, Jonathan Golder
a player with a great experience over in Scotland and
England and on the European stage. He's played some big
games and I think he's really impressed with the way Paulson,
who was an outstanding goalkeeper last year. As we know,
I think he's really impressed with the way he's developed
(08:04):
his not only his gay this year, but also his
kind of mental strength.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
So no, I'm feeling pretty.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Good famous last words, et cetera, but feeling pretty good
about the goalkeeping situation.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
You hit him on my program, didn't you.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Aiden actually heard him in Hawk's Bay.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Okay, well I had him on a couple of days ago.
You could have just lied to me. Made me feel good.
You're going to move you to one? So ibing to
get back to Bonnie Jansen run it straight. The event
canceled organizers, site backlash from other events, or maybe the
fact that's a little on the killy side. What do
you make of this one, Bonnie?
Speaker 3 (08:40):
Yeah, I'm not not for it at all, whatsoever. Yeah,
I think it's it's an absolute joke. I mean, you know,
we've got to let people do what they want to do.
But my immediate fear was this with this was you know,
being picked up on social media and the kids, you know,
taking it on board and playing it and doing it
(09:00):
at schools. You know, Yes, we see it in rugby
or and that's the highlight of that game when when
players go head to head like that. But they're professional athletes,
and I just don't think there's enough kind of coaching
or science around this to be any good at all.
(09:21):
I get money's on the line, but yeah, I just
don't think it's a good look.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
If you couple this up aiding with Power Slap and
with Dan Hooker's new street fighting event, you put her
onto the same umbrella. It's the Darwin Awards series, because
that's what we're looking at.
Speaker 4 (09:37):
Me.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
You can lead a horse to water and invariably it drowns.
You just can't tell people how to behave you know.
I don't like restraints put down on folk. You know
the rules, you know the risks. If twenty grand is
worth it for you, go for it. I always knock
yourself out. But it's just far too literal. So is
twenty grand enough aiden.
Speaker 5 (09:59):
Well, I think for some people that obviously is darcy
because if they're willing to take part, as you say,
each to their own, I mean, it brings absolutely no
interest to the table. For me, I can't even bring
myself to watch these clips are on social.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
Media, just kind of get an understanding of the event.
I just don't want anything to do with it.
Speaker 5 (10:17):
Really, So to your point, people have free will, you know,
and I do respect that, but equally, it's not the
sort of thing I would really want my kids to
be aware of or watch, never mind go and see.
So yeah, for me, I just want to keep it
a wide berth from it. If that's your thing, and
that's what you want to do for the twenty grand,
(10:37):
if you want to take those risks, good luck to.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
You, daddy.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Daddy, I've got a new sport to play. So worst night,
mere stuff. I know you're talking. Hey, Bonny, what about
the other big game that's happening this weekend? It says
the Chiefs and Moana Pussyfica, the massive hype around the
team after what happened last week an Artie Savia and
(11:03):
they got an Iceberg's chance in hell of rolling the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Yeah. I was just looking at this this morning, and
the odds, you know, that's very much and it's very
much in the chief favor and so it should be.
I hope Milana can get up and they did that
fantastically against the Blues. But you know, the Blues have
not had a good a season as the Chiefs have had,
(11:29):
so that'll be a really, really tough challenge for them.
And I just feel like maybe the mindset, you know
that the mindset of those Milana players last week was incredible,
and whether they can do that again and maintain that
focus against a team like the Chiefs, I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Yeah, consistency issue, do worry about that. But they play
such an uplifting, invigorating, persuasive game, don't they aid, And
a lot of people outside of the Chiefs district want
to see them roll them and play this expansive, mad,
mad game of rugby. I think it brings a lot
of joy to people. I'd say mowan are probably the
(12:08):
second favorite team of most super fans beside their own.
Speaker 4 (12:12):
Yeah, I think so.
Speaker 5 (12:12):
And I think when Mowana came into the competition alongside
the Drewer, this is what most fans were hoping for
from a style perspective. I think everyone knew it would
be tough for them in the first couple of seasons
to get those results, But as long as they were
playing that attractive type of rugby which we associate with
those countries, then supporters were going to be happy and
(12:34):
they were going to back them. But now as we're
starting to see the results come through, it's just adding
that extra dimension, isn't it, so that they know they
do go there with belief and people watching. As you say,
if they're their second team, they actually have faith that
they can go to the Chiefs, then they can actually
perform and potentially get a result. I personally think that
the Chiefs are just going to be a little bit
(12:55):
too strong for them on this occasion. But hey, it's
been great to see the growth of them this season
and to see them get some big, big results, and
you know, there's no reason why they can't still upset
a few people this season with the Hawks.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Bay Times Freelancer sports journo Adam McLaughlin, thank you very
much for that, Bonnie Jansen Award winning journalist who still
thinks I'm piney. That's fine. He's a very talented man,
good looking too. I'll take that anytime. And hey, well
one thing for you aiden before we go, do not
forget that everybody thought the Crusaders were going to run
(13:28):
Rushot over the Highlanders last night too, right right? They did,
and it's not get too confident. Chiefs fan, A, guys
and girls, K Fine, Bonnie and thanks for your time.
That's the All Star panel on News Talk z B.
It's nine minutes tonight.
