Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB All Sport Breakfast, All Star Panel.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Of course I can't do that, Clay, I'll get sacked.
Jeff mctage, Welcome to the broadcast.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Good morning mate, how are we You sound like you've
had about four coffees this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
No, this is what I normally like. There's no change.
It's my lovely adhd as I call it.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Hey.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Thanks very much for join us, of course, Clay, thanks
very much for sticking in the studio. Subjects of the week,
first one, I'll leave it up with you, Clay, to
start with Richie Munga returns. How much pressure on him?
How much pressure on Barrett? How much pressure on d Mac,
how much press on Scott Robinson that he's got his man? Yeah,
well I suppose pressure, but I think that's a good thing.
You know, this is competition at the end of the day,
(00:55):
more competition for that first five spot. And surely players
of the experience in class of Boden Barrett and Damian
McKenzie and a player of the talent ambition of a
Reuben Love that can only be good for them in
terms of what they want, which is, of course they
want to be in the All Blacks of it, playing
ten fifteen, wherever it is. So I think this is
(01:17):
a good thing. I don't think Richie Muwang. I mean,
there's been a lot of talk about it, but he
doesn't strike me now in this part of his career
as someone who's going to feel the pressure to live
up to that expectation and that hype of coming back.
So I don't think there's too much to worry about that.
I think this is a good thing all round. And
the reality is, while he might be you know, some
people might say he's taking a spot of someone else's
(01:39):
who's up and coming, we want the best players playing
for the All Blacks. If Ritchiemu Wonga comes back and
shows that he is still that, let's put him in
the team chef. It's going to be a hell of
a superseason, isn't all these guys fighting for the position
for the World Cup, right. I don't think there's any
favoritisms going into this. I think everyone's got to crack
and from what I know of Boden Barrett, he'll absolutely
treasure this opportunity to be number one.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, I couldn't agree more with claimate. I think it's
a great move, probably the worst kept secret, and he's
Zealand rugby that Rays wanted to get him back as
soon as he took over as if he coached the
All Blacks, so they finally finally got it done. I
know that they wanted a longer contract out of Richie.
I think if that had happened, as you know, Darcy,
perhaps there would have been a bit of room for
negotiation as to when he when he set it up
(02:24):
for the All Blacks again. But obviously that's going to
be at the latest after not the NBC next NBC
heading into the two seven Super Rugby season, so there's
still a lot of rugby to be played before now
and then, and I think that that considered, you know,
Boden and Damien and Reuben, they're going to have an
opportunity for the All Blacks to to put their best
foot forward and show Raiser you know that they belong there.
(02:47):
But equally, you know, Todd Blackadder has said that since
since Richie's been up in Japan, he's probably playing the
best rugby that he's played in his life, and that
since he left after the two three World Cups, so
they're getting a quality player back. He's won a couple
of titles with Tashiba, He's taken another step forward in
terms of his game management. I know been enjoying his
time in Japan. So they all Blacks are getting back
(03:09):
and New Zealand Rugby is getting back a quality player. And
as Clay said, I think it can only be a
good thing Venew Zealand Rugby giving your team options ahead
of a Rugby World Cup in twenty twenty seven. But
I think we're going to see the best of Richie
when he does return for the Crusaders in Canterbury. And
that's exciting.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Nice to know, Jeff that you listen to sports Talk
so you hear me talking to Tom Blackadder. Yeah, yeah,
you're going to come back on the show again. I'll
tell you. Let's move to the wonderful wide world of
rugby league. This is what we want in the run
to the finals, Clay. We want it to be tight
and now we're starting to see the usual suspects rise
so much on tonight's game. I mean it's not make
(03:46):
or break for the Warriors, but top four is the
best position to get a title, right, now outside of that, it's.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Not I think the thing is now, after the start
and middle part of the season the Warriors have had,
it would be disappointing now to fall out of that
top four and not get a home playoff at some point,
so that's really what they're fighting for. Of course, so
many injuries to the squad, but good news overnight with
James Fisher Harris convomed to come back early from his
carp injury for tonight's game.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
So that's that I believe you want to see it.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Sorry, but but yeah, look, I mean obviously the Panthers
last night had another win nine in a row. Now
for them, they haven't lost, They haven't lost since the
end of May. So yeah, you look at those those
kind of teams coming in the Raiders when it won
again last night, Melbourne doing what Melbourne does. So there's
going to be a lot of competition for that top
(04:36):
four and a big game for the Warriors tonight because
Penrith have now gone provisionally fourth and they are going
to be tip for tap. The good news for the
Warriors is that the Panthers do have a much tougher
run home.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Now.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Nothing in the NRL is guaranteed, but the Storm next week,
then the Raiders, then the Bulldogs before the Dragons to finish.
So three of the competition's top well the top three
teams currently in the competition. The Panthers have to play
in the next four weeks, so you'd hope that's going
to help out the Warriors, but they're going to have
to do to do their own job in terms of
getting a few wins on the board here and over
(05:09):
these last five rounds.
Speaker 2 (05:11):
My more tired sayings Jeff of recent times is it's
just not how you start, it's how you finish. And
that I think is very true when you look at
what Penrith did. They an awful start to the season,
but that's a distant memory. It's kind of switched with
the Warriors. Whe where's your faith at right now? After
you know, two wins, they've hardly won. They've had buyers
(05:32):
and losses over the last six weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Well, Andrew Webster's had a great look at his ken
as and he's had had a great look at the
depth and the and the roster look. He just needs
to get on the phone to Michael McGuire. Imagine saying, mate,
how does it what does it feel like losing your
starting halves Combo and another one of your key players
in a single play against Melbourne. I mean that that
that right there just shows how quickly your season contented.
(05:56):
I think they'll get Adam Reynolds back for the finals run,
but that just shows that the Broncos, a team that
were right there knocking on the door of the top four,
have now lost the keys to the engine, you know,
for one of a better phrase. So look, I think
if the Warriors can get a win tonight, I think
tonight is crucial, you know, for the likes of for
a Tanno board and a Harris Deavita. I think we
(06:18):
need players tonight. Sure, they're not going to get the
flow of ball that they enjoyed at the start of
the season, especially with a guy like Wade Eggan out
and Luke Metcalf, but I think Charles nickel Plock's that
in the censers and then you know, dealing out on
the wing with Roger. I think if those guys get
an opportunity to step bark gets the ball on hand,
we might see some of the best because they know
(06:39):
they need them, that they know that the Warriors need
them to be at their best and James for sher
Harris does suit up as you say, believe it when
you see it. If he does get out there, he'll
obviously be a key cornerstone too. But I think tonight
is crucial. I think thirty two points. I think from
memory last year got you in the eighth, So one
or two more wins for them, Dogs away, Dragons home.
They've got the Eels at home at Mitchell Moses is
(07:00):
back of course for them, and then they get have
to go to Brookvale to end things off in the
regular season again Deli Cherry Evans who's suiting up for
the last time there, and many colors, so luck by
no means an easy run home. But I think all
cards on the table. There's still some bloody good players
here for Andrew Webster and the Warriors to work with,
and tonight you here, I say they need to put
(07:21):
their best foot forward and get the two.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Indeed they do. Jeff mctaninez join us on the All
Star panel along with the Clay Wilson, who's absolutely intent
on watching the boxing I understand. Up Shortly, the All
Star panel will talk about the black Caps domination of
Zimbabwe and you really think New Zealand they're ever going
to give up the idea of hosting state of origin.
We've got to let this one go. This is News Talk.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
ZB All Sports Breakfast, All Star Panel.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
All Star Panel consists of Clay Wilson and Jeff mctaine
till We'll get things started with you, Jeff. The Black
Caps having the time of their life at the moment,
but it's a little one sided. Can we read anything
add all into this?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Well? I think it's great from again similar to the
Warriors this season or being on it on a different
side of things. With a lead of four hundred and
fifty plus against Zimbabwe, Lucker, I turned on the phone
this morning and probably a little surprised to see a
six six in front of the school, but in some
ways it's you know, it's a Zimbabwe team making their
way back into the international fold against the New Zealand
(08:28):
side who Rob Wolts has got an opportunity to blood
some players, you know, particularly in the in the seam
bowling side of things. Matt Henry has been leading really well.
I think in that space he's playing some good cricket.
But to bring in guys like Zach Folks and Matt Fisher,
Jacob Duffy and really grow that side of the game
for them sort of the start of his tenure I
(08:48):
think is really valuable if you're one the clock back
over the years we've really relied on, you know, probably one,
two or three players, particularly out of the Bolton South
the area. Now bringing in those guys for that experience,
I think Zach Folks and Matt Henry going to offer
New Zealand that swing going forward. You know, Zach is
also well adapt to the conditions in England as well,
(09:08):
where they who they're going to be playing a fair
bit over the next twelve to eighteen months. So I
think for Jacob Orman and Robin and the coaching stuff,
I think, you know, the exercise of playing Zimbabwe and
obviously getting opportunity to place out of Africa who Rob
knows really well, it's been a good opportunity for them
to see what these young guys have got, you know.
(09:29):
If we bring them back to the New Zealand conditions
where it seems everywhere, I think it could be an
interesting summer as well with the West Indies getting to
New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Sorry, Jeff, I'm very rude. Says a lot though Clay
by the fact that the high score from Zimbabwe is
bringon Taylor, who hasn't played for three and a half years.
He is near on forty years old. It's not great.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Yeah, I mean, like Jee said, they're kind of making
their way back into the Test fold. So I guess
you expect the black Caps to win and win comfortably,
perhaps not this comfortably. And you know, I mean do
players like Devin Conway and I mean hasn't had a
Test century in a long time. Henry Nicol was in
the same boat. So so I mean, I guess you've
(10:08):
got to say good for them to just get three
fridges on the board.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Change it's off. It's just a coffee machine going right,
cards out.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Apologies, but look, I mean some confidence to be gained.
But I'm sure they're well aware of the kind of
the quality opposition they're up against versus what they are
usually going to face and what they what they will
face in the months and years to come. So so
I mean you take something from it, but you know,
a grain of salt as well.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
With Wis and Barbe and a mine of salt you're making.
Hay sun is shining very fast. We've run at a time.
Are you going to ever give up on his head
on hosting The State of Orange and Jeff mctaints yes
or no.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
I think commercially it makes sense, but I think from
a tribal perspective, one moove it out of Australia. I
don't think. I don't think it's going to catch up.
And I think it'd be more novelty and exhibition than
anything else. And I think I think from from an
origin perspective it'd be it backwards step.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Thank you very much. I agree you. Clay Wilson.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Yeah, it's hard to see it happening in our lifetime.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
But I'd go and a heartbeat, but it's got no place. Hey,
we're going to go Jeff mctage's coffee machine and Clay Wilson,
thanks for joining the show mate. It's been a real pleasure. Jeff,
go well, and you, Clay Wilson, go back into the
office and do more work, which involves watching boxings. As
News talks e B it is eight minutes to nine.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
I don't even want to deal with this anymore.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
